The Blue Angels happens to be a pretty cool title for a movie title. You are not at fault if you expect it to be some sort of thrilling thing. Well, “Blue Angels” is what the United States Navy flight demonstration squadron is popularly known as. In popular culture, it is, of course, the Top Gun films that have introduced us to them. Interestingly, Glen Powell, who rose to fame thanks to Top Gun: Maverick (2022), is one of the producers of the latest The Blue Angels movie. Powell also starred in another Blue Angels-inspired movie, Devotion (2023), following his Top Gun success. The Blue Angels is a documentary, though, about the real thing. Now I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but The Blue Angels turns out to be somewhat underwhelming—just saying.

At the age of 13, Glen Powell started his brush with acting. However, he truly received his seal of mass approval with the 2022 flick Top Gun: Maverick alongside Tom Cruise. Portraying Lt. Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin, the movie opened up a plethora of opportunities for him while also pushing his career to an all-time high.
These admissions come from no other than the actor himself, who recognizes the undeniable importance of the Mission Impossible star in his life at a time when he stars in the Blue Angels documentary.

Taking himself to a new height by acting as a producer for his latest venture, Powell opened up on how it all became a possibility only after his role in the acclaimed action-adventure. MGM/Imax’s The Blue Angels lands a hefty $1.3 million on just 255 domestic Imax screens from limited showtimes in the large format exhibitor’s exclusive theatrical engagement. The Paul Crowder film, with Glen Powell and Bad Robot as producers, follows the Navy’s famed demonstration flying squadron. It also “ushers in a new era for IMAX Documentaries, or Docu-busters,” the company said. It’s no. 9 at the domestic box office

Chronicling the eponymous Navy flight squadron across a season of demonstrations, “The Blue Angels” easily ranks near the top of the many Hollywood films to be considered “military propaganda” for their glowing depiction of the activities of U.S. men and women in uniform.
Whether or not that’s a good thing may come down to one’s feelings about the U.S. military. But in selecting for its subject an organization that performs a service that is itself public relations — and notably involves no battlefield operations — Paul Crowder’s Imax documentary feels both more honest than most in its intentions and more effective in highlighting that organization’s excellence.
Framed by the sun-up-to-sundown schedule maintained by the pilots themselves, “The Blue Angels” examines the precision, resilience and especially teamwork that goes into performing a series of dizzying, extremely dangerous aerial maneuvers. Less a celebration of the U.S. Navy’s Mavericks than its Top Guns,...

Glen Powell is a worker. He’s currently on an early 2000s Colin Ferrell/Samuel L. Jackson/Morgan Freeman run where he’s seemingly in everything. The breakout star of Top Gun: Maverick, who has two movies coming out this summer — Hit Man and Twisters — was also recently reported to join Margaret Qualley and Ed Harris in the thriller Huntington for writer/director John Patton Ford. Plus, he has stated that he and his Anyone But You co-star Sydney Sweeney are currently looking for more projects to star in after they capitalized on their on-set romance speculation.

The Blue Angels, a feature documentary from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and Imax about the storied U.S. Navy and Marine Corps flight squadron from the cockpit, has landed at Amazon Studios.
The documentary, also from Glen Powell’s Barnstorm Productions, Zipper Bros Films and Dolphin Entertainment, has not yet set its release plans after Amazon Studios picked up the worldwide rights. But The Blue Angels will screen in Imax theaters at some point, while the doc is also expected to get play on Amazon’s Prime Video.
The Blue Angels uses Imax cameras to follow a year in the life of the Blue Angels from training through their touring show season. Imax got its start in making films for museums, science centers and other institutional partners before the Canadian-based company branched out into digitally remastering and screening Hollywood tentpoles on its large format screens after they were often shot using its proprietary cameras.

Ron Howard is fast becoming a noted music documentarian: His 2016 film, “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week — the Touring Years,” released by Abramorama in theaters and Hulu on television, was a Grammy winner. His follow-up is “Pavarotti,” a doc about the man who became one of the most successful and beloved opera singers in history. The movie, which opened on June 7, features seminal performances by the late tenor as well as intimate interviews, including never-before-seen footage and appearances by such fans as Princess Diana, Bono, Nelson Mandela, Spike Lee, Kofi Annan, Stevie Wonder and Sting.
To craft the film, Howard reteamed with “The Beatles” project editor Paul Crowder and co-producer Nigel Sinclair, who were involved from the start, says the director. “As with the Beatles film, it really helps to have an editor who’s very musical,” Howard says, “and Paul, who’s also a director, brings all that: his musicality,...

Luciano Pavarotti was one of the most successful tenors of all time, yet the famous Italian opera singer struggled with doubt about his talent. In the first trailer for Ron Howard’s upcoming documentary, Pavarotti, the legendary singer expresses uncertainty at a young age.
Pavarotti, whose father was a tenor, said his mother always told him he had “a beautiful voice.” Yet the young performer would ask if she was just being kind.
“I said momma you say that because you are my mother,” Pavarotti recalled, adding that his mother would respond, “No, because I don’t say that when I hear your father.”
Insiders also describe the singer as a “nervous wreck before every performance” in the trailer from CBS Films. The film hits theaters June 7.

Beatlemania is back again, thanks to Ron Howard’s acclaimed doc about the Fab Four’s touring years, “Eight Days a Week,” and the chart-topping “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” 50th anniversary remix. In both cases, Giles Martin, son of Beatles producer George Martin, served as music producer, supplying the 5.1 mix for “Eight Days a Week.”
There’s Emmy consideration for the vital sound work of Cameron Frankley (supervising sound editor ) and Jon Michaels (co-supervising sound editor). They were tasked with making all of the archival and fan-sourced footage sound good — but not too good.
Recreating the ’60s Soundscapes
“Eight Days a Week” not only documents the surreal hysteria of Beatlemania during the touring years of 1962-1966, but also how much John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr enjoyed playing together. That is, until Beatlemania drowned out the music and burst their bubble. Touring just wasn’t fun anymore
But the challenge was keeping the soundscapes as natural to the period as possible. “When we were in the environment of the early 1960s, the key to it was making the sounds of the cars going by and everything else appropriately good,” said Michaels. “So we would often take contemporary recordings of old cars, and then degraded them so that they sounded like they were recorded in the ’60s.
Although director Howard didn’t provide a lot of notes about sound, he usually asked to turn up the volume on the occasional song. “He was more concerned that you hear the thing,” Michaels said.
The Screaming Girls Dilemma
But when it came to legendary concert footage, which was recorded in mono (from the Hollywood Bowl to Shea Stadium), Martin developed a technique of digitally separating the instruments and vocals and remixing them in 5.1 stereo. This included separating the sounds of screaming girls.
“The initial thought was to cut the screaming girls and replace the track with less piercing crowd noise,” Michaels said. “But that wasn’t what a Beatles concert sounded like. But because we had it extracted, we were able to find that balance between the actual song, remixed in 5.1, a bit of the 5.1 version of screaming girls, and then just a natural concert crowd that we built ourselves to give it depth and make it feel not quite as harsh.”
The Shock of Spotting Sigourney Weaver
The biggest shock for Michaels and others was spotting footage of “Alien” star Sigourney Weaver, who attended the Hollywood Bowl concert as a teen in the mid-’60s. “There was that moment where they got the talking heads saying what the Beatles meant to them, and there’s Sigourney Weaver as a teen getting ready to see the Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl,” said Michaels.
The Weaver footage was part of a treasure trove of fan-sourced material accessed by editor Paul Crowder. Weaver was also glimpsed outside a hotel where the Beatles were staying. “When Paul went through all this footage, he mentioned [spotting] a handful of [famous] people, and everyone denied it except for Sigourney Weaver,” said Michaels.

Mark Monroe will write the documentary, which chronicles Pavarotti’s life as a world-renowned tenor and his work as a philanthropist. The Italian died in 2007 at the age of 71.
Polygram Entertainment and Studiocanal are also on board and will co-finance the project, while Studiocanal and White Horse Pictures will handle international sales and White Horse will oversee North American rights.
Sources said the filmmakers have the blessing of the Pavarotti Estate, Universal Music Classics and Decca Records.
East and Nicholas Ferrall will serve as executive producers along with Paul Crowder, Monroe, Dickon Stainer, David Blackman, Didier Lupfer and Ron Halpern.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama about airline pilot Sully (Warner Bros.) far surpassed all expectations, making nearly $10 million more than my prediction with an opening weekend of $35 million in 3,525 theaters, also making it one of the biggest openings for a movie opening the weekend after Labor Day. The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. As expected, Relativity’s theatrical return with its own horror/thriller The Disappointments Room...
