MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A former local basketball star is coming back to his home state to play college ball. Labaron Philon has flipped from Kansas and committed to play at Alabama next season.

Just five days after requesting Kansas to release him from his letter of intent, Labaron Philon announced he has committed to Alabama. The 6′4 guard is the 33rd-ranked player nationally and third ranked point guard in the country.

He was previously committed to Auburn while playing at Baker High School here in Mobile before flipping to Kansas.

During his time on the gulf coast, he won Alabama’s Mr. Basketball and was a two-time class 7A Player of the Year. He put up 2,334 points while playing for the Hornets and averaged 35 points per game before transferring to Link Academy in Branson, Missouri for his senior season.

The Crimson Tide was among the list of potential landing spots for Philon during both rounds of his recruitment. He will join his former 7A rival in the fall, Fairhope’s Spence Sims.

Nate Oats and company are building quite the roster ahead of next season.

Grant Nelson announced on social media today that he will return to Tuscaloosa for his 5th and final year of eligibility.

It’s still unclear whether or not Mark Sears will stay or go pro but after Alabama’s first trip to the Final Four in school history, there is a lot of hype around the program.

The Tide’s recruiting class now improves to second overall right behind Duke.
