With Hell Hole, the Catskills-based filmmaking collective known as the Adams family takes its first wobbly baby steps outside its homegrown horror comfort zone. Trading the group’s signature brand of lyrical, self-reflective terror for rambling, environmentalist sci-fi story set among a fracking crew living and working among industrial decay at the edge of a Balkan wilderness, the film is more interesting as an exercise in stretching genre tentacles than a satisfying narrative or artistic one-off. Still, it features enough of the cockeyed familial ruminations and loose improvisational aura for which the filmmakers have become known that their devotees will be more than pleased.
Heading up a fracking crew in the remote reaches of Serbia, Americans Emily (Toby Poser) and John (John Adams) find themselves at odds with the local workers and researchers who make sure their recently legalized extraction operation is above board to minimize environmental impact. When Kurt Russell shed his Disney child star image once and for all as the leathery, laconic renegade Snake Plissken in John Carpenter's dystopian action hit "Escape from New York," he seemed poised for a long career as a handsome, rough-and-tumble leading man, the John Wayne-Steve McQueen hybrid America needed now that both had hit the soil. Russell, however, had other plans.
For starters, Russell didn't dig the laconic shtick. After a tonally similar performance as the perpetually cheesed-off R.J. MacReady in Carpenter's "The Thing," the actor sought to send up his tough-guy persona in goofball action flicks like "Big Trouble in Little China" and "Tango & Cash." He also gleefully made a fool of himself in broad comedies (memorably/infamously in "Overboard" and "Captain Ron"), while playing in-over-their-heads everymen in thrillers like "The Mean Season" and "Unlawful Entry." He could still do the gruff act when...

The Apple TV+ series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," like the film series that inspired it, skips around dramatically throughout history. Recall that "Kong: Skull Island," which came out after 2014's "Godzilla," was set mostly in 1973 after opening with a flashback to 1944. "Legacy of Monsters" likewise jumps back and forth a lot, exploring a present-day timeframe c. 2015 and a much earlier timeline set in the mid-1950s. To show the legacy of humans that work at Monarch -- the secret government agency assigned to oversee and wrangle kaiju -- both time frames feature the character Lee Shaw. In the 1950s, Shaw was one of the founding members of Monarch. In the '10s, he becomes re-immersed in Monarch after encountering the show's lead character, Cate (Anna Sawai).
In the 1950s, Shaw is played by Wyatt Russell, the star of "Overlord," "Everybody Wants Some!!," and "Night Swim." In the '10s segments,...

Few directors have enjoyed as successful a run as John Carpenter did from the late 70s to the late 80s. The writer-director-composer cranked out nine notable theatrical flicks from 78 to 88, and while not many of them were theatrical hits, they’re all now considered classics, either of the bona fide or cult variety. The 90s, however, were not so kind to the man. Starting with the ill-fated Memoirs of an Invisible Man, which was a difficult production and, ultimately, a box office bomb, Carpenter struggled to mirror the success he’d enjoyed in the 80s. There’s no doubt that some of the titles have their supporters: In the Mouth of Madness is a genuinely entertaining nightmare of a movie, and his Showtime anthology Body Bags is enjoyable, if fairly forgettable – save for Carpenter’s extremely amusing performance as our undead host. And while yours truly is not a fan,...

Before he ever settled on a pitch to 20th Century Studios, Fede Alvarez invited close friends and colleagues, cinephiles, and horror connoisseurs, into his home. At this point in his career, the Uruguayan director had once already pulled off a magic trick by becoming the first person not named Sam Raimi to helm an Evil Dead movie. Miraculously, he was celebrated for that walk across cinematic holy ground. Now, Alvarez wanted to workshop an even more death-defying stunt. Eli Roth wanted to lean into the “anarchy” of adapting video game “Borderlands” for the big screen.
The director told Entertainment Weekly that he channeled the “insanity” of films like John Carpenter’s infamous “Escape from New York” from 1981 and Luc Besson’s 1997 film “The Fifth Element.” Both sci-fi adventure features later became cult classics.
“I wanted to make something totally bonkers and bat-shit crazy, that has the insanity of ‘The Fifth Element’ or ‘Escape From New York,'” Roth said. “I think there’s a spirit of anarchy and absurdity in the game. I wanted the movie to have that same spirit as well: a movie completely made by lunatics.”
“Borderlands” stars Cate Blanchett as Lillith, the leader of a ragtag group of space mercenaries, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, Arianna Greenblatt, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black. The film is adapted from the GearBox video game.

"Christmas comes early this year." Cineverse & Bloody Disgusting have debuted a disgusting new teaser trailer for horror sequel Terrifier 3, next in the Terrifier series of gory slasher films by director Damien Leone. We also posted a teaser trailer late last year for this one, which is getting a new trailer + poster for San Diego Comic-Con. In the third film, Art the Clown will unleash chaos on the unsuspecting residents of Miles County as they drift off to sleep on Christmas Eve.

Indie developer Clapperheads have announced that their mash-up of psychological horror, bodycam horror and John Carpenter’s The Thing in Zoochosis will launch on September 23 on Steam. The release date announcement has been accompanied by a new trailer, which as you might expect, turns into something out of Rob Bottin‘s dreams in a hurry.
For the uninitiated, Zoochosis is a first-person simulation title that utilizes a bodycam perspective to get that extra personal touch. You play a zookeeper about to start their first night shift. As you suit up and go about your rounds, you notice some strange behavior from some of the animals in the enclosures. It turns out that these animals have a parasite that is causing some nightmarish mutations in the zoo population. The bloodthirsty, murderous, body horror type of mutations. And it’s spreading.
You must identify the infected animals and make vaccines to cure...

Movies always go through a number of changes between an idea in the shower to streaming from your couch, whether minor (your protagonist now wears leather jackets instead of tweed suits) to major (he’s also a wild stunt man instead of a quiet professor). It’s not uncommon, for example, to lighten up some dark source material for a broader audience, so you know when the opposite occurs — a comedy becomes a heavy drama or high-stakes thriller — some choices were made.

It started as Dark Star (which itself started as John Carpenter’s USC master’s thesis), a comedy featuring an alien very obviously made out of a beach ball. “I went away from Dark Star...

Eddie Murphy has a lot of standalone movies that are great like Trading Places, Harlem Nights, and the more recent Dolomite is my Name, but he’s also been a bit of franchise gold in the past. Obviously, Beverly Hills Cop is the biggest and most recent example, but he’s also been part of 2 48 Hours movies, a couple Nutty Professor flicks, a couple Doctor Dolittle movies and is an integral part of the mega franchise that is Shrek. While we unfortunately have to call Coming to America a franchise now after that abysmal rehash that Amazon dropped on us, there is another movie and character that I actually wouldn’t mind being brought back and has potential, under the right writer and director combo, to be a fun time and maybe even fix some of the mistakes from its predecessor. While Pluto Nash and Norbit are all time stinkers...

World-ending apocalypses are inherently terrifying, but sometimes what comes after is even scarier. The remnants of humanity are left to pick up the pieces of a world torn apart by devastating catastrophe, with resources far scarcer than ever-present threats.
This week’s streaming picks belong to post-apocalyptic horror movies that explore life after the world as we know it has ended, where conditions are harsh and survival odds are low.
While the frequent recurring theme of post-apocalyptic movies highlights how humankind is its own worst enemy, these five titles take drastically different approaches. Some favor retro style, while others infuse their wastelands with a heaping helping of inhuman monsters.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Horror movies are a dime a dozen, so it's imperative that we celebrate the good ones when they arrive. Regrettably, audiences often miss out on a novel new entry to the genre due to bad or misleading marketing, poorly timed release dates, or an inability to grasp a unique concept, causing a potential blockbuster to flame out at the box office. On many occasions, such pictures will earn solid reviews from critics and go on to achieve cult status thanks to solid word-of-mouth. In other instances, however, many impeccably made horror pictures needlessly fade into obscurity after bombing in theaters and never find the success they deserve.
Well, I'm here to put an end to the madness. I've scoured the World Wide Web and located a handful of horror box office bombs with great RottenTomatoes scores in dire need of more attention. Some of these entries, like John Carpenter's classic "The Thing,...

Bring up the films of John Carpenter to any movie buff worth their weight in celluloid, and once they finish praying in the direction of Bowling Green, Kentucky, they'll start in on the essentials –- i.e. every movie in his oeuvre stretching from 1974's "Dark Star" to 1988's "They Live." From here, they'll single out 1994's "In the Mouth of Madness" as a return to peak form after the disappointing "Memoirs of an Invisible Man," and maybe share kind words about "Escape from L.A." "Vampires," "Ghosts of Mars," and, heck, even "The Ward." But that '74 -- '88 run is considered sacrosanct. You don't dispute this, and if you're fortunate enough to be a working filmmaker, you think long and hard about the wisdom of remaking one of these classics should a studio ever offer you the opportunity.

Garry Marshall's 1987 film "Overboard" is brisk and light, although the premise is a little dark. Kurt Russell plays Dean, a blue-collar widower who is hired by a spoiled heiress named Joanna Stayton (Goldie Hawn) to build a custom closet. Dean does quality work, but Joanna refuses to pay him because of a few small, insignificant details. Joanna is an entitled, spoiled brat who treats everyone poorly.
When Joanna later falls off of a yacht and begins suffering from amnesia, Dean picks her up from the hospital, telling her that she's actually his wife Annie.

In James Wan's "Furious 7," released in 2015, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) find themselves inside a supercar located many stories up in an Abu Dhabi skyscraper. They desperately need a chip that's embedded in the vehicle (don't ask), but things go south when the villains realize their plan. In order to escape, Dom does the only thing he knows how to do: he drives his way out of the situation, despite being indoors. After knocking over several of the baddies and evading many a gunshot, Dom realizes the only way the team can accomplish their mission is if he and Brian speed through the window and crash into a neighboring skyscraper.
The scene is, of course, absolutely ridiculous, but Wan and his team give it a sense of majesty and wonder, and the result is one of the best stunts in "Fast and Furious" franchise history.

Ron Shelton's "Dark Blue" was a victim of impossible expectations. James Ellroy wrote the screenplay in 1993 (then titled "The Plague Season"), envisioning Kurt Russell in the role of racist LAPD Sergeant Eldon Perry. The story takes place in a jittery city awaiting the riot-inciting verdict of the Rodney King trial. We know what's coming in the macro, but the micro tale of Perry and his partner Bobby Keough (Scott Speedman) being forced to frame a couple of ex-cons for murders committed by informants loyal to their corrupt superior Jack Van Meter (Brendan Gleeson) could break either way. This being Ellroy, the master of corrosive neo-l.A. noir, we're expecting everything to go down twisted. But with the riots looming, Perry and Keough's errand feels destined to get extra messy.
Given its long road to a greenlight, "Dark Blue" acquired the aura of a passion project for Ellroy. And since he tended to spin sprawling,...

The first proposition, Brenez theorizes, is as follows: “Modern cinema exists to come to grips with contemporary evil.” In many ways, this statement—one of many piercing axioms and assertions that populate her writing—crystallizes not only Ferrara’s cinema but also Brenez’s film-critical and curatorial project since the late 1980s. Jimmy Kimmel is finally hosting “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” the way it’s supposed to be done — in front of a studio audience. The landmark game show returns with an all-celeb edition for its 25th anniversary on Wednesday night, and although this is the third season he’s been in the chair that Regis Philbin made famous, this is the first time fans have finally been allowed back in the studio.
“I really wanted to do it the proper way in front of people because you like to hear people laugh at your jokes,” Kimmel says. “Also, the drama that goes along with a couple of hundred people watching the action happen is an important part of the show. I mean, doing the show in front of nobody is no fun.”
But that’s what Kimmel had to do in March 2020 when he first came on to host the primetime series’ revival.

“New York has a new problem,” declared the tagline for Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, complete with a picture of Jason’s hockey mask behind the city’s iconic skyline. To some modern readers, that tagline might seem silly. Sure, New York has its problems, but the arrival of a near-invincible, teleporting killer is orders of magnitude worse than anything currently happening in the Big Apple. Why would producers lump Jason Voorhees in with those other issues?
But when the movie released back in 1989, New York City existed in the popular imagination as a cesspool of violence, corruption, and danger. It was a nigh apocalyptic hellscape and promised to be a true challenge for the world’s most proficient killer of horny teens.
Sadly, it turns out that New York didn’t need to worry about Jason at all. Outside of a killer crane shot in Times Square,...

Development continues on a new film adaptation of "Escape from New York", based on the 1981 science fiction action feature directed by John Carpenter, that starred Kurt Russell as 'Snake Plissken':
"...a crime-ridden United States has converted 'Manhattan Island' in New York City into the country's maximum-security prison.
“When 'Air Force One' is purposely crashed in New York City, ex-soldier and current federal prisoner 'Snake Plissken' (Russell) is given just 24 hours to go in and rescue the President..."

Longlegs, the latest horror project from The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel director Osgood Perkins, is set to reach theatres on July 12th (JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray gave the movie a 9/10 review you can read at This Link) – and while the final trailer was already released a week ago, the marketing continues with the new “Heartbeat” promo, which shows the first time lead actress Maika Monroe (It Follows) saw Nicolas Cage (Dream Scenario) as his serial killer character. Apparently the filmmakers even had a heart rate monitor on Monroe during the filming of the scene, because the promo reveals how high her heart rate got when she had to face Cage’s Longlegs. You can check it out in the embed above – and don’t worry, the appearance of Cage’s character is obscured.

It can’t be denied that as far as martial arts movies go, the best ones come from Asia, particularly Hong Kong during their action heyday, which was arguably the 70s, 80s and first half of the ’90s. That said, martial arts movies were also making a foothold in the States at the time, thanks mainly to Bruce Lee-mania following the release of Enter the Dragon. Before that movie, very few actors in Hollywood seemed like they were credible martial artists, except maybe James Coburn, a student of Lee’s, who pulled off some pretty good-looking moves in the otherwise silly Our Man Flint movies. Steve McQueen also had training but didn’t use martial arts on screen.
Up to then, though, the most notable uses of martial arts in movies usually revolved around Judo, with James Cagney showing off some good moves in the film Blood on the Sun,...

In 1968, Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey was released, in 1979, Ridley Scott's Alien – two movies that changed the science fiction genre forever. In between, in 1974, Dark Star quietly flew by – the debut film of Los Angeles film school student John Carpenter, shot for pennies.
It didn't change anything, and was criminally underrated – but now it's impossible to watch either Kubrick or Scott without remembering the fate of the characters of Dark Star.
Dark Star, a $60,000 film now considered a sci-fi classic, was the directorial debut of horror maestro John Carpenter. The film, which recently turned fifty, is as far removed from what came before it as it is from what came after – it is neither a space odyssey nor a space opera, but rather a cold, dark, and absurd story of people stranded together on a malfunctioning interstellar ship.

Good space fiction rarely appears on movie screens, and there are even fewer good horror films set in a spaceship or alien habitat. The 2017 film Life, which finally landed on Netflix on July 1, is a worthy and criminally underrated representative of both genres – sci-fi and horror.

What to expect from a genre festival honoring the un-expected? The Fantasia International Film Festival returns to Montréal for its 28th edition from July 18 to August 4 and it promises a killer lineup — with over 125 features and more than 200 shorts in total. The festival’s third and final programming announcement, made exclusive to IndieWire first, includes features from Steven Kostanski, Eugene Kotlyarenko, Scooter McCrae, and more.
André Forcier will show on closing night for the festival with the world premiere of “Ababouiné.” The filmmaker’s latest is a distinctly regional period piece and buzzy potential masterpiece about a group of kids growing up in 1950s Quebec under the harsh eye of the Catholic Church. Fantasia has awarded the film’s director the Prix Denis-Héroux, an accolade “bestowed for exceptional contribution to the development of Quebec genre cinema.”

Producer/directed Sean Cunningham has admitted multiple times that, when making his seminal slasher movie "Friday the 13th," he was directly hoping to ape the success of John Carpenter's "Halloween." The latter, released in 1978, made $70 million on a tiny budget of about $350,000. Cunningham decided to up the budget of "Friday" to a whopping $550,000, and he, miraculously, achieved his goal; "Friday the 13th" made almost $60 million.
The story of "Friday the 13th," as any bloodthirsty Gen-Xer can tell you, follows a group of camp counselors who have arrived at Camp Crystal Lake in New Jersey to prepare it for the summer's coming campers. They entertain themselves by smoking weed, engaging in coitus, and telling ghost stories of the poor child -- Jason Voorhees -- who drowned in Crystal Lake a few years before, unsupervised when his counselors were distracted by their vices. Longlegs, the latest horror project from The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel director Osgood Perkins, is set to reach theatres on July 12th – and with just eleven days to go until that date is upon us, the final trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Nicolas Cage (Dream Scenario) stars in Longlegs alongside Maika Monroe (It Follows), Alicia Witt (Urban Legend) and Blair Underwood (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D). The story Perkins crafted for the film is said to be “in the vein of classic Hollywood psychological thrillers.” Monroe takes on the role of FBI Agent Lee Harker, a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer. As the case takes complex turns, unearthing evidence of the occult, Harker discovers a personal connection to...

Trejo, best known for his iconic roles in Machete, Heat, and Desperado, has now revealed an unexpected side to his larger-than-life persona: he’s a gamer, and not just any game has caught his attention, but the zombie survival hit 7 Days to Die.
In a tweet that quickly went viral, Trejo shared a screenshot from 7 Days to Die featuring a character who bears an uncanny resemblance to his signature tough-guy look. For us horror nerds, the concept of "spooky season" is as sacrosanct as it is nebulous. Most people agree the "season" occurs in and around fall and the month of October, but some believe fall begins in August, while others (like myself) will be celebrating all things creepy and kooky all the way through Thanksgiving.
Into this vague, ever-changing definition of seasonal terrors wades the summer movie versus the spooky season movie. Conventional wisdom tends to dictate these terms; generally, movies set on or around Halloween, with colored leaves in abundance, will be considered perfect for the fall, while horror films involving sunny beaches, lakes, and skimpy clothing would be considered summer horror.
That's why "I Know What You Did Last Summer" feels like an anomaly within such general labeling. Released on October 17, 1997, the film became a spooky season hit. Yet everything from its setting, its vibe, and its freakin' title screams the summer season,...

Kurt Russell's most memorable character from his long history on the big screen, which stretches all the way back to when Walt Disney was still alive, is probably Snake Plissken from John Carpenter's classic sci-fi action movie "Escape from New York". But in an alternate universe, it could have been Han Solo or Luke Skywalker.
A few years before Snake Plissken came along, Russell was one of many actors who auditioned for the "Star Wars" roles that would eventually make Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford huge stars. However, George Lucas couldn't figure out which role he like Russell in better. With another job opportunity on the table to star in a Western TV series called "The Quest," Russell opted not to wait around for Lucas to make up his mind, withdrew from consideration, and the rest is history. But it would seem "Star Wars" still lingers in the back of Kurt Russell's mind.

A case could be made that Howard Hawks is one of the greatest American directors of all time. His career spanned from the silent era in the mid-1920s all the way to 1970, and along the way, he made some of the most memorable classics the film industry has ever seen. Hawks directed one of the first gangster movies, made two of the best screwball comedies of all time with "Bringing Up Baby" and "His Girl Friday," created two of the best Humphrey Bogart/Lauren Bacall films ever (and an influential noir classic) with "To Have and Have Not" and "The Big Sleep," and directed at least three classic John Wayne Westerns in the form of "Red River," "Rio Bravo," and "El Dorado." Not too shabby.
But everyone has to start somewhere, and Hawks got a job working as a propman during the summers in the earliest days of Hollywood.

Comedy is an art form that to truly succeed requires mastery of both subtlety and audacity, and a keen sense of timing. But usually two out of three is enough to pull some chuckles from an audience, and so a veneer of comedy finds its way into a lot of genres besides its own. And a little like how science fiction comments on our current era, comedy also tends to highlight current storytelling trends and topics, making it a natural companion to the speculative genre.
Unlike how Airplane killed the disaster movie in the ’70s by brutally skewering every trope that that genre relied on, comedy’s place in science fiction is often evolutionary and frequently affectionate. Something about this blend simply enhances the way sci-fi comments on us as a species. Call it symbiotic—a raucous relationship similar to Eddie Brock and Venom’s bonkers movie marriage. But don’t call it Shirley.

Back in 1979, the first Alien movie became a sensation that set the bar really high for science fiction horrors. Its legacy still lives on, not only in numerous sequels and spin-offs, but also in films that try to ride the same hype train that Ridley Scott rode.
If you think all those attempts to make an Alien-like movie are failures, think again, as 7 years ago the world saw a decent all-star take on this sci-fi gem. Luckily, it lands on Netflix already next week, so it’d be great to see if it stands the test of time.
The plot of this flick revolves around a group of six astronauts of the International Space Station who make an unprecedented discovery: they find the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. However, the further their research goes, the more terror the rapidly evolving life-form brings to the crew, and they must fight with it to survive.

Lucy Kerr’s unnerving debut, “Family Portrait,” opens with a sequence where a character is intent on materializing the title in literal fashion. Katy (Deragh Campbell), a 20-something, tries to wrangle adults and children to take a group photo together on a calid afternoon among the greenery in the family’s vast estate. As her relatives walk towards the chosen spot, the camera moves horizontally while bodies come in and out of the frame. Katy, wearing a frustrated expression, struggles to get them to cooperate. Their scattered movement and Katy’s exasperation give the scene a dreamlike uncanniness.
Could these images be Katy’s unconscious preemptively anxious about the task ahead? For the subsequent scenes, Kerr fragments the large group into smaller cohorts settled throughout the property, each having exchanges ranging from the perils of office life to long-established anecdotes. But while free-floating and airy in its construction, the film’s deceiving familiarity slowly erodes,...

Spirit Halloween introduces new animatronics for 2024 (including Emily and Victor from Corpse Bride)

Now that the long, hot summer is here, fans of the macabre are looking forward to the next big thing: Halloween. Spirit Halloween stores will be opening in August, which is right around the corner, so the spooky season giant has released the details on their newest animatronic decorations. I don’t know about you, but I take great delight in walking into a Spirit Halloween store for the first time each year, stepping on those plastic mats, and watching the ghoulish animatronics move, scream and light up.
For this year’s offerings, Spirit Halloween is rolling out a mixture of original demons and monsters alongside the brand names we all know and love. Here’s a sampling of the animatronics available for Halloween 2024 while supplies last:
Emily and Victor of Corpse Bride – Both of the characters from Tim Burton’s classic film are motion activated, moving and speaking lines from the movie.

Since taking over in 2022, Nifff director Pierre-Yves Walder has made the festival’s socially tinged retrospective program a hallmark of his tenure. Rounding out a so-called trilogy that started with queer representation then followed with a gender focus that put the femme fatale and scream queen under the spotlight, this year’s retrospective will tackle class conflict in cheeky terms, putting the screws to those swells with a 20 film program titled Eat the Rich.
“Genre cinema has always treated questions of predation, exploitation and everyday brutality with such complexity,” says Walder, “which makes it so interesting to how this theme evolves over the course of film history.”
The far-ranging program tackles nearly a century worth of upper-class perfidy, beginning with Yakov Protazanov’s early-Soviet sci-fi “Aelita” from 1924 and running through to Jenna Cato Bass’ South African servitude creeper “Good Madam” from 2021. In between are landmarks like Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rope...
