We recently hosted a poll asking which TV legend should be the next person to receive the 2025 SAG life achievement award. The overwhelming top choice was Emmy and SAG winner Jean Smart. She received 31.84% of support among the 18 candidates we offered for consideration.
When we offered a similar poll last year, double Oscar winner Barbra Streisand was the top choice, and then she was indeed selected for this honor on the Screen Actors Guild Awards. We created a separate poll earlier this month about film legends with Meryl Streep receiving the most support over Glenn Close, Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Lange.
The SAG-AFTRA selection committee will likely be announcing their next recipient in the near future. The 2025 ceremony will be live February 23 streaming on Netflix.

Diablo Cody has completed the script for the 9 to 5 remake.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly at Comic-Con 2024 on Friday, the filmmaker talked about the differences between her version from the 1980 classic starring Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda. The remake, which Jennifer Aniston will produce, is still in development.
“One thing that was really fun about it for me is that the original movie focused on the battle of the sexes and the corporate world,” Cody said. “And to me, I see most of the conflict taking place generationally, like Gen Z versus boomers in the workplace, and how now we have this whole generation of people coming up who’ve learned to set boundaries, and that is actually, shockingly enough, a new development.”
She added, “You have other generations out there in the corporate world who we’re told just to kind of suck it up. So there’s definitely a cultural clash there,...

Earlier this summer we had to endure the misbegotten Summer Camp which was yet another attempt by Diane Keaton, joined by Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard, to mix comedy and later-in-life drama in an older female bonding flick. Keaton had great success in the first film that announced this subgenre, 2018’s Book Club, which smartly matched four veteran actresses including Jane Fonda that led to a more mixed-results sequel set in Italy. Fonda also found real success in the subgenre with the entertaining 80 For Brady with Sally Field, Rita Moreno and Lily Tomlin along for the ride. Thus it seemed natural that other beloved female stars of a certain age would also want to jump on board in this game attempt to reverse Hollywood’s youth obsession and provide a little something-something for aging boomers everywhere.

Acclaimed director David O. Russell has developed a reputation for alienating most of the actors in his movies. The director who once got into a fistfight with George Clooney on the set of “Three Kings” once also put Christopher Nolan in a headlock after Jude Law dropped out of Russell’s film I Heart Huckabees for a role offered by Christopher Nolan.
David O. Russell’s 2004 existential comedy I Heart Huckabees featured Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin as a pair of “existential detectives” hired by various clients to explore the purpose of their pointless lives. The actors included Jude Law, among others.
Pre-production for the film was derailed after several cast members who were tapped to star in it dropped out. According to the New York Times, Gwyneth Paltrow was the first to drop out, followed by Jude Law.

Before David Simon debuted his groundbreaking socio-political tapestry “The Wire” to audiences and helped garner the prestige HBO now only reserves for “Game of Thrones” and superhero spinoffs, he wrote the book on the world of crime and law enforcement in Baltimore. Published in 1991, his non-fiction book “Homicide: A Year of Killing Streets” pools two years of research from Simon’s time spent observing the Baltimore Police Department, which itself followed four years spent on the police beat for The Baltimore Sun newspaper.
Wishing to adapt the book into a feature film, Simon got a copy to filmmaker and Baltimore native Barry Levinson, who felt the material was better suited to a TV series. Levinson shared with Paul Attansio, a former Washington Post film critic whose would go on to write the Oscar-nominated “Quiz Show,” as well as “Donnie Brasco,” and together the team brought the project to NBC, where...

Jill Schary Robinson, the memoirist, journalist and novelist whose father, Dore Schary, headed MGM in the 1950s and son, Jeremy Zimmer, is the founder and CEO of the United Talent Agency, has died. She was 88.
Schary Robinson died Saturday at her home in Beverly Hills, her family announced.
She wrote her first memoir, 1963’s With a Cast of Thousands, which chronicled her experiences growing up in Hollywood during the Golden Age, then followed with 1972’s Thanks for the Rubies, Now Please Pass the Moon and 1974’s Bed/Time/Story.
Bed/Time/Story won a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and became the 1980 NBC telefilm A Cry for Love, starring Susan Blakely and Powers Boothe in a moving story about love and addiction.
“No one has written better than she of the bewitching and distorting power the dream factory can have over our lives,” The New York Times once wrote.

Brad Bird started his career with some of the most iconic animated features including The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille. His films have been so memorable that they took no time to become cult classics among the fans of the genre. Interestingly, the director also became an iconic voice actor when he was forced to voice the character of Edna Mode in The Incredibles.

Edna “E” Mode from The Incredibles is regarded as one of the most memorable Pixar characters ever. Despite her brief roles in both installments, the fashion designer for the superheroes became an instant fan favorite. According to Bird, he only provided a temporary voice to the character before everyone realized that nobody else could incorporate that desired sassiness in Edna’s words.

Bob Newhart, an Emmy winner and nine-time nominee who helped launch the recorded comedy craze with two smash stand-up albums before starring in the revered TV shows The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart, died today at his Los Angeles home. He was 94.
His longtime publicist Jerry Digney said Newhart died after a series of short illnesses.
Newhart broke out in 1960 with a pair of No. 1 comedy albums — despite never having done stand-up before. The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart spent 14 weeks atop the Billboard 200 and stayed on that chart for more than two years. The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back! arrived about 10 months later and also hit No. 1. The former won Grammys for Album of the Year, Comedy Album of the Year and Best New Artist and featured a slow-spoken still-cited monologue with Newhart as Abe Lincoln.

Let’s talk about the David of it all.
The new chairman and CEO of the soon-to-be-combined Skydance and Paramount Global — Hollywood producer and Oracle heir David Ellison — has had quite the week, and it’s only Wednesday.
Show business, Wall Street and media watchers have digested the news that Ellison finally brokered a deal for the Redstone family empire. In the subsequent two days, talk around the executive’s capability in his new high-flying role has boiled down to three questions: Who is David Ellison today? What does he bring to the table? What does he have working against him?
The town has many thoughts — most of them good in these early days.
“He’s been a CEO and a successful one, probably the most successful independent there is,” said Ariel Emanuel, CEO of Endeavor and Tko Group Holdings.

Joseph Hardy, the stage director who introduced the enduring charmer You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, won a Tony Award for 1970’s Child’s Play and, as an executive producer in daytime drama, attempted to rescue the fading serial Ryan’s Hope with some of the most controversial changes in soap history, died June 6. He was 95.
His death was confirmed by New York’s Primary Stages Off Broadway theater company. A resident since 2020 at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey, his passing was not widely reported at the time of his death.
Born March 8, 1929, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, Hardy graduated from the Yale School of Drama and began his show business career working as a script editor for New York-based soap operas. For those of us who have been here for a decade or two, it’s remarkable to consider both how much and how little the city of Los Angeles has changed over the years. There are still plenty of the old landmarks—the Hollywood Sign, Pink’s Hot Dogs, that dude who rollerblades around is white robes and plays guitar on the Venice boardwalk—while other, seemingly indestructible, institutions have tragically bitten the dust.
So! With local issues perpetually at the forefront of our mind this week, here now are ten films that remind us of life in Los Angeles during a very particular and only recently bygone era: the ’90s and early 2000s. These films are honest portrayals of what livin’ la vida loca LA-style is all about, whether they’re a glimpse into the lifestyles of the rich and famous, the realities of showbiz or struggles within SoCal’s toughest ‘hoods.

This week, The View had some interesting discussions. One of those centered on an interview with LGBTQ+ comedian Sandra Bernhard. This interview took place on Thursday, and the comedian asked Joy Behar if she had ever “gotten it on with a lady?” Behar’s response was hilarious.
Here is what Joy Behar said during the interview about her sexuality.
Joy Behar Responds To Questions About Her Sexuality
Joy Behar was talking to Sandra Bernhard about her role as a lesbian comedian. That is when Sandra popped an interesting question to Joy. She asked, “Here’s a question. Have you ever gotten it on with a lady?”

That led Joy to respond, “No, but someday I will.” That was a nice enough answer, but then Sandra told her she should “hurry up.” When asked when she might finally hook up with a woman, Joy, 81, said she would...

In the making since 2019, Page Hurwitz’s new Netflix documentary, Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, taps a throng of queer notables — from Wanda Sykes, Rosie O’Donnell and Lily Tomlin to Joel Kim Booster, Fortune Feimster and Bob the Drag Queen — to show how LGBTQ funny people have left their mark and challenged others’ perceptions for more than a century.
“None of these comedians set out to change the world. They set out to make people laugh,” Hurwitz said at the film’s Tribeca Festival premiere ahead of its June 18 streaming debut. “And along the way, they did change the culture and, I think, they changed the world.”
Featuring an intergenerational and diverse cast, the documentary — set against the backdrop of the Netflix Is a Joke Fest’s Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration show in 2022 — unpacks what has fueled the cycle of progress and regression that has surrounded the queer comedy community for decades.

Homicide: Life On the Street is coming to streaming, according to David Simon, author of Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, the book on which the show created by Paul Attanasio was based.
In a new post on social media, Simon said that NBC had cleared the music used on the series, and it would be coming to a streaming platform, with NBCUniversal’s Peacock the logical home.
“Word is that NBC has managed to finally secure the music rights necessary to sell Homicide: Life On The Streets to a streaming platform,” read the post shared by Simon on X, formerly known as Twitter.”
He continued, “Andre [Braugher], Richard [Belzer], Yaphet [Kotto], Ned [Beatty], and so many others who labored on that wonderful show on both sides of the camera will soon regain a full share of their legacy. Stay tuned for more details.”

At the Bentonville Film Festival this weekend, the diversity-minded event’s founder and chair Geena Davis spoke about the legacy of her 1991 feminist masterstroke Thelma & Louise, while insisting that remake-happy Hollywood had better keep its hands off this one because updating the story would be “pointless.”
“Well, it must never be remade,” the Oscar winner told IndieWire in an interview at the Arkansas festival. “I mean, it’s 30-something years later, and it holds up more than others. I’m not saying this because I’m in it, but it really holds up. And there’s no need to revisit it. What would be the point? In my opinion.”

One of the best aspects of TV is watching relationships build, transform, and transpire, whether they are healthy or not.
Feuding females, frenemies, and gal pals glued at the hip seem to carry a magical essence in the TV world.
Some are so iconic they drive the show and make for the best scenes and audience draw. Here are 17 female duos who obsess over each other!
Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney (Laverne & Shirley)
Laverne & Shirley first aired in 1976 and was a spinoff of Happy Days. It stars Penny Marshall (Laverne) and Cindy Williams (Shirley).
The two are best friends, roommates, and co-workers at the Shotz Brewery in Milwaukee. They are complete opposites who balance each other perfectly and constantly encourage each other.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Lily Tomlin, Bob the Drag Queen, Billy Eichner, and 19 other comedy trailblazers walk into a room. The punchline? It’s the largest known gathering of queer comics on one stage ever recorded in history. Filmed live in Los Angeles as part of the Netflix is a Joke Festival and released in 2022 as its own special, Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration became the new epicenter of the queer comedy boom.
But who helped these comics get here? This is the question at the heart of director Page Hurwitz’s film Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, a first-of-its-kind documentary framing LGBTQ+ comedy as an irrepressible art form of resistance. Consider the stand-up special, which she co-directed, as the “energetic spine running through” the film, which arrives on Netflix on June 18. The documentary interlaces moments from the 2022 event with archival footage and testimonials from...

In the opening section of Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, you might be forgiven for thinking this is an extended Pride Month promo to breathe new life into Netflix’s 2022 special, Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration. But in a Q&a following the rousingly received opening-night screening at the Provincetown Film Festival, director Page Hurwitz clarified the chicken-and-the-egg situation, explaining that she produced the event at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, which assembled 22 prominent queer comics on the same bill, as a foundational building block for this documentary surveying the rich history of LGBTQ+ comedians.
At a time when a new generation of queer comics from across the sexual and gender identity spectrum has emerged into what appears to be a thriving scene, this is an invaluable primer on the many performers who kicked down resistant doors to make today’s greater representation possible.

Jude Law has been teasing audiences for decades now. His looks, charm, tenacity, and willingness to channel that success in interesting, unexpected directions have always been admirable. But one of his riskier pivots — perhaps only in retrospect — was David O. Russell’s 2004 ensemble black comedy, “I Heart Huckabees.” Co-starring Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Wahlberg, Naomi Watts, and many others, the film follows a group of interconnected lives all being investigated by “existential detectives.” Law had admired Russell and, unlike some of Russell’s past players, continues a relationship with the auteur to this day, but knows the film and the process of making it can be viewed with a negative light.
“The experience of making that film was bizarre,” said Law in a recent interview with Vanity Fair. “We were all there doing it for nothing, just loving being in each other’s company and playing. I remember fantasizing,...

Jennifer Aniston Producing 9 to 5 Remake
Jennifer Aniston has taken more of a role behind the scenes than on camera in recent years. The Friends star has produced several projects but her latest might have mixed reactions. She is reportedly producing a remake of the movie 9 to 5.
The 1980 hit starred Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton as three secretaries forced to endure the sexual advances of their boss. The three join forces against their sexist boss and fantasize about various ways they would murder him.
It was Dolly Parton’s first acting role. She also wrote and recorded the movie’s theme, and “9 to 5” is still a bop.

Lily Tomlin, one of three stars in the iconic 1980 movie 9 to 5, recently told People magazine that she felt “rejected” after the announcement of Jennnifer Aniston’s remake. The film, which starred Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin and featured the iconic Dolly Parton theme song, was a comedy masterclass about the corporate world riddled with sexism.
Earlier this year, Jennifer Aniston’s production banner Echo Films announced that a reboot is in the works at 20th Century Studios. In a recent interview with People, Lily Tomlin spoke about the sequel written by Oscar-winner Cody Diablo.

Lily Tomlin knows that a remake of the 1980 comedy classic 9 to 5 would be tricky. Particularly since the world she, Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton parodied has changed so much. And that’s why a sequel never happened.
“We had one official crack at the script,” Tomlin said in a People interview. “The draft just didn’t work for us. We couldn’t really see the work world today [in the pages]. People work from home. They take gig work. They don’t even know their boss. They’re at home!”
The trio ended up passing, with Parton telling Entertainment Tonight that the women had “dropped that whole idea.”
“I don’t think we’re going to do the sequel,” she said at the time. “We never could get the script where it was enough different than the first one, and that one turned out so good.”

Lily Tomlin’s message to Jennifer Aniston and Diablo Cody: you’re going to have to work longer hours than “9 to 5” to update the 1980 film for the present day.
Tomlin told People magazine that expanding on the comedic revenge storyline that dealt with sexism in the workplace is a “tough” task for today’s corporate environment. Aniston’s production banner Echo Films announced in 2024 that a reboot is in the works at 20th Century Studios, with Oscar-winner Cody writing the script.
“It’s going to be tough to make [the movie] happen. My sympathies are with Jennifer and her writer Diablo, who is a good writer,” Tomlin said.
Tomlin also admitted that at first she felt “rejected” upon the announcement of the remake. She and fellow original “9 to 5” co-stars Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton had tried for decades to get a sequel made.

Lily Tomlin feels "rejected" over Jennifer Aniston's new version of '9 to 5'.The 55-year-old 'Friends' actress recently revealed she plans to produce a reimagining of the 1980 classic - which starred Tomlin alongside Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton - and Tomlin has admitted she was hurt when she heard about plans to bring the story to the big screen once again. When asked how she feels about the new film, Tomlin told People: "I felt sort of the same way I felt about the [2009 Broadway] musical. You know, part of you feels rejected. You think that character’s yours always. And you could reembody it."She went on to insist Aniston and screenwriter Diablo Cody may face some troubles getting the project off the ground. She added: ""It's going to be tough to make [the movie] happen. My sympathies are with Jennifer and her writer Diablo, who is a good writer.

Lily Tomlin knows the challenges of a 9 to 5 sequel, which is why she feels Jennifer Aniston’s reimagining of the iconic 1980 film is going to be “tough to make.”
The actress, who starred alongside Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda in the original movie, recently opened up to People magazine about their attempt to write a follow-up to the beloved film in 2018.
“We had one official crack at the script,” Tomlin recalled. “The draft just didn’t work for us. We couldn’t really see the work world today [in the pages]. People work from home. They take gig work. They don’t even know their boss. They’re at home!”
Though all three women were going to reprise their roles for the sequel, Parton later told Entertainment Tonight that they had ultimately “dropped that whole idea.”
“I don’t think we’re going to do the sequel,” the “Jolene” singer said at the time.

Forty-four years after “9 to 5” became a cinematic sensation and rally cry for women’s rights, stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin reunited to celebrate the Hollywood premiere of the documentary “Still Working 9 to 5.”
The original comedy followed a trio of office workers conspiring to put a check on their “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” of a boss, played by the late Dabney Coleman. In April, it was announced that Jennifer Aniston’s Echo Films was set to produce a “reimagining” of the movie for 20th Century Studios.
“We hope she has great success,” Tomlin told Variety. “It’s a hard nut to crack because the issues are somewhat different.”
“I hope she does it,” Fonda interjected.
“There’s still the undercurrent of the same kind of negativity towards females … [they’re] not easy-to-solve issues. So we’re very eager to see what they do,” Tomlin added.

Image Source: Amazon In 1980, the Equal Rights Amendment was a source of great debate, and, at the time, 9 To 5 may have been the film that embodied the feminist movement the most. As you are no doubt aware, the Era didn’t pass and, in the 44 years since then, the issue of women facing discrimination in the workplace has only gotten more attention, and 9 To 5 keeps finding new fans. According to The InSneider, Jennifer Aniston is producing a remake of the movie, the film’s legend will certainly continue to be cemented in Hollywood history. Over the years, we’ve talked to Dolly Parton — who starred alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin — about the movie and its significance, and Parton told us that, even at the time, they realized they were doing something that would make a big difference for women in the workplace. Filming romantic or intimate scenes can be challenging for some actors, a problem often mitigated by the presence of an intimacy coordinator on set. However, it’s a luxury the beloved singer Dolly Parton did not have while filming her debut movie. After making reigns as a singer-songwriter with hits like Jolene and Here You Come Again, Parton embarked on her journey on the silver screen, debuting with the 1980 comedy film 9 to 5.
