Azalea City Con returns to downtown Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Azalea City Con will be celebrating its second year as the Gulf Coast’s most unique pop culture convention this July 20-21, 2024 at the Holiday Inn Downtown Historic District, Mobile, Alabama. An immersive, community-based pop culture event Azalea City Con gives fans a place to celebrate their love of film, art, comics, superheroes, cosplay, video and board games, and all things nerdy with a focus on makers and creative artists.

New to the convention for 2024 will be:

● A special version of speed dating, “Meet & Geek” hosted by local radio personality Matt McCoy, formerly of WABB 97-FM and currently with 92ZEW.

● Miniature Painting by James Washburn of Broken Dice Guild

● FX Makeup & Effects by Creative Collective of Talents & Time

● Bellydance for Beginners by Nisaa of Lotus Bellydance

● Improv Games for Beginners by Kelly Teague of Dad Company Improv

● Armor Pattern Making by Blue Knight Props

● Game Making and World Building by Bryan King of Neo Realms

● Medieval Fantasy LARP by Cerroneth Life Action Role Playing

● Film Scramble (submissions due before the convention at [email protected]) The Film Scramble welcomes local filmmakers to compete against one another by entering a 5-minute film using the guidelines provided on the website. Entries for the film scramble will be featured on the new Azalea City Con YouTube Channel and the winner will be announced on Sunday at the convention. Azalea City Con has an impressive guest list drawing from local, regional and national talent.

The Featured Guests for 2024 will be:

● Dino Andrade, Voice Cartoonist from Los Angeles. Dino is one of the actors who voiced Dracula in Last Voyage of the Demeter. He also worked on the upcoming Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game, The Mayor in FLCL: Grunge, Ya-Ya Ma in Jo-Jo’s Bizarre Adventure, a slew of Deadites in Evil Dead: The Game, and The Scarecrow from Batman: Arkham Asylum. Additionally, Dino has lent his voice to such high-profile properties as The New Looney Tunes (as Speedy Gonzales), Street Fighter 6, Minecraft Legends, Bidoof’s Big Stand, Fortnite, Wasteland 3, Demon Souls, Dishonored 2, Prey, Star Trek Online, Shimmer and Shine, Call of Duty, Dungeons & Dragons: Neverwinter, Brutal Legend, and Guitar Hero.

● Connor Andrade, Voice Cartoonist from Los Angeles and son of Dino. Connor stars as Grizz on the Cartoon Network hit series We Baby Bears, Nickelodeon, Disney and Apple TV while having voiced such iconic characters as Toddler Groot for Marvel and Baby Shark in Pink Fong and Baby Shark’s Space Adventure.

● Featured Author will be Craig A. Price, Jr., USA Today bestselling author of Claymore of Calthoria Trilogy. Returning this year will be local talent Fighting Owl Films and Flatline Comics, both based in Mobile, as well as visual artist Petalwing Studio, the pirates from B.O.S.S., Brethren of the Southern Shores and many artists and vendors. The convention will have an entire room dedicated to retro video games sponsored by Really Rad Weekend from Okaloosa Island, Fla., and a board and role-playing game room sponsored by Gulf Coast Gaming Alliance and Neo Realms. Artists Alley and vendor booths with pop culture themed art and merchandise for sale 10 AM to 5PM Saturday and Sunday. Amateur and professional costumers are encouraged to enter the cosplay contest. The contest will be held at 6 p.m., on Saturday and advance registration and judging is required. Daytime panels and activities will be family-friendly. After 8 p.m. there will be some adult-themed panels and activities suitable for ages 16 & up, including gaming sessions until midnight. Volunteers receive a free pass to the event in exchange for their help during the convention and there are still some volunteer positions available.
