MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Preparations are underway worldwide for Operation Christmas Child, including locally. Operation Christmas Child packs shoeboxes with items and toys for children around the world.

The Christmas Shoeboxes are shipped to over 100 countries.

Operation Christmas Child in 2023 handed out more than 11.3 million Christmas shoeboxes — 10millon of those were from the United States. The goal in 2024 is 12 million shoeboxes.

We had the opportunity to speak with two local Operation Christmas Child organizers, Sheila Waters and Kelly D’Angelo, who explained how it all works and how you can get involved.

Two ways to pack a shoebox:

1. Pack a shoebox gift.

2. Build a shoebox online for $25.

Drop off during National Collection Week at a local drop-off location, November 18-25.

There are many ways you can help, including volunteering.

There’s also an upcoming opportunity to hear from a shoebox recipient and how it impacted his life. The event is:

Saturday, August 24th
