My Lady Jane will not return for a second season. Prime Video has cancelled the historical fiction series after eight episodes. The entire first season was released by the streamer on June 27th.
The series is a radical retelling of English royal history. In this version, King Henry VIII's son Edward does not die of tuberculosis, Lady Jane Grey is not beheaded, and neither is her rascal husband Guildford. At the center of the series is the brilliant and headstrong Jane (Emily Bader), who is shocked to be crowned queen overnight and finds herself the target of nefarious villains coming for the crown (and her head).

Like the real Jane Grey, the reign of My Lady Jane turned out to be a short one.
Amazon’s Prime Video has canceled the period drama, which combined romance and alternate-world fantasy. The cancellation comes about seven weeks after Prime Video released all eight episodes of the show’s first (and now only) season.
My Lady Jane, based on a novel by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows, is set in a 16th century England where humans co-exist with shape-shifters who can take the form of either people or animals. Jane Grey (Emily Bader) is an ordinary human, known as a Verity, who becomes sympathetic to the oppressed shape-shifters, known as Ethians — which will become a problem for the ruling class as Jane rises to power.
Edward Bluemel, Rob Brydon, Dominic Cooper, Anna Chancellor, Jordan Peters, Kate O’Flynn, Henry Ashton, Jim Broadbent and Ollie Chris (who narrates) star alongside Bader.

Exclusive: Prime Video has opted not to renew My Lady Jane for a second season. The news comes seven weeks after all eight episodes from the show’s first season were binge released with little promotion June 27.
The news is not entirely surprising. Creatively, My Lady Jane has done well. Despite taking a very big swing with a premise that crosses genres that don’t normally co-exist — historical romance, fantasy, adventure, comedy and farce — it has been among the best reviewed new series this year. But it didn’t find a broad enough audience, never landing on Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming rankings for originals.
Created by Gemma Burgess based on the 2016 YA historical fiction novels, My Lady Jane takes an alt-history approach to one of England’s monarchs with the shortest rule, the 16th century Lady Jane Grey, aka the Nine Days Queen. Mixing palace intrigue with a fantastical take on class,...

Emily Bader and Anna Chancellor sat down to share their thoughts on their new fantastical series My Lady Jane in their new uInterview.
My Lady Jane is a new fantasy/romance series that follows the historical figure Lady Jane Grey and her husband Guildford, who live in the reign of Edward, the son of Henry VIII. When Jane is unexpectedly crowned queen overnight she becomes the target of criminals who want her throne and her life.
Bader recalled the wildest thing she had to do for the show. “For me, the craziest thing I had to do was the scene where Jane is riding a horse down a castle bridge in the cliffs of Dover—“
Chancellor jumped in excitedly; “And there was a storm—“
Bader laughed, “It was the craziest actor moment ever. And there’s fire on the sides.”
Chancellor added, “And there was mud!”

Amazon Prime Video has come up with its own fancier version of Bridgerton. The only difference would be that My Lady Jane uses real-life characters from history. The makers, however, have taken an alternate historical approach, which would mean there are some liberties taken in the context of some major characters, and their life stories may have been altered to suit the narrative. Set in England after the death of the promiscuous King Henry VIII, his last surviving children are still in court, and one of them wants the throne to themselves.

In the 16th century, Lady Jane Grey was briefly queen of England but met a tragic fate when, just nine days after taking the throne, she was overthrown and later executed at the age of 16. But what if the story didn’t have to end that way? The new Prime Video series My Lady Jane explores what could have been if Jane’s reign continued and she lived to rule another day, with more than a few unexpected twists.
In this reimagining, England is divided not only politically but also between regular humans and a people called the Ethians, who have the remarkable ability to shapeshift into animals. Jane herself comes from a noble family but dreams of a life outside the strict rules of her time. That seems impossible when her ambitious mother betrothes her to a man against her will. But fate has more in store when Jane...

It’s probably fair to say that every single drama about the Tudor dynasty would like you to know it’s not like all those other dramas about the Tudor dynasty. This one is steamier, or more emotionally intimate; that one features nontraditional casting or focuses on a less famous figure. So I’ll say this for Prime Video’s My Lady Jane: This one, really and truly, is not like the others. Sure, there are crowns and pretty ballgowns and cool sword fights and castles; as ever, the plot hinges on noble conspiracies and threats of beheading. But it also features a twist that sends it careening so far away from established reality, one wonders why it pretends to be about the Tudors at all.

Emily Bader plays Lady Jane Gray in My Lady Jane for Amazon Prime Video, here’s the trailer for the new show.
Historical swashbucklers with female leading roles are becoming a regular feature, what with the success of Netflix’s Damsel and the Enola Holmes series, as well as Sally Wainwright’s wonderful Renegade Nell on Disney+.
The latest to hit the market is My Lady Jane, which comes to Amazon’s Prime Video service next month.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Gird your loins for the tragic tale of Lady Jane Grey, the young Tudor noblewoman who was Queen of England for nine days and then beheaded in 1553… F*ck that. We’re retelling history the way it should have happened: the damsel in distress saves herself. This is an epic tale of true love and high adventure set in an alt-universe of action, history, fantasy, comedy, romance, and rompy-pompy.

"What if history were different?!" Amazon's Prime Video has revealed the official trailer for a series titled My Lady Jane, arriving for streaming in June this summer. It's yet another of these spins on the damsel in distress trope by turning the ladies into the badass heroines who do the rescuing instead of being the one rescued (also see: Netflix's Damsel). History's most tragic heroines but re-imagined with an uplifting twist: the damsel in distress saves herself - and then the kingdom. This is adapted from the book of the same name about "The Lady Janies". Emily Bader stars as Lady Jane Grey, with an ensemble cast featuring Edward Bluemel, Jordan Peters, Anna Chancellor, Dominic Cooper, Kate O'Flynn, Rob Brydon, Abbie Hern, Isabella Brownson, Will Keen. At the center of this swashbuckling new series is the brilliant and headstrong Jane, who is shocked to be crowned queen and then...

Promenade, a new film from John Jencks, has begun production in Brighton this week. More on the film below.
We’re hearing rumbles that a new British film is heading our way sooner rather than later from director John Jencks. The Hippopotamus director is helming Promenade, a Brighton set whodunnit, next and the project has just started filming, we hear.
The announcement comes with an ambiguous tagline: “50 Cast, 12 Stories, 1 Plot. No Heroes.” Colour us intrigued.
Here’s a synopsis for the film: In Brighton on the South coast of England, sharpened by the sting of sea spray, and mellowed by numinous light, a tight-knit community of oddballs and heart-felts live together in a tatty old mansion, the Fletcher Apartments. When a golden feather, the priceless antique mascot of the building, unexpectedly disappears, the residents have a mystery to solve. Will they find the talisman that previously bound them together, or will their community,...

"All it takes is one person to believe her." Amazon has unveiled a first look trailer for a new British crime drama series titled Fifteen-Love, without a streaming date announced yet. This seems to be a response to Luca Guadagnino's Challengers, which just got its own trailer yesterday, another romantic drama involving a young woman who's a tennis prodigy. Is this meant to be counter-programming? Or just another tennis-based story? Set in the world of elite tennis, the drama portrays Justine as a one-time rising star whose sudden success at 17 took her and her coach Glenn Lapthorn to the quarterfinals of the French Open. The former tennis prodigy makes an allegation against her former coach five years after an injury puts a stop to her career. In one of the opening scenes of the new HBO dramedy Rain Dogs, impoverished single mom Costello (Daisy May Cooper) has her daughter Iris (Fleur Tashjian) pretend to be sick so they can skip out on a cab fare they can’t afford. As they run from the irate driver, an apologetic Costello calls out, “I’m not usually a prick, promise!” Then, after a beat, she admits, “Well, sometimes I am!”
The fascinating, poignant, and at times darkly funny Rain Dogs exists primarily within that pause between the two sentences.

Every year, there are always a few critically acclaimed gems that don't get quite enough traction to make an impression among the tentpole summer blockbusters, whether it be through a lackluster marketing campaign or the big dogs pushing it out. One of this summer's most pleasant surprises is "Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris," a thoroughly delightful adaptation of Paul Gallico's 1958 novel about a London maid who travels to the city of lights to fulfill her dream of owning a Dior couture dress of her own.
I've never read the book upon which the film is based on, but director Anthony Fabian ("Good Hope") imbues the kind-hearted fairy tale with an exuberant amount of charm. It has the beating heart of a storybook, bolstered by a charismatic central performance from Lesley Manville.

"Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” is the fourth screen adaptation of Paul Gallico’s 1958 novel “Flowers for Mrs. Harris,” which kicked off a series of bestselling books about an enchanting English cleaning woman and her unlikely international adventures. Though the tale has been filmed three times before (most popularly as a 1992 TV movie starring Angela Lansbury), director Anthony Fabian’s new adaptation seems destined to become the definitive version thanks to its exquisite evocation of post-wwii Europe and the delicacy with which it tells its simple but heartfelt story.
In the film, the title character played by Lesley Manville is inspired to change her life when she lays eyes on her employer’s Christian Dior dress; the British housekeeper is so dazzled that she scrapes together all the money she can and travels to Paris to get her own Dior gown straight from the source. Mid-century high fashion and an irresistibly charming Lesley Manville add sparkle to the sweet, light-as-air Mrs Harris Goes To Paris, an uplifting tale in which an older British house cleaner falls in love with a Dior dress and decides she must have one of her own. It is a grown-up fairy-tale that fits neatly into a familiar genre of British films dealing with the divide between the working class and the aristocratic one. Set in 1957, Mrs Harris Goes To Paris also showcases mid-century couture fashion, with recreations of actual Christian Dior period dress designs, with other visual delights by costume designer Jenny Beavan, the creative force behind the fashions in last year’s Cruella.

For the new Focus Features film Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, based on Paul Gallico’s 1958 novel, costume designer Jenny Beavan takes on re-creating the looks of the legendary Christian Dior, who revolutionized fashion in 1947 with the introduction of his sumptuous wasp-waisted, full-skirted and rounded-shoulder “New Look” silhouette.
“Oh gosh, it was a really tough one,” says Beavan, about balancing the depiction of a captivating story and Dior’s enduringly influential design, which serves as a central plot device in the Anthony Fabian-directed fashion fable.
In 1957 London, brokenhearted housekeeper Ada Harris (Lesley Manville) is mesmerized by her aristocratic employer’s floral-appliquéd Dior gown, christened “Ravissante.” The glimmering confection serves as a sartorial catalyst for Mrs. Harris, still mourning her husband’s WWII disappearance, to feel love again as she embarks on a Parisian adventure to secure her own Dior.

A housekeeper waltzing into Christian Dior and choosing a couture gown may sound like the height of fantasy, but the biggest stretch in Anthony Fabian’s “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” may be all the nice French people she meets along the way. Starring the inimitable Lesley Manville, in a role that effectively transitions the frequent Mike Leigh collaborator into the Helen Mirren phase of her career, “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” is a charming confection of a middle-aged, middle-class fantasy.
