A24 is teaming up with Chernin Entertainment and award-winning Russian director Egor Abramenko (Sputnik) to produce its next terrifying horror film, Altar. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but 1428 Elm has learned that the script, written by Will Soodik (Westworld), is based on a short story by Philip Fracassi.
Set during a momentous summer in a young boy's life, Altar sounds like a twisted coming-of-age story where he is "forced to grow up faster than he ever imagined." Actress Lily Collias (Good One) will star alongside newcomer Hudson Behling. They will be joined by stars like January Jones (Mad Men), David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer), and Kyle MacLachlan (Fallout).
Fracassi is a Bram Stoker-nominated author who has written many acclaimed stories and novels, including the award-winning collection Behold the Void and novels like Gothic, Boys in the Valley, and the upcoming The Third Rule of Time Travel.

Prince Harry has identified his ongoing legal fights with British tabloids as a major contributor to the deterioration of his relationship with the royal family.
In a recent interview for ITV’s documentary Tabloids on Trial, the Duke of Sussex expressed frustration with his family’s reluctance to join him in confronting the press. The 39-year-old royal suggested this inaction has further strained family ties.
“It’s a complex issue, but I believe this is a significant part of it,” Harry told interviewer Rebecca Barry. He added that discussing family matters often leads to harsh criticism from the media, making it difficult to address the topic openly.
The hour-long documentary explores the 2011 phone-hacking scandal and examines Harry’s recent lawsuits against various publishers. It also features other public figures such as actor Hugh Grant, singer Charlotte Church and former soccer player Paul Gascoigne whose lives were ruined by the scandal.

Prince Harry has given his first interview since his privacy lawsuit win against a major U.K. tabloid, speaking at length about the ongoing legal battle and why the late Queen Elizabeth II is “very much up there saying, ‘See this through to the end.'”
In ITV’s deep-dive documentary Tabloids on Trial, which aired in the U.K. on Thursday night, the Duke of Sussex was among myriad names, including Hugh Grant, former England soccer star Paul Gascoigne and ex-Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who opened up about their fight for justice in the extensive phone-hacking scandal and subsequent legal battles.
The prince alleges that he was targeted by journalists and private investigators working for Rupert Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers (Ngn) titles The Sun and the now-defunct News of the World, which closed in 2011. Grant was also among those involved in the Ngn lawsuits (the Briton settled the...

The Grammys’ visual media field honors the best in music made for film, television and other formats. This year’s contenders range from blockbuster soundtracks to more under-the-radar but important material from critically beloved artists.
For Best Song for Visual Media, the race is full of plausible winners. Olivia Rodrigo could take home another Grammy this year here for “Can’t Catch Me Now,” the lead single from the “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” soundtrack. There’s precedent for Rodrigo, as Taylor Swift previously won here for a song from the same franchise, “Safe and Sound” from the original “Hunger Games”; both, however, were snubbed by the Oscars.
Speaking of Oscars, one Academy Award-nominated song that could be a contender here is “It Never Went Away” performed and co-written by Grammy favorite Jon Batiste for his documentary “American Symphony.” Batiste doesn’t always win at these awards,...

Jay Leno is known for two things: hosting The Tonight Show and preventing other people from hosting The Tonight Show. Okay, three things if you count repeatedly crashing vintage motor vehicles. The point is, Leno isn’t generally known for being a great actor, even despite the fact that, in his pre-talk show days, he literally starred in a Rush Hour-esque action-comedy with Pat Morita. It wasn’t good.
Leno later admitted that his only starring vehicle, Collision Course, was “terrible” and the clunky process put him off of film acting entirely.
But despite that disastrous experience, Leno was apparently still game to co-star in an upcoming movie. And it’s a drama. About The Beatles. Seriously.

After a series of brief teaser promos, Netflix has released a full trailer for its upcoming Greek mythology show, Kaos, which stars Jeff Goldblum as the all-powerful King of the Gods, Zeus.
From the writer of The End of the F*cking World and the producers of Chernobyl, the 8-episode series is a mythological dark-comedy which revolves around six humans as they discover their connection to each other and to a long-standing ancient prophecy while being forced to contend with the corrupt and arrogant gods of Greek mythology.
The footage introduces Goldblum's stylish take on Zeus, who lives in the lap of luxury while demanding that mortals worship him. It seems his power is diminished when humans stop believing in and fearing the gods, and Zeus sets out to do something about it.
Zeus' exact plan is not explained here, but it sounds like he intends to unleash the might...

Prince Harry Reveals Royal Rift Caused in Part by Family’s Refusal to Take British Tabloids to Court

Prince Harry has revealed that the royal family’s unwillingness to join him in taking on Britain’s notorious tabloid media in a courtroom battle that he’s been fighting — and winning — for the past few years is a “central piece” to the rift that’s formed between them as he opted for the “greater good.”
The Duke of Sussex did not elaborate on the matter when questioned about the cause of his estrangement from his older brother, Prince William, and father, King Charles. While Harry moved his family to Southern California with his wife, Meghan Markle, in June 2020, he has returned to London intermittently as a legal battle against several tabloid papers has unfolded in the high courts there.
When asked by ITV’s Rebecca Barry if the extent of his determination to fight the tabloids “destroyed the relationship with your family,” he replied, “I think that’s certainly a central piece to it.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Apple TV+’s “Presumed Innocent” Season 1 finale titled “The Verdict.”
Since David E. Kelley’s “Presumed Innocent” debuted on Apple TV+ last month, the series has taken viewers on a ride filled with shocking clues and troubling revelations, all while diving into the minds of narcissistic and obsessive men. Over eight episodes, “Presumed Innocent” followed former chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), who was on trial for the murder of his lover and colleague Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve).
In the “Presumed Innocent” finale — an episode that was not provided as a screener ahead of time to journalists —viewers learned that Carolyn’s killer is Rusty’s teenage daughter, Jaden (Chase Infiniti). After Rusty was found not guilty, this is how audiences found out who did it.

The time has come for the annual presentation of the Toronto International Film Festival. The festivities will include many premieres of titles, whether it be their big world premiere, their North American premiere, or even just their Canadian premiere. Deadline has unveiled a number of upcoming films that attendees are expected to see this year.
Among those premiering are some star-studded affairs, such as the war drama Without Blood, which stars Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir and is directed by Angelina Jolie. The film is based on the Alessandro Baricco novel. Hard Truths from Mike Leigh stars Marianne Jean-Baptiste. That film is being described as an “Ongoing exploration of the contemporary world with a tragicomic study of human strengths and weaknesses.”

The 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival announced its full lineup of Galas and Special Presentations today in what is a complete embarrassment of riches as the event blasts off after last year’s actors strike with 29 titles having rights for sale.
Among those movies making their world premieres is the Angelina Jolie-directed war drama Without Blood, starring Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir, based on the Alessandro Baricco novel. There’s also Mike Leigh’s first movie in six years, Hard Truths, with Marianne Jean-Baptiste, which is billed as an “ongoing exploration of the contemporary world with a tragicomic study of human strengths and weaknesses.”
Gia Coppola has the drama The Last Showgirl, starring Pamela Anderson, Dave Bautista, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kiernan Shipka and Billie Lourd, which follows a seasoned stage dancer who must plan for her future when her show abruptly closes after a 30-year run.

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy is currently filming, and a fresh piece of casting news has come to light. Possible spoiler.
Spoilers for the Bridget Jones films lie ahead.
Helen Fielding’s big knicker wearing, perennial singleton Bridget Jones, as played by Renee Zellweger, has headlined three feature films so far – 2001’s Bridget Jones’ Diary, 2004’s Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason and 2016’s Bridget Jones’ Baby.
The first film followed Bridget as she struck up a relationship with the smarmy, charming Daniel Cleaver, played by Hugh Grant, not realising that her perfect match is Mark Darcy. Darcy of course was played, in an inspired piece of casting, by Colin Firth – the pathetic fist fights between the two men stand as highlights of both films.
The second sees Bridget once again taken in by Cleaver’ charms in Thailand, before she ends up in prison. The third film sees Bridget end up pregnant,...

With several Emmys stalwarts not eligible for nominations this year, it was expected that there would be a number of surprises among the 2024 Emmy nominations.
But while some series and stars broke through, other anticipated nominees from new shows didn’t fare as well as they’d hoped.
Despite a big awards push, Showtime’s The Curse failed to receive any Emmy nominations, with star Emma Stone among the awards hopefuls not nominated. Similarly, the Nicole Kidman-fronted Expats for Amazon’s Prime Video was also left out of this year’s nominations. And HBO’s The Regime only earned one nod, for its costumes, leaving stars Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant snubbed.
Other acclaimed actors who failed to receive nominations include Kelsey Grammer, not nominated for his Frasier revival after the original series was a regular Emmy winner; Abbott Elementary supporting players William Stanford Davis and Chris Perfetti; The Gilded Age...

A24 has shared the official trailer for the latest twisty tale to join their slate, titled A Different Man. Starring Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve, and Adam Pearson, the dark comedy-drama first premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, A Different Man centers on Edward (Stan), an aspiring actor who lives with a facial deformity. After undergoing a medical procedure and dramatically changing his life, the trailer indicates that Edward isn’t quite free from the ghosts of his past — especially when he encounters another actor tasked with playing Edward himself, pre-surgery.
The trailer also shows glimpses of Reinsve, known for her incredible work in 2021’s The Worst Person in the World, and Pearson, who audiences may remember from 2014’s Under the Skin. As a real actor living with neurofibromatosis, Pearson has spent years campaigning and raising awareness aimed at decreasing the bullying that...

Two and a Half Men witnessed one of its most complicated moments when Charlie Sheen was fired from the show. Despite being a hit show on television, the Chuck Lorre sitcom faced a major hurdle when Sheen launched a public tirade against the creator. Some of his words towards the revered hitmaker were so disrespectful that fans still find it difficult to forgive the star.

Stars: Jerry Seinfeld, Rachael Harris, Christian Slater, Jim Gaffigan, Hugh Grant, Amy Schumer, Mikey Day, Patrick Warburton, Max Greenfield, Melissa McCarthy, Thomas Lennon, Bobby Moynihan, James Marsden | Written by Jerry Seinfeld, Spike Feresten, Andy Robin | Directed by Jerry Seinfeld

More moviegoers want to enjoy independent cinemas, contrary to reports.
Among the closure of local theaters like Hugh Grant recently lamented, the National Audience Survey, conducted by Art House Convergence, found that independent exhibitors are still in high demand. More than 32,000 people, ranging in age from 15 to 98 years old, from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, confirmed that there is a need for indie theaters.
Forty-six cinemas across the country participated in the survey, which illustrated that audiences go to art house cinemas for more films outside the mainstream (84 percent), interesting programming and events (73 percent), “more films I like” (66 percent), and more of a sense of community (60 percent.)
“While we’re constantly met with clickbait analysis about the perilous state of theatrical exhibition from Hollywood’s perspective, it was remarkable to hear from the audiences of independent cinemas across the U.S. for the results of our 2024 National Audience Survey,...

Hugh Grant is “miserable” due to the closure of his local movie theater.
The actor lamented Cineworld’s decision to close a quarter of its cinemas in the U.K., including his own Fulham Rd outpost.
“Fulham Rd cinema closing after 94 years. Strangely unbearable,” Grant posted on X. “Let’s all sit at home and watch ‘content’ on ‘streaming.’ While scrolling. Miserable face emoji.”
Actor Michael Warburton commented on Grant’s post, writing, “Part of my Cinema-going history for sure and therefore damnably sad & infuriating in equal measure. Once these palaces are gone they don’t come back people!”
Of course, Grant isn’t entirely removed from the shift in entertainment industry business models, as his recent film “Unfrosted” debuted solely on Netflix. His additional roles in “Wonka” and the upcoming horror film “Heretic” both have theatrical releases. Grant is also reprising his beloved role in the latest “Bridget Jones” franchise installment,...

Hugh Grant recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to mourn the closing of his local U.K. movie theater. Cineworld announced earlier this month it was closing down Picturehouse, a boutique arm of movie theater chains that includes Grant’s beloved Fulham Road cinemas.
“Fulham Rd cinema closing after 94 years. Strangely unbearable,” Grant wrote to his followers. “Let’s all sit at home and watch ‘content’ on ‘streaming.’ While scrolling. Miserable face emoji.”
Several other members of the British film and television industry replied to Grant’s post with their own shock and owe over the movie theater’s closing. Broadcaster Terry Christian wrote: “Lived around the corner from a cinema as a kid – like something magic. We used to walk around and look at the stills of what was showing and imagine. Should protect them like the French do.”

A24 has unveiled the gripping trailer for its upcoming psychological horror film, Heretic, directed and written by the talented duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Starring Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East, the film promises a chilling exploration of faith and fear, set against the backdrop of a sinister game orchestrated by Grant’s character, Mr. Reed.
In Heretic, two young Mormon missionaries, portrayed by Thatcher and East, encounter a nightmare when they knock on the wrong door during their mission. They are greeted by Mr. Reed, played by Hugh Grant, who lures them into a terrifying game of psychological torment. The trailer showcases Reed’s menacing challenge: “I won’t keep you if you wish to leave, but I want you to choose which door to go through based on your faith,” he declares, pointing to two doorways labelled “Belief” and “Disbelief.” The scene escalates into a life-sized labyrinth,...

Hugh Grant has spoken out against the closure of his local Picturehouse Cinema in southwest London on the eve of screens going black at the venue which has been home to a cinema theater for nearly one hundred years.
Picturehouse, the UK boutique cinema arm of ailing global exhibitor Cineworld, announced the closure on July 11 of its Fulham Road cinema theater, last month.
Grant, who lives close to the cinema theater and is regularly captured by paparazzi whizzing about the area on his Vespa, lamented the move.
“Fulham Rd cinema closing after 94 years. Strangely unbearable. Let’s all sit at home and watch « content » on « streaming ». While scrolling. Miserable face emoji,” the Wonka and Love Actually star wrote on his @HackedOffHugh X account.

Netflix has officially announced the release date for its highly anticipated dark comedy series “Kaos,” a modern reimagining of Greek mythology starring Jeff Goldblum as Zeus. The show, created by Charlie Covell of “The End of the F***ing World” fame, is set to premiere on August 29, 2024, with all episodes available for streaming on the same day.
“Kaos” presents a contemporary twist on classic Greek myths, centering on Zeus, the King of the Gods, as he grapples with his own mortality and paranoia. The series’ premise revolves around Zeus discovering a wrinkle on his forehead, triggering a downward spiral of fear and instability as he becomes convinced his reign is coming to an end.
Jeff Goldblum, known for his unique charisma and memorable roles in “Jurassic Park” and “Thor: Ragnarok,” steps into the sandals of Zeus. Netflix describes his character as “an all-powerful being who’s determined to hold onto that status by any means necessary.

I’m going to tell you a secret: I think the first Paddington movie is better than its more critically-adored sequel. Not in every way is this one better: There’s a couple instances of harsh overlighting that take out some shots at the knees, like a key character emerging from a phone booth as a one-sided meet-cute. You could also say that both films - but maybe especially this one - are leaning into Wes Anderson-type confectionaries, especially with the score. But Paddington’s got a lot of buoyant, colorful entertainment to recommend it, and I can’t help but feel Nicole Kidman’s delightful, icy villainess has been overlooked as one of this series’ most notable achievements, alongside the children’s-book palette, Hugh Grant’s more lauded performance in Paddington 2, and fumbling the bag on Sally Hawkins for the upcoming trip to Peru.

Although 2023 Emmy nominations voters were able to view the entire second season of “The Bear” while judging the merits of its first, the team behind the FX series did not employ a similar strategy in 2024. Nonetheless, the newly released third season will still influence TV academy members as they spend part of August deciding whether season two is worthy of any wins. The latest episodes have already impacted the mindsets of Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy predictors, who have collectively boosted its odds in several categories over the past week.
As has been the case since this Emmys season began, “The Bear” currently holds over 80% of the Best Comedy Series win votes in our predictions center. Even now that our number of participating readers exceeds 3,000, none of this category’s other candidates have managed to crack 10%. “The Bear” is also expected to dominate five of the six comedy acting races,...

In a surprising twist to the 2024 holiday movie season, Universal Pictures has shifted the release date of its highly anticipated musical adaptation “Wicked” to November 22, setting the stage for a potential box office showdown with Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II.”
The move places “Wicked,” directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, in direct competition with the sword-and-sandal epic featuring Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, and Pedro Pascal. This scheduling decision has sparked comparisons to the 2023 “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, where “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” shared a release date and both achieved remarkable success.
“Wicked,” based on the hit Broadway musical, tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and her unlikely friendship with Galinda, who becomes Glinda the Good Witch. The star-studded cast also includes Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, and Peter Dinklage.

A Quiet Place: Day One is on its way to the big screens, and is already backed up by stunning critically approving ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. A sequel to John Krasinski’s masterpiece thriller film series with wife Emily Blunt, this one features Lupita Nyong’o in the lead instead, as opposed to the previous two installments in the series. However, it hasn’t earned a lot of fan approval yet.

In fact, if anything, even the thunderous ratings that the Tomatometer has for this Joseph Quinn-starrer horror/sci-fi seem to be lacking when it comes to convincing fans and gaining their approval. And, as fan reviews hint at it, it sounds like the time to address the racist elephant in the room, which is Nyong’o replacing Blunt in the movie, when the latter gave a truly epic performance.
