MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Rich’s Car Wash Player of the Week is Katelyn Foster, a senior golfer out of Baker High School.

She shot her personal best and school record four under par 67 when her team competed against Orange Beach at Gulf Shores Country Club. Katelyn had five birdies on the day, one Bogey and 12 pars to help lead her team to a three stroke victory over the Makos.

“I really like that course, Foster says, “I’ve played it before, so I knew like where to miss and everything and my game was just good that day. I was striking the ball well, and I managed to make a bunch of puts so that helped me shoot my most personal best that day.”

Hornets head golf coach Sam Gates tells me that Foster is always locked in, not matter what.

“Once she got past that one little bogey on number two, it was just game on from there. The birdies were rolling and rolling. The thing I love about her is no matter if she’s 4 over par or 4 under par, you don’t know the difference. She’s still keeping the pace and keeping the game mode up. She doesn’t let herself get too into every single shot. She goes into the next hole and prepares herself to get that hole out of the way, good or bad, and then moves on to the next one.”

Katelyn joined the Baker golf team in 7th grade. Gates knew they were getting a talented athlete, but Foster is just as talented in the classroom. She has also played a key role in growing the program into what it is today.

“She’s got a 34-35 on the ACT. She’s top 10 in her class out of over 200 to 300 kids. She always has straight A’s, never less than 97 in any class. I call her a trailblazer because what she’s done is opened up this program to the middle school and instead of being just a Baker High School thing, it’s a very community wide thing now with the middle school. Kids are always asking, When are tryouts? When can we do this? When can we do that? And that’s a lot to do with her.”

I asked Foster what it meant to her to be recognized this week and she says she’s proud of what it shows.

“It’s just really rewarding. I feel like I work pretty hard. So, to get an award like this and shoot good scores. It just means that all my hard work is paying off.”

Foster will be the first golfer in Baker history to play for a D1 program after committing to South Alabama last August. We look forward to seeing her continued success at the next level and beyond.
