MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Rich’s Car Wash Player of the Week is Grayden Newell. He’s a very talented sophomore golfer out of Mary G. Montgomery.

Newell leads his team in both scoring and stroke average. MGM head coach Adam Binkley says Newell is always the first one out on the course and the last one to go home. He’s putting in the extra hours to be the best player he can be, and it translates to his performance during matches.

“The main thing about him is his character. He works hard at everything he does. He’s the first one here every day. He’s here no matter what. He’s playing or practicing every day and it’s almost dark when he leaves so he’s very dedicated.”

As the regular season comes to a close and the Vikings prepare for postseason play, Newell says he thinks his golf game is better now than it has ever been.

“I feel like my golf game has been the best this year out of every year but my mental game is pretty good, to just hit a bad shot and then next shot, they are good.”

Although Newell is only a sophomore, Coach Binkley says he’s a great role model for his fellow teammates.

“He’s a leader on our golf team. All the guys look up to him, even though he’s just a sophomore, because they see how hard he works and what he does. He’s going through a lot of changes with his swing right now. He’s grown like four inches from last year. He was a little short guy, so it’s been an adjustment for him but he’s battled through it and made the best of it and still has had a really, really good year so far.”

Newell is proud to receive this week’s award and says it’s a reflection of all the hard work he has put in over the years. He advises all golf players to do the same.

“Just practice as much as you can. Focus on your mental game, you know, that’s the main part of golf.”
