Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Steve Martin is entering the “Only Murders in the Building” episode titled “Sitzprobe” as his 2024 Emmy Award submission for Best Comedy Actor. “Sitzprobe” streamed on September 19, 2023 and is the eighth episode of the Hulu show’s third season.
In this installment, Martin’s character Charles-Haden Savage joins the rest of the play’s cast and crew for a complete run-through, and he is finally able to perform the tongue-twisting song “Which Of The Pickwick Triplets Did It?” in its entirety. Later, Charles and Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) secretly record the interrogations conducted by Detective Donna Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) in order to learn more about who killed Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd).

The hit Hulu series Only Murders In The Building Season 4 promises to be star-studded. The mystery series starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez are back as podcaster-sleuths Charles, Oliver, and Mabel. However, a Grey’s star will not be returning.
Who is not coming back for the “starriest” season ever?

On Monday, Jesse Williams spoke to People about whether he would be back for Only Murders In The Building Season 4. His surprising answer was, “No, I’m not on that show anymore.” Why was this surprising?
Season 3 of the Hulu series had several major guest stars including Meryl Streep as Loretta Durkin, and Paul Rudd, who portrayed Ben Glenroy. Jesse Williams portrayed Tobert. Ben hired Tobert to film him in his Broadway debut in the musical Death Rattle.

Four-time Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel has passed on the chance to join the Academy’s five-timers club, according to Puck.
In March this year, the 96th Academy Awards ceremony shocked basically everybody watching when it went off without a hitch.
A particularly optimistic-looking year for Hollywood probably helped. The blockbuster phenomena of Barbie and Oppenheimer meant the ceremony had none of the “nobody’s seen these films anyway” feel which has dogged the awards since 2019, and gave those involved the confidence more-or-less required of the Hollywood mythos.
No shortage of credit has to go, though, to the man brought in to steer a still very leaky-looking ship on the night. After parachuting in to (hopefully) minimize the chance of on-stage violence as seen in the 95th ceremony the year before, Jimmy Kimmel’s return made it look like the Academy might finally have found a safe pair of hands willing...

In a sudden change of plans, Jesse Williams revealed he will not reprise his role as documentarian Tobert in the fourth season of the hit Hulu comedy “Only Murders in the Building.” The former “Grey’s Anatomy” star made the unexpected announcement during a recent People magazine interview for his new Discovery+ docuseries “Distilled.”
“No, I’m not on that show anymore,” Williams stated when asked directly about returning. His departure comes as a surprise given the open-ended conclusion of his Season 3 storyline, which saw Tobert relocate to Los Angeles to work on an independent film project.
Williams joined the critically acclaimed mystery series in its third season as the love interest of Selena Gomez’s character Mabel. His character brought a fresh energy to the dynamic between Mabel, Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short) as they continued solving murders around their Upper West Side building.

While it’s obviously exciting for comedy fans to encounter the legendary Steve Martin out in the world, it’s assuredly less exciting for Steve Martin himself.
After five decades in show business, the guy’s probably pretty sick of taking selfies, fielding questions about Three Amigos and being pestered to autograph everybody’s DVD copies of Shopgirl.
In fact, at one point in his career, Martin was so wildly (and crazily) popular that he came up with a unique process to circumvent the autograph-giving process entirely. Martin printed a bunch of “signed” business cards to hand out to fans who stopped him on the street. Each card read: “This certifies that you have had a personal encounter with me and that you found me warm, polite, intelligent and funny.”
A similar strategy was later employed by Thomas F. Wilson, the actor who played Biff in the Back to the Future movies.

This article contains extremely light spoilers for "Deadpool & Wolverine."
Like any human being with good taste, Ryan Reynolds loves John Candy. The star of the "Deadpool" movies has shared his appreciation for the late actor/comedian, who died at age 43 in 1994, multiple times on social media over the years, including when he shared this touching video tribute to Candy:
(I'd never seen that before, and was on the verge of tears when I watched it this morning.)
In 2020, Reynolds wrote on Instagram, "John Candy passed away 26 years ago today. He always walked that tightrope between hilarious and heartbreaking. His movies mean so much to me. If you haven't seen his work, check it out. He's absolutely beautiful." In 2023, word came out that he's even producing a documentary about Candy that's being directed by Colin Hanks. And as recently as last month, Reynolds randomly shared a meme about Candy in his Instagram stories.

Twenty years ago, music editor Micha Liberman won an Emmy Award as part of the sound editing team for the “Deadwood” pilot. Years later, Liberman was again nominated for “Deadwood: The Movie.” But the industry veteran says his double 2024 nominations for “Only Murders in the Building” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender” are “unbelievable,” in part because the pair of nominations better encapsulate Liberman’s long and diverse career.
“If someone spent 17 years working on the same television show and had five nominations from that television show that would make sense – it would be a fair, accurate representation of their career,” Liberman says to Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “But it always felt a little misrepresentative of me to have nominations two decades apart from the same franchise. So now that I have the ‘Only Murders’ nomination, which is for a half-hour comedy, that’s completely different from ‘Deadwood.

As Martin Short says in the recently released Only Murders in the Building Season 4 trailer, “somewhere lay a sniper’s nest,” and the identity of that sniper will prove even more difficult to discover in the latest installment of Hulu’s murder mystery series, which has expanded its star-studded cast quite a bit.
The teaser trailer, plot summary and a new photo reveal the purpose behind the addition of some of the stars, because, in Oliver’s words they’re “goin to the movies.” The “starriest season yet” will arrive this summer on Hulu, bringing back the original trio of sleuths as well as other characters who have been a part of their Arconia drama since the beginning.

Hulu and Disney+ have released the key art for Only Murders in the Building Season 4. The artwork teases the Hollywood storyline while celebrating the guest stars set for the season.
The series, starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, returns on August 27 on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally.
In Season 4, the amateur podcasting trio picks up where Season 3 left off in the aftermath of the event between Charles’ stunt double & friend Sazz Pataki. Questioning whether she or Charles was the intended victim, their investigation leads them all the way to Los Angeles where a Hollywood studio is readying a film about the Only Murders podcast.
As Charles, Oliver & Mabel race back to New York, they embark on an even more epic journey — traversing their building’s courtyard to delve into the twisted lives of the Arconia’s West Tower residents.

Shawn Levy has long chafed at the labels Hollywood has placed upon him.
That helps explain the evolution of the Montreal-born filmmaker from go-to family comedy guy (Night at the Museum and Cheaper by the Dozen) to the producer of cerebral Oscar winners (Arrival) and cultural behemoths (Stranger Things).
After a string of successes in the aughts, Levy branched out with the 2011 Amblin-esque feature Real Steel, which earned nearly $300 million globally and showed he could bring his trademark emotionality to the action sphere. It also teamed him with Hugh Jackman, who, like others who have worked with the producer-director, says he creates an empathetic environment on set. “There isn’t one scene that necessarily was ‘the moment we clicked,’ ” Jackman recalls. “It was more a feeling on Real Steel that it made me know this was going to be a lifelong friendship.”

If you’re like me, you spend a lot of August yelling “Summer is over!” to your nearest and dearest — and they don’t take kindly to that. Summer TV is in its twilight, while fall premieres loom on the horizon after the Emmy Awards on September 15.
But summer is not over, and there’s plenty of new titles to stream in the Disney bundle. Disney+ will premiere new Star Wars and “Winnie the Pooh” titles for kids, as well as the original series “Are You Sure?!” following BTS’s Jimin and Jung Kook. Hulu will become home to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” “The Woman King,” “Smile,” and more movie titles, as well as the home for FX series — this month: “The New York Times Presents: Lie to Fly: Documentary Premiere.” Hulu originals “Solar Opposites” returns on August 12, and “Reasonable Doubt” for its second season starting August...

The 2024 Emmy nominations made waves this week, with The Bear breaking records alongside Carol Burnett, Nava Mau, Steve Martin and more.
This year, FX’s The Bear broke the record for the most nominations for a comedy series, earning 23 nods for the show’s second season. The milestone comes after the series set the record at last year’s ceremony (held in January due to strike delays) for the most awards won by a debut season, at 10.
The show’s network, FX, also had reason to celebrate this week, setting a record for itself with 93 nominations.
Elsewhere on the awards docket, many celebrated their first-ever nomination, including The Bear’s Liza Colón-Zayas and others broke their own records, while more set new ones.
The 2024 Emmys will be broadcast live on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt on ABC. Click here for the complete list of nominees.

In spite of the Walt Disney Company’s obvious embarrassment, Disneyland celebrated its 69th anniversary earlier this week. And while the park has obviously had a big impact on generations of happy children/exhausted adults, it’s also worth noting that it helped to shape the career of one of the most famous comic performers alive today: Steve Martin.
Famously, Martin spent weekends and summers working at Disneyland as a kid, beginning at the age of 10, because, as the comedian later speculated, “I don’t think there were any child labor laws then.”
In addition to catching the act that later inspired Three Amigos!, Martin was also influenced by the park’s resident comedian, Wally Boag, who performed a Western-themed routine as part of the “Golden Horseshoe Revue” in Frontierland’s faux saloon.

Movies always go through a number of changes between an idea in the shower to streaming from your couch, whether minor (your protagonist now wears leather jackets instead of tweed suits) to major (he’s also a wild stunt man instead of a quiet professor). It’s not uncommon, for example, to lighten up some dark source material for a broader audience, so you know when the opposite occurs — a comedy becomes a heavy drama or high-stakes thriller — some choices were made.

Eva Longoria is giving Only Murders in the Building fans a tease of what they can expect from her character in the upcoming fourth season.
The Desperate Housewives alum recently talked with IndieWire about her role on the hit mystery comedy-drama, which sees her playing herself.
“It was announced I was on the show, and [friends] were like, ‘Who? What character are you playing? Are you the murderer?’” she said. “And I was like, ‘No. But I will tell you, it’s the best character I’ve ever played in my life: It’s me!’”
The new installment of the series starring Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez has the trio heading to Los Angeles when they learn a Hollywood studio wants to turn their podcast into a movie. At the same time, the podcasters and amateur detectives dive into the mystery surrounding Charles’ (Martin) stunt double Sazz’s death.

Bob Newhart, the genteel but sharply satirical comic whose TV series “The Bob Newhart Show” and “Newhart” were huge hits throughout the 1970s and ’80s, died Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 94.
Newhart’s publicist Jerry Digney said he died after a series of short illnesses.
Newhart was also known to younger audiences as Papa Elf in the 2003 Christmas classic “Elf,” his guest spots on “The Big Bang Theory” and most recently appeared in three episodes of “Young Sheldon.”
“The Big Bang Theory” creator Chuck Lorre remembered Newhart, saying in a statement, “For years I begged Bob to appear on one of my shows. He always said no. It’s not unusual for an actor to receive nine Emmy nominations throughout their careers. This year alone, stars like Jennifer Aniston, Hank Azaria, Christine Baranski, Alex Borstein, Sterling K. Brown, Carol Burnett, Larry David, Donald Glover, Jon Hamm, Steve Martin, Bob Odenkirk, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short, Jean Smart, Holland Taylor and Kristen Wiig all hit nine or more career Emmy bids. However, Sarah Paulson stands alone in that all nine of her nominations came for nine different projects.
This year, Paulson is up for her guest stint on Prime Video’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” in which she plays an unnamed “Therapist” in the episode titled “Couples Therapy (Naked & Afraid).” She treats married spies John Smith (Donald Glover) and Jane Smith (Maya Erskine) at her luxurious home, and she gets into a bit of trouble when she reveals she’s been recording their therapy sessions.

The fact that the 76th annual Emmy Awards nominations, unveiled July 17, were spread far and wide among Disney’s television units was the most significant achievement on a day that brought a lot of good news for the divisions under the purview of Disney Entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden.

A total of 36 individuals earned their first Primetime Emmy acting nominations in 2024, including “Feud” stars Naomi Watts and Tom Hollander and recent Oscar also-rans Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Ryan Gosling (“Saturday Night Live”). A standout among these newbies is Paul Rudd, who is the only one in the group with shots at two performance wins: Best Comedy Supporting Actor (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Best Narrator (“Secrets of the Octopus”).
Rudd could now make Emmys history as the eighth doubly-nominated first-timer to triumph on at least one of his bids. The first to do so was Robert Cummings, who simultaneously won for “12 Angry Men” and lost for “My Hero” in 1955. He was followed by Jack Albertson, Eileen Brennan, Jane Lynch, Riz Ahmed, Ann Dowd, and Ali Wong.
Twenty-six acting Emmy newcomers (13 male and 13 female) preceded Rudd in being concurrently nominated for more than one performance. Aside from Ahmed,...

Awards season may well be over on the film front for another year, but on the TV front, the race for golden statue glory is far from over. Earlier today at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, the nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced in a live ceremony fronted by Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph alongside Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. And leading the pack on the nominations front this time around? That'd be feudal Japanese epic Shōgun which, after a dramatic pivot from Limited Series to Drama after news of the series' surprise renewal, has bagged 25 nominations, including nods for stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai as well as shouts for Outstanding Drama, Writing, Direction, and much more besides.

The nominees were revealed by esteemed actors Sheryl Lee Ralph of Abbott Elementary and Tony Hale of Arrested Development.

In the drama category, the highly anticipated Shōgun series earned an impressive 25 nominations, which included recognition for its talented ensemble cast, such as Anna Sawai, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira and Néstor Carbonell.

Jane Lynch earned her 14th Primetime Emmy Award nomination this morning for her work on NBC’s The Weakest Link under the “Outstanding Game Show Host” category.
The series revival is an adaptation of the British TV series of the same name hosted by Anne Robinson— a personality whose approach Lynch admired—premiered in 2020 with Lynch at the helm. The second half of Season 3 aired earlier this year.
In conversation with Deadline earlier today, Lynch tipped her hat to The Weakest Link writers for their important role in helping her be the host with the most.

Congratulations, I guess, to The Bear, which just set a record for most Emmy nominations by a comedy series with a gut-busting 23 nods. Only one problem, as has been pointed out by every entertainment outlet on the Internet — anxiety-inducing, scream-filled, angst-ridden The Bear isn’t a comedy! Recognize its excellence elsewhere and give some deserved kudos to actual comedies that deserved a shot, like…
Girls5eva. A worthy successor to fizzy sitcoms like 30 Rock and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the never-nominated Girls5eva deserves some credit for actually making us laugh. Variety applauded its revival, both for its “joke-dense satire of cultural misogyny” and its “resonant tale of later-in-life reinvention.”
Gen V. The Boys spin-off is currently rocking a 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, “a sharp, snarky commentary on the billion-dollar business of hero worship,” says the L.A. Times’ Lorraine Ali. “And yes, it’s just as irreverent and crass as its fearless predecessor.

This year’s Emmy nominations presented an opportunity for voters, freed from the velvet shackles of Succession and Ted Lasso and Better Call Saul and Barry and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, among other legacy juggernauts.
Other than a very few returning favorites — Abbott Elementary, Only Murders in the Building, The Crown, The Bear — there were enough vacated slots for the Academy to reshape the field in whatever image they desired.
Announced on Wednesday (July 17) morning, then, the nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards represented a fairly predictable mixed bag: A few long-term wrongs were righted, some ongoing slights were maintained and the pervasive chaos of the Emmys categorization system rewarded some questionable classification choices and punished others.
Let’s start from a place of positivity.
Reservation Dogs led my Top 10 lists each of the past two years and, over its three seasons, cemented a place as one of the very best shows ever made.

Update, with statement: A lot was riding on Steve Martin’s near-superhuman ability to spit out an error-free tongue-twisting patter song at crucial moments of the Broadway-themed season of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. Martin did it flawlessly, but the stakes aren’t over yet: The song, “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?,” has just been Emmy nominated for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics — and a win finally would crown songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul with the Egot laurel.
You can watch Martin perform the song in the Season 3 episode below.
A second pair of songwriters credited on the song, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have plenty of Tonys and Grammys but not the necessary Oscar that would put them into Emmy’s Egot race.

The 76th Primetime Emmy nominations were announced on Wednesday morning, July 17, by Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph. It was a year of tremendous turnover with academy favorites like “Succession” and “Ted Lasso” going off the air and other programs like “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us” going on hiatus. That opened the door for new and returning shows to achieve historic windfalls.
SEE2024 Emmy nominations: Complete list
“The Bear” sets new record — With 23 nominations, “The Bear” is now the comedy series with the most nominations in a single year. The previous record holder was “30 Rock,” which was nominated 22 times in 2009. What’s especially impressive about the show’s total is that it could have done even better. It didn’t max out its potential in acting categories, for instance, missing potential supporting acting bids for Abby Elliott and Oliver Platt. Perhaps season three will...

The nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards that were revealed on Wednesday morning confirm that there is tremendous support from the TV Academy’s 22,000 members for the three shows that have long been presumed to be the frontrunners in their respective categories: FX’s drama series Shogun (which landed a field-leading 25 noms), FX’s comedy series The Bear (the runner-up with 23 noms, a new record for a comedy, or at least a show that could get away with being classified as one) and Netflix’s limited series Baby Reindeer (11 noms).
But — and this is a big but — the noms also suggest that pundits, including me, may have been overestimating the strength of that trio of shows and underestimating the strength of some of their competitors.
Among dramas, Netflix’s The Crown, for its sixth, final and worst-reviewed season (it’s at just 55 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), was the runner-up with a formidable 18 noms,...

Now that the second batch of Emmy nominees has been announced, many TV watchers may want to play catchup after the double Hollywood strikes delayed the 2023 ceremony to January 2024, and the shows that came out between 2023 and 2024 will now be recognized in the second ceremony this year.

With fewer eligible series — a consequence of both last year’s strikes and of a general post-Peak TV contraction — it seemed unlikely that the Emmys (the second such ceremony this year!) would provide much in the way of surprises.
Perhaps, though, awards-watchers shouldn’t have counted them out.
Wednesday morning’s nominations announcement featured at least one major contender (Emma Stone in “The Curse”) shut out, and included heartening and unexpected recognition for other stars whose names hadn’t been part of the conversation to this point. (Congratulations to Idris Elba and Matt Berry!)
In all, the Emmy nominations depict an industry in rapid transition — relatively few returning series made the cut. But nowhere was the competition more pitched, and the volume of surprise omissions as high, as in the limited series field. (Read the full list of nominees here.)

Shogun leads the pack for the 2024 Emmys nominations, which were unveiled Wednesday morning. FX’s series landed 25 noms, including best drama series, setting several records in the process.
Also among the top nominees are FX’s The Bear (with 23 nominations, a comedy series record), Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building (21), HBO/Max’s True Detective: Night Country (19) and Netflix’s The Crown (18).

The nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced live from Hollywood this morning, and "The Bear" and "Shōgun" appear to be the shows to beat. The two FX on Hulu series earned a stunning 23 and 25 nominations respectively, with "Shōgun" earning several cast members first-time nominations and "The Bear" breaking the Emmys' all-time-record for the most nods in one year in the comedy category. The show –- which, as genre purists will surely point out, is actually a dramedy that often leans towards drama –- beats previous record holder "30 Rock" by one nomination.
Elsewhere on the ballot, it's clear that the absence of HBO juggernaut "Succession" has left a void in the drama category, one that several shows are vying to fill. Period pieces "The Gilded Age" and "The Crown" put up a good showing, while sci-fi shows "Fallout" and "3 Body Problem" also found a spot in the Best Drama Category.
