Tyler Edwin Matthews was sentenced to serve 40 years in prison for manslaughter and aggravated assault with a weapon.

The case began on November 21, 2021, during an argument between Matthews and his boyfriend. The two were arguing via text messages when the boyfriend and his friend Mary Williamson arrived at Matthews’ Biloxi apartment on Lawrence Street.

Officials said the boyfriend was threatening to tell Matthews’ girlfriend about their affair. An altercation began, and Matthews pulled a gun and shot Mary Williamson. Williamson was also in possession of a gun, according to DA Parker.

After shooting Williamson, Matthews chased his boyfriend and shot him, and then left the apartment complex.

Biloxi Police and emergency medical personnel were able to save that man. Williamson died at the scene.

Matthews was later seen on video at a local bar before he fled to Ohio.

The United States Marshals Service arrested Matthews in December of 2021. He told investigators he threw the gun used in the shooting into a nearby wooded area, but it was never recovered.

Judge Christopher Schmidt sentenced Matthews to serve 40 years in prison.
