Days of Our Lives is finally expanding Xander Cook’s family. Viewers are about to meet his much-talked-about estranged mother. And an established actress known for her Hallmark movies will play the role. Keep reading for all the details.
Xander’s Mother Comes To Town
Paul Telfer has played Xander Cook on Days of Our Lives since 2015. Xander is the nephew of Victor Kiriakis (played by the late John Aniston.) His backstory revealed that he grew up in Scotland with his mother, Fiona. However, the character of his mother has remained off-screen until now.
Xander has been at the center of several storylines over the years. The character even spent a stint in prison with baddies Clyde Weston and Orpheus. After years of being involved in schemes with Nicole (Arianne Zucker) and Theresa to name a few, Xander seemingly turned over a new leaf thanks to Sarah Horton (Linsey Godfrey.

Exclusive: Gary Oldman says that that the nine Emmy nominations, including for Outstanding Drama Series, received by the wry spy drama Slow Horses “puts an added boost and a spotlight on the show.”
Slow Horses first trotted onto Apple TV+ in April 2022, gathering audiences as it cantered into second and third seasons. Now it’s galloping into a fourth season launching September 4.
A fifth season is in its final weeks of shooting in London, and there are strong hints of Slow Horses returning for a sixth series that would go before cameras later in the year.
Seasons seven and eight are also at the starting gate, though obviously in very early stages of preparation.
The series’ Oscar-winning star Oldman was recognized in the Lead Actor In A Drama category for his sly turn as shambolic-looking British intelligence officer Jackson Lamb for the third season of the show, which debuted last November.

This year’s Emmy nominations presented an opportunity for voters, freed from the velvet shackles of Succession and Ted Lasso and Better Call Saul and Barry and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, among other legacy juggernauts.
Other than a very few returning favorites — Abbott Elementary, Only Murders in the Building, The Crown, The Bear — there were enough vacated slots for the Academy to reshape the field in whatever image they desired.
Announced on Wednesday (July 17) morning, then, the nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards represented a fairly predictable mixed bag: A few long-term wrongs were righted, some ongoing slights were maintained and the pervasive chaos of the Emmys categorization system rewarded some questionable classification choices and punished others.
Let’s start from a place of positivity.
Reservation Dogs led my Top 10 lists each of the past two years and, over its three seasons, cemented a place as one of the very best shows ever made.

As this morning’s Emmy nominations prove, there may be less TV being made nowadays, but the quality certainly hasn’t declined with the quantity.
As widely expected, The Bear, Baby Reindeer, True Detective: Night Country and Shōgun were mentioned more than once by past Emmy winners Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale on Wednesday morning. As Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego said, “it was an exceptional year in television.” It certainly seemed exceptional that, for the first time in a long while, the names Succession and Ted Lasso were not heard when the nominations were read, as those multiple winners have wrapped up their runs.

Slow Horses has landed itself a seat at the Emmys table, with the series picking up a total of nine nominations. The Apple TV+ series has picked several nominations from other awards since launch in 2022 but not at the Emmys — until now.

Earlier this year, “Succession” garnered a whopping 15 Primetime Emmy nominations: a bid for Best Drama Series and 14 for acting. The HBO show from Jesse Armstrong became not just the most-nominated drama of the year but the most recognized show that year, while the 14 acting bids tied its own record from the previous year.
But how about this year? Does any show have a chance of getting close to the dizzying heights of “Succession?” Well, probably not. But we’ve combed through our odds chart to work out which of the shows in contention for Emmy nominations will garner the most bids. We’re going to go through drama, comedy, and limited series/TV movie separately and here we’ll start with drama. Below, we ranked our predicted Best Drama Series nominees in order of least predicted total nominations to most.

Apple TV+ today unveiled a first look at the upcoming fourth season of its widely acclaimed, BAFTA Award-winning espionage series ‘Slow Horses,’ starring Academy Award winner Gary Oldman.
Adapted from ‘Spook Street,’ the fourth novel in the Cwa Gold Dagger Award-winning Mick Herron spy series ‘Slough House,’ season four will premiere globally on Wednesday, September 4 with the first two episodes, followed by one new episode weekly, every Wednesday through October 2, on Apple TV+.
The series is a darkly humorous espionage drama that follows a dysfunctional team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 known un-affectionately as Slough House. Season four opens with a bombing that detonates personal secrets, rocking the already unstable foundations of Slough House.

The wickedly funny and frequently fast-paced Slow Horses might be the most inaccurately titled series on TV.
Thankfully, viewers have not been turned away by the wry moniker, and Apple TV+'s enthralling espionage drama continues to score renewals.
We've known for a while that Slow Horses Season 4 is on the way, but now we have a premiere date and our first look at Gary Oldman in his latest outing as Jackson Lamb, crotchety spy guy.
Apple announced today that the new season will premiere on September 4, with the first two of six episodes.
After that, new episodes will drop every Wednesday up until the season finale on October 2.

Slow Horses, one of AppleTV+’s most acclaimed shows, is set to return to small screens in September. Details below.
Get ready to return to Slough House again! Season 4 of Slow Horses is set to premiere on 4th September on AppleTV+ with two episodes. Weekly episodes will then follow and the finale will be available on 2nd October.
The series is based on Mick Herron’s Slough House series of novels and is set within a division of the MI5 that houses all the employees who are terrible at their jobs, but haven’t made a mistake big enough to warrant firing them.
Leading the division is Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb, a farting, chain-smoking, utterly brilliant agent. Jack Lowden, Kristin Scott Thomas and Aimee-Ffion Edwards are among the cast returning to their roles for another series.
Joining the already handsome cast are Hugo Weaving, Joanna Scanlan, Ruth Bradley, Tom Brooke and James Callis.

The Apple TV+ drama series “Sugar” has provided a showcase for a number of its stars, with the cast led by Colin Farrell but also including terrific turns from the likes of James Cromwell and Amy Ryan.
The neo-noir detective drama follows Farrell as a private investigator who searches for the missing granddaughter of a Hollywood producer. Created by “Thor” and “I Am Legend” screenwriter Mark Protosevich, the series is an homage-filled thriller that updates and pays dividends to the noir detective genre. Ryan shines in her role as Melanie Matthews, who used to be the step-daughter of the missing Olivia and develops something of a relationship with Farrell’s detective. Ryan, who younger viewers will mostly recognize from her days in “The Office,” demonstrates her impressive versatility as a performer here, as noted by critics.

Peter Dinklage became a force to be reckoned with at the Emmys during his tenure as Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” with the actor winning four wins from eight nominations. The cast of “Game of Thrones” was so good, however, that many of them are still Emmys forces even after the show ended and they’ve moved on to different projects. Let’s take a look at the “Game of Thrones” alumni who could compete at this year’s Emmys.

Olivia Colman is in line for another successful awards season as her guest performance in FX’s “The Bear” looks set to snag her another Emmy nomination. The FX on Hulu show follows Jeremy Allen White as a chef who leaves the world of fine dining behind in order to help run his family’s sandwich shop in Chicago.
The show is packed full of superb guest spots from major names, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Sarah Paulson, Will Poulter, and Bob Odenkirk. But it’s Colman who perhaps has the best guest spot. She plays British executive chef Terry, who works at Ever, the fine dining restaurant where Ebon Moss-Bachrach‘s Richie stages.
Colman features as Terry in episode seven of season two, titled “Forks,” and critics agree that she was a standout.

Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall with its third season and with it comes the show’s best cast to date. Nicole Beharie, Jon Hamm, Tig Notaro, and Stephen Fry all joined the cast while mainstays Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Billy Crudup all turned in their best work yet.
However, it’s the show’s supporting players, who have been here since day one, that makes the series so good. Karen Pittman is a prime example of that. The series depicts the behind-the-scenes drama of a US morning TV show and Pittman plays Mia Jordan, a key producer of said show. Pittman has always been an actress who possesses a powerful screen presence and that is true here, too. She captivates audiences (and the other actors) but also smartly sews vulnerability into a character who has some power in the show.

“It’s the best of both worlds,” declares “Slow Horses” star Jack Lowden. For our recent webchat he adds, “It has this super intrigue and sexiness of the world of espionage that’s never boring to look at, but it also has the workplace element, with a dreadful boss and a terrible working environment that I imagine most people around the world can relate to at some point in their lives. It’s that mashup that’s so fantastic, and that’s actually what Mick Herron, the author of the novel said that he wanted to do a workplace drama thriller,” he explains, adding with a grin that “he chose espionage because nobody knows anything about espionage, so nobody can tell him if he just makes stuff up.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Gary Oldman is having the time of his life with Jackson Lamb.
The third season of AppleTV+’s “Slow Horses” welcomes back Jackson (Oldman) fast asleep on a couch in the waiting room of a doctor’s office. Only his shoes are visible as he lays back, eyes closed, and freely lets out a series of farts. Other patients look on in disgust and are offended by his behavior. One goes up to the receptionist and complains about him. Poking his head up, Jackson says in a wry manner, “It’s my colon, terminal.”
Jackson Lamb is a grumpy old man, who drinks, smokes, dons a filthy raincoat with cigarette burns and stains, needs a shower badly… and farts a lot. He attempts personal hygiene this season by cleaning his underarms in the office restrooms, except there’s no soap around. And Oldman can’t get enough.

You might have to wait a whole hour for Kristin Scott Thomas to appear in the guise of carefree and broke aristocrat Bijou in this breezy mid-life crisis drama set in Greece, but once she arrives everything suddenly falls into place.
Two tickets to Greece, the French title from director Marc Fitoussi (Call My Agent) follows two former school best friends Magalie (Laure Calamy) and Blandine (Olivia Côte) as they reconcile decades after falling out and losing touch with one another. Despite the years, Magalie hasn’t changed one bit and is still the life and soul of any party that will have her. On the other hand, stuck up upper middle class Blandine has forgotten how to have fun.
Newly divorced and still pining for her old married life, Blandine is spurred on by her well-adjusted grown-up son, Benjamin (Alexandre Desrousseaux), to take a trip with Magalie to the...

Even Kristin Scott Thomas can’t save this painful French comedy about two older women heading for the Greek islands for wacky fun
Marc Fitoussi, whose directing credits include work on the French TV hit Call My Agent!, has created this excruciatingly sugary French comedy of female friendship in a vacation paradise. It’s a one-note, one-joke, non-Mamma-Mia! the non-musical, with three lead performances that are borderline insufferable.
Olivia Côte plays Blandine, a straitlaced, sobersided woman whose life is miserable; she’s divorced from a man who is now marrying someone half his age and her 20-year-old son is moving out. But then she reconnects with an old schoolfriend, the wild and irrepressible Magalie (Laure Calamy) who suggests they do something they once dreamed of as kids: visit the Greek island of Amorgos, because it was featured in Luc Besson’s The Big Blue, their favourite film from those days.

Given its warm critical reception and past PGA and SAG Award notices, it makes sense that “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” has maintained a massive lead over its Best TV Movie competitors ever since we opened our 2024 Emmys predictions center. However, because the original “Monk” was never even nominated for Best Comedy Series during its eight-season run, the one-off Peacock continuation can’t exactly be considered a shoo-in. In truth, it faces quite a few strong challengers, including the laugh-packed Netflix offering “Unfrosted.”
Hours before its May 3 premiere, “Unfrosted” rose above its 100/1 Gold Derby odds and pulled ahead of both “Finestkind” and “Genie” to become this year’s seventh most likely TV movie nominee. Its next immediate challenge is passing sixth place runner “Scoop” (also from Netflix), which is currently a predicted nominee among our editors and experts.

The low-budget romcom about Britain’s upper middle classes launched the careers of its writer Richard Curtis and Grant. Cast and crew share their stories – from Liz Hurley in that dress to Amber Rudd’s role as an ‘aristocracy coordinator’
It’s been 30 years since audiences first met Hugh Grant as a stuttering serial monogamist who falls hopelessly in love with a glamorous American (Andie MacDowell) in Four Weddings and a Funeral. The low-budget romcom, directed by Mike Newell and scripted by Richard Curtis, came out of nowhere to become a global hit when it was released in 1994.
Based on Curtis’s own experiences of being a guest at a seemingly endless merry-go-round of weddings, the film follows Grant’s sweary, bumbling Charles and his group of friends – which includes his deaf brother – as they navigate love, loss and grief. From the first “fuck” uttered by Grant as he wakes...

Traditionally, movie theater walkouts are usually associated with the horror genre, with infamous cases ranging from 1973’s The Exorcist (particularly during the crucifix masturbation scene) and even Lars Von Trier’s controversial serial killer memoir, The House That Jack Built.
That being said, there are exceptions to this rule, as some movies manage to terrorize audiences into leaving the theater regardless of genre. One memorable example of this is Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2013 revenge thriller Only God Forgives, a film so brutal and inaccessible that quite a few critics ended up treating it like a snuff film from hell back when it was first released. However, I’ve come to learn that horror fans have a knack for seeing beyond the blood and guts when judging the value of a story, and that’s why I’d like to make a case for Winding’s near-impenetrable experiment as an excellent horror-adjacent experience.

“We had a lot of fun in Istanbul because it was the opening of the season” declares Oscar-nominated cinematographer Danny Cohen (“The King’s Speech”) about the acclaimed third season of the Apple TV+ spy drama “Slow Horses.” It opens in the Turkish city, but then soon finds itself back in the decidedly unglamorous Slough House, the MI5 office reserved for the outcasts and misfits of the British intelligence agency. For our recent webchat he adds with a smile, “you instantly have the idea to sell the audience a complete red herring that they’re going on some sort of ‘James Bond’ travelogue. See the world, travel the globe, beaches, interesting cities, and then to use that as a hook to then drag everybody back to the well-worn interiors of Slough House.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”) being the only 2023 nominee eligible to return puts her in the frontrunner position and leaves the remaining slots open to a bevy of formidable newcomers and past hopefuls.
This year’s supporting actress candidates will not have to fend off reigning champ Jennifer Coolidge of “The White Lotus,” which is set to return in 2025 with an almost completely fresh cast. All nine acting nominees from the show’s most recent season are presumably finished playing their roles, as are 2023 featured female competitors Rhea Seehorn and J. Smith-Cameron from the concluded series “Better Call Saul” and “Succession.”

“Outwardly, he gives the impression that he doesn’t care very much,” Gary Oldman recently said about portraying a disgraced MI5 agent on the acclaimed AppleTV+ spy drama “Slow Horses,” explaining that underneath his disheveled exterior, there’s so much more to the man than what meets the eye. “He’s unkempt, and he uses it to play a game. It’s a defense mechanism, and I would say he cares a lot more than most.”
Oldman is mesmerizing in “Slow Horses” as the aloof and often contemptuous Jackson Lamb. He’s a pariah living out his twilight days as the begrudging leader of a group of fellow outcasts to whom he is almost comically obnoxious and offensive. He is truly captivating every time he’s on screen. So, a brilliant performance deserves a brilliant Emmy campaign. Apple TV’s “Slow Horses” has quickly become one of television’s most exciting shows. Based on the book by Mick Herron, the show combines razor-sharp writing (from showrunner Will Smith of “The Thick of It” fame) with masterclass acting from the likes of Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas.
The series follows the lives of those working at Slough House, a division of MI5 where disgraced agents who have made mistakes are exiled. It’s full of wit and humor, as one would expect from a show created by an alum of “The Thick of It,” but it’s also a genuine thriller, too, as all the best spy stories are. And critics have fallen for it since its inception, continuing to heap praise on this third season.

Parting is such sweet sorrow, particularly when it comes to Emmy voters. In recent years, the TV academy has given goodbye hugs to four Best Drama Series contenders for their final seasons: “Succession” (2023), “Game of Thrones” (2019), “Breaking Bad” (2014) and “The Sopranos” (2007). The only other dramas to land on this farewell list all hail from many decades ago: “Upstairs, Downstairs” (1977), “Elizabeth R” (1972), “The Bold Ones: The Senator” (1971) and “Playhouse 90” (1960). Will “The Crown” now become the ninth such program at the upcoming 2024 Emmys?
According to Gold Derby’s early Emmy odds, “The Crown” is way out front to win Best Drama Series for its sixth and final season. Rounding out the likely Top 8 nominees are “The Morning Show,” “The Gilded Age,” “Slow Horses,” “Loki,” “3 Body Problem,” “The Curse” and “Sugar.” Netflix notably split up the last episodes of “The Crown” into two parts — the first part streamed November 16 and dealt...

I’ll tell you who’s boring: astronauts. Show me an astronaut and I’ll show you someone who’s only ever made sensible choices in life. Study hard, work out, eat right. When you’re driving somebody else’s 10 billion dollar space van, you can’t afford to get creative. That’s why there’s no such thing as a maverick astronaut; the insurance would never cover it. Put an astronaut in a TV show and create an instant vacuum of dull, reliable excellence.
Unpredictable losers in TV shows are much more entertaining. Unpredictable losers whose nihilistic fug conceals a brain sharper than several tacks are even more entertaining than that. And unpredictable losers who’d be just as likely to emit a long and noxious fart as they would to step out of a fourth-floor window or foil a multi-pronged Russian intelligence operation, are the most entertaining of all.

A fresh set of actors are about to be enrolled in what the film series cast cheekily nicknamed ‘the Harry Potter Pension plan’. US streamer Max’s plan to re-adapt the Potter books into a TV show running for 10 consecutive years and starting in 2025/6 should keep the lucky new cast in greasepaint and copies of The Stage indefinitely.

Apple TV+ has announced a fifth season for the broadly acclaimed, darkly comedic spy drama “Slow Horses,” following its season three finale. The five-time BAFTA Award-nominated series stars Academy Award winner Gary Oldman, who was recently honored with a Golden Globe nomination for his outstanding performance as the irascible Jackson Lamb. The “Slow Horses” third season finale debuted on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 on Apple TV+. Since its premiere in 2022, “Slow Horses” has been celebrated as “undoubtedly the best spy series on television”; a “forceful, funny, and conspiratorial” series featuring “excellent writing and performances” that is just “so damn good.” All three seasons of “Slow Horses” hold a Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, as the series continues to receive global accolades from critics and fans alike. In season five of “Slow Horses,” everyone is suspicious when resident tech nerd Roddy Ho has a glamorous new girlfriend, but when a series of...

The ensemble includes Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, Samuel West, Sophie Okonedo, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Kadiff Kirwan, and Jonathan Pryce. Apple TV+ is returning once again to Slow Horses, with a fifth season greenlit, the first major renewal of 2024.
The Gary Oldman-starring adaptation of Mick Herron’s novels has proved a hit for the streamer, having aired its first season just 18 months ago and yet already moved to a fifth. It was handed a double series recommission for Seasons 3 and 4 in June 2022 and the third dropped last week.
The fifth outing of Slow Horses will be adapted from Herron’s Spook Street. Everyone is suspicious when resident tech nerd Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung) has a glamorous new girlfriend, but when a series of increasingly bizarre events occur across the city, it falls to the Slow Horses to work out how everything is connected.
Ensemble cast includes Oldman, who plays central character Jackson Lamb, along with Academy Award-nominee Kristin Scott Thomas and fellow nominee Jonathan Pryce, Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves,...
