Shooting of 74-year-old by Loxley police under investigation by Baldwin Major Crimes Unit

LOXLEY, Ala. (WALA) - On July 11, 2024, the Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit was requested by the Loxley Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting that had occurred on Highway 90 in Loxley Alabama.

According to a release from the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 6:13 p.m. The Loxley Police were dispatched to 13681 HWY 90 in Loxley for a welfare check of a suicidal subject.

Upon arrival, Officers entered the open residence and contacted 74-year-old Glenn Dawson in an adjacent bedroom. According to Police Mr. Dawson was accompanied by two other people in the room, armed with a handgun, and would not comply with verbal commands to place his weapon down.

Police say Mr. Dawson then raised and pointed his handgun at one of the officers who in turn discharged his handgun, striking Dawson in the chest.

Life-saving measures were taken immediately by the officers on the scene, but Glenn Dawson ultimately succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

The Loxley Police Department has requested that the Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit conduct an independent review of this incident using non-agency Investigators This is the standard protocol for any type of officer-involved shooting within Baldwin County.
