“American Rust” has been canceled again.
Amazon Prime Video has opted not to move forward with a third season of the series, Variety has confirmed. Amazon had picked up a second season of the series after it was canceled at its original network home, Showtime, in January 2022. It was originally slated to air on Freevee before it was shifted to Prime Video. All 10 episodes of the second season dropped on March 28.
The first season of the show was based on the Philipp Meyer novel of the same name. Season 2 of “American Rust” was officially titled “American Rust: Broken Justice.” Jeff Daniels led the series along with Maura Tierney, David Alvarez, Alex Neustaedter, Julie Mayorga, Mark Pellegrino, Rob Yang, and Kyle Beltran. American Rust has been canceled for a second time. Prime Video has opted not to renew the drama starring Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney for a third season, Deadline has confirmed. The news comes four months after Season 2, titled American Rust: Broken Justice, premiered on the platform and had a quiet run.
The cancellation was foreshadowed by the recent casting of Tierney as a new series regular on NBC’s Law & Order.
American Rust has a long history. It initially was ordered straight-to-series at USA Network in November 2017, but a few months later, the network opted not to move forward with it. At the time, sources said the order was contingent on the producers finding a big star for the lead, which didn’t happen. It then moved to Showtime, with Daniels attached to star and executive produce, where it was picked up and aired for one season. The...

“Twisters” is sweeping audiences off their couches and into the theaters.
The standalone follow-up to “Twister” (1996) grossed over $80 million in its first weekend and was the third highest-grossing film of 2024.
Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos lead the disaster film as a ragtag group of storm chasers. Jones plays Kate Carter, a once disaster-seeker turned to corporate weather pro, while Powell plays Tyler Owens, a viral “tornado wrangler.” The two team up with Javi, a longtime friend of Kate’s played by Anthony Ramos, to tackle the biggest twister Oklahoma’s seen in generations.
The cast also features some newcomers but (spoiler alert!) no cameo from Helen Hunt. For the complete “Twisters” cast and character guide, keep reading.

Spoiler Warning: This story contains spoilers for “Twisters,” now playing in theaters.
“Twisters” director Lee Isaac Chung was well aware that people might be upset about the ending of the disaster thriller — namely the fact that its hero Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her tornado-wrangling knight in tight Levi’s, Tyler Owens (Glen Powell) don’t kiss at the end of the movie.
“If you talk to my 13-year-old niece, her uncle made a huge mistake,” Chung tells Variety.
Indeed, for more than an hour and a half of the film’s two-hour runtime, the tension builds between Kate and Tyler. From the first tip of his cowboy hat and their early verbal jabs (he nicknames her “city girl” and she pokes fun at him putting his face on a t-shirt), their chemistry is evident.

Maura Tierney is returning to NBC—and Thursday nights, albeit two hours earlier than ER aired during its 15-season run. (Tierney joined the drama in Season 6 and left in Season 15.) Tierney has joined Law & Order in the series regular role as the new lieutenant. The casting for this character has been expected, given that Camryn Manheim‘s final episode was the Season 23 finale. We’ll have to wait to see just what kind of lieutenant Tierney’s character is (as well as anything we learn about her off the clock), but we do know from the show’s history she’ll be interacting mostly with Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) and Riley (Reid Scott)—and we expect her to clash with Da Baxter (Tony Goldwyn)—who took over following Sam Waterson‘s Jack McCoy resigning—and ADAs Price (Hugh Dancy) and Maroun (Odelya Halevi). It was announced less than a week before...

ER alumna Maura Tierney is returning to NBC, joining the cast of Law & Order as a new series regular for the upcoming 24th season.
The announcement follows the departure of series regular Camryn Manheim as Lieutenant Kate Dixon at the end of Season 23.
Details of Tierney’s character are not being revealed other than she will portray a new lieutenant on the Dick Wolf procedural.
Manheim departed the series following Sam Waterston, who announced his exit in February as District Attorney Jack McCoy. Tony Goldwyn later joined as the new district attorney.
Law & Order is a police procedural and legal drama that gives viewers a look at a case—inspired by real-life crimes “ripped from the headlines”— from the Pov of the police and the prosecutors. It’s the longest-running law enforcement series on TV.

Law & Order is putting a new cop on the case for its 24th season.
Two-time Emmy nominee Maura Tierney is joining the NBC drama’s ensemble in the fall, playing an NYPD lieutenant. Her casting comes after Camryn Manheim departed the series after three seasons of playing Lt. Kate Dixon.
Tierney is the second new(ish) castmember on the long-running crime procedural; Tony Goldwyn joined L&o midway through last season after the departure of the show’s longest-serving castmember, Sam Waterston.
The actress has starred in two NBC series previously: NewsRadio from 1995-99 and ER from 1999-2009. She earned her first Emmy nomination for playing Abby Lockhart on ER in 2001. She also has a history, albeit a brief one, with Law & Order, having guest-starred in an episode of the show’s second season in 1991.
Tierney is currently co-starring in Twisters, which tore up the box office in its opening weekend.

The hot streak at the summer box office remains alive and well as director Lee Isaac Chung's "Twisters" did much, much better on opening weekend than anyone expected it to. The standalone sequel to the classic 1996 summer blockbuster "Twister" had been expected to open in the $50 million range based on early tracking numbers. Some analysts, however, had predicted that the disaster flick would open much higher. That proved to be true, so much so that Chung's crowd-pleaser has found its way into the record books with the biggest opening weekend ever for a disaster movie in the U.S.
Universal Pictures' "Twisters" took in an estimated $80.5 million domestically, easily topping the charts this past weekend. With that, it breaks a very specific record held by Roland Emmerich's "The Day After Tomorrow," which hit theaters 20 years ago in 2004. That film opened to $68.7 million domestically and, ever since, that...

The Following Contains Major Spoilers From Twisters.
Although Twisters is striking up all kinds of nostalgia for fans of the original, the sequel attempts to do away with the romantic comedy conventions of the ’90s.
Director Lee Isaac Chung explained why, although it was filmed, he didn’t end up using a shot of Daisy Edgar-Jones‘ Kate Cooper and Glen Powell‘s Tyler Owens kissing in the final scene after he runs through an airport to find her.
“I feel like audiences are in a different place now in terms of wanting a kiss or not wanting a kiss. I actually tried the kiss, and it was very polarizing — and it’s not because of their performance of the kiss,” Chung told Entertainment Weekly. “This [no-kiss shot] was the other option that I had filmed on the day, and I got to say, ‘I like it better. I think it’s a better ending.

“Twisters” blasted off at the domestic box office with a huge $80.5 million, but one of the biggest talking points from film on social media is for something that didn’t actually make it into the movie. Set footage depicting stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell filming a climactic scene in which their characters share a passionate kiss went viral in the days leading up to the “Twisters” release, but fans were soon left devastated by the kiss not making it into the theatrical cut.
“I think it’s a Spielberg note, wasn’t it?” Edgar-Jones told Collider about the cut kiss, revealing that executive producer Steven Spielberg opted for the kiss not to be shown in the movie. “I think it stops the film feeling too clichéd, actually. I think there’s something really wonderful about it feeling like there’s a continuation. This isn’t the end of their story.

As Twisters rips through theaters and updates a nearly 30-year-old franchise, the original movie’s creator is reflecting on how the movie got made.
Director Jan de Bont recalled the “goddamned real” effects that went into 1996’s Twister and “ultimately decided whether the movie was made” as the sequel premieres in theaters.
“We weren’t sure at the time if we could even make the movie, because of the difficulty of the effects,” he told Vulture. “And it took a long time — the hardware and the software had to be designed for the movie. It was like two steps forward and one step backward, but it was exciting.
“One of the scenes we did as a test, to see if we could make it believable, was the opening with the farm and the family going into the shelter. Another test we did was a shot from the inside of a car,...

The much anticipated standalone sequel to the 1996 Jan de Bont film Twister is finally here and seems to be a hit among the audience and the critics. Directed by Academy Award Nominee Lee Isaac Chung from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, Twisters has all the destruction, mayhem, and cool characters you want in a film like this.
Twisters follows the story of Kate, a former storm chaser, who is lured back into the fields for one last time by her friend, Javi, to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. As she begins working with Javi, Kate meets Tyler Owens, a charming but reckless social media superstar who built his fanbase by chasing storms. As storm season gets more dangerous, Kate, Tyler, and the people in their team find themselves fighting against a storm to survive.

[Editor’s note: The following story contains mild spoilers for “Twisters”]
Lee Isaac Chung’s “Twisters” hits theaters this weekend, 28 years after the release of Jan de Bont’s original “Twister.”
But while the classic branding will no doubt inspire some disaster movie fans to check the film out in theaters, many have pointed out that the sequel stands on its own without relying on many direct connections to the 1996 first film.
Still, some have noticed that one scene in “Twisters” felt like a natural opportunity to bring back one of the original film’s biggest stars — and expressed puzzlement when that didn’t happen. Many fans believed that Daisy Edgar-Jones’ Kate could have been the daughter of Dr. Jo Harding, the storm chaser that Helen Hunt played in “Twister.” But when Kate returns to Oklahoma to visit her mother in “Twisters,” her mother turns out to be an unrelated character played by Maura Tierney.

David Corenswet is about to become a massive movie star. The "Pearl" and "The Greatest Hits" actor is about to be Clark Kent in director James Gunn's "Superman," which is due to hit theaters next summer. We recently got a look at Corenswet suited up as Superman and it instantly took him to another level of stardom. Before he makes his mark on the DC Universe, he's starring in another big blockbuster in the form of "Twisters." Serving as a standalone sequel to the 1996 classic blockbuster "Twister," it's one of the biggest movies of summer 2024.
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung ("Minari"), on paper, "Twisters" couldn't be more different than "Superman." One deals with exaggerated versions of natural disasters, while the other is a superhero movie centered on otherworldly beings. However, as Chung recently explained to The Hollywood Reporter, Corenswet did bring a little bit of Supes with him to this film's set.

As Twisters churns and thrashes its way into theaters, one of the film’s stars, Glen Powell, is paying tribute to the late actor Bill Paxton, who helped make the first film a classic. Paxton starred alongside Helen Hunt in Jan de Bont’s 1996 action blockbuster as Bill Harding, an accomplished storm chaser on the verge of changing the way extreme weather patterns. Despite not getting along on set, Paxton and Hunt’s chemistry in Twister is electric, and the film would only be nearly as memorable with Paxton’s energy, bravery, and entertaining approach to the material. In a post on social media, Powell remembered the late Paxton, whom he worked with on the 2013 film Red Wing.
“As we release Twisters into the world today, I just wanted to look up and tip my hat to the legend that is Bill Paxton,” Powell shared on Twitter. “A great friend...

“Twisters” is getting ready to shake up the summer box office.
The disaster movie, a sequel to the 1996 classic “Twister,” has made $10.7 million in Thursday previews at the box office. The Universal film, starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos as storm chasers, is expected to open between $50 million and $55 million this weekend.

Deep down, all of us are attracted to danger in one form or another. Sure, most of us wouldn't consider ourselves daredevils, but the act of living requires some level of risk on a daily basis. As such, it's easier (if not simple) to understand the actions of those people who do take their lives in their own hands, because they do so for multiple reasons: one, for the sheer visceral thrill of doing so, but two, because they know, as we all do, that taking a risk is the best way to ensure actual results.
On the surface, "Twisters" may seem an odd duck when compared to the plethora of legacy sequels that have arisen over the last 15 or so years. Unlike most legacy sequels, there are no returning characters from the original 1996 "Twister" who make an appearance,...

On the surface, "Twisters" may seem an odd duck when compared to the plethora of legacy sequels that have arisen over the last 15 or so years. Unlike most legacy sequels, there are no returning characters from the original 1996 "Twister" who make an appearance,...

Chicago – “Twisters” is the kind of movie seemingly engineered to be seen on a big screen, accompanied by ear splitting sound that rattles your seat. And in that kind of environment, it’s exactly the kind of big dumb popcorn movie it sets out to be, even if it doesn’t add up to much once it’s all over.

British actress Daisy Edgar Jones dons an American accent as a storm chaser named Kate who walks away from chasing tornadoes after a twister kills most of her high school research team. But she’s lured back by the other survivor Javi (Anthony Ramos), who has new gadgets which could help them produce the first 3D models of a twister in action … which could be used to devise better warning systems and save lives.

Before Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, there were Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, who starred in the original high-octane thriller Twister (1996) as storm chasers.
Romantic tension similar, but also different, to that between the main characters in Twisters unfolded in the original film. The new installment also nods to the reboot in several ways. The conflict within the two films is also similar. Twisters looks to touch down to a $50 million start at the box office opening weekend.
With Universal’s sequel directed by Lee Isaac Chung about to hit theaters, some may be wondering where to watch the original natural disaster film.
Where Can I Watch ‘Twister’? Is It Streaming?
Twister, which came out in 1996, is available to stream on Max as well as with the Hulu and Max bundle. It is also available to rent on Prime Video, Apple TV+ and more.

Jan de Bont’s Twister remains one of the most beloved blockbusters of the 1990s, at least for the millennials who grew up with it. That’s chiefly due to its still-awesome special effects, fashioned at a time when filmmakers were delighting in experimenting with the newfound possibilities of CGI. Each storm was meticulously crafted and impressively tactile, making good on the film’s tagline, “It’ll blow you away.” So why, in an even more advanced cinematic landscape where any phenomenon can be easily created with the click of a computer mouse, does Lee Isaac Chung’s long-gap sequel, Twisters, barely kick up dust?

The storm-chasing sequel Twisters is racking up positive reviews (currently at 84 percent “Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes) and continues a much-needed summer of Glen Powell. The film chronicles an unprecedented outbreak of violent storms that tear through the American heartland, with characters spouting plenty of meteorological jargon.
But the one thing Twisters doesn’t have: a reference to climate change.
This is rather surprising. The possible impact of climate change on tornadoes is complicated and still being figured out, but scientists seem to agree tornado patterns are changing (with more tornadoes happening on the same days and more tornadoes happening outside of Tornado Alley, even if the number of tornadoes overall is unchanged). And, in any case, the American Red Cross recent told ABC News that “the climate crisis is forcing the American Red Cross to respond to nearly twice as many large disasters as we did a decade ago.”

If you were forced to pick a '90s blockbuster that lent itself to the legacy-sequel craze, the original "Twister" would probably be near the bottom of the list, and "Minari" director Lee Isaac Chung would be the very last name you'd pick to bring such a follow-up to life. Boy, what a difference nearly 30 years makes. Back then, there was practically a cottage industry built around productions featuring an A-list headliner surrounded by a strong stable of character actors, a journeyman filmmaker bringing a sturdy sense of direction, and a straightforward enough hook to put butts in seats. A movie like that merely needed a savvy marketing push and the promise of big-screen spectacle to set it on the right track ... and thrill-seeking audiences could be relied upon to take care of the rest and lead it to box-office glory, thank you very much.

Tom Cruise attended the London premiere of Twisters earlier this week, and it’s safe to say he had an absolute ball. Anthony Ramos, who stars in Twisters alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, told People that Cruise was “losing his mind” during the screening.
“Glen was sitting behind me, my brother was next to me, and Tom was behind my brother. Tom just kept hitting me the whole entire movie,” Ramo said. “After the third time I turned back around, like, ‘Yo, Tom Cruise is bugging out right now!’ He keeps hitting me.” In a normal movie-watching situation, that would be very annoying, but are you really going to tell Tom Cruise to stop hitting you because he’s so excited about your movie?
Ramos continued, “He keeps hitting me because he’s excited about different moments, and he’s laughing. He’s just laughing out loud the whole entire film.

With the upcoming release of Twisters, it’s hard not to think of the late Bill Paxton, who starred in the original movie alongside Helen Hunt. Although the new movie isn’t expected to feature any of the original actors, it will feature a tribute to Paxton in the form of his son, James.
James Paxton, now 30, will make a cameo appearance in Twisters as a tribute to his father. He was just a year old when the original movie was shot, but his first time seeing the movie arrived a decade later when his father called him in to see it on TV. “Dad was making dinner and he called me in, like, ‘Hey, look, what’s on. It’s your old man,’” Paxton told Variety.

The summer box office has rebounded in recent weeks thanks to the blockbuster success of animated movies like "Despicable Me 4" and Pixar's "Inside Out 2," which is already one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. We also had a blockbuster horror breakout in the form of "A Quiet Place: Day One." But has the time come for an old-school blockbuster to become a theatrical hit? If the early numbers are any indication, it appears as though "Twisters" will indeed keep the hot streak alive as the disaster flick figures to get off to a promising start.
"Twisters" is currently eyeing an opening weekend between $40 and $55 million domestically when it arrives next weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter. That said, tracking from other outlets suggests that is a modest number even on the high end. Box Office Theory has the film taking in anywhere between $71 and $83 million in its debut.

Thankfully, many reactions to Twisters are glowingly positive, with audience members praising Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar Jones’s on-screen chemistry, brilliant direction by Lee Isaac Chung, and thrilling special effects.
People across Twitter say Twisters feels like a “good old fashioned Summer blockbuster,” with adrenaline-fueled action, a predictable yet effective story, and compelling protagonists who make the wild ride well worth the price of admission.
