Most of Marvel Studios’s films are the cinematic equivalent of breadcrumbs, which have been dropped into theaters strategically so as to keep one looking for the next sequel or crossover, when the endless televisual exposition will eventually, theoretically yield an event of actual consequence. Occasionally, however, a Marvel film transcends this impersonality and justifies one’s patience. Weird, stylish, and surprisingly lyrical, Ant-Man, Iron Man 3, and Doctor Strange attest to the benefits of the old Hollywood-style studio system that Marvel has resurrected: Under the umbrella of structure and quota is security, which can bequeath qualified freedom. On the occasion of the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, here’s a ranking of every film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to date. Chuck Bowen

Aude Hesbert, presently director of the French cultural agency Villa Albertine in Los Angeles, will take over as both artistic director of the Deauville American Film Festival and managing director of cinema communications and events outfit Le Public Système Cinema.
The move comes after Le Public Systeme’s longtime leader and Deauville artistic director Bruno Barde was ousted from his position following accusations of sexual misconduct by seven former female employees.
Hesbert will also head up the crime thriller festival Reims Polar and Gérardmer International Fantasy Film Festival, which are run by Le Public Systeme, parent company Hopscotch has confirmed.

[This story contains spoilers for Twisters.]
Twisters audiences are getting swept up in the renewed debate surrounding depictions of sexual intimacy on the big screen. Social media users have been in a tizzy over the ending of director Lee Isaac Chung’s action film that stars Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos.
A follow-up to the 1996 film Twister that starred Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, the new movie centers on Kate (Edgar-Jones) aiming to put a tragic tornado encounter behind her as she returns to Oklahoma to assist a team in tracking dangerous storms. Twisters shows her slow-building connection to YouTube-famous storm chaser Tyler (Powell) — but you might be blown away to learn that the pair never express their affections with an onscreen kiss.
“My partner immediately lamented the fact that their romance was never physicalized in any way, and that they even avoided the hunky hero ever taking his shirt off,” says John Bucher,...

Some people might argue that Sharon Stone’s infamous leg-crossing scene in Basic Instinct made her not only famous but also an instant symbol in cinema’s pop culture history. However, for the actress in question, the uncertainty of the scene combined with the humiliation of not knowing what she was getting into was not exactly a career highlight for her.

Despite Basic Instinct’s instant and ubiquitous success, the drama that unfolded behind and in front of the scenes was enough to compile into a whole other documentary. For Sharon Stone, however, the trauma from her career’s biggest and her personal breakout film left a lifelong impression on her mental health and emotional well-being.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always been a dominant force in the film industry, and that was the case until a few years ago. While it might have been struggling to captivate audiences lately (although the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine seems more than promising), MCU entries are generally expected to rake millions at the global box office.
Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow | Marvel Studios
While the cause of its recent deflated performance might or might not be its own doing, experts believe Disney is solely to blame when it comes to one underperforming film: Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow. And it seems the actress might be right after all in her criticism of Kevin Feige and the MCU leadership.

As this morning’s Emmy nominations prove, there may be less TV being made nowadays, but the quality certainly hasn’t declined with the quantity.
As widely expected, The Bear, Baby Reindeer, True Detective: Night Country and Shōgun were mentioned more than once by past Emmy winners Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale on Wednesday morning. As Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego said, “it was an exceptional year in television.” It certainly seemed exceptional that, for the first time in a long while, the names Succession and Ted Lasso were not heard when the nominations were read, as those multiple winners have wrapped up their runs.

Donald Trump literally dodged a bullet Saturday but the attempt on his life has already had unintended consequences both profoundly tragic and deeply ironic. Along with leaving one of Trump’s rally-goers dead and injuring two others, the failed assassination attempt appears to have mortally wounded the dump Joe Biden movement, at least as far as some Hollywood donors are concerned.
“We missed the window and there’s no appetite right now for any big moves that will throw more uncertainty and friction into this race,” a well-placed agency executive told Hot Source the day after the shooting. “I think the consensus among donors is that we just go with what we have and make our case and hope for a miracle.”
Over the last few weeks, since Biden’s 90-minute senior moment at his debate with Donald Trump, a wide swath of Hollywood A-listers publicly called on him to step out of the race.

“I’d have to be pretty stupid to write a book about killing and then kill him the way I described in my book. I’d be announcing myself as the killer. I’m not stupid.”
We all know that woman. She’s got impossibly perfect hair, effortless style, and a glint in her eye signaling ultimate control – not to mention throngs of handsome men wrapped around her perfectly manicured fingers. We call her a man-eater for her ability to dominate any patriarchal exchange and command men to act on her every whim and desire. Weather weaponizing tears or sexuality, there’s something so admirable about a woman who gives no fucks. So confident that she will come out on top, she’s ascended beyond the fear of being disliked and uses her destabilizing confidence to play with men used to being in charge. Paul Verhoeven’s neo-noir outing with Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas headlining the film was perhaps one of the most polarizing pieces of cinema of its time (and perhaps even today) which sundered the audience into opposing factions.

Recently, the actor, Michael Douglas appeared on The View to discuss his upcoming documentary. But the table of hosts wasn’t prepared for his revealing marriage “secret.” During the shocking comment, the hosts take a minute to collect themselves after being rendered speechless by his response.
The View Is Back
While The View fans missed the hosts while they were taking some time away, they are back and jumping straight into the hot new topics this week. The co-hosts, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, and Alyssa Farah Griffin return this week after celebrating America with a little summer break. Although they were in a groove by Thursday, July 11, they weren’t ready for what Michael Douglas was dishing. Undeniably, the award-winning actors, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones exchanged vows on November 18, 2000. While it wasn’t always smooth sailing, they have figured out some secrets to a happy marriage.

Exclusive: Actor-producer Matthew Modine and Adam Rackoff’s Cinco Dedos Peliculas production company have signed on as executive producers of I Hope This Helps!, a documentary that explores the promise and peril of artificial intelligence.
Writer-director Daniel Freed enlisted Google’s AI chatbot Bard to help create the documentary, described as a “humorous, genre-bending hybrid film” that invites viewers to ponder “the evolving relationship between humanity and technology.”
Responding to prompts from the filmmaker, Google’s Bard fashioned a furry blue creature with big eyes to (one imagines) lessen the menacing specter of AI.
‘Stranger Things’ star Matthew Modine attends an event in London for ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ on December 14, 2023.
“Artificial intelligence is the most important, life-altering technological advancement in modern human history. Full stop,” Modine said in a statement. As a SAG-AFTRA board member, Modine was deeply engaged in the contentious contract talks last year between the...

Who had a “media feud between Joe Biden and George Clooney” on their July 2024 bingo card?
But that’s exactly what recent events have given us.
President Biden’s team reportedly clapped back at the iconic actor on Wednesday after Clooney’s scathing New York Times guest essay that pushed for the president to step down from his reelection campaign in the wake of serious widespread concerns about his mental fitness.
A Times congressional correspondent, Annie Karni, wrote on X that “Biden is fighting back on Clooney” and cited “a source familiar with event planning” as mocking the actor for his level of participation at a June 15 fundraiser that Clooney referenced in his op-ed.
“The President stayed for over three hours, while Clooney took a photo quickly and left,” the source said.

Actor Michael Douglas, a longtime supporter of Joe Biden who hosted a Hollywood fundraiser for the president in April, said on The View today that he is “deeply, deeply concerned” about Biden’s prospects in light of the recent debate.
Asked to comment on George Clooney’s New York Times op-ed calling for Biden to step aside, Douglas said, “I think it’s a valid point. I’m deeply, deeply concerned. I mean, especially it’s difficult because the Democrats have a big bench, they’ve got a lot of heavy hitters, a lot of talent. And I do worry because with the debate…I mean, it was relatively simple: First of all, they should have just told the president to stand up, put a little make up on for the debate and then where to look, and just don’t deal with all of your facts – just deal with [Trump’s] lies.

On Wednesday, The New York Times op-ed section published a blunt essay from George Clooney, in which the actor and director, one of Hollywood’s more engaged political players, forcefully argues for President Joe Biden to step aside in his campaign for reelection and allow a new candidate to take on Donald Trump in November.
Clooney, who has starred in and directed several politically minded films over his career, did not mince words in the essay, writing that the Biden he spent time with at a recent fundraiser that the Hollywood A-lister co-hosted three weeks ago is not the same man who won in 2020, but is the one 51 million Americans saw with their own eyes at his disastrous debate performance on June 27.
“Was he tired? Yes. A cold? Maybe,” Clooney wrote of the debate performance that has sent Democrats into a panic and that is now dividing the party. “But...

France’s Deauville American Film Festival has announced a retrospective gathering 50 U.S. features that have challenged perceptions of the world to mark its 50th anniversary.
The selection ranges from D. W. Griffith’s 1916 silent epic Intolerance to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and also includes Ida Lupino’s groundbreaking 1950 rape drama Outrage as well as Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. (see full list below)
“Cinema has always made us dream, travel, desire, fantasize, laugh, cry. But how many films have been able to shake up our certainties, question our beliefs, question our prejudices and put our own views into perspective?,” said the festival.
“The Deauville American Film Festival wanted to highlight a selection of 50 films that have changed the way we look at the world,” it continued.

Actor Dennis Quaid co-starred alongside Cousin Skeeter star Meagan Good in the 2019 horror thriller The Intruder. Given how intense and intimate the movie was, Good asserted that scenes could be a bit extreme between herself and her onscreen partner — so much so that she joked that she needed to establish a safe word.

The Intruder was a callback to older thrillers. Good starred in the 2019 feature alongside Michael Ealy as a young couple being stalked and harassed by their house’s previous homeowner. Good had already worked with Ealy before. But Intruder marked the first time the actor teamed up with Dennis Quaid, whom she was a huge fan of growing up.
“With Dennis, it’s something a little different because I grew up watching him, and he’s absolutely incredible,” Good once told Brief Take.

There was nothing going on in terms of American or international politics over the last few weeks that late-night would have gotten its teeth into, right?

Will they find time to discuss the state of the U.S. Presidential Election, President Biden’s debate performance and the subsequent calls for him to exit the race and former President Trump’s own debate performance, his ties to Project 2025 and his search for a Vice President?

The episode of "The Simpsons" called "Homer's Enemy" is one of the most memorable — and darkest — episodes of the series. It features a new character named Frank Grimes (Hank Azaria), recently hired at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Grimes is stern, serious, intelligent, and worked his way into a well-paying nuclear power gig after struggling out of childhood poverty. He has an unshakeable work ethic, and a deep concern for safety. Naturally, when he meets a feckless, incompetent boob like Homer Simpson (Dan Castellaneta), Grimes instantly becomes incensed. How can this fool, Grimes felt, have a successful job and a loving family, even when he is obviously incompetent to a life-threatening degree?
Homer's incompetence even gets Grimes in trouble. When Homer almost drinks a glass of sulfuric acid, Grimes slaps it out of his hand, accidentally dissolving part of a nearby wall. Grimes receives a pay cut for destroying the wall.

Fans of The View historically hate it when the show is on hiatus and shows reruns, especially during an election year.
With many vital issues happening daily in America, The View fans want to see what Whoopi Goldberg or Sara Haines will say about them.
The View went on hiatus without warning, and fans got upset, as Monsters and Critics reported. The consensus is that The View should give better warning when they air repeat episodes.
Exciting news is ahead for fans of The View who had to watch previously recorded episodes of outdated news for the week.
The View shared an Independence Day post with fans asking again when the show would return from vacation in the comments.

Even Hollywood’s biggest stars may sometimes need to get away from Tinseltown and all that talk about box office declines, streaming challenges, and the threats of TikTok and generative AI.
No surprise then that the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) has found passionate fans among the A-list with its offering of summer refreshment, like a cocktail of positivity away from all the negativity.
In fact, Kviff has over the years often turned out not to only be a film fest, but also a big love fest for famous faces.

The View Needs A Break In The Aftermath Of The Presidential Debate
Although The View is popular for its open discussion on hot topics, fans are noticing this week is kicking off with old “hot topics” as the show continues with reruns. Undeniably, the table is most likely still in an uproar over the aftermath of watching the latest presidential debates between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. While Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro, and Alyssa Farah Griffin were in shock, they held a post-debate discussion.

Who will the American Film Institute select as its 50th life achievement award recipient? Which top director is the most likely choice to be honored in 2025? After reviewing the possible choices, be sure to vote in our poll below as to who you think should be the best selection. We will host two more separate polls about your favorite choices for actresses and actors soon.

Let’s salute the 15 greatest depictions of fictional commanders in chief, ranked from worst to best, that have appeared both on TV series and in movies. Known sometimes by the name of Potus (President of the United States), we’ve got a large variety chosen for our photo gallery.
Two of the top characters featured are both from the mind of Oscar and Emmy winner Aaron Sorkin. He wrote the Rob Reiner film “The American President” starring Michael Douglas in the title role and Annette Bening as a potential romance. Not long after, he was one of the creators of “The West Wing,” which starred Martin Sheen as President Jed Bartlet and his dedicated staff, played by Emmy winners Allison Janney, John Spencer, Richard Schiff and Bradley Whitford, plus Emmy champ Stockard Channing as his wife.

It's that time again! Time to say goodbye to a bunch of great movies and TV shows that are leaving Netflix. Summer has just started, and June is drawing to a close to make room for warm July. A new month always brings new titles to Netflix, but it also means several other titles will be departing — that's the nature of streaming. It's a fleeting thing; deals only last so long, and then it's time to say goodbye. So let's take a look at some of the best movies leaving Netflix in July, shall we? Act quickly, because soon, these titles will be gone, and who knows where they might end up next? Maybe nowhere!

Viggo Mortenson, as well as jury members Geoffrey Rush and independent film veteran Christine Vachon were among the big names strutting down the red carpet on Friday evening for the gala opening ceremony of the 58th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) in the Czech Republic.
The black-tie opening event saw Mortensen collect the Kviff President’s Award in the Czech spa town that will for the next week present what has come to be considered Central Europe’s biggest cinema celebration of the summer.
Mortensen, whose feminist western The Dead Don’t Hurt opened the fest later that night, charmed the fest audience with some prepared Czech remarks that drew much applause and appreciation. He then switched to English, calling Kviff a “very important celebration of cinema that you have every year,” making him feel honored that the fest was recognizing “my work as a storyteller.”

Michael Douglas will be guest of honor at the 50th Deauville American Film Festival. It will be the actor’s fifth trip to the fall festival unfolding in the swanky northern French beach resort. The organisers suggested Douglas has a special connection with the festival as the place where he met now wife Catherine Zeta Jones. “Everyone says that the Deauville Festival is special, but few people say like me that it changed their lives,” the announcement release quoted him as saying. The actor was last at the festival in 2013 with My Life with Liberace. His late father Kirk Douglas was also an honorary guest at Deauville and was feted with a posthumous retrospective in 2020. ‘Millions’ Making Millions
The family drama “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” has become the highest-grossing Thai film of all time in The Philippines, distributor Westec Media claims.
The company, which released the film, does not quantify the receipts or the record. But there is little doubt of the film’s hit status across Asia. It has garnered THB1 billion (approximately $27 million) and achieved 10 million admissions, according to producer GDH559.
In Indonesia, where the film was released on May 15, it attracted 3.5 million admissions and became the highest grossing (non-local) Asian film in the country’s box office history. In Myanmar, following its release on May 31, has also become the highest-grossing Thai film ever recorded. It stands as the highest-grossing Thai film in Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam.
The heartwarming story follows a teenage university dropout (Putthipong “Billkin” Assaratanakul), who quits his job to care for his ailing grandmother (Usha Seamkhum) to secure a large inheritance.

Exclusive: Fresh off of Netflix’s noisy Indian series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, Taha Shah Badussha has set his sights on Hollywood — and he has a specific, seismic role in mind.
“Let’s put it out there, I want to be the first Indian James Bond. Why not?” he tells Deadline in an interview. With the iconic role still wide open as Bond‘s producers continue to sketch out the post-Daniel Craig era, there’s no harm in harboring the ambition.
Currently managed by Steven Adams’ Alta Global Media and hunting for representation in the UK and U.S., Shah has eyes for Tinseltown, where he hopes his reps can help land him the “meaty, acting-oriented roles” he wants, as opposed to the “comedian” parts that Indian-origin actors have often been given in the past.

One word is on the lips of every broker in NYC, and they’ve all got an opinion.
“The elections always bring uncertainty into the equation,” says Douglas Elliman star Fredrik Eklund. Agrees fellow Elliman broker Steven Cohen, “The real estate market is averse to volatility and historically slows down as we approach the elections.
“I think activity will remain low until at least later this year, after the election,” concurs Nobel Black, also of Elliman. But says Compass’ Matt Breitenbach, “The Hamptons real estate market will be fine despite macroeconomic pressure and presidential elections.”
But no matter what’s in the crystal ball for the remainder of 2024, one thing is clear: New York’s power sellers again made their marks over the past year. Despite high interest rates, inflation and competition with South Florida, Manhattan continued to see jaw-dropping sales at buildings the Central Park Tower, where Elliman’s...

Peyton Reed's 2018 film "Ant-Man and the Wasp" was released in the wake of "Avengers: Infinity War," one of the major team-up movies that occasionally punctuates the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "Wasp" served, some have said, as a palate cleanser after the major, widely-seen event film, trying to keep the McU's mood light. This ethos was also employed with Reed's original "Ant-Man" from 2015, which followed "Avengers: Age of Ultron."
"Wasp" took place concurrently with the events of "Infinity War" and was a brisk, comedic heist movie featuring a very human villain played by Walton Goggins. Ant-Man, aka Scott Lang, (Paul Rudd) was under house arrest, which explains why he wasn't present for the big Thanos fight in "Infinity War." The Wasp, aka Hope van Dyne (née Pym), (Evangeline Lilly) and her father Hank (Michael Douglas) have, meanwhile, built a massive, high-tech shrinking tunnel which will serve as an entrance to the Quantum Realm,...

Being recognized as the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock left a remarkable legacy that still influences filmmakers for their thrillers and horrors. It’s no surprise Vertigo (1958), Psycho (1960) and The Birds (1963) are great sources of cinema inspiration.
However, there is a lesser-known gem made by Hitchcock that became the base for a star-studded crime flick that is still rewatched by those who miss the atmosphere of 90s thrillers. Let’s take a closer look at this underdog take on the genre classics.
The plot of this film revolves around Steven Taylor, a Wall Street dealer whose both empire and marriage are close to being ruined. The point is that he finds out not only that his wealthy young wife Emily is cheating on him, but also a pretty wild way out of it.

Billy Ray called him “a prince.” Kiefer Sutherland said his dad was “never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly.” Horror filmmaker Joe Russo simply wrote, “Rip to the Goat.”
Hollywood is sounding off on the death of Donald Sutherland, the 2017 recipient of an Honorary Oscar who died Thursday in Miami at 88. Stars such as Michael Douglass and Rachel Zegler have responded to the news as well.
Sutherland played key parts in films like Ordinary People (1980), Pride & Prejudice (2005) and The Hunger Games quartet of films based on the books by Suzanne Collins. He was also a staple of Robert Altman’s Mash in the role of Hawkeye Pierce.
“I never had the honor of knowing him personally, but it was the honor of a lifetime to follow in his footsteps,” Tom Blyth, who portrayed a younger version of Sutherland’s Hunger Games character in a prequel film, wrote on Instagram.

Free The Children is a children’s charity organization founded in 1995 by children’s rights advocate Craig Kielburger, who was only 12-years-old at the time. The organization builds schools in developing countries. It also provides alternative income projects as well as school and health kits to people in developing rural areas. Free The Children was inspired by the death of Iqbal Masih, a twelve year old carpet factory laborer who spoke out against his working conditions and received help from the Bonded Labour Liberation Front of Pakistan. The organization has partnered with the United Nations, Me to We Style, National Bank Financial, and Oprah's Angel Network.

Wherever I go, when I tell people that I work as an editor for Gold Derby, they never fail to bring up their latest binge-fest and how obsessed they were with it. “Ripley” occupied that space for several weeks, replaced by “Baby Reindeer,” then “Fellow Travelers.” Before that, I ran into a bunch of “Lessons in Chemistry” fans, and friends who were absolutely obsessed with “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.” “Fargo: Season 5” and “True Detective: Night Country” also had, and continue to have, legions of followers. And of course, “Shogun” consumed people for a good long while.
The point is that Best Limited Series has grown the past few years into the hottest and most prestigious Emmy category, and that’s especially true in 2024 with the depletion of the Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series due to the 2023 strikes and the departure of shows like “Succession” and “Ted Lasso.
