When "Deadpool" opened to $132 million in North America over Valentine's Day weekend in 2016, everything changed for Ryan Reynolds. Up until that point of his career, he'd been an immensely appealing B-level star with A-list potential. His best shot at hitting the blockbuster big time came when he slipped on the power ring as Hal Jordan in 2011's "Green Lantern." When that not-as-bad-as-its-reputation-but-not-all-that-good-either $200 million gamble stalled out with a $220 million worldwide gross, Reynolds was back to being the wisecracking comedic engine of mostly ho-hum action movies and, on occasion, a very interesting actor in pretty good indie dramas.
That he hasn't made anything in that latter category of movies post-"Deadpool" is a bummer for those of us who think Reynolds has more to offer as a performer than a shotgun spray of smug quips in forgettable four-quadrant product like "Detective Pikachu" and "Free Guy." The "Deadpool" movies are clearly personal for Reynolds,...

Much like his films that are known to create a chasm between DC fans, Zack Snyder’s casting choices bore a similar effect — case in point, Ben Affleck’s Batman.
Ben Affleck as Batman | Warner Bros.
The Good Will Hunting Star‘s rendition of the Caped Crusader had viewers split from the get-go. While many lauded the playboy douche x man-tormented-by-his-demons persona that Affleck portrayed so effortlessly, others found it difficult to overlook the remorseless killing machine-esque aspect of his character. This is the crime-fighting vigilante we’re talking about, after all.
But there’s one thing fans appear to be unanimous about — Batman’s shocking, borderline outlandish plot armor.

Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 23 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.
In 2024, Cillian Murphy, 47, won for his portrayal of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the Best Picture champ “Oppenheimer.” He was the sixth Best Actor winner in a decade to prevail for playing a real person after Will Smith (“King Richard”), Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Gary Oldman (“The Darkest Hour”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), and Eddie Redmayne;. The four to win for fictional parts were Brendan Fraser, Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker), and Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”). Being recognized as the titan of the cinema industry, Christopher Nolan made his name known all around the world with his sci-fi masterpieces Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014) and, undoubtedly, with his epic box office killer Oppenheimer (2023).
After the director stepped into mainstream cinema with Batman Begins (2005), he made a thriller that still blows every cinephil’s mind. Even though it was released 18 years ago, it not only holds up today, but is considered to be the trickiest movie ever made.
Set in the 1890s, this 2016 film starts by introducing us to Alfred and Rupert, rival magicians who try to conquer London’s stage, as they’re both striving to create a perfect teleportation illusion. Their battle for supremacy goes too far, as they’re going not only to outperform, but to eventually destroy each other.
The tricks, rivalry and mystery are constantly engaging here, even though this thriller is rich in Nolan...

Director Ruben Fleischer, known for “Zombieland” and “Uncharted,” will helm the project, taking over from previous directors Jon M. Chu and Louis Leterrier. The film promises to reunite the original star-studded cast, including Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, and Morgan Freeman, who will reprise their roles as the enigmatic Four Horsemen and their allies.
In addition to the returning cast, “Now You See Me 3” will introduce several new faces to the franchise. Rosamund Pike, Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa, and Ariana Greenblatt are set to join the ensemble in yet-to-be-revealed roles, adding fresh talent to the mix.
While plot details remain under wraps, the film is expected to continue the franchise’s tradition of blending elaborate magic tricks with high-stakes heists and social justice themes. Jesse Eisenberg, in a recent interview, described the script as one that “celebrates intelligence” and is “non-violent but exciting,” suggesting a continuation of the series’ signature style.

The Four Horseman will be back in action next year as Lionsgate has slated Now You See Me 3 for a November 14, 2025 release. By the time the threequel comes out, it will have been nearly ten years since the release of the last movie.
Plot details for the magical heist sequel are being kept under wraps, but original cast members Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, and Morgan Freeman are all expected to reprise their roles. It was also announced earlier this year that Justice Smith (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers), Ariana Greenblatt (Borderlands), and Rosamund Pike (Saltburn) would be joining the project, with Pike said to be playing a “pivotal role” in the movie. I can imagine her being the latest target of the Four Horseman.

Back in 2004, the world saw Simon Pegg-starring hit movie that obviously set the bar high for so-called zom coms. Combined with the success of Cillian Murphy’s 28 Days Later (2002), it inspired filmmakers to speculate more on zombie apocalypses.
Indeed, you may have seen Nicholas Hoult’s Warm Bodies or Brad Pitt’s World War Z (both 2013) that were box office bangers at the time, but there was another movie that blended zombie horror, action and humor even better than Pegg’s comedy.

The State of the Race
While there may not have been any 2024 films that have premiered yet that feel like surefire Best Picture winners, there have already been a few Best Actor contenders that could go the distance.
Take Colman Domingo, for example, who is following his first Oscar nomination for his performance in Netflix biopic “Rustin” with “Sing Sing,” an A24 prison drama that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, all about the transformative power of art. As Divine G, Domingo displays a tenderness that seems sure...

The State of the Race
Despite the last two Best Director winners being Christopher Nolan and the filmmaker duo Daniels, for box office hits “Oppenheimer” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” respectively, commerciality is not as much a factor in determining what filmmakers are bound for an Oscar nomination as it is for what films are.
So something like “Kinds of Kindness” may be too niche and unconventional to win over the full Academy voting for a Best Picture nomination, but you should never count Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos out of...

A defining scene in Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s startling movie Evil Does Not Exist shows an adversarial meeting between the residents of an idyllic Japanese village and the representatives of an opportunistic Tokyo-based company. The two groups have gathered to discuss plans for the construction of a luxury camping site. To build goodwill for the project, the representatives, a pair of meek city dwellers, deploy banal commercialese to make their case. They use phrases like “optimize” and “invigorate” to describe what the site might bring to the area. They insist it will be “mutually beneficial.”
But these benefits, if they are even to be taken seriously, are one-sided. Life in this pastoral community depends on finely tuned interactions between humans and the environment. Throughout Evil Does Not Exist, Hamaguchi offers elegant glimpses of daily routines as evidence of this carefully navigated relationship. We see Takumi, a central character played with haunting ambiguity by Hitoshi Omika,...

Christopher Meloni had a small role in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, playing military general Nathan Hardy. However, when his casting news was first reported, many fans assumed that he was roped in for an important role in the Dceu. Based on his looks and acting capability, fans believed that he would make a fantastic Lex Luthor in the Superman film. Fans were in for a disappointment when the rumors turned out to be false.

The Superman movie Man of Steel featured several veteran actors, including Law & Order star Christopher Meloni. But when he was first announced to do the film, audiences initially thought he was cast as a major character.

In Man of Steel, audiences saw Meloni playing military general Nathan Hardy. It was a role that Meloni didn’t even have to audition for. The film’s director Zack Snyder simply thought he’d be right for the part.

What a difference a movie makes…

Jesse Eisenberg continues his evolution from actor to filmmaker with his second project, A Real Pain. The Eisenberg-directed and written film premiered at Sundance, and now the first official trailer for the dramedy, which he also stars in alongside Kieran Culkin, has arrived.
In the film, Eisenberg and Culkin play cousins (David and Benji) who take a trip to Poland in honor of their grandmother. The cousins navigate reuniting with each other as well as grappling with their family’s seemingly complicated history and dynamics. According to Deadline, the film...

Who would make for the more uncomfortable travel partner, Roman Roy or Mark Zuckerberg?
That’s a question you’ll ponder while watching the new trailer for “A Real Pain,” a road trip dramedy starring Emmy-winning “Succession” star Kieran Culkin and Oscar-nominated “The Social Network” star Jesse Eisenberg. Eisenberg is also the writer and director.
Eisenberg and Culkin play David and Benji, respectively. They’re cousins who are very different from each other and take a trip across Poland to honor their beloved late grandmother, who survived the Holocaust and escaped the country. Long-standing tensions between them resurface as they get deeper into their family history.
In addition to Eisenberg and Culkin, the cast includes Will Sharpe (“The White Lotus”), Jennifer Grey (“Dirty Dancing”), Kurt Egyiawan (“House of the Dragon”), Liza Sadovy (“A Small Light”), Daniel Oreskes (“Only Murders in the Building”), and Ellora Torchia (“Midsommar”). "We stay moving, we stay light, we stay agile." Searchlight Pictures has revealed the first look teaser trailer for A Real Pain, an award-winning indie film from the 2024 Sundance Film Festival written and directed by (and also starring) actor Jesse Eisenberg. It's set for a release in October later this year. Mismatched cousins David & Benji reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The trip takes a turn when the odd-couple's old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history. Sundance adds: "Eisenberg's intimate, resonant script complements the tension and humor of the two very different cousins’ tumultuous road trip with a sensitively drawn reckoning of the legacy of World War II among the survivors of survivors." Starring Jesse Eisenberg & Kieran Culkin, with Will Sharpe, Jennifer Grey, Kurt Egyiawan, Liza Sadovy, Daniel Oreskes. This was one of my favorite films out of Sundance this year, and...

Kieran Culkin follows up his run on the popular HBO series Succession with a new dramedy from Jesse Eisenberg. Eisenberg writes and directs A Real Pain, which has been collecting a bevy of accolades. In the Sundance review from our own Chris Bumbray, he glows about the film, saying, “A Real Pain is Jesse Eisenberg’s second film as a director and marks a substantial leap in quality since his pleasant – but minor – first effort, When You Finish Saving the World. With a tight running time, evocative location shooting, and two terrific performances at its heart, it’s no wonder this scored one of Sundance’s biggest deals, with Searchlight shelling out a cool $10 million for it.”
Searchlight Pictures has now released the teaser trailer for the odd couple film. The plot synopsis reads,
“Mismatched cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother.

One of the most acclaimed films coming out of the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year was A Real Pain, the second feature directed by Jesse Eisenberg. Featuring mismatched cousins David (Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) who reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother, the film was picked up by Searchlight Pictures for an October 18 release and now the first teaser trailer has landed.
Dan Mecca said in his review, “There’s something humble about Jesse Eisenberg writing, directing, and co-starring in a film, only to give its plum role to Kieran Culkin. Eisenberg, still, writes himself arguably the best scene in this picture; maybe the jury’s still out on the humble thing. Kieran Culkin is shedding his Roman Roy persona and swapping it for another annoying family member role: This time, as Jesse Eisenberg’s cousin in semi-autobiographical film “A Real Pain.”
Eisenberg writes, directs, and stars in the feature which debuted at Sundance 2024. The “Social Network” star plays David, who travels with his mismatched cousin Benji (Culkin) to Poland to honor their beloved late grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd-couple’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.
Will Sharpe, “Dirty Dancing” icon Jennifer Grey, Kurt Egyiawan, Liza Sadovy, and Daniel Oreskes also star.
Two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone produces the film, alongside Dave McCary, Ali Herting, Jennifer Semler, and Ewa Puszczyńska.
Writer/director/star Eisenberg told IndieWire while at Sundance that he actually never saw “Succession” before casting Emmy winner Culkin in the role. “My sister said to me, ‘There’s one person who...

A hiccup in the Hollywood studio machine has allowed indie films to flourish – and, crucially for cinemas, find a new generation of customers
This time last summer, British cinemas were holding their collective breath, looking forward to the biggest box office weekend of the year. “Barbenheimer” came to the rescue, with the doubleheader of blockbusters jointly chalking up an initial total of £30m when released in mid-July.
This summer is a different story. There may be no lucrative Barbie or Oppenheimer at hand, but the holiday months at the cinema look potentially more interesting, if not downright weird – at least when it comes to Sasquatch Sunset, this weekend’s new, grunting, wordless tale of mythical Bigfoot folk, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Elvis Presley’s granddaughter Riley Keough.

The Zellner brothers follow a family of grunting sasquatches played by Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough in a wonderful one-off that is equal parts crass humour and genuine poignancy
It might be one of the finest pieces of acting of the year so far. Near the end of Sasquatch Sunset, the gloriously weird feature from David and Nathan Zellner, Riley Keough wordlessly conveys a slowly creeping moment of profound existential despair that crushes your heart with its bleakness. It’s all the more impressive that she achieves this using her eyes alone, since her face and body are encased in a thick prosthetic layer of foam and straggly fake hair.
Keough plays one of the family of four sasquatches (the mythical creature also known as bigfoot) that the film follows over the course of a year as the primitive, grunting ape-like creatures lumber through the forests of the Pacific north-west of America.

While Kieran Culkin may be an Emmy-winning actor now, he didn’t realize that was a career he wanted to pursue until halfway through Succession season one.
The actor sat down with Jesse Eisenberg at a Tribeca Festival conversation, where they discussed their decades-long careers in the entertainment industry, their upcoming film A Real Pain and more.
When asked if he considered doing something besides acting, Culkin shared that he just talked about this with his longtime manager, Emily Gerson Saines, who told him that acting was kind of thrust on him because he has been doing it since he was 6.
“Suddenly, around the age of 20, I had a phone call with Emily, and she said, ‘Something, something, something, your career,'” he recalled. “I remember having a panic and going, ‘I have a fucking career?’ I was just a 6-year-old, and I was doing this, and I never once...

Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg talked, quipped, traded barbs and compliments and debated process in an hourlong wacky Tribeca Festival conversation tonight, having clearly bonded over A Real Pain. They star as mismatched cousins on a fraught road trip in the buzzy Sundance comedy set for fall release.
Eisenberg (Fleishman Is In Trouble) wrote and directed the film and said he’d never seen Culkin’s work before casting him. Or nothing recent. He acknowledged he’d seen Home Alone 17 times. The 1990 film was Culkin’s first feature. He played a small part alongside his brother, Macaulay Culkin. “I had no idea what the f–king movie was about” at the time, Culkin reminisced.
“You’re a magical person in my mind, because I don’t think I’ve ever really seen you in almost anything. And then, when I thought about you in the movie, I purposefully didn’t watch anything.

Even if you don’t recognize the name of Aaron Sorkin, his works certainly speak for him. We all know such cinema masterpieces as Tom Cruise’s A Few Good Men (1992), Jesse Eisenberg’s The Social Network (2010) and Brad Pitt’s Moneyball (2011).
It is Sorkin who is the author of these movies’ screenplays and who is known as a master of dialogue. However, few people know he was also very much of a TV showrunner, and his first dramedy series is still hailed by fans, almost 25 years later.
Its plot focuses on two employees of a fictional TV channel who start a sports news show aired at night and face the network’s constant pressure. However, the talent of its anchors is the main key for making it through the challenges of the TV.
The duo are also best friends in real life, and their friendship, romantic exploits, and behind-the-scenes...
