MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Blount High School hosted its first middle school math competition earlier today.

Students from nine Mobile County schools in grades six through eight participated. Math problems were chosen by referencing the Alabama State Department of Education’s course of study for mathematics.

FOX10 caught up with one of the Mobile County students who discussed their preparation strategy and one of the event organizers.

Atascia Gavin, a seventh grader at Booker T. Washington Middle School, said, “I have my own strategies. I make ‘em up myself but I do most of my math in my head.”

Melinda Williams, math instructional leader for middle schools, said, “Mobile County students are so excited. When all of them came in, they were so excited. They walked in, they were enthused. And what I hear from most of them is that it really made them think.”
