MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Students descended on the Mobile Convention Center Saturday to participate in another STEM Fest.

The free event hosted by STEM Mobile and co-sponsored by the Mobile Parks and Recreation Department gave students in kindergarten through 12th grades the opportunity to design, build, and engage with 60 different stem activities, including making elephant toothpaste and slime, watching a live sheep heart dissection, riding a hovercraft and building rockets. They also learned about wind and solar energy, coding, designing, and programming robots.

Devin Floyd, senior program coordinator with STEM Global Action, told FOX10 News: “My favorite takeaway is always seeing the kids see that they can do something that they probably haven’t done before, or being exposed to something that they probably haven’t seen before.

“Representation is so important. What I love is that we have our college students who volunteer at the tables. They’re professionals, and they’re at the age where they can relate to the kids, interact with them and kind of just expose them and be a representation of that field,” he said.

Since its founding in 2013, STEM Global Action’s affiliate STEM NOLA has engaged with more than 155,000 students, 22,000 families and 5,000 schools.
