MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Audubon Society is recruiting volunteers to help protect nesting birds called least terns during the Fourth of July weekend.

Least terns are federally-protected birds and increased beach activity and loud noises can cause colonies to abandon their nesting sites.

Volunteers are at every colony site this weekend in hopes of limiting disruptions. Bird watchers encourage beachgoers to ask about the terns so they can spread awareness.

Rachell Pica, an Audubon Society coastal steward, says signs are posted to help spot where the birds are nesting.

“So first, before you pop those fireworks, you know make sure that you look at your surroundings, that you’re not near any colony or postings of the birds. ‘Concern for the terns’ we like to say, and also, ‘Share the shore, share the love,’” Pica said.

The birds are expected to leave their colonies and continue their journey in late July or early August.
