BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - A big day for education in Alabama Friday as the Alabama Literacy Act went into full effect, and third grade student reading scores were released.

According to those scores, 91% of third graders are reading at or above grade level.

The Alabama Educators Association says these numbers show Alabama is putting in the work in getting those numbers where they need to be.

Just 9% of third graders, roughly 4,800, are not reading well, and the AEA says compared to last year, that’s a drastic improvement.

17% were reading below grade level last year, and the year before that, 23% of those students weren’t hitting the mark.

The AEA’s northern region manager says it’s a testament to educators across the state working to make sure kids are where they need to be.

“That’s a product of our educators working very hard, our administrator leaders providing resources that our teachers need and time to focus on reading, our parents are working with our children at home, children are working hard, so it’s good to see, those numbers are absolutely moving in the right direction,” said William Tunnell, the Northern Region Manager for the Alabama Educator’s Association.

State superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey says parents of students who did not meet expectations will be notified next week, and encourages those parents to work with their children’s schools to help develop a plan for their child’s success.
