We recently hosted a poll asking which TV legend should be the next person to receive the 2025 SAG life achievement award. The overwhelming top choice was Emmy and SAG winner Jean Smart. She received 31.84% of support among the 18 candidates we offered for consideration.
When we offered a similar poll last year, double Oscar winner Barbra Streisand was the top choice, and then she was indeed selected for this honor on the Screen Actors Guild Awards. We created a separate poll earlier this month about film legends with Meryl Streep receiving the most support over Glenn Close, Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Lange.
The SAG-AFTRA selection committee will likely be announcing their next recipient in the near future. The 2025 ceremony will be live February 23 streaming on Netflix.

There was no greater comedic wild man than John Belushi. A force on and off the screen, the guy stands as one of the most influential of his generation. And while we know this wasn’t always the best thing for others, his persona and charisma were unlike anything the world of entertainment had seen before. Tragically, Belushi himself would succumb to his addictions in 1982, but he still had a support system that wanted him to stick around forever, chiefly in Blues Brother-in-arms Dan Aykroyd.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, Aykroyd remembered having to find the balance of keeping Belushi without being overbearing to the point he would turn on him. “I was pretty hands on and monitoring his behavior minute to minute — and then also letting the leash out a little bit, knowing that, if I pull too hard or resisted, he would head up into the trees. He’d be gone.

[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in November 2022 and has since been updated.]
It’s an election year in the United States. So, uh, how you doing, buddy?
Even in a world as spectacularly screwed up as ours [insert long list of alarming, urgent problems we have no practical solutions for, ending with some half-assed joke about the planet being on fire that you’ve definitely heard before!], the American political landscape is especially rocky terrain. In a post-Trump-presidency U.S., democracy is on the ballot and faith in both our electoral system and fellow humans is at an all-time low.
But, you knew that. And as the 2024 election cycle has taken it’s many twists and turns, it’s difficult not to feel fatigued by the circular nature of our political landscape and the lack of real progress made on a number of major crises boiling over at this very moment. Even international bystanders are probably dreading the death march to Election Day this year, and the sea to shining shit storm it will likely be. So to keep your head above water as we head into election season, IndieWire staffers have...

There have been a lot of questions surrounding HBO's upcoming "The Penguin" series. The show will see Colin Farrell step into the spotlight after he wowed everyone with his performance as Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot a.k.a. the Penguin in Matt Reeves' "The Batman." Playing a cross between Joe Pesci's Tommy DeVito in "Goodfellas" and Bob Hoskins' Harold Shand in "The Long Good Friday," Farrell was almost unrecognizable in the role. The actor had "unbridled fun" with the character, disappearing behind the extensive prosthetics to bring us a version of the infamous Batman rogue that was much more of a wise guy/crime boss and less of a "hideous penguin man of the sewer" (to borrow a phrase used to describe Danny DeVito's Penguin in "Batman Returns").
But while Farrell was undeniably one of the best things about "The Batman," whether he can sustain an entire premium drama remains to be seen.

Recently, I wrote an article about how Ron Howard’s Cocoon was hard to find in any format. It came out on DVD many years ago but went out of print and has never been issued on Blu-ray. You also can’t find it digitally on any platform. This is a perfect example of why you should always hang on to your physical media, as I’m lucky enough to own the now out-of-print DVD of that movie, and while it’s far from an ideal copy, it’s something.
But that got me thinking. What other movies are hard to find? I opened up the forum on Twitter, and I was shocked by how many prominent films aren’t available digitally and have gone out of print on disc, making them all the more precious for collectors. At the same time, there are some happy endings, such as Martin Campbell’s No Escape,...

As soon as Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker was announced, the wheels of excitement began to spin at breakneck speed, celebrating a cinematic experience that promised to dance on the line between classic wickedness & profound character exploration. With Todd Phillips at the helm, the flick was never just going to be another notch on the superhero genre’s belt; it was pegged to be a juggernaut of 2019—a dark character study set to the nostalgic backdrop of the ‘80s.
Joaquin Phoenix in Joker (2019) | Warner Bros. Pictures
Phoenix’s portrayal of the Joker, an aspiring comic whose dreams crumble into a harlequin of madness, not only enraptured audiences but also raised eyebrows when reports of on-set challenges and actual uproar in a Brooklyn subway reached the ears of the Screen Actors Guild. Sources on set claimed that although actors are usually guaranteed breaks during filming, the extras, stuck in the car, were not given this relief.

Al Pacino got his breakout role as Michael Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. The actor got an Oscar nomination for his compelling performance in the film. The actor reprised the role in the sequels The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III. While audiences still love the trilogy as a whole, they consider the first film to be the best film among the three.
Al Pacino and Marlon Brando in The Godfather | Paramount Pictures
Pacino got to share screen space opposite Marlon Brando who played Michael’s father, Vito Corleone. However, that combo almost didn’t happen as another bonafide actor was first attached to the role of Michael. Jack Nicholson turned down The Godfather in favor of other projects as he found them more interesting than Coppola’s film.

Following his recent assassination attempt, Donald Trump was spotted with no visible scar on his ear, leading to a flurry of speculation.
The new photos intensify the mystery, particularly following Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris's recent revelations about the attempted shooting during a House Homeland Security hearing.
As Donald Trump recovers, the absence of a visible scar on his ear adds to the intrigue surrounding the assassination attempt.

From his very first appearance in 1940’s Batman #1, the Joker has been an evil genius, a man whose madness allowed him to concoct plans that no one could anticipate. But the most recent Oscar-winning version of the character (and it’s weird to realize there’s more than one!) couldn’t be more different from that idea. Todd Phillips, director and writer (with Scott Silver) of 2019’s Joker, and maestro of the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux, recently went so far as to explain the difference between Arthur Fleck, the character he and Joaquin Phoenix have developed for the screen, and the classical image of Batman’s arch-nemesis.
Whereas nearly every other Joker has been fairly described as “the Clown Prince of Crime,” Phillips told Empire magazine that “we would never do that… Because Arthur clearly is not a criminal mastermind. He was never that.” As portrayed by Phoenix, Arthur...

A new trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux just hit the internet, pleasing fans of comic book movies and absolutely thrilling fans of “slow motion gyrating on staircases” movies. Todd Phillips’ follow-up to 2019’s shockingly successful, billion dollar-earning Joker features several lavish musical numbers involving Lady Gaga, and apparently zero references to Batman, who is presumably still just a small boy in this increasingly confusing universe.
One intriguing detail in the trailer: Steve Coogan is in it! The British comedy star can briefly be seen in some kind of an interrogation room, along with Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, sandwiched between two TV cameras.
When he appeared in the earlier teaser trailer, U.K. fans were shocked by Coogan’s presence, with some likening it to a “jump scare” and others claiming that they were “completely taken out” of the world of the movie when Coogan showed up. Although the best...

Updated: Donald Trump may be laying the groundwork for scrambling plans for another presidential debate, suggesting that Fox News, and not ABC News, should be the host.
ABC News had been slated to host the debate between Trump and President Joe Biden on Sept. 10. But now that Biden has dropped out of the race, it is unclear whether those plans will happen. Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, but if she wins the nomination, it will be her campaign operation to decide.
Trump, meanwhile, posted on Truth Social, “My debate with Crooked Joe Biden, the Worst President in the history of the United States, was slated to be broadcast on Fake News ABC, the home of George Slopadopolus, sometime in September. Now that Joe has, not surprisingly, has quit the race, I think the Debate, with whomever the Radical Left Democrats choose, should be held on FoxNews, rather than very biased ABC.

Joe Biden announcing today that he is dropping out of the 2024 presidential race has given Damon Lindelof “genuine excitement for the election.”
The first significant Hollywood donor to go public with a call for supporters to withhold their cash after Biden’s disastrous June 27 debate performance and to have the 81-year-old incumbent end his reelection bid, the Lost showrunner Sunday took to social media to now praise Potus. Declaring “the Dembargo is lifted,” Lindelof also said he “will fully support whoever can catalyze passion and engagement across our country… our Entire country, no caveats.”
As you can see, Emmy winner Lindelof didn’t offer Vice President Kamala Harris an endorsement, as Biden did, but complimented the Veep for her own reaction to Biden’s announcement:

Declaring “the Dembargo is lifted,” Lindelof also said he “will fully support whoever can catalyze passion and engagement across our country… our Entire country, no caveats.”
As you can see, Emmy winner Lindelof didn’t offer Vice President Kamala Harris an endorsement, as Biden did, but complimented the Veep for her own reaction to Biden’s announcement:

Robert De Niro, an outspoken critic of Donald Trump, reacted Sunday afternoon as news spread on Joe Biden’s decision not to seek a second term.
De Niro offered his “respect, admiration, and affection” to Biden for his decision.
“In an act of shrewd politics and selfless patriotism, Joe Biden is stepping aside to clear the path for another Democrat to become president . . . because there is nothing more important for our country than defeating Donald Trump at the ballot box. With respect, admiration, and affection, thank you Mr. President!”

Hollywood reacted to Biden’s announcement that he will halt his re-election campaign and endorse Kamala Harris for president on Sunday. Many, including names such as Barbra Streisand, Lee Daniels, the Clintons and the Obamas, celebrated Biden’s decision as a heroic and selfless move for the country. Several politicians, including the Clintons and Elizabeth Warren, and those in Hollywood alike, including Shonda Rhimes and Damon Lindelof, also endorsed Harris.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote.

Is there anything Maya Rudolph can’t do? It’s a serious question, as the comedy superstar reigns as this year’s Emmy nominations Mvp. Rudolph earned four nominations — a stunning achievement in itself, but made even more impressive because those nods come from three different programs. She’s nominated in comedy lead actress for Apple TV+’s “Loot” (just renewed for a third season), in character voice-over for her role as Connie the Hormone Monstress in Netflix’s animated “Big Mouth,” and in comedy guest actress for her hosting stint on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” (which also got her an original music and lyrics nod for her monologue tune).
It’s quite a year for Emmy overachievers. Several acting stars also landed writing noms, like Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Richard Gadd (“Baby Reindeer”) and Donald Glover (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”). Others nominated thesps are also producers on their nominated best series.

Have you ever taken note of the unimaginable lengths to which actors go to breathe life into their characters, often dancing on the knife edge between dedication & danger? Actors even adhere to an intense diet that keeps them in tip-top shape due to the intense pressure to appear flawless in the entertainment business.
Indeed, it’s no secret that stars such as Heath Ledger, Hilary Swank, Robert De Niro, and Christian Bale are the poster face for method acting, going to great lengths that sometimes tip the scales towards the extreme. Speaking of tipping the scales, take into account the astounding, almost metamorphic weight fluctuations these actors have undergone.

And we can’t deny that, in this high-stakes game of physical transformation, Bale stands as the master illusionist, sculpting his physique to the brink for the sake of cinematic authenticity.

In 2023, we haven’t predicted that the Christmas and New Year’s box office would serve up a financial feast without the cherry on top of a box-office Goliath like the years before. Bucking the trend, the big screen’s end-of-year bash didn’t lean on a single titan to rake in the crowds.
Instead, a colorful medley of cinematic treats—from the whimsical Wonka to the deep-sea adventures in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom—acted as a team of spirited workhorses, charming audiences and, of course, filling up the industry’s coffers.

Ron Howard is reportedly developing a sequel to the 1991 hit film Backdraft, and Glen Powell is said to be considering joining up.
Here’s an interesting story which suggests that Backdraft, the 1991 firefighting drama may be getting a sequel. Well, another sequel that is given that Universal Pictures Home Entertainment released a direct-to-video follow-up in 2019. Given that Ron Howard’s production company are involved this time though, we’d imagine that should this come to fruition, this one would be a proper bells and whistles sequel with a sizeable budget and lots of movie stars.
One movie star whose name was almost certain to pop up was that of Glen Powell.
He’s the man of the moment right now and he’s not averse to putting in a turn in legacy follow-ups either. Powell is currently appearing in Twisters, a loose follow-up to the 1996 film, Twister. He’s also...

Who needs a house of horrors when you can stride alongside Philippe Petit, high above the hustle & bustle of 1970s New York, on a death-defying tightrope walk that’ll make your palms sweat and your head spin? Well, Robert Zemeckis’ 2015 biographical drama, The Walk, led you on a cinematic tightrope where you may find your stomach doing somersaults.
In this vertiginous venture, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Philippe Petit, we were invited to tangibly tread, albeit vicariously, between the iconic Twin Towers, chasing the footsteps of the legendary French high-wire artist. Zemeckis didn’t just let you watch; he placed you on that slender cable in the air, conjuring realism through the big screen that neither Petit’s own memoir nor the gripping documentary could.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s Good Will Hunting has been regarded as the beginning of their careers in Hollywood. While both had starred in other works over the years, none were as significant as this. The film became a classic for many reasons, starring Robin Williams, alongside Damon and Affleck also playing an important role in the story. While their performances were impeccable, other contributions helped them win an Oscar for the film.

Damon and Affleck were the ones who actually wrote the film, having crafted the script together and then pitched it to the studio. While that is impressive on its own, many would be surprised to know that the original movie was very different.

Director Michael Mann's magnum opus is 1995's "Heat." The movie's sprawling shoot-out scene (the best of its kind) is what many most remember about "Heat," but the picture doesn't only rely on action. "Heat" is just as compelling when Detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) and robber Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) are sitting down for a cup of coffee. Mann's next film, 1999's "The Insider," relies only on dialogue scenes to keep up the tension and easily succeeds.
"The Insider" is nearly as long as "Heat" and is just as compelling despite there being no action scenes to break up the talky bits. Mann is one of our best action filmmakers, but his talents extend past action movies. (Read our full ranking of Mann's films here.)
A journalism thriller, "The Insider" recounts the story of a 1996 "60 Minutes" expose on the tobacco industry. (The story had previously been detailed...

The ‘unofficial’ James Bond film that met with lots of legal hurdles. And the comedy that sounded different – until The Sopranos came along…
Sean Connery had vowed he was never going to return as James Bond after 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever. Meanwhile, a man called Kevin McClory had agreed not to exercise his screen rights to the story of Thunderball until 1975. Yet the highest profile ‘unofficial’ Bond project would bring them both together, as Never Say Never Again did battle with the official 007 film Octopussy at the 1983 box office.
A different battle played out in 1999, as Robert De Niro took the plunge into comedy with Analyze This. It’d be an early hit in a year that was awash with them – yet the idea of a mob boss seeing a shrink, that seemed original when the film was conceived – was about to slam head-first into a brand new TV show…...

There were bigger movie stars than Al Pacino in the 1970s, but between 1971 and 1975, he gave six utterly electric performances that placed him in the American film acting stratosphere alongside the likes of Marlon Brando, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson, and Robert De Niro. And as brilliant as those guys were, the virtuosity on display in "Panic in Needle Park," "The Godfather," "Scarecrow," "Serpico," "The Godfather Part II" and "Dog Day Afternoon" made a solid case for Pacino as the best of the bunch. He could be seductive, sympathetic, vulnerable, pathetic and terrifying –- sometimes all in the same movie. And his peers were dazzled enough to nominate him for four straight Oscars.
The full range of Pacino's genius can be found in Michael Corleone's journey from principled World War II returnee to brother-killing monster, but for sheer thespian fireworks, you can't top his live-wire portrayal of bank robber Sonny Wortzik...

Robert De Niro ranted. Bette Midler blared about “autocracy.” Lea DeLaria declared war. But Donald Trump, though convicted in New York and shot in Pennsylvania, is still marching toward Milwaukee, where the Republican National Convention begins tomorrow.
Meanwhile, George Clooney called for a new Democrat nominee. Rob Reiner seconded the motion. Damon Lindelof went all in, calling for a donor strike. But their forsaken champion, Joe Biden, is still slouching toward Chicago, intent on securing his party’s nomination at the Democratic convention next month.
When this mess resolves—as it must, sooner or later—Hollywood might want to rethink its political habits. Because the current approach clearly isn’t working.
Hysterical displays on social media or the red carpet don’t win votes. More, they become click-bait for right-leaning sites like Breitbart.com, which has made a cottage industry of logging and highlighting celebrity political tantrums.

The ’70s were an important period for Hollywood, which saw the rise of many auteurs, who redefined the medium, and Hollywood giants like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, etc. Shelley Duvall was one of the prominent names that garnered traction during this period following the actor’s appearance in her frequent collaborator Robert Altman’s Nashville.
However, her biggest challenge arrived when she joined forces with auteur Stanley Kubrick, most notable for his knack for perfection, which ended up being extremely excruciating for Duvall.

When it comes to adaptations of acclaimed novels, straying away from the source material is often a recipe for disaster. However, this doesn’t apply to Stanley Kubrick, as despite not sticking to the original book by Stephen King, 1980’s The Shining became a major critical hit, which saw Duvell delivering an iconic performance.

Now showing, this week’s film quiz features questions on animated heroes, real-life villains, and fictional movies within movies.
There are a couple of movies about making movies out now – MaXXXine sees Mia Goth’s aspiring movie star bag a role in a 1980s horror sequel, while Fly Me To The Moon has Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum stage moon-landing footage as a Plan B for NASA in 1969. Accordingly, this week’s film quiz has a whole round on fictional films within real films – think more The Purple Rose Of Cairo in The Purple Rose Of Cairo than “Argo”in Argo.
Once you’ve completed all three rounds, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post. As always, this is all just for fun, but please let us know how you did in the comments (scores out of 30 this week!

Sylvester Stallone has taken to Instagram to set the record straight on a supposed feud with Robert De Niro. To make a long story short, it never happened, with Stallone cautioning fans that you can’t believe everything you read.

“I just got back from the set of Tulsa King and just want to address something that I think is kind of an absurd rumor about myself and Robert De Niro never wanting to work with each other again,” Stallone said. “And having all sorts of angry comments about our stance on life and our philosophies, whatever. We’ve never had this discussion, probably never will, and I just want to say you can’t believe everything you read.“

Hollywood leading man Kevin Costner took a huge risk to bring his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga, to life. Now, it looks like that huge gamble has not paid off in the way that the actor hoped, as the second installment of this Western epic has been pushed back. So, what do we know?
Kevin Costner Left A Sure Thing With Yellowstone
For the last few years, viewers have been enthralled with Kevin Costner’s turn as the head of Dutton Ranch, John Dutton, in Yellowstone. Many viewers agree that this was a role tailor-made for the legendary actor. In the same way that Robert De Niro is in his element with crime movies, Kevin Coster is at his best in Westerns.
There has been a lot of speculation and debate among fans as to what finally led Kevin Costner to walk away from the Yellowstone role he loved.

In David Hinton’s new documentary “Made in England: The Films of Powell & Pressburger,” Martin Scorsese talks about the profound influence the films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger had on him.
A young, asthmatic Scorsese grew up largely an indoor child when American films weren’t licensed to television, so he feasted on the duo’s great British films like “The Red Shoes” and “Tales of Hoffmann.” Co-written and narrated by Scorsese, “Made in England” makes direct connections between a Powell and Pressburger film like “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp” and Scorsese’s “The Age of Innocence” and “Raging Bull.” In one remarkable sequence, Hinton even crosscuts between Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) from “Taxi Driver” and Boris Lermontov (Anton Walbrook) from “The Red Shoes,” as Scorsese narrates, “They’re both characters on the edge of things, listening, observing other people, always on the verge of exploding.
