CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz is headed to Texas for the 2024 All-Star Game.

De La Cruz joins 12 other hitters to make up the National League Reserves, meaning he won’t be a starter.

The second-year shortstop is the first Reds shortstop to make the Midsummer Classic since Zach Cozart in 2017.

At 22, he’s also the lone Reds player to make ASG this year.

In nearly 190 games over his first 2 seasons in Cincinnati, De La Cruz has been nothing short of electric in that span. In 2023, he gave Reds fans a taste of his raw talent. Whether that was hitting for the cycle against the Braves, or stealing home in Milwaukee, one of baseball’s top prospects has lived up to the hype.

In 2024, he’s provided Reds fans with more jaw-dropping moments. In April, De La Cruz became the first player in the Statcast era (since 2015) to hit a home run of more than 450 feet and hit an inside-the-park home run in the same game. He also showed off his speed when he stole 4 bases in the same game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Through the first 90 games this year, he’s posted a batting average of .247, slugging 15 home runs with 39 RBI.

As one of the fast players in baseball, De La Cruz also leads Major League Baseball in stolen bases with 43. That’s 14 more steals than Milwaukee’s Brice Turang, who’s second on that list with 29.

MLB’s All-Star Game is scheduled for Tuesday, July 16 at 8 P.M.
