"The Easy Kind” isn’t the easiest kind of film to describe for someone who is getting a first look, as audiences did in its premiere screenings at the Telluride Film Festival this past weekend. On first blush, it might appear to be a documentary of the esteemed country singer Elizabeth Cook, who enjoys a sizable following for an independent artist, between her nearly 25-year discography and her SiriusXM radio show. But soon enough, for anyone who didn’t see the “narrative” notation in the program notes, it’s clear enough that much of the movie is scripted. David Letterman, Cook’s biggest booster in real life, plays himself in one scene, but Karen Allen, Charles Esten and Susie Essum are doing character roles, and Cook herself is “EC,” who shares the singer’s exact career history but has some fictional romantic interests.

You’ll get a strong sense of who country singer and songwriter Elizabeth Cook is the second she starts crooning in Katy Chevigny’s “The Easy Kind,” hauling out one of her signature songs, “Sometimes It Takes Balls to Be a Woman.” Things do get a bit more slippery from there, because while there is indeed an Elizabeth Cook who is a country singer and songwriter, there’s also the lightly fictionalized version of Elizabeth Cook who populates Chevigny’s narrative film. Both of them, it’s worth noting, are the kind of lady who would write — hell, who would live — a song about how demanding it can be to exist as a woman. All of it takes balls.
While a working knowledge of the real-life Cook might help smooth out some of the rougher edges of Chevigny’s drama, from the start, it’s clear Cook is somebody. Not...

Raiders of the Lost Ark has always been loved by fans of the Indiana Jones franchise — partly since it is the perfect entry in the Nazi-whipping adventure saga filled with mazes, booby traps, and Biblical treasures. However, to some others, the 1981 film is a stand-alone film that promised to deliver a successful franchise but failed to live up to the first film’s reputation.

As the first collaboration between Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg, the most commercially successful actor and director in Hollywood, Raiders of the Lost Ark was not entirely without its faults.
However, while the film still holds up to this day and resonates with a sense of fearless adventure among the audience, one aspect of the story also makes the fans uncomfortable being associated with the franchise.

Unsinkable puts an intriguing new spin on the tragic sinking of the Rms Titanic by shifting the lens to the post-disaster investigations. Led by the determined Senator William Alden Smith, played convincingly by Cotter Smith, these official inquiries sought answers and accountability in the aftermath. Assisted by journalist Alaine Ricard, portrayed compellingly by Fiona Dourif, fundamental questions are raised about what really unfolded that fateful night and who deserved blame for the immense loss of life.
Directors Cody and Brian Hartman immerse viewers in 1912 through their focus on these hearings, bringing an air of authenticity with period details while raising probing themes still relevant today. Smith and Ricard’s relentless fact-finding missions, facing many obstacles, epitomize the importance of uncovering truth, especially in matters of such magnitude.

Tales of Hollywood actors turning down profit participation in huge hits are rampant, as when Orson Welles rejected the initial $75,000 plus 10 percent of the gross offer on 1949’s The Third Man for a quick $100,000 dollars up front. Not bad for only ten days’ work. Plus, he needed cash to finance Othello right away so it all worked out… except The Third Man would ultimately become one of the most financially successful movies of Welles’ career. He later regretted this, of course, and if the director of Citizen Kane wasn’t enough of a genius to go for points, then certainly the iconic, and yet strangely underappreciated, actor Donald Sutherland wasn’t immune to bad monetary decisions either.
Sutherland, who passed away yesterday at age 88 after a long illness, had an incredible career littered with enduring classics like M*A*S*H, Klute, and Best Picture winner Ordinary People to his resume.

Donald Sutherland passed away Thursday at the age of 88, an actor so respected for his dramatic acting that he won an honorary Oscar in 2017. He’ll be remembered for Klute, Ordinary People, Don’t Look Now and even The Hunger Games, but don’t forget that Sutherland played key roles in three of the most influential comedies ever.
1 M*A*S*H
Take a seat, Alan Alda — Sutherland was the original Hawkeye Pierce in Robert Altman’s epic satire. Sutherland didn’t get along with the director, but who cares? It was Altman’s first hit-it-out-the-park classic, a movie that thumbed its nose at the Vietnam War by pretending to be about the Korean War. “Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland are two genuinely funny actors,” wrote Roger Ebert in his four-star review. “They don’t have to make themselves ridiculous to get a laugh. They’re funny because their humor comes so directly from their personalities.

Donald Sutherland, the beloved actor who starred in scores of films from The Dirty Dozen, Mash and Klute to Animal House and Ordinary People to Pride & Prejudice and The Hunger Games franchise and won an Emmy for Citizen X, died Thursday in Miami after a long illness. He was 88.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always had a bit of a boys' club vibe. The first official phase of the franchise that built up to "The Avengers" was spearheaded by Tony Stark's hard-partying ladies' man Tony Stark, while the most significant female members of the MCU to date have always been written as, at best, eye-rolling foils forced to acknowledge that most of their male colleagues are overgrown children who come through in the clutch when resolving a crisis that is partially of their own making.
This isn't much of a departure from the almost exclusively male-drawn and -written comic books of the 1960s-1980s that inspired the mostly male-directed MCU films. Aside from a boy scout like Steve Rogers (aka Captain America) or a cerebral conjuror like Doctor Strange, these guys have a good time off the clock. In a way, they have a kind of frat boy mentality.

There are a lot of great moments in Steven Spielberg's 1981 action-adventure film "Raiders of the Lost Ark," but nothing quite comes close to the film's intense climax. After following archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) and feisty bar owner Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) on their journey to try and stop the Nazis from stealing a biblical artifact, said Nazis actually manage to open the artifact — the Ark of the Covenant, the holy box that once held the Tablets of the Law, which contained the ten commandments passed down to Moses by God in the old testament. They open the box to try and get a peek at what's inside, only to have their Nazi faces melted right off like a bunch of action figures hit with a blowtorch. It's one of the most satisfying moments in cinema history, but according to Spielberg, it was also pretty much done by the seat of his pants.

We have discussed killers that received slasher movies, folklore turned cannibalism, and plenty of possession via person, home, or even object. What we haven’t done too much of is the good old-fashioned cult. While we took a deep dive into Jim Jones and the tragedy of Jonestown paired with the very well-done Sacrament, there are a ton of real-life cults and cult leaders that have been put to celluloid in an attempt to both cash in and tell a compelling story. I mean, I’m writing this right now on the couch while my wife watches a documentary about a cult on Netflix. True crime and religious cult stuff exist in popular forms like podcasts, shows, and of course movies too. Today we will look at two things that don’t get a lot of widespread attention. The 2007 horror movie Borderland (watch it Here) and what it is loosely...

The revelation come following outreach to Deadline on the part of multiple talent reps, who say money owed to clients is now several months late. The situation triggered a wave of rumors that the agency may be going under.

‘Beverly Hills Ninja’ Coming to Netflix March 1
Celebrate comedy legend Chris Farley by streaming Beverly Hills Ninja on Netflix beginning March 1. The 1997 martial arts comedy marks the final film released during Farley’s lifetime, as the actor died less than a year after its release.
Farley stars as Haru, adopted as a child by a clan of ninjas who believe he’ll become the master promised in legends. As expected, Haru never entirely becomes a ninja despite his best efforts.

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas’ summer in Hawaii circa 1977 might just be among the most fortuitous vacays in movie history. One of the Hollywood young gun directors was dejected during this holiday because he’d just been passed over to helm the next James Bond picture; the other was anxious about his new film opening that weekend—a little flick you might have heard of called Star Wars. Neither was entirely certain what he’d do next, but the pair got to talking about an idea Lucas had been kicking around for years. It would be inspired by all the B-serials they grew up watching; it would be way cooler than 007; and it starred a guy named Smith, Indiana Smith.
The concept was almost there, clearly, yet it would take both filmmakers, plus a legion of collaborators, to turn Indiana Jones into the cinema legend he is today. And a legend he is,...

As the mixed critical response and lackluster box office for "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" emphatically proves, they simply don't make 'em like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" anymore.
When Roger Ebert reviewed Steven Spielberg's action-adventure classic back in 1981, he opined that it played like "an anthology of the best parts from all the Saturday matinee serials ever made." As it happens, that was pretty much George Lucas' idea when he dreamt up Indiana Jones in the first place — and what an idea it was. The Indiana Jones franchise has since become one of the biggest blockbuster sagas in cinema history, with Dr. Henry Jones Jr. himself ascending to the status of pop culture icon in the process.
While 1984's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" has its defenders, and many fans of the series will swear 1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" is just as good as "Raiders,...

It's one of the most defining moments of the character of Indiana Jones, and the most key moment in terms of the tone of 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is when confronted by a master swordsman in the streets of Cairo, Indy (played with a mixture of Bogart-like weariness and gumption by Harrison Ford) makes a snap decision not to engage the brute in a lengthy and (likely) ill-fated physical bout. Instead, he merely pulls his revolver from its holster and shoots the swordsman point blank, allowing him to quickly continue the search for his missing partner, Marion (Karen Allen).

In 1843, London publishers Chapman & Hall released A Christmas Carol. Written by Charles Dickens and illustrated by John Leech, it was inspired in part by Dickens’s anger at inequality in his country, especially as it affected children. Despite its aversion to the upper classes, A Christmas Carol was an immediate hit among readers and critics. Given the book’s popularity, it’s no surprise that movie makers have picked up on the story many times. Between its clear redemption arc and ghostly premise, the story has everything that a good movie needs.

The noir crime drama features Priyanshu Painyuli, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Kubbra Sait, and Shruthy Menon in the lead roles. An action-packed and edge-filled drama, the series blends in a lot of dark and bloody elements with a twisted sense of comedy, presenting some very grisly scenarios in a morbidly comical fashion, showcasing its tilt towards the black-comedy style.
Directed and co-written by Navdeep Singh, the eight-episode series also features Manu Rishi Chadha, Kashyap Shangari, Manjiri Pupala, Shruti Jolly, Gyan Prakash, and Abhilash Thapliyal. It is streaming on Prime Video from November 30.

Indiana Jones is back. This time around he’s back to fight nazis and chase down another McGuffin. It’s a fun entry into the Indy series that you can’t help but think could have been so much more…
There’s a rhythm missing to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and a beat that it doesn’t quite hit. It’s like all the elements are there, just not quite ticking at the right speed, like the beat is just off and it’s knocking the rest of the dance off-rhythm. I think that the missing beat is Spielberg, he is the one who is the missing piece here. It’s like you assembled all the pieces,...

The gifts don’t stop in December at Disney+! In addition to holiday festivities all month long like the Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade and the CMA Country Christmas Special, the House of Mouse streamer will soon become the home for Whovians and Demigods.
Disney+ will deck the halls with a glut of Gallifreyan adventures and the premiere of the long-awaited “Doctor Who” anniversary specials. The first of the three debuted on BBC One and on the Disney streamer on Nov. 25, but the other two David Tennant and Catherine Tate-led serials will arrive on Dec. 2 and Dec. 9. Later in the month, ring in Christmas with the franchise’s holiday special with Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson getting their full-episode debuts.
And the wait is over for “Percy Jackson” fans, who will see the beloved Rick Riordan book series get a (hopefully) respectful adaptation with the premiere of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Steel yourselves for adventure, drag a Coca-Cola-soaked comb through your coif, and stand at least two miles away from the mushroom cloud because we’re looking back on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull!
Fifteen years before Indy turns the Dial of Destiny, the unflinching archaeologist embarks on the most contentious mission of his fabled career to recover a telepathic crystal skull before a squad of Kgb agents, led by Cate Blanchett’s Irina Spalko, can use the jeweled remains to unlock the secrets of mind-controlling knowledge. Peppered with triple-crosses, death-defying acts of derring-do, and ill-fated attempts at passing the torch, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull finds the saga at a technological crossroads, with much of the franchise’s on-location magic replaced with CGI environments and rubber snakes.

Lucasfilm has announced that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will stream exclusively on Disney+ starting on December 1st, 2023. On the same day, they’ll also debut Timeless Heroes, a feature-length documentary about how everyone’s favorite bullwhip-wielding archaeologist in cinema came to be.
The fifth and final installment in the franchise, Dial of Destiny stars Harrison Ford — who did his own stunts, mind you — as the titular hero, and featured a surprise cameo from fan-favorite Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood. It also boasts notable newcomers Phoebe Waller-Bridge as his goddaughter Helena Shaw and Mads Mikkelsen as a former Nazi scientist. The cast is rounded out by Boyd Holbrook, Antonio Banderas, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, Oliver Richters, and Ethann Isidore.
Directed by veteran documentary maker Laurent Bouzereau, Timeless Heroes focuses largely on Ford’s undeniable charm, and how his upbringing and early career led him to become the perfect Indy.

While looking for a project to follow the success of his films The French Connection and The Exorcist, director William Friedkin came across a book he found to be fascinating: Cruising by Gerald Walker, about “a series of murders in the gay bars of New York, and a detective assigned to go undercover to find the killer”. But Friedkin had already made a movie that centered on gay characters, The Boys in the Band, so he let the Cruising adaptation go by. For a while, Steven Spielberg was attached to direct the film, but wasn’t able to get it into production. In his memoir The Friedkin Connection, Friedkin revealed that it wasn’t until someone he worked with on The Exorcist turned out to be a real-life serial killer that he thought of the way to approach Cruising.

Within the filmography of the late William Friedkin, one of the most controversial works he delivered was Cruising. Set during a hot summer in New York City, the story sees a serial killer murdering and dismembering several gay men within the world of S&m and leather bars. Assigned to this case is Steve Burns (Al Pacino), an officer whose physical similarities to the victims makes him perfect to go undercover, with the prospect of rapidly advancing his career by doing so.
Poorly received upon release, this film was protested by New York’s gay community under the belief that it stigmatised them. This reviewer admittedly may not be the best judge as an outsider, although I...

"Raiders of the Lost Ark" isn't just the best Indiana Jones movie, it also looks the best of all the films. 1981's inaugural Indy outing is visually stunning thanks to cinematographer Douglas Slocombe's shot composition and lighting. It's even more impressive how good "Raiders" looks when you consider that director Steven Spielberg was in a bit of a hurry to get his shots in the can.
Writing in American Cinematographer, the esteemed filmmaker revealed how the $20 million budget provided by Paramount Pictures would "pay for 87 days of shooting," but that he had a whole other, 73-day schedule worked out. It was all so that Spielberg could, in his words, "make 'Raiders' economically and make it look like $40 million and, in fact, spend only $20 million."
As a result, "Raiders" had Spielberg doing things he swore he'd never do again, like having Harrison Ford race a 300-pound boulder for the film's famous opening sequence — multiple times.

This article contains spoilers for "Ahsoka" episode 4, "Fallen Jedi."
The fourth installment of "Star Wars: Ahsoka," titled "Fallen Jedi", pulls no punches when it comes to having the situation go from bad to worse. As the forces of evil led by the descendent of the Witches of Dathomir, Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto), and fallen Jedi Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson) work to extract the information from the map to find Grand Admiral Thrawn (the still unseen Lars Mikkelsen), Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) work to repair their ship. After it got shot down last episode, they need to get it back in the air or retrieve the map personally. While Huyang (David Tennant) attempts repairs, Ahsoka and Sabine take to the forest. They're stopped by Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno) and Marrok (Paul Darnell), who engage them in an intense fight in the woods. Though Huyang warned Ahsoka and Sabine to stay together,...

When James Mangold took the adventuring archaeologist reins from Steven Spielberg on "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," fans were wary for a couple of reasons. One was the simple fact that, aside from ABC's "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles," Spielberg was the series' sole director. As the "Jaws" sequels and the "Jurassic World" series proved, no one can match The Beard when it comes to terrifying and elating audiences, sometimes in the same scene. The other fear had to do with legacy. When Harrison Ford announced at September 2022's D23 expo that this was his last go-round in the fedora ("I'm not falling down for you again"), we took him at his word. He turned 81 this year, and has incurred all manner of injuries via stunts and aviation mishaps.

Sometimes a title of a movie is everything. It's hard to imagine that "Blade Runner" or "Die Hard" would have become as recognizably famous as they are now without their filmmakers co-opting those snazzy titles. One filmmaker who's consistently chosen distinct, eye-grabbing titles for his films is Steven Spielberg. There are the to-the-point emotional titles, the mysterious and intriguing ones, and the descriptive ones.
Upon watching the movie, the title "Raiders of the Lost Ark" falls neatly into this latter category. Yet for people new to the adventures of the original character Indiana Jones back in 1981, it must've seemed not just mysterious, but borderline confusing. Who are these "raiders?" What is this "lost ark?" And why are they raiding it at all?
That's precisely the take on the title one of the cast members of "Raiders" had when they first heard it. This actor was no supporting player, either: it was Karen Allen,...

One of the most touching moments I've seen in a movie this year arrived at the end of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," when Karen Allen's Marion Ravenwood returns to help nurse our badly beat-up hero back into shape. We learn earlier in the movie that the source of their estrangement was the death of their son Mutt (Shia Labeouf), who settled a dispute with his headstrong father by enlisting in Vietnam. Indy blamed himself for Mutt's demise and took to the bottle. Unwilling to watch her husband drink himself to death, Marion left.
That the film ends on an upbeat note is hardly a surprise. The Indy films are escapist entertainments meant to send you out of the theater on a high. But a part of me worried that we might get a throwaway off-screen appearance like Holly Gennaro bawling out John McClane over a payphone...

"Raiders of the Lost Ark" remains the best Indiana Jones film partly due to its very real sense of danger. According to John Rhys-Davies, who played Indy's sidekick Sallah, director Steven Spielberg "was making it up as he goes along. The script was endless pages of action description. A lot of the dialogue was (improvised) by Steven; Steven and Harrison [Ford]; or Steven, Harrison and myself." Indeed, one of the most famous scenes in "Raiders" was improvised by Ford, wherein he shoots stuntman Terry Richards' swordsman during the Cairo marketplace scene.
But while the spontaneous nature of filming "Raiders" lent the film an air of excitement and danger, it also made for a literally dangerous shoot, to the extent that Spielberg was amazed Ford's stunt team made it through the production alive. The director has written about his remorse over allowing Ford to perform many of the stunts himself and...

John Carpenter may not be a real-life carpenter, but he sure has built himself a legacy. It's just one made of movies, not wooden sticks.
Seriously though, any genre movie fan will probably tell you that John Carpenter has made a staggering number of classic motion pictures. "Halloween" may not have invented the slasher genre, but it defined it. "The Thing" may not have invented gory monster effects, but it raised the bar and few films have even nudged it in the decades that followed. "Big Trouble in Little China" is one of the most subversive films of the 1980s, tearing down the whole "badass" genre of cinema by placing a musclebound white American hero in the center stage and then revealing him to be nothing more than a comic relief sidekick in a story about Chinese mythology that he's too damned ignorant to comprehend. And We could go on.

For Oscar-winning film composer Michael Giacchino (“Up”), Steven Spielberg’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark” is the defining movie of his life. It’s what sparked his love of movies and film scores, and what started him on his path to becoming a successful composer, all thanks to John Williams’ rousing, orchestral masterpiece.
Giacchino, who most recently scored Taika Waititi’s “Next Goal Wins” and Juan Antonio Bayona’s “Society of the Snow,” and is prepping a remake of the giant ant movie “Them!” as his directorial feature debut, first saw “Raiders” as a 13-year-old in New Jersey when it opened the summer of 1981. He went back about a dozen times and even sneaked a tape recorder into the theater so he could replay it every night. He also had the soundtrack on vinyl and later bought a second LP containing score, dialogue, and sound effects.

Few deaths in the "Indiana Jones" films as quite as unforgettable as that of Pat Roach's Nazi mechanic in "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Upon spotting Indy (Harrison Ford) duking it out with one of his fellow Nazi handymen near a plane preparing to take off, Roach's nameless, burly villain smiles to himself as he removes his shirt, clearly itching for a fight. He proceeds to give Indy quite the thrashing and might've well won their match, had he bothered to turn around in time and spot the spinning airplane propellor bearing down on him.

When it comes to the female companion characters of the "Indiana Jones" franchise, Karen Allen's Marion Ravenwood stands above the rest. After her debut in "Raiders of the Lost Ark," Marion has returned for two other adventures — "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," and the recent "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny."
Even before "Dial of Destiny" came out, Indy himself, Harrison Ford, made it clear that this would be his last time playing the part of the globe-trotting, whip-cracking archeologist. And based on the less-than-stellar box office returns for "Dial of Destiny," it's unlikely Disney is going to be rushing to make another Indiana Jones movie anytime soon. But while Ford has hung up his hat and whip, Allen isn't quite ready to say goodbye to Marion just yet.
