MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) -Tax-free weekend is coming a little sooner to the State of Mississippi.

This holiday weekend, people can buy clothes, back-to-school items, and more for seven percent off.

This year in Mississippi, it has been extended 24 hours starting July 12 and ending July 14, providing more time for people to go out and shop for items they might need.

Local business owner Robert Loeb says this is a big weekend for local businesses and explains why the date for sales tax weekend has been moved.

“I understand that some school systems are going to different schedules this year. So I think on the Gulf Coast, school starts like the 19th starts earlier this year. Lauderdale County, it’s still the same. So it’s the end of the end of July, the first part of August. So that’s one of the reasons they moved it up. There’s also a lot of competition between the states for tax-free weekends, and so, Mississippi is sort of going to jump by doing this,” said Loeb.

Only certain items like clothing, footwear, and specific school supplies priced under 100 dollars apply for the tax exemption.
