MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - As the start of school draws near, one organization wanted to help make sure students are ready to head back to class.

Around 1,500 backpacks were given away Thursday by the National Association of Buffalo Soldiers Trooper Motorcycle Club. The giveaway was held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Mardi Gras Park in downtown Mobile. There was also food and inflatables for the kids.

Reginald Marable, the national secretary for the organization, told FOX10 News he enjoys events like these for the community.

“My favorite takeaway from doing things like this is just seeing the happiness that you can bring into somebody’s life,” Marable said.

“You never know what somebody’s going through, and then when they come out and you’re able to help give them something that is necessary, that they may need, that they may not have the resources to get, and they go out and they’re having a good time, it just makes you feel good as a person when you’re trying to give back,” he said. “And you can see that it’s appreciated from individuals that, you know, you’re able to work with and help.”

The organization also plans to hold a ride through Africatown starting at 11 a.m. Saturday morning.
