As Twisters rips through theaters and updates a nearly 30-year-old franchise, the original movie’s creator is reflecting on how the movie got made.
Director Jan de Bont recalled the “goddamned real” effects that went into 1996’s Twister and “ultimately decided whether the movie was made” as the sequel premieres in theaters.
“We weren’t sure at the time if we could even make the movie, because of the difficulty of the effects,” he told Vulture. “And it took a long time — the hardware and the software had to be designed for the movie. It was like two steps forward and one step backward, but it was exciting.
“One of the scenes we did as a test, to see if we could make it believable, was the opening with the farm and the family going into the shelter. Another test we did was a shot from the inside of a car,...

“Twisters” is getting ready to shake up the summer box office.
The disaster movie, a sequel to the 1996 classic “Twister,” has made $10.7 million in Thursday previews at the box office. The Universal film, starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos as storm chasers, is expected to open between $50 million and $55 million this weekend.
“Twisters” comes with a $155 million price tag, so it’ll need to storm the global box office to turn a profit. Warner Bros. is distributing the film internationally, where it’s made $X million so far. It will open in larger markets like France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom this weekend.
Released 28 years after the original film, “Twisters” stars Powell as Tyler Owens, a popular storm chaser on the internet, and Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper, a meteorologist and ex-tornado chaser who is haunted by a major storm from her past. With her colleague Javi (Ramos...

Before Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, there were Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, who starred in the original high-octane thriller Twister (1996) as storm chasers.
Romantic tension similar, but also different, to that between the main characters in Twisters unfolded in the original film. The new installment also nods to the reboot in several ways. The conflict within the two films is also similar. Twisters looks to touch down to a $50 million start at the box office opening weekend.
With Universal’s sequel directed by Lee Isaac Chung about to hit theaters, some may be wondering where to watch the original natural disaster film.
Where Can I Watch ‘Twister’? Is It Streaming?
Twister, which came out in 1996, is available to stream on Max as well as with the Hulu and Max bundle. It is also available to rent on Prime Video, Apple TV+ and more.

In a moment of great American tension and yearning for comity, Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters doesn’t exactly arrive like a gift from the heavens, but it sure does its damndest to take you back to the “simpler” times of ‘90s high-concept popcorn thrills and goofy grins. And the high-concept at play here is very goofy too.

Smith, Twisters is a disaster action thriller film and it follows the story of Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser who gets roped into chasing storms once again by her friend Javi to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. Twisters stars Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane. So, if you loved the surviving thriller, disaster, and a bit of romantic element in Twisters here are some similar movies you could watch next.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
For nearly as long as movies have been a form of mass entertainment, the disaster genre has brought excitement and thrills to the big screen, dating back to 1933's "Deluge," which picks up in the aftermath of a massive earthquake in New York. At some point, these films became big business, commanding big budgets in Hollywood. Look no further than 1998, when both "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact" opened mere months from one another, offering radically different takes on the whole asteroid colliding with the Earth scenario. The '90s also gifted us a very important entry in this enduring genre in the form of director Jan de Bont's "Twister."

1996’s Twister had one heck of a cast of ‘90s and ‘80s faces. There was Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton and Alan Ruck and Cary Elwes and Jami Gertz. And then there was one who stole every scene he was in: Philip Seymour Hoffman. Hoffman had been in a handful of movies prior – with notable performances in Scent of a Woman and Nobody’s Fool – but he was still waiting for his break. This undoubtedly came with Twister, which director Jan de Bont remembers as giving him the gift of working with Hoffman.
Speaking with IndieWire, de Bont recalled Hoffman – who wasn’t yet 30 at the time – being more of a force on Twister than his demeanor suggested. “Way before he became a big star. And I’m so happy that I was able to work with him. He’s a magical actor because, if you see him, he’s a...

“Twister” was the second highest-grossing film at the box office in 1996, so its enduring popularity shouldn’t be a shock. But still, the profound nature of its impact over time — there’s a museum dedicated to the film in its shooting location of Wakita, Oklahoma; a noted uptick in meteorology majors in the late ’90s directly attributed to the film; and stormchasers paying tribute en masse to star Bill Paxton upon his death in 2017 — astounds even its director, Jan de Bont.
“It’s amazing how that happened,” the Dutch filmmaker told IndieWire in an interview timed to the release of the film on 4K Uhd Blu-ray. “And how quickly it happened. I think ‘Twister’ simply made people more interested in weather phenomena and it’s even why there are so many more weather shows on TV.”

Fresh off the 30th anniversary of his all-time great actioner Speed, filmmaker Jan de Bont is now turning his attention to his highly successful sophomore effort, Twister. On July 9, the Bill Paxton- and Helen Hunt-led disaster film will be made available on 4K Ultra HD for the very first time, whetting the audience’s appetite for July 19’s long-awaited sequel, Twisters. The original 1996 film allowed the Dutch director to pick up where he left off with Speed and deliver yet another intense thrill ride that swapped Los Angeles freeways for Oklahoma highways. And instead of a bus that’s trying to outrun its own ticking time bomb, Paxton and Hunt’s storm-chaser characters doggedly pursue immensely powerful tornadoes that destroy everything in their ever-changing path.
For de Bont, it’s rather bittersweet to look back on his 1995 production due to the 2014 and 2017 deaths of co-stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paxton,...

When Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters opens in theaters on July 19, the reimagined version of Jan de Bont’s 1996 classic could make a $50 million debut. According to analysts, a summer heatwave is heading our way, which could bring audiences to air-conditioned theaters. Between beating the heat with a bucket of buttery popcorn and an overpriced fountain drink, walk-up business could also play a part in Twisters whipping up dollars on its first weekend at the box office.
For a while, analysts predicted a slow summer at cinemas. However, movies like Inside Out 2 ($800M) and Bad Boys: Ride or Die ($294M) have reinvigorated interest in returning to theaters, leading number crunchers to take another look at their box office crystal ball. While Twisters has a lot going for it, tornado warnings across parts of the United States could have people opposed to watching weather-related carnage on the silver screen. My prediction?...

The Bear has to be one of the best series ever created. The FX comedy-drama series is intense, funny, tragic, and has some of the most beautiful-looking food I’ve ever seen. Created by Christopher Storer, The Bear follows the story of Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, an award-winning working in one of the best restaurants in the United States, as he moves back to Chicago to run his family-owned sandwich shop after a tragic incident. The Bear aired its third season recently, and I’m happy to say that the series is getting better with every new season. We are also happy that The Bear was renewed for a fourth season ahead of its Season 3 premiere. The Bear stars Jeremy Allen White in the lead role, with Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Abby Elliott, Matty Matheson, Jon Bernthal, Oliver Platt, L-Boy, and Edwin Lee Gibson starring in supporting. So, if you love The Bear’s intensity,...

HBO’s Succession surely cemented its place among the most celebrated shows in recent television history. Premiering in 2018, the show went on for four seasons before ending in 2023. Throughout the four seasons, it continued to garner attention, receiving critical acclaim and winning multiple awards.

Before the debut episode of Friends aired on NBC in 1994, director Jimmy Burrows took the cast on a trip to Las Vegas.
"He handed us each a couple hundred bucks and said, ‘Now go into the casino and go gamble because this is the last time you’ll be able to walk into a casino anonymously,’" Jennifer Aniston recalled in a 2019 interview with Ellen DeGeneres.
"And we had no clue what he was talking about. And sure enough, that was the last time we were able [do that].”
Such was the power of network television in the '90s.
Six unknown young actors could transform overnight into a half-dozen A-listers, entirely on the strength of one popular primetime sitcom.
Eventually, those unknowns would become the highest-paid actors in the history of television, pocketing over $1 million per episode.
Years later, along with costar Reese Witherspoon, Aniston would break her own record, earning $2 million...

It's been 28 years since Jan De Bont's "Twister" ripped through theaters and whipped up a $496 million worldwide gross. In the meantime, it's become a weekend cable mainstay, where viewers can tune out its wafer-thin plot and simply enjoy the foul weather spectacle. It's far from a classic, but its visual prowess is undeniable, and its colorful cast of storm chasers led by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt seem to be having a ball. Any film that includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Jami Gertz, Todd Field, and Lois Smith is bound to be fun on some level.
So why has it taken so long for Universal to make a sequel to the second-highest-grossing film (domestically) of 1996?
"Twisters" didn't exactly have a stormy development process, but it did go through a couple of iterations over the last four years. Joseph Kosinski was attached to direct in early 2020. When that fell through,...

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock might be down for Speed 3.
The Speed stars stopped by the 50 Mph podcast to discuss the 1994 action-thriller, alongside their fellow co-stars Jeff Daniels and Alan Ruck.
When asked about a possible threequel, the Matrix star said, “I mean, you know — we’d freakin’ knock it out of the park.” Bullock chimed in, saying that she may be up for it, “Before I die, before I leave this planet, I do think that Keanu and I need to do something in front of the camera. Are we, you know, in wheelchairs or with walkers? Maybe. Are we on little scooters at Disneyland?”
Reeves echoed her sentiment, adding that it can’t be forced, despite their seeming interest. “It does feel like there is a siren call to it, like there’s something that wasn’t done,” he said. “I would love to work with you again before our eyes close.

“Star Trek” fans got a couple fascinating details in a March 27 report by Variety on the future of the franchise on Paramount+. The biggest for sure is that the character of Rachel Garrett, the first female captain of the USS Enterprise, will be appearing in the “Section 31” direct-to-Paramount+ movie that’s going to star Michelle Yeoh.
The actress Kacey Rohl will be playing Garrett, who was the captain of the Enterprise-c in the first half of the 24th century and was the subject of one of the most beloved “Next Generation” episodes ever: “Yesterday’s Enterprise” (she was played by Tricia O’Neal in the original episode).
That time-travel episode was about how the Enterprise-c was ripped out of history at a battle with the Romulans where it was supposed to have perished; instead the ship was hurled 22 years into the future where it meets Picard’s Enterprise, the Enterprise-d. As...

Earlier this month, we shared the news that Anchor Bay Entertainment – which used to be a major player in the horror world back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, when they gave DVD releases to films like the Evil Dead trilogy, George A. Romero’s Dead trilogy, the Sleepaway Camp franchise, The Hills Have Eyes, The Car, Maniac, Prom Night, some of the Hellraisers, Halloweens, and much more – is being revived, with their first two releases puppet horror film Abruptio and Dinner with Leatherface, a documentary that looks at the life, career, and legacy of original Leatherface actor Gunnar Hansen. Now we’ve learned that the new Anchor Bay has acquired the North American rights to the horror/comedy Crust, with the plan being to release it sometime later this year.

Alan Ruck has been playing the role of Connor Roy in HBO’s “Succession” and getting his due credit. However, it all began for him with 1986’s all-time classic “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. He played the nervous, fast-talking Cameron Frye in John Hughes’ classic. He reluctantly got dragged along on Ferris’ epic adventure, stealing his dad’s Ferrari and causing delightful mayhem throughout Chicago.
A still from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Many years later, Alan Ruck might have a bone to pick with someone. Despite recently bringing the character back to life, it seems like Ruck does not recall doing any such incident. The reason why he has seemingly forgotten reprising his character is definitely worth knowing!

Universal’s Oppenheimer took took the top prize at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning best cast in a film — while also taking the prizes for lead and supporting actor.

The stars of Breaking Bad gathered Saturday for a profanity-laden reunion to present the trophy for best drama series ensemble to the cast of Succession at the 2024 SAG Awards.
Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Dean Norris and R.J. Mitte were among those gathered to represent Breaking Bad, celebrating the show’s win in the category 10 years ago. After Gunn began spelling out the word “ensemble” by explaining that the “E” stands for “excitement,” Odenkirk quipped, “And the letter N. N stands for ‘no’ — no fucking way I’m going to do this cheesy thing where you say each letter of the word. I’m not doing it.”
Alan Ruck, who played Connor Roy on Succession, accepted the award on behalf of his fellow castmembers. “One last hurrah, I think,” Ruck said. “Right now, you’re looking at some of the luckiest people on the planet...

The 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place in Los Angeles on Saturday evening, with not too many surprises in the mix leading up to Oscar night on March 10.
“Oppenheimer” and Cillian Murphy got another Oscar boost, picking up the ensemble award and leading actor in a motion picture for the title role after Murphy won the BAFTA in the same category last weekend. Lily Gladstone won leading actress for “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
So far this awards season, “Oppenheimer” has won everything it was expected to win – and at the SAG Awards, it added a big prize for which it hadn’t been the strong favorite, taking down “Barbie” and “American Fiction” to win an award that had supplied evidence of an Oscar upset in the making a few times in the past. In this case, the ensemble win for “Oppenheimer” suggests that any thoughts of a...

Who’s ready for a joyride? The long-rumored Ferris Bueller’s Day Off spin-off, Sam and Victor’s Day Off, is ready to twist and shout with David Katzenberg at the helm. According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, Katzenberg is buckling up for a film featuring the two mischievous valets who borrowed Cameron’s father’s Ferrari to rip through the streets of Chicago joyously! In his newsletter, Sneider says the duo’s adventure takes place on a single day, with Sam and Victor grabbing life by the short and curlies for a fast-paced tear through city streets.
Sam and Victor’s Day Off will be Katzenberg’s feature directorial debut after helming numerous television episodes for various shows. Famously known in the industry for directing 41 episodes of The Goldbergs, Katzenberg’s director credits extend to Young Rock, 9-1-1: Lone Star, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Schooled, Riverdale, and more.

We learned last week that iconic label Anchor Bay Entertainment is coming back to life here in 2024, and founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz have announced this morning that they have acquired the North American rights to the horror/comedy Crust, which will have its release later this year.
Directed by Sean Whalen (The People Under The Stairs), who co-wrote the film with Jim Wald, Crust stars Whalen, Daniel Roebuck (Rob Zombie’s The Munsters), Rebekah Kennedy (Two Witches), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), and Ricky Dean Logan (Back to the Future II), with Shawntay Dalon (“Detroiters”) and Alan Ruck (“Succession”).
“As someone who grew up watching Sean on screen, I am thrilled to be in business with him,” says Zambeck. “The fact that it’s on a witty and clever film like this – one that displays such a mastery of tone – makes it so much sweeter. I can’t wait...

In a deal that closed at the EFM over the weekend revived genre label Anchor Bay Entertainment has acquired North American rights to the horror comedy Crust featuring a cast of genre veterans and Succession star Alan Ruck.
Sean Whalen, who starred in Wes Craven’s The People Under The Stairs, makes his feature directorial debut on the story, and stars as Vegas Winters, a depressed washed-up child actor who fled Tinseltown and owns and lives in a rundown laundromat.

Comedies have always been Richard Kind‘s bread and butter. With memorable roles in shows like Spin City, Mad About You, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Other Two, and now the Night Court reboot, the 67-year-old star has long been one of the industry’s best character actors. But he tells TV Insider that he craves his chance at a dramatic turn like his Spin City co-star/longtime friend Alan Ruck, who showed his dramatic chops in the incomparable HBO series Succession. After being “raised” on the original Night Court and long admiring John Larroquette‘s performance as Dan Fielding, Kind made his Night Court debut in Season 2 Episode 7 on Tuesday, February 13 on NBC. He plays Sy Feldman, a disgraced Broadway producer who’s in legal trouble over faulty investments in his failed shows. The character is a lot like Max Bialystok of The Producers, whom Kind played on Broadway in 2004 opposite Ruck as Leo Bloom.

“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

On the morning of January 23, 2024, actor Gary Graham, star of the "Alien Nation" TV series, the cult classic "Robot Jox," and multiple-time "Star Trek" supporting player, passed away at the age of 74. Graham had a prolific acting career, appearing in single episodes of many of the hottest TV shows of his day, including "Starsky & Hutch," "The Incredible Hulk," Knots Landing," "CHiPs," "T.J. Hooker," "Hunter," "M.A.N.T.I.S.," "Diagnosis Murder," "Ally McBeal," "Jag," and "Nip/Tuck." He had an easy demeanor, allowing him to play comedic affable characters just as well as intense, serious ones.
Trekkies likely know Graham best for playing Soval on "Star Trek: Enterprise." Soval was the snippy Vulcan ambassador who oversaw Earth's very, very slow transition from post-war ruin to a thriving society ready for space exploration. In the timeline of "Star Trek," humanity discovers warp-speed flight while the world is recovering from nuclear devastation. On the very first Earth warp flight,...

The Succession cast reunited a day after their big wins at the Emmys and talked about how they learned about the fate that Brian Cox’s character would have in the HBO drama series.
In a conversation with moderator Seth Meyers, the cast opened up about when and how they were told Logan Roy was getting killed off early on in Season 4.
Matthew Macfadyen said he “held out until Episode 5” of the final season to find out about who would succeed Logan on the show.
J. Smith-Cameron jumped in to say that producers like Jesse Armstrong and Mark Mylod “warned” the cast in groups ahead of Episode 3 (“Connor’s Wedding”) about what would happen to Logan (Cox).
“Wasn’t it the read-through?” Alan Ruck questioned.
“There was a Zoom,” Macfadyen clarified.
“Oh! You weren’t invited, Alan,” Smith-Cameron joked.

Twenty-four hours after a big night at the Emmys, which included a win for best drama series, the cast of Succession reunited for a rare Q&a discussion in Los Angeles.
Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, Nicholas Braun, J. Smith Cameron, Alan Ruck, creator Jesse Armstrong and director Mark Mylod took part in the conversation on the Paramount lot, with Seth Meyers serving as moderator and joking that Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook and Alexander Skarsgård were not in attendance as they “are in production in a spin-off of Succession that nobody else here is in.”
Early on in the chat, Cox recalled Armstrong telling him that his character Logan Roy would die midway through the fourth and final season, teasing, “I was given the ultimate short shrift. ‘Get the fuck off the set. We don’t want to see you anymore, we’ve had enough of you, you’ve...

The 2023 Emmy Awards finally took place on Monday night, with series like The Bear, Beef and Succession winning big.
The ceremony, hosted by Anthony Anderson and held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, was postponed for months due to the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes. Thus, to be considered for an award, a television show, limited series or made-for-tv film must have been released between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023.
The National Active Members of the Television Academy voted on the awards from August 18 to August 28, 2023.
Succession walked away with seven wins for its final season, including Best Drama and recognition for actors Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen. The show also received awards for Best Directing for a Drama Series for Mark Mylod and Best Writing for a Drama Series for Jesse Armstrong.

In a normal year, the 2023 Emmy Awards would have actually taken place in 2023. But last year was anything but normal in Hollywood, and the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes caused the award ceremony’s postponement to January 15, 2024.
Fans of Succession, The Bear, and Beef had a lot to celebrate as Emmy voters threw most of the awards in their direction. Succession and The Bear tied with six wins each, and Beef wasn’t far behind with five.
Highlights included Christina Applegate’s surprise appearance on stage to a standing ovation, Carol Burnett presenting to Quinta Brunson (the first Black actress to win as Lead Actress in a Comedy since 1981), and Niecy Nash-Betts’ powerful acceptance speech for Dahmer. There were also cast reunions and Sir Elton John finally received the E portion of Egot for his Farewell From Dodger Stadium special.

Way back in (checks notes) July last year, we reported on the Emmy nominations, noting that the strikes could delay it. Welp, delay it they did, and the 2023 ceremony has just happened in Los Angeles on Monday night. The ceremony, hosted by actor and comedian Anthony Anderson, had little reference to the strikes, but did dig back into TV history given that it was the 75th ceremony. Recent history, though, was more on voters' minds as Beef, Succession and The Bear continued their small screen awards domination.
Succession and The Bear nabbed six trophies each across acting, directing and writing categories, while Beef took home five. Other winners included Jennifer Coolidge (for The White Lotus) and Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story's Niecy Nash-Betts.

Kieran Culkin quipped to his wife onstage that he’s ready to grow their family following his first-ever Emmy win on Monday night’s 2023 Emmys.
“My beautiful wife, Jazz, thank you for sharing your life with me and giving me two amazing kids, Kinsey Sioux and Wilder Wolf, I love you so many and so much,” Culkin said from the stage. “And Jazz: I want more. You said maybe if I win.”
His joke was met with laughter from the theater as Jazz also smiled and laughed in her seat.
Culkin received the Emmy award for best actor in a drama series for his performance as Roman Roy in Succession, which released its fourth and final season in 2023.
