With movies like Under Siege and his expertise in martial arts, there was a time when Steven Seagal was a prominent Hollywood action star. By pulling in massive box office numbers, the Hard to Kill star was expected to be the next big thing in the 90s. Unfortunately, Seagal’s career fell hard after the actor was embroiled in numerous serious controversies.

For a moment, Donald Trump seemed — despite everything — to be a whole new man.
We’d been told by speakers throughout the final night of the Republican National Convention that the attempt on his life had changed the 45th president’s outlook and his approach to politics. The experience had made him a unifier.
“He turned down the most obvious opportunity in politics to inflame the nation after being shot,” Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News anchor, said in his speech Thursday night, hours before Trump took the stage. “In the moment, he did his best to bring the country together.”
And then, somewhat deep into Trump’s stem-winder of a speech, he started talking about Hannibal Lecter.
“The press is always on me, because I say this,” he began, in an aside. He knew it was not the first time he’d brought up Hannibal, but he couldn’t resist.

What are the greatest action movies of all time? It’s a controversial question, isn’t it? Any time any publication or site puts out a new list of what they consider the best action movies of all time, it can’t help but generate a ton of controversy. Nevertheless, we here at JoBlo have decided to throw our hats into the ring with a list we really hope generates some nostalgia among our viewers but also encourages them to seek out the movies on this list that they may not have seen. But first, some may wonder where superhero movies are on this list. Given how broad that genre is, we decided to stick to old-school action, so we have left them off the list, as they deserve their own ranking. There are also a few absences from the list, notably some Jackie Chan films (like Police Story), with...

There's no denying that Friends is one of the most influential sitcoms ever created. The show premiered in 1994 and had a long 10 season run, creating a huge following. The show is in a way a staple of the genre, and it also gave the world a lot to obsess over.
For example, the show’s one-liners are definitely iconic, and are used by people in every country on a daily basis. Try saying “We were on a break” in any group of people, and there’s a good chance you will hear them laughing at once.
Friends is also known for its iconic guest star episodes. For example, no one will ever forget the one where Brad Pitt plays an offended used-to-be-fat guy from Rachel’s school. Even though the episode was cringeworthy, we still love it.
But there are cameos on Friends that we would rather erase from our minds.

Sony has given the upcoming live-action Street Fighter movie, which recently parted ways with directors Danny and Michael Philippou (Talk to Me), a release date of March 20, 2026.
With a release date now set, I’d imagine that we should soon be hearing about who will replace Danny and Michael Philippou at the helm of the Street Fighter movie. The Australian twin directors made their directorial debut with Talk to Me, which was a box-office success, grossing $92.2 million on a budget of $4.5 million. The reason behind their departure reportedly comes down to scheduling issues, with the studio hoping to get the ball rolling on Street Fighter sooner rather than later. The Philippous will be shooting their project, Bring Her Back starring Sally Hawkins and Billy Barratt, later this month in Australia.

“Street Fighter” has landed a March 20, 2026 domestic release date from Sony. The film, from Legendary, is co-developed and produced with Japanese game distributor Capcom.
Legendary nabbed the film and television rights to the highly popular gaming series in 2023. Since the franchise launched in 1987, Street Fighter has sold over 49 million units worldwide, becoming one of the most well-known and highest-grossing video game franchises of all time.

Jean-Claude Van Damme was once one of the biggest stars of the 90s. However, his career took a downturn in the 2000s and he mostly starred in low budget, straight-to-dvd movies. This changed when Sylvester Stallone cast him in The Expendables 2 and pushed him to the forefront of mainstream cinema once again. Despite slipping from the mainstream radar, Van Damme has always been renowned for his loyal, diehard followers. With that, classic movies like Sudden Death have remained in the pop culture ethos. On August 27, 2024, this movie will receive a second wind when it is released on...

After a couple of failed attempts to launch a film franchise, Legendary and Capcom are currently in development for a new film that will be based on the popular fighting game Street Fighter. The 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme has its share of fans and although the movie displays some cheesy fun (thanks to Raul Julia’s over-the-top megalomaniac portrayal of M. Bison), the movie series would not get another film until the attempted grittier take with 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. The game franchise, on the other hand, continues to thrive as the Street Fighter franchise has sold 49 million units worldwide, helping to keep the fighting game genre alive and well since the 80s.

Despite recent reassurances that everything was on track, Legendary and Capcom's Street Fighter reboot has been hit with a major setback.
According to THR, directors Danny and Michael Philippou - who helmed recent horror hit Talk To Me - have parted ways with the project.
The report notes that "scheduling is partly to blame," as Legendary and Capcom were hoping to begin shooting the movie fairly soon, and the Philippous had shifted their focus to what will now be their next project, Bring Her Back, which is scheduled to start production later this month in Australia.
It sounds like there might be a little more to this parting of ways than has been disclosed, but either way, it's a shame that the Philippou brothers will no longer take the helm, as they sounded very enthusiastic about the film during a recent interview.

The Australian twin filmmaking duo behind last year’s surprise horror hit Talk to Me are no longer working on Street Fighter, Legendary’s feature adaptation of the classic video game from Capcom.
Scheduling is partly to blame, according to sources. Legendary and Capcom were hoping to begin sooner than later. The Philippous, however, shifted focus to Bring Her Back, which reteams with their Talk to Me studio A24. That project, which will star Sally Hawkins and Billy Barratt, begins shooting later this month in Australia.
Street Fighter is now looking for a new filmmaker.

In the 80s and 90s, an interesting cycle of inspirational teacher movies was being made. You know the type – the film where a big star plays a down-and-out teacher who gets posted in some crime-ridden school, and they manage to turn things around? Often, they were based on true stories, like Stand and Deliver, Dangerous Minds, Lean on Me and a few others. Then, there were the more fanciful, tough-guy teacher movies, like Nick Nolte’s Teachers and James Belushi’s underrated The Principal.
But of all these movies, the most badass, by far, is a little movie called The Substitute starring Tom Berenger.
In it, he plays a mercenary who goes undercover as a substitute teacher to avenge a brutal assault on his girlfriend, a crusading teacher played by Heat’s Diane Venora. While initially only planning on staying long enough to find the teens responsible, he finds himself...

Being a movie star is both a blessing and a curse. The blessings are fairly obvious, but, like all things that are too good to be true, they bring with them the seeds for the curse that follows, which is that movie stardom can set actors up for that much greater a fall should they start to slip off their pedestal. Some instances of actors taking a hard fall are deserved when it's to do with their offscreen behavior, yet in instances where it's mostly to do with the projects they're involved with being subpar, it's hard not to feel sorry for them.
Take Burt Reynolds, for instance. By the end of the 1970s he was among the most well-known and highest-paid actors working, and as the 1980s rolled on he continued to work with other name stars and solid filmmakers like Dolly Parton, Don Siegel, Blake Edwards, his buddy Hal Needham,...

When news hit that comedy superstars Billy Crystal and Robin Williams were going to star in a movie together, under the direction of Ghostbusters’ Ivan Reitman no less, audiences were expecting one of the funniest films of all time. Instead, they got 1997’s Father’s Day, which was torn apart by critics and has been justifiably forgotten today.
I mean, the fact that Father’s Day was predicated on the idea that Sugar Ray is one of the greatest rock bands on Earth, and that’s not the worst part of the movie, is saying something. And wasting the comic talents of Julia Louis-Dreyfus should be some kind of a federal crime.
While we’re guessing that nobody is watching Father’s Day every June, as if it were the It’s a Wonderful Life of Father’s Day, the movie’s influence can still be felt today. How? Well,...

Nicholas Galitzine: The Artist Formerly Known as a Prince?
He’s played Cinderella’s Prince opposite Camila Cabello, the Prince of England in Red, White & Royal Blue and next will play He-Man, Prince Adam of Eternia, in Masters of the Universe. But is Hollywood’s latest “It” boy an actual prince? There has been a ton of speculation in the press that Nicholas Galitzine, 29, descends from a royal bloodline — specifically Russia’s House of Golitsyn (an alternate spelling of his surname), a noble family whose members were executed and exiled during the Russian Revolution. And many Galitzines did wind up in London, where Nick was eventually born in 1994. Unfortunately, that’s where the fairy tale ends. THR has unearthed documentation confirming that Nick’s paternal grandfather legally changed his name to Edward Ralph Alexander Galitzine on April 9, 1956. His birth name? Edward Ralph Alexander Tier. Alan Scarfe, the classically trained British Canadian actor known for his turns as bad guys in Double Impact and Lethal Weapon III and as Dr. Bradley Talmadge on the Upn sci-fi series Seven Days, has died. He was 77.
Scarfe died April 28 of colon cancer at his home in Longueuil, Quebec, his family announced.
Survivors include his son, actor Jonathan Scarfe (ER, Raising the Bar, Hell on Wheels, Van Helsing).
Born in England and raised in Vancouver, Scarfe portrayed the Romulans Tokath and Admiral Mendak on episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1991 and 1993 and was another alien, the powerful Magistrate Augris, on a 1995 installment of Star Trek: Voyager.
“Science fiction on film and television, especially if you are playing some kind of alien character with fantastic make-up, is great for actors with a strong stage background,” he said in a 2007 interview. “The productions need that kind of size and intensity of performance.

Many action stars tried their hand at a Die Hard copycat. Sylvester Stallone had Die Hard-on-a-mountain with his action movie Cliffhanger. Wesley Snipes had Die Hard-on-a-plane with the movie Passenger 57. Steven Seagal had both Die Hard-on-a-boat with Under Siege and Die Hard-on-a-train with Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. Martial arts star Jean-Claude Van Damme would get his own copycat film in the form of Die Hard-at-a-hockey-game with the 1995 film Sudden Death. You can now take the violent hockey action home with an all-new 4K transfer with the ultra HD Blu-ray from Kino, according to the announcement on Blu-ray.com.
Van Damme’s fare with this sports-themed film has its share of fans but is more notoriously known for the amusingly wild sequences that utilize its hockey setting, which include Van Damme fighting a terrorist who is disguised as a mascot for the Pittsburgh Penguins, as well as...

Johnny Cage, Mortal Kombat’s arrogant movie star, has become a fighting game icon over the decades. His signature sunglasses and cocky one-liners have become instantly recognizable and have become a character trait that has persisted through all the various reboots of the gaming series.
Very few fans know that the inspiration for this martial arts movie star came from Marvel Comics’ Iron Fist.
Mortal Kombat’s Johnny Cage Is Based on Marvel Comic’s Iron Fist
Johnny Cage retains his signature personality in the series reboot, Mortal Kombat 1.
Johnny Cage has been a staple of the Mortal Kombat series since his first appearance. Created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, Cage was originally made as a parody of the typical 1980s action hero, also drawing heavy influence from real-life martial artist and actor Jean-Claude Van Damme. However, while crafting Cage’s persona, Boon also looked to a rather unexpected character – Iron Fist.

What are the movies that allow you to have a good rest watching them without thinking too much about their hidden meanings? When Reddit discussed it, the verdict was that the most fruitful decade for such flicks was the 1980s, when lots of classic action films were released.
Here are 7 actions of the 80s to relax while watching them.
Die Hard (1988)
Bruce Willis’ cultish flick is one of the greatest action movies of all time. Following a police detective who starts a one-man war against a gang of ruthless thieves, it gave the world one of the brightest action heroes in movie history, John McClane.
First Blood (1982)
Another action star of the 80s is Sylvester Stallone, the lead of the action-packed Rambo franchise. Its first installment centered on John Rambo, a war veteran, who is forced to rely on his combat skills while he is surviving a massive manhunt held by police.

While Bloodsport, the 1988 martial arts tournament movie, is widely considered by fans to be Jean-Claude Van Damme’s best film, it almost never saw the light of day. Indeed, according to Nick De Semlyen’s book, “Last Action Heroes” (buy it here), the film was deemed unreleasable by Cannon Pictures head Menachem Golan. The film sat on the shelf for fourteen months and was considered so bad that Golan intended to release the movie direct-to-video.
Things got so heated that Golan refused to go ahead with a proposed sequel to Lone Wolf McQuade, which would have featured Van Damme teaming up with Chuck Norris (who was an early mentor to Jcvd). He wanted Michael Dudikoff instead.
According to the book, Van Damme, who had returned to his old job as a limo driver when the movie wrapped, convinced the studio to allow him to re-edit the film with Towering Inferno editor Carl Press.

The Cannes Film Festival has a storied history of infamous moments. We think of Brigitte Bardot in her bikini, Spike Lee threatening Wim Wenders with a baseball bat after losing the Palme d’Or, pretty much everything Lars Von Trier has said or done…But one that really caught the media’s attention was when Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren went at it on the red carpet, with people under the impression that the Universal Soldier co-stars and European macho men were really at each other’s throats. Turns out, it was all just a gag for the press.
It’s one thing that Universal Soldier was even being represented at the Cannes Film Festival but another entirely that it wasn’t even screened! As it was, despite a minor presence on the Palais des Festivals, Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi action flick wasn’t part of any screenings because it wasn’t complete.

With Wong Kar-wai being one of the names that are always mentioned when people all around the world refer to Asian cinema, we thought it would be interesting to do another ranking, and having his movies, a number of which are definitely masterpieces. As such, we asked Amp writers who have seen at least 8 of his features to rank them from worst to best. Notably, the two first titles got the same amount of votes and the third had just one vote less. In case you are wondering, the number one was the one who got most first places in the vote. Here is what the votes of Adriana Rosati, Rhythm Zaveri, Rouven Linnarz, Panos Kotzathanasis, Andrew Thayne and Jean Claude resulted in.

Morgan Freeman once quoted the nautical saying “long foretold, long last; short notice, soon past” to describe his acting career. He meant that it took him along time to achieve success in the acting profession but he hoped his long struggle would mean his career would last and not prove to be just a flash in the pan. His career has lasted and Freeman has had a nearly 30-year film career in major movies.
Freeman’s career started on the New York stage in the musical theater when he took over the role of Rudy the Maître d’ of the restaurant where the famous title number is performed. He was part of the groundbreaking moment when Pearl Bailey led an all-black cast into the production which had been running for years with white performers.
In the 1970s Freeman appeared for seven years and 680 episodes of the children’s television series “The Electric Company.

Action movie culture experienced a boom in the 1980s. Hollywood heavyweights Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone competed to see who could land the best roles, have the largest muscles, and score the most hits in their respective blockbusters. However, as the new decade began, the next wave of action stars began to emerge, led by the likes of Jean-Claude Van Damme (Jcvd) and Steven Seagal, who gained widespread recognition.
Well, it seems like even Hollywood’s mightiest have weighed in on this titanic tussle! Indeed, a long-running debate was reignited by none other than the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s god of thunder, Chris Hemsworth. No, it’s not Seagal, but according to the Australian powerhouse, Van Damme is the undisputed champ of adrenaline-pumping thrills.

We first heard about Legendary and Capcom's plans for a live-action Street Fighter reboot last April, and updates have been few and far between since. Now, the first promo poster for the movie has been unveiled at the Las Vegas Licensing Expo (via Collider).
As is generally the case with these Expo reveals, the poster doesn't feature any characters from the movie, but does give us a look at the video game-inspired title treatment. The cinematic adaptation of Street Fighter— a Japanese media franchise centering a series of games— proved to be quite hard to make after Jean-Claude Van Damme took a shot at it. The 1994 movie directed by Steven E. de Souza was adapted from the Street Fighter game series.

Now, nearly after three decades, a report of a Street Fighter reboot is swirling, but also struggling to make a hard splash. Fans are still doubtful about the movie adaptation of the games as Van Damme’s Street Fighter was not so impressive for fans or critics. And this was hard to endure for any action movie enthusiast. The movie could claim only an 11% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Plot: Russell Hatch an Interpol operative who takes on the role of father figure to Jayden, the son of an informant killed in a routine raid gone wrong.
Review: It’s nothing new for an action star of the past to show up in these lower-budget films. Geezer Teasers have often been a great way for action stars to cash a quick paycheck. But they tend to amount to nothing more than a bit part, while some younger actor does the majority of the action. So I was pleasantly surprised to see Jean-Claude Van Damme not only take center stage but appear in nearly every frame of Darkness of Man. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he’s not taking the easy way out and I respect him for it.

While Stallone and Schwarzenegger took the 80s by storm with their famous brand of one-man-army spectacles, the latter part of the decade would also see a new breed of tough guys branch out into a different trend of action. It wasn’t only about the ripped muscles and the gunplay and explosions. After martial arts had gone mainstream, stars such as Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal would carve out their own little place at the box office as they brought their expertise of hand-to-hand combat to the masses.
Naturally, other studios would want to get in on the action and the best thing about jumping on this trend is the fact that there is still an aspect of originality since each star would be spotlighting a specific sect of martial arts. For example, Michael Dudikoff would showcase Ninjitsu, Seagal showcased Aikido, Phillip Rhee showcased Tae Kwan Do,...

Jean-Claude Van Damme has kept a fairly low profile compared to many other 80s action heroes. And that includes such non-genre appearances as voice acting in kids films like Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3, Minions: The Rise of Gru as well as a cameo in the French comedy Haters. However, Darkness of Man sees him return to the Dtv action spotlight
As the film opens, Russel Hatch lies in a puddle of his own blood, bleeding out from several bullet wounds. He tells us in voice-over that, like every story, this began with a woman. And we go back to Miami two years prior when Hatch was an Interpol agent.

Although never named in any entries of the franchise, the deadly aliens in the "Predator" series are a species called the Yautja (pronounced "Yah-oot-Cha"). The films themselves do little to explain where they come from and what their civilization might be like. What little we know is based on seeing a few of them as intergalactic big-game trophy hunters, but is this true of their entire society? Is their civilization centered around the hunt? Or are the Predators we've seen pariahs, the Yautja equivalent to big-game trophy hunters like Walter Palmer, widely criticized for his participation in the controversial killing of both Cecil the lion and a protected ram in Mongolia?
In 2010's "Predators," Royce (Adrien Brody) quotes Hemingway, "Certainly there is no hunting like the hunting of man and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never really care for anything else thereafter." Like us,...

Any action fan, or even dedicated viewer of Corridor Crew's "Stuntmen React" series, should know the name Scott Adkins. Long before Adkins went all out for his role as German gangster Killa Harkan in "John Wick: Chapter 4," the British stunt performer and actor made a name for himself working as a stuntman for prominent Hong Kong action directors in the early 2000s. He went on to appear in dozens of action movies, from starring opposite Jean-Claude Van Damme in four separate films to doubling for Ryan Reynolds' Weapon XI in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." For his role as Gunnery Sergeant Barton Geddes in 2019's "Ip Man 4: The Finale," Adkins said star Donnie Yen — who also faced off against Keanu Reeves in "John Wick: Chapter 4" — requested him for the film by name.
Having remained somewhat of a B-movie action star for most of his career, Adkins is finally starting to get more mainstream recognition.

Spoiler alert: As much as Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt remain the undeniable draws of "The Fall Guy," there are multiple contenders in the cast for the sought-after crown of "Best Scene Stealer." You have Aaron Taylor-Johnson, an inspired bit of casting as the insufferable A-lister casting a long shadow over Gosling's stuntman Colt Seavers. Then there's the great Hannah Waddingham, chewing up the scenery (and then some) as the no-nonsense producer Gail Meyer who stops at nothing to keep the show on the road. Heck, you could even go with either of the two dogs that portrayed Jean Claude, the Australian Kelpie that only responds to French commands and takes on an unforgettable supporting role amid all the action.
But more than anyone else, it's Winston Duke who walks away with one of his funniest and most memorable performances in recent years as Dan Tucker, a veteran stunt coordinator...

Colt Seaver seems to have it all. He has one of the best jobs in the world as the stuntman for the world’s biggest action star, Tom Ryder. On top of that, he has fallen in love with camera operator Jody Moreno.
Everything seems perfect. But when a stunt on Ryder’s latest film goes wrong, Colt finds himself severely injured. No longer feeling invincible, he withdraws from everything… including his relationship with Jody.
Eighteen months later, Colt finds himself at rock bottom when the phone rings. Producer Gail Meyer wants him to return to stunts for Tom Ryder.
Colt is initially skeptical until Gail tells him that Jody is the director of Tom’s big blockbuster film, and she has requested him to do stunts. Seeing an opportunity to rekindle the flame with Jody, he immediately hops on a flight to Sydney to join the production.

In “Boy Kills World,” Bill Skarsgård has burning eyes and model cheekbones, sinewy arms popping out of a dirty red athletic vest, and a feral pout that makes him look like Jean-Claude Van Damme crossed with Lou Reed. He plays a deaf-mute avenger, known only as Boy, who kills people in insanely violent ways. Yet through it all, the character retains his innocence. He’s a wounded wild child in a man’s body.
Raised in a mountain hideaway by a martial-arts trainer and resistance fighter called the Shaman (Yayan Ruhian), who may remind you, at first, of the Zen master in “Kill Bill: Volume 2,” Boy had his past taken away from him by a vicious totalitarian regime. During the Culling, an annual ritual where law and order is maintained by having criminals confront each other in a state-sanctioned televised death match, Boy saw his little sister, Mina (Quinn Copeland...

From Geena Davis and Jamie Lee Curtis, to blaxploitation royalty Pam Grier; Joe Dante and Roland Emmerich, to genre legend Peter Hyams topping the bill – 2024’s Forbidden Worlds Film Festival promises the biggest (and maddest) year yet for genre fans in the South West.
Firing into its third year of taking over arguably Bristol’s best cinema screen – the abandoned IMAX at Bristol Aquarium, Forbidden Worlds has never been one to cater to the masses. It’s a true one-screen wonder of a festival, promising the most unusual and sought-after of cinematic treats; big, mad, weird shit projected large and loud, for three straight days.
For example, while 2024’s edition promises an explosive opening night with a 30th anniversary screening of none other than Keanu Reeves action classic The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down (otherwise known as Speed), look as far as the following day’s line-up and you’ll...

The 1990s represented a golden epoch for action cinema. This was the time which saw VHS and its digitized successor DVD introduce a whole new generation of fans to the magic of stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. And those titans from the ‘80s still claimed big wins, too, at the box office and home media via the likes of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Demolition Man, and Cliffhanger.
It was also the decade that saw audiences turn out in droves to theaters and rental stores to catch a glimpse of Steven Seagal’s flying fists in movies like Under Siege or Jean-Claude Van Damme and his trademark splits in Timecop; Jackie Chan finally got the larger American fanbase he so richly deserved thanks to the Rush Hour movies while Bruce Willis gave us Die Hard With A Vengeance, the best of all the Die Hard sequels, before pivoting...

Dev Patel's directorial debut "Monkey Man" is due in theaters on April 5, and reviews so far have been largely positive. /Film's own Jacob Hall praised the film for its efficient brutality, keen at Patel's abilities to wallow in emotions as he is capably murdering foes. Patel plays a character known only as "Kid," who seeks to murder a cadre of local bad guys as revenge for the death of his mother. In so doing, he unwittingly becomes a legendary hero for the locals, all beset by the same cadre of bad guys.
"Monkey Man" has been compared to "John Wick" in both its action brutality and lean premise. Patel also co-wrote the screenplay, produced the film, and likely did the catering as well, given his devotion to the project. If nothing else, "Monkey Man" seems to be Patel's proof to studios that he can handle major action projects.
