Clerks and Mallrats director Kevin Smith makes his most personal film yet with The 4:30 Movie. Here’s the trailer.
Just as Steven Spielberg mined his film obsessed childhood for The Fabelmens, so Clerks and Mallrats director Kevin Smith will take a nostalgic look back at his teenage years in The 4:30 Movie.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Writer-director Kevin Smith presents his most personal film to date with this coming-of-age story — set in the summer of 1986 — that follows three sixteen-year-old friends, who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local cineplex. When one of the guys (Zajur) invites the girl of his dreams to see an R-rated film one day, all hilarity breaks loose, as a self-important theater manager (Ken Jeong) and teen rivalries interfere with his best-laid plans.
The cast also includes Sam Richardson, Genesis Rodriguez, Justin Long, Jason Lee, Rachel Dratch, Kate Micucci, Adam Pally, Harley Quinn Smith and Method Man.

Like every summer, the hottest season of Glen Powell’s career was doomed to cool down eventually.
Starting with the surprise streaming success of Richard Linklater’s action romcom Hit Man back in early June and peaking with the mega budget disaster film Twisters that’s currently pulling in impressive box-office returns, movie-watchers have spent the last couple of months swirling in a storm of powerfully Powell proportions as the chiseled, charismatic and comically inclined leading man continues to establish himself as a veritable cinema superstar. As such, Powell is looking to cap off his career-defining warm season in the fall by joining other A-listers like Mila Kunis and Seth MacFarlane in the Family Guy Hulu Halloween special on October 14th.

There’s barely any actor in the entertainment industry who would sell their soul to Lord Voldemort to get an endorsement from an acclaimed filmmaker like Martin Scorsese. But when it came to the Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, he apparently received the director’s alleged praise out of nowhere, back in 2010.

Fresh out of the Harry Potter fame, The Sun had once reported how Rupert Grint had earned Martin Scorsese’s apparent praise and comparison with Leonardo DiCaprio. It was also stated that Scorsese had supposedly expressed his desire to cast Grint as a gangster in his films. However, later on, the outlet’s report turned contradictory, when Scorsese denied watching any of the Harry Potter films.

Richard Linklater‘s filmography is nothing if not varied, having made searing dramas to stoner comedies, from play adaptations to rock n roll movies, and even a rotoscope animated film or two. Most significantly he took experimental chances on several films, which are among the most remarkable works in the past two decades.
One of those experiments, the trilogy of “Before” films with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy brought Linklater his first two Academy Award nominations for Best Screenplay, and he was nominated for three more Oscars for 2014’s “Boyhood” — for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Also for “Boyhood,” Linklater won his first two Golden Globe Awards (for Best Film Drama and Best Director) and was nominated for a third for his screenplay.
Linklater has always got some project in some form of production, and is currently working on the upcoming “Merrily We Roll Along,” which will be shot over the next 20 years.

With Richard Linklater, Edgar Wright, and Tom Cruise calling Glen Powell the modern version of an Old Hollywood leading man, it’s only fitting that Paul Schrader would chime in.
The “Oh, Canada” writer/director posted on Facebook that Powell is akin to Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, and William Holden in terms of his star power.
“Glen Powell is a movie star in the Holden/Mitchum/Newman mold,” Schrader wrote. “Now he needs to make his ‘Hud.'”
Newman starred in the 1963 Western-tinged drama “Hud,” directed by Martin Ritt, which helped cement the rise of the antihero main characters. Newman’s titular Hud Bannon lives on his family cattle ranch in Texas and battles his nephew (Brandon de Wilde) for the affections of housekeeper Alma (Patricia Neal). Newman gave a performance as an arrogant, abusive alcoholic that earned him an Academy Award Best Actor nomination. The film went on to win Best Cinematography,...

It’s been 21 years since Glen Powell first appeared on the Hollywood scene with his role in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over.
At just 13, Powell made his acting debut in the popular film, a fact that has left many fans amazed as his star continues to rise in Hollywood.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Powell, now 35, reminisced about his first film experience.
“I will never forget that moment,” he shared. “I was 13. I shot my part, and then I hung out behind the camera.
Powell continued, “The entire crew had the most interesting jobs on the planet. You had endless friends on set.”
“And Spy Kids 3-D was arguably our Dune,” he added with a laugh.

The 62nd edition of the New York Film Festival will kick off with RaMell Ross’s “Nickel Boys,” an adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Nickel Boys.”
Film at Lincoln Center made the announcement early Monday and notably didn’t specify a premiere designation for the film, perhaps an indication that “Nickel Boys” will have its world premiere at another festival such as the Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, or Venice Film Festival.

Glen Powell seems to be having a stellar year with the release and positive reception of his action-comedy Hit Man. Now, the Top Gun: Maverick star has given yet another blockbuster with the disaster film Twisters. The film acts as a sequel to Bill Paxton’s 1996 film Twister.
Powell’s new action film reportedly had a phenomenal opening at the weekend box office. The film reportedly received positive reviews for its performances and direction. It has also almost beat Oppenheimer’s opening weekend collections on Christopher Nolan film’s first anniversary.

Update 07/21/24: With Saturday's box office numbers in, "Twisters" has once again blown past estimates! It's now on track for an $80.5 million opening debut, according to Variety. If that number holds once the final count is in on Monday, it will be the third-biggest box office debut of the year, behind only "Inside Out 2" and "Dune: Part Two."
Original article follows.
Nothing is safe from the suck zone of a tornado. It wrecks houses, it steals chickens, and now it has captured the wallets of moviegoers as well. Lee Isaac Chung's "Twisters" is off to a rip-roaring start, grossing $32.2 million on Friday (including Thursday previews) and landing an A- CinemaScore from audience exit polling. Per the Hollywood Reporter, "Twisters" is now on track for a $74.6 million opening weekend, but it wouldn't be at all surprising to see it climb higher.

As far as child actor debuts, it's not quite Hailee Steinfeld in Joel and Ethan Coen's "True Grit." But now that the whole world knows full well that Glen Powell is a bona fide movie star (a fact getting slammed home with a tempestuous fury this week in "Twisters"), we can look back at his first big-screen appearance in Robert Rodriguez's 2003 film "Spy Kids 3: Game Over" and kind of see it.
Powell's big scene arrives early in the movie, when Juni (Daryl Sabata) wanders into a massive arena. It's here Juni meets the Long-fingered Boy (identified as such only in the credits), who zips the Spy Kid up to the top of a tower, throws him into a robotic suit, and informs him he'll be doing battle with a formidable combatant named Demetra (Courtney Jines). The 14-year-old Powell is plenty comfortable on screen, though the broadness...

Time travel. Even if I could go back 15 years and walk around the neighbourhood we’re in right now, that would just be amazing. And then do 30 years, 80 years, 1,000 years; I would never get tired of that. Then I would try to climb a pyramid. I don’t know if they let you do that or if they were guarded. Or go to an early Stevie Wonder concert.
If someone were to write you a lead in your own superhero movie, what would that role’s power be? What would they be called? Would you like a catchphrase?...

Have you got any salt handy? You may want to take a pinch of it for this one. Following recent star turns in Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You, Richard Linklater's Hit Man, and buzzy summer disaster movie blockbuster Twisters, it would be fair to say that Glen Powell is very hot right now. But he could be about to get hotter — quite literally. In a recent interview with CNBC posted to the broadcaster's YouTube channel, Imagine Entertainment co-founder Brian Grazer said not once, but twice, that a remake of Ron Howard's 1991 firefighting classic Backdraft is in the works, with none other than Powell set to star. Check out the interview clip below (feel free to scrub through to 1:20 and 2:20);
Now, as we say, some salt-pinching is required at this stage because neither Powell nor original Backdraft director Howard are on the record as saying this film is happening just yet.

We’re midway through the month of July with only a few more weeks to the summer, and it’s time to get into the next potential mega-blockbuster, “Twisters.” Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Summer blockbusters have existed for as long as Steven Spielberg has been making movies, but it was only in the mid-’90s when studios realized that they could create movies considered “event viewing” that moviegoers would want to rush out to see opening weekend. The Jan De Bont-directed “Twister,” co-written by Michael Crichton (and actually executive produced by Spielberg through his Amblin company), was one of these back in 1996. With everything going the way it is in the world right now, we’re laughing to keep less cheery emotions at bay. At least this bizarre, still-very-much-in-progress century has already produced a slew of spectacular, silly, snarky, and cynical comedies: ready to fire up whenever you need a serotonin burst or distraction thanks to the ever-growing cadre of streaming services.
The pandemic may be in the rearview for the U.S. federal government, but the specter of war, a tortured economy, and human rights issues across the globe have occupied the minds of many instead. So, in desperate need of some humor, we thought it was more important than ever to give our Greatest Comedies of the 21st Century list, originally published in 2017, yet another rethink. Since the list was originally published, we’ve expanded it to 90 entries, including titles released since then that deserved including and other titles we somehow overlooked the first time.

Hirsute actor, comedian, and musician Jack Black has effectively announced the end of the Grammy-winning comedy rock duo Tenacious D in the middle of an international tour. This comes after Black’s partner for 30 years, Kyle Gass, made an off-the-cuff remark about the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, the former president and current Republican presidential nominee.
The July 14 Tenacious D show at the Icc Sydney Theatre in Sydney, Australia happened to land on Gass’s 64th birthday. During a surprise birthday cake presentation, Black prompted Gass to “make a wish.” His response was, “don’t miss Trump next time.” The line got some shocked laughter and a great deal of applause. Black did not “yes, and” the bit, and simply kept things moving.
When the clip went viral, many Trump defenders took to social media to say they were shocked, shocked that anyone could ever make such a crack in public.

Few cinematic moments can burn themselves into an audience’s psyche better than a good sex scene. They can shock, arouse, or simply capture human beauty in ways that cinema is uniquely positioned to do. Sex scenes don’t have to define the movies they appear in, but they’re often the parts you remember the most.
The nature of sex scenes are constantly evolving, as the prevalence of intimacy coordinators and increased concern for performers’ safety in Hollywood is hopefully making regrettable sex scenes a thing of the past. That has allowed sexy cinema to flourish, with plenty of tantalizing movies hitting the multiplex in recent years. With that in mind, it felt like the right time to compile some of the best additions to the sexy film canon.

Jacques Rozier’s French New Wave legacy will now be available on the big screen for modern audiences.
Rozier directed five feature films and a slew of short films across his career. Rozier made his directorial debut in 1962 with “Adieu Philippine,” which was critically acclaimed by the iconic Cahiers du Cinéma. Glen Powell starrer Hit Man has garnered critical acclaim among critics and audiences alike. The movie delves into the life of Powell’s character, a part-time staffer with the New Orleans Police Department who goes undercover as a hitman to catch criminals.

However, the movie did something different which the film director Richard Linklater addressed as he slammed Hollywood’s money-making trick. He also gave an example of Steven Spielberg’s 1998 project, Saving Private Ryan, which also utilized the trick.
Hit Man Director Opened Up About Hollywood’s Money-Making Trick
Hollywood has long been blending the storytelling narrative with facts and fiction, by claiming that movies are based on true stories to enhance its appeal. However, this is something where the Hit Man diverged, as it marketed the movie by stating that it is somewhat based on a true story.

The fourth season of The Boys premiered on June 13, 2024, with its first three episodes marking a significant streaming event. The new season has achieved an impressive Certified Fresh rating of 95%, but it has also faced backlash from fans review-bombing it due to its political undertones.
Despite this, as previously reported, The Boys continues to attract a solid viewership. The premiere saw a 21% increase in viewers compared to previous seasons, although numbers have slightly declined in subsequent weeks. Nonetheless, the series remains robust in terms of its performance.
Recently, the latest Nielsen Ratings were published, confirming our earlier reports about the premiere. Official viewership numbers for the three-episode premiere are now available, and they are undeniably impressive!

The fourth season of The Boys premiered on June 13, 2024, with the first three episodes of the series and it was a major streaming event, as we can confirm. The new season has been Certified Fresh at 95%, which is amazing, but a lot of angry fans are review-bombing the season because of the political undertone of the new season.
Yet, despite that, as we have reported, The Boys have been pulling solid numbers in terms of viewership. We have confirmed how the premiere saw a 21% boost in viewership when compared to previous seasons, and while the numbers have been dropping in the weeks that followed, the series is still doing quite well.

Watching Richard Linklater's 1995 romantic drama "Before Sunrise," it's not hard to grasp why Frenchwoman Céline (Julie Delpy) is taken with the American Jesse (Ethan Hawke), a fellow 20-something traveler she encounters on a train ride back to Paris after visiting her grandmother. With flawless, floppy hair and a sensitive, intellectual manner, he's an alluring mystery waiting to be investigated at a time in her life when she's far more inclined to imagine how chatting up an amicable stranger on a train might lead to something remarkable (as opposed to how it could go profoundly wrong).
Jesse immediately sparks to her too, and they soon find themselves drawn to one another and engrossed in their ensuing conversation. Throwing caution to the wind as only impetuous, gorgeous young people who don't realize just how carefree they really are can, they agree to hit the pause button on their respective lives and...

It’s “Back to the Future” week at Netflix, literally.
Not only is Robert Zemeckis’ 1985 classic time travel comedy the #6 film at the streamer, but one of the decade’s most iconic characters is back with the just-released “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” #1 there.
Picking up theatrical franchises isn’t unprecedented for the streamer. Netflix produced the second “Knives Out” film and is currently in production on the third. Previously, the company took shots at the “Cloverfield” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” series — to little impact. Netflix has continued some Tyler Perry series. But “Beverly Hills Cop” is a whole other level in terms of previous iconic success.
The 1984 original was one of the biggest comedy hits ever released, with an adjusted domestic gross of over $600 million. A fourth film has been in the works for years, with Murphy, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and Netflix joining forces to license “Beverly Hills Cop...

A week after making its first appearance on the streaming charts, former Showtime drama Your Honor has rocketed to No. 1 overall.
The series starring Bryan Cranston nearly tripled its viewing time on Netflix and Paramount+ in the week of June 3-9, grabbing 1.53 billion minutes (vs. 544 million the week before) and bumping Bridgerton out of the top overall spot. Your Honor had its Netflix premiere on May 31.
Bridgerton, meanwhile, fell by about 42 percent week to week and finished with 806 million minutes of viewing — a figure that’s likely to go up in the next set of rankings, which will include the release of the Netflix show’s final season three episodes. It finished ninth overall and third among original series, behind Eric (926 million minutes of viewing) and Sweet Tooth (874 million).

Like it or not, the state of the movie business is at a point where the Best Adapted Screenplay conversation starts around which major sequels are Oscar contenders. Even with its tepid critical response, it is hard not to throw “Inside Out 2” on the list when the first one received a Best Original Screenplay nomination and won Best Animated Feature in 2016. Plus, the Pixar film has been the most successful 2024 theatrical release so far, coming out at a time where box-office analysts were ready to...

Eddie Murphy cheerfully shoots his way through California’s wrong ‘uns in a charming revival of a 40-year-old franchise. Here’s our Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F review.
As the first Beverly Hills Cop movie to be released after its iconic theme was covered by Crazy Frog, Axel F perhaps lands on Netflix with more baggage than most.
It’s landing straight on Netflix, for a start, in a period where the streamer’s original output hasn’t been exactly glowing (Richard Linklater’s Hit Man being a notable exception). Action-comedy The Fall Guy just failed to set the box office alight, and after years of sequels, reboots, and sequel-reboots, it’s easy to imagine that we’re approaching peak franchise-fatigue. Was anyone really asking for a Beverly Hills Cop 4?
The answer might well be no, but, now that it’s here, I’m happy to report that Beverly Hills Cop...

And just like that, 2024 is already half over. Crazy, isn’t it? It feels like Christmas was just a minute ago, but here we are in the middle of summertime. Before we know it, the fall festivals will open up, the awards race will begin, and people will start debating the year’s best movies.
But here’s the thing – whenever people start talking about the best movies of the year, they always neglect all of the films that came out in the first half of the year. Studios know this, which is why high-profile, prestigious movies always bow in the fourth quarter of the year. So, to give these movies a bit of a spotlight, we here at JoBlo have decided to list the 10 best movies of 2024…so far (in no particular order).

Glen Powell is having a moment. Propelled by the box office success of "Anyone But You," and its subsequent streaming domination, the most handsome man you've ever seen is slowly taking over Hollywood. His Richard Linklater-directed Netflix film "Hitman" quickly conquered the streamer's charts when it debuted in June, and Powell will soon guide us all into the eye of the suck zone with the upcoming blockbuster legacy sequel "Twisters." Soon after, Powell will face what might be his biggest test yet in Edgar Wright's upcoming adaptation of "The Running Man." But considering the man's resilience — his first film role was in the more-than 20-year-old "Spy Kids 3" — he should be up to the challenge.
It hasn't been an easy road from "Spy Kids" to leading man, however. Take "Misconduct" for instance. You've likely never heard of this 2016 legal thriller, which is probably for the best considering the...

Based on Skip Hollandsworth’s 2001 article written for Texas Monthly magazine (which is still available to read online), Hit Man is a “somewhat true story” inspired by the life of Gary Johnson. The film introduces audiences to Johnson (Glen Powell) as a university professor teaching his class about how life is worth taking risks, something he does not put into practice in his stationary life.
Working part-time with the New Orleans Police Department, Johnson moonlights as a fake hitman for the purposes of police stings. Under the guise of the suave Ron, Gary meets with Madison (Adria Arjona), a potential client who wishes to escape her abusive husband. The professor breaks protocol to help the woman make a new start instead, and finds himself falling for her.

Jessica Alba reigned over Netflix last week with her latest film Trigger Warning, which debuted with 25.7M views, making it the streamer’s most-watched title of the week and No. 1 for English-language films.
In second place among English-language films was the animated fare Ultraman: Rising with 7.9M views. Meanwhile, Richard Linklater’s Hit Man remains Top 10 material, this week coming in sixth place with 4.4M views.
On the TV front, Bridgerton is still dominating. In the first full week since Season 3, Part 2 hit Netflix, the third installment collectively gathered another 16.5M views. It’s not entirely surprising to see the viewership for the second half of Season 3 dip versus the first half, though it does indicate the show might have lost some of its audience in the month-long wait for the final four episodes.
However, audiences are still gravitating toward the entire Bridgerton-verse still. Season 1 of the Regency-era series came in at No.

Sideshow and Janus Films have snapped up U.S. distribution rights to Chinese master filmmaker Jia Zhangke’s latest feature Caught by the Tides, which premiered to rave reviews at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The two distributors said they will “release the film exclusively in theaters in the coming months.”
Caught by the Tides is composed almost entirely of improvisational footage Jia shot across China over nearly 25 years with his troupe of longtime collaborators. In an interview at Cannes, the director told The Hollywood Reporter that he began to sculpt a feature from the hundreds of hours of footage he had accumulated during the quiet days of China’s long, three-year pandemic shutdown.
THR‘s lead critic summed up the resulting film’s innovative narrative and formal approaches by writing that it “ebbs and flows like poetry.”

John Krasinski’s “If” (Paramount) needs strong post-theatrical results to make it a success. Initial results from PVOD ($19.99 rental), which reached #1 right away at both iTunes and Fandango, suggest it is headed in the right direction.
In the short term, it might be able to sustain that pace; its main competition will be this week’s release of the underperforming “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” More critical is whether it can sustain multiple weeks at higher levels. With a $110 million before-marketing cost, $180 million in worldwide gross needs supplementing.
Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” is sustaining its run. Netflix’s $20 million worldwide acquisition, after an above-average 10 days as #1 on its top 10 movie viewing chart, is still at #2. “Trigger Warning,” a far less-acclaimed Netflix original, is currently #1. The action/thriller title, which stars Jessica Alba and is the American debut for Indonesian director Mouly Surya, was filmed nearly three years ago.

In the short term, it might be able to sustain that pace; its main competition will be this week’s release of the underperforming “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” More critical is whether it can sustain multiple weeks at higher levels. Mubi has unveiled next month’s streaming lineup, including Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s five-part series Penance, Kit Zauhar’s new release This Closeness along with her debut feature Actual People, a pair of films by Paul Schrader, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, Luke Lorentzen’s stellar documentary A Still Small Voice, Alex Ross Perry’s Queen of Earth, and more.
In his review of This Closeness earlier this month, Ethan Vestby said, “The film is made with a great deal of formal control, and even though the low stakes and small scale will have it be compared to mumblecore films, this is far sleeker than the average Joe Swanberg joint of yesteryear: long takes, a fixed camera, strategic employment of close-ups, and a rich soundscape (the audio emanating from outside the window of traffic and birdsong is instantly identifiable to anyone living in a city).”

Richard Linklater’s crime comedy Hit Man landed on Netflix on May 24, 2024. With rising star Glen Powell at the forefront, and Linklater behind the lens, this tightly-paced movie quickly became a hit with audiences. It has received widespread critical acclaim and many are talking about the film’s true story elements. The film focuses on Gary Johnson (Glen Powell), a college professor who has a rather distinct side hustle. By day – he teaches. By night – he moonlights as a hitman for his local police department, well, kind of. Hit Man blends crime, comedy, suspense and romance in a...

This article contains spoilers for "Hit Man."
Netflix acquired Richard Linklater's comedy "Hit Man" out of its screening at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and the choice seems to have paid off for them. /Film has been a little more down on the movie than most (read our review here), but "Hit Man" soon hit #1 on Netflix's streaming charts after its June 7 debut on the platform. The streamer is probably feeling pretty good now after many other studios passed up the chance to shepherd "Hit Man" to completion.
"Hit Man" is loosely based on a true story, first told in a 2001 Texas Monthly article written by Skip Hollandsworth about Gary Johnson, a Houston community college professor who had a movie-worthy side-gig; he played the part of a professional assassin during police sting operations. "Hit Man" (which moves its story to Louisiana) stars Glen Powell as Gary, portrayed as a...

As Gary Johnson, Glen Powell stars as a professor who moonlights for the police, pretending to be a hitman to lure unsuspecting would-be criminals into sting operations. This intriguing premise sets up Richard Linklater’s latest film, Hit Man, which blends elements of thriller and romance. Character transformations of Gary Johnson The movie’s portrayal of Gary Johnson as both an unassuming academic and a convincing contract killer has drawn mixed reactions from fans. Glen Powell’s quote sheds light on his character’s range: Gary is a man who’s moving through the world without an identity, so to speak… Despite this in-depth character...

If ever a soundtrack helped boost a movie’s legacy, it’s that of Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused, a non-stop party album that encapsulated not just the era in which the movie is set but the essence of the film. But despite there being around 30 songs in Dazed and Confused, Linklater had trouble securing rights to one Led Zeppelin track, leading to him to say he would be boycotting singer Robert Plant for life.
Interestingly, when coming up with the perfect Led Zeppelin song to use, Linklater didn’t want “Dazed and Confused” itself but rather “Rock and Roll.” As he recounted in his “Dazed by Days” journal, in the spring of 1993, Linklater got permission from Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page after sending him a five-minute video of non-stop begging. But in July, singer Robert Plant denied the use of any Zeppelin tunes. As Linklater wrote, “We’re out of time,...
