GULF SHORES, Ala. (WALA) - The driver of an SUV who died following a two-vehicle crash in Gulf Shores last week has been identified as 74-year-old Stephen E. Spychalski of Gulfport, Miss.

The Gulf Shores Police Department said the wreck happened around 10:42 a.m. on Thursday in the 3700 block of Gulf Shores Parkway.

Authorities said officers were able to determine that a 2016 Lincoln Navigator SUV traveling north on Gulf Shores Parkway left the roadway and sideswiped a light pole in the median. The SUV continued traveling north and hit a boat and trailer being towed by a 2018 Chevy Silverado pickup truck that was stopped in the left turn lane on Gulf Shores Parkway at Cypress Bend Drive, GSPD said.

According to police, the force of the impact caused the boat to leave the trailer and come to rest in the southbound lanes of Gulf Shores Parkway.

Police said the driver of the Navigator was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck did not report any injuries.

The accident remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact the Gulf Shores Police Department at 251-968-2431.
