In a major setback, the Academy’s search for a 2025 Oscars host is in turmoil after rejections from top choices Jimmy Kimmel and John Mulaney. The double blow leaves the Academy scrambling to find a replacement who can rise to the challenge of Hollywood’s biggest night.
Jimmy Kimmel, who has hosted the last four ceremonies, has reportedly told ABC he will not return for another go. As the network’s late night staple, Kimmel brought familiarity and guided viewers deftly through 2017’s infamous Best Picture flub. His departure is a blow given his success steering previous shows.
Comedian John Mulaney was also approached following his meteoric rise, which includes acclaimed Netflix specials and hosting this year’s Governors Awards. However, scheduling conflicts prevent the multi-hyphenate from taking the reins.

What’s more surprising: the recent news that Michael Bay is turning the surreal and massively popular YouTube series “Skibidi Toilet” into a movie and television franchise, or the fact Tina Fey and her writers room never thought to have Tracy Jordan do something similarly insane?
When the Georgian YouTuber Alexey Gerasimov first started posting bizarro videos that he created using the popular sandbox video game Garry’s Mod in early 2023, members of the generations that made it through elementary school without making most of their formative memories in front of an iPad screen gawked at the outrageous view counts that each “Skibidi Toilet” video racked up in a startlingly short amount of time. Today, each new “Skibidi Toilet” release attracts tens of millions of clicks from kids old enough to navigate a touch screen but young enough to find a singing head twisting around in a toilet bowl to be peak content — thus,...

The Emmy races for Best Comedy Guest Actress and Best Comedy Guest Actor often result in massive surprises for awards pundits. Last year’s shockeroo victories for Judith Light of “Poker Face” and Sam Richardson of “Ted Lasso” are just the most recent examples. But this year, if Gold Derby’s Creative Arts predictions turn out to be accurate, there won’t be too many people with their jaws on the floor.
“The Bear” guest stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Jon Bernthal currently have overwhelming leads to win their two respective races for playing Donna Berzatto and Michael Berzatto, aka the mother and brother of Jeremy Allen White‘s Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto. Curtis enjoys 82/25 odds to prevail, while Bernthal is sitting pretty at 37/10 odds. Interestingly enough, both actors have submitted the episode “Fishes” for Emmy consideration — that’s the Christmas flashback hour from Season 2 which featured countless shouting matches and emotional moments.

Shawn Levy has long chafed at the labels Hollywood has placed upon him.
That helps explain the evolution of the Montreal-born filmmaker from go-to family comedy guy (Night at the Museum and Cheaper by the Dozen) to the producer of cerebral Oscar winners (Arrival) and cultural behemoths (Stranger Things).
After a string of successes in the aughts, Levy branched out with the 2011 Amblin-esque feature Real Steel, which earned nearly $300 million globally and showed he could bring his trademark emotionality to the action sphere. It also teamed him with Hugh Jackman, who, like others who have worked with the producer-director, says he creates an empathetic environment on set. “There isn’t one scene that necessarily was ‘the moment we clicked,’ ” Jackman recalls. “It was more a feeling on Real Steel that it made me know this was going to be a lifelong friendship.”

Ryan Gosling‘s episode of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” from April instantly went viral, thanks in no small part to his habit of laughing during many (all?) of his sketches. “Beavis and Butt-Head” with Mikey Day, “Close Encounter Cold Open” with Kate McKinnon, “The Engagement” with Andrew Dismukes, “Doctor” with Bowen Yang, “Erin Brockovich” with Chloe Fineman … the list goes on and on. Gosling has now been nominated for his first-ever Emmy nomination in the category of Best Comedy Guest Actor, which begs the question: Can he giggle his way all the way to the winner’s podium?
Gosling’s co-nominees this year are Jon Bernthal (“The Bear”), Matthew Broderick (“Only Murders in the Building”), Christopher Lloyd (“Hacks”), Bob Odenkirk (“The Bear”) and Will Poulter (“The Bear”). Gold Derby’s initial Emmy predictions lean toward a Bernthal victory, but there are still two months to go before the Creative...

Don’t get Donald Glover wrong — he had a great experience writing for 30 Rock. But when it came time to put together his own writers’ room for Atlanta, he said on this week’s episode of Hot Ones, “one thing at 30 Rock that I didn’t want as much of — because I feel like it was a thing from SNL — was fear.”
A writers’ room on a comedy show is inherently a scary place, Glover explained. He laughed as he remembered a seemingly innocuous moment from his early sitcom experience. “One time I came into the 30 Rock room, and I had a new hat on,” he said. “I just had a hat. They came in, and one of the writers goes, ‘Hat.’ And I couldn’t wear the hat! They’re just funny people. I was like, ‘You’re right. I was trying something new. I’m ashamed.

Donald Glover has already deemed the opportunity to be a “Saturday Night Live” cast member a bullet he “dodged,” but now the multi-hyphenate creator is detailing just how much “SNL” impacted “30 Rock.”
The NBC sitcom was created by “SNL” alum Tina Fey and satirized working on a sketch series at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, where “SNL” is filmed. But according to Glover, there were more parallels behind-the-scenes than just the meta mocking.
“Even though I had such a great time at ’30 Rock,’ one thing at ’30 Rock’ that I didn’t want as much of, because I feel like it was kind of a thing from ‘SNL,’ was fear,” Glover said during a recent appearance on “Hot Ones” from First We Feast. “Writers’ rooms are a scary place. Over the past few years, with the rise of the social-media marketing ecosystem, the word “authenticity” has been increasingly integrated into the pop culture consciousness. As used by brands in pitch meetings and slide decks, it’s an ineffable commodity possessed by a rarified few in the creator space who seem to start trends, rather than follow them. According to brands, it’s the reason why followers connect with certain influencers — not, as one would otherwise suspect, because of their predilection for posting bikini photos or selfies with rappers and NHL players.

"Saturday Night Live" is a comedy institution that has been on the air for nearly a half-century. Soon, the series will be celebrating its milestone 50th season, which will include a star-studded anniversary celebration coming to NBC in February 2025. Even if you're one of those people who (wrongly) tells people that "SNL" isn't funny anymore, you can't deny that the late night sketch comedy series has cultivated some of the most brilliant comedic minds in modern Hollywood history -- whether it's the rough edges of live TV comedy innovation that came with the likes of Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Bill Murray, and Gilda Radner in the 1970s or the off-kilter shenanigans of Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Chris Farley, and Adam Sandler in the '90s. (Even the troublesome 1980s years under the supervision of producer Dick Ebersol gave us Eddie Murphy and Martin Short.)

In the glamorous realm of Hollywood awards shows, few moments have gotten etched in history, like the playful banter between Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and their constant target, George Clooney. Rewind to the 2014 Golden Globes, Fey and Poehler initially sent shockwaves with their razor-sharp wit aimed at the eternal bachelor Clooney.

A playful take on the dishy celebrity cameo, John Cena’s part in “The Bear” is an acquired taste.

It’s a jarring scene that has drawn cheers as well as criticism online. Some audiences are delighted to see Cena in their favorite TV show. By box office and general reputation, he’s a crowd favorite if there ever was one, even among non-wrestling fans. Others, however, have...

Other than acute behind-the-scenes anxiety, one of Saturday Night Live’s longest-running traditions is the “Five-Timers Club,” a prestigious clique for celebrities who have hosted the show at least five times.
But it turns out it’s all a lie. Wake up sheeple!
The Five-Timers Club obviously began as a joke, part of Tom Hanks’ opening monologue during his fifth SNL appearance in 1990. The mere suggestion that hosting SNL five times was a benchmark worthy of a membership card, a luxurious robe and access to “one of the most exclusive clubs in the world” was meant to be laughable. I mean, the first sketch literally finds Jon Lovitz taking lunch orders and throwing out Ralph Nader.
According to Robert Smigel, the inspiration for the sketch, which he co-wrote for Conan O’Brien, was Hanks’ impression of Lorne Michaels waxing poetically about what it’s like to host SNL each time. “I...

Will Forte is checking into The Four Seasons comedy series starring Tina Fey, Steve Carell, and more
The upcoming reimagining of The Four Seasons needs to make some room because Will Forte is checking in. Universal Television is producing the all-new series adaptation from Tina Fey, Land Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield. Forte joins Fey, Steve Carell, Colman Domingo, Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Erika Henningsen for the show written by Fey, Fisher, and Wigfield.
The Four Seasons, a retread of the 1981 Universal movie of the same name, is a co-creation between Fey, her 30 Rock co-star Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield. Details about Forte’s character remain a mystery, though the cast list for Alan Alda’s 1981 comedy could provide some clues. In 1981’s The Four Seasons, three couples vacation together every season. After one couple divorces, feelings of betrayal and more spawn criticisms of one another, but the things that keep them together are stronger than those that might tear them apart. Alan Alda directed and wrote the 1981 version,...

The great Frederick Wiseman gave writers some famous advice, which “Between The Temples” co-writer C. Mason Wells brought up at a Morning Coffee panel at the 2024 Nantucket Film Festival: “Marry rich.”
Nantucket and its $28 hamburgers probably isn’t a bad place to hunt for someone with that sort of financial independence — but in fairness to the Nantucket Film Festival, it also has had an abiding love for writers and the craft of writing’s contribution to the filmmaking process. Its awards celebrate both emerging and established screenwriters and television writers.
In the 2024 edition of the festival, there was an interesting mix of frank conversation about the still tenuous, crowded reality of filmmaking in the aftermath of the WGA and SAG strikes; and there was also a lot of celebration of how being in community with other filmmakers makes everyone’s storytelling a little better. Many a comedian has gotten their start or boosted their career on Saturday Night Live. The sketch television show has provided commentary on historical happenings and popular culture since October 1975. The 50th anniversary of the series approaches, as does the 2024 presidential election, full of commentary opportunities and sketches.
While hosts and musical guests — in some cases the same celebrity who pulls double duty — keep the show current with actors promoting works and musicians promoting albums, a group of cast members has always been the staple backdrop for the rotation of guests. Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis as well as Elf star Will Ferrell came up on SNL as did Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Actors like Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Billy Crystal. Martin Short and more contributed to the laughter of the sketch comedy show. Even late night hosts Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon appeared in skits.

Returning from an almost two-year break in March, all three seasons of Girls5eva are currently on Netflix. And while the show didn’t manage to crack the streamer’s desirable (albeit kind of mysterious) Top 10, creator and showrunner Meredith Scardino says she’s thrilled with opening up her cult comedy to a massive global subscriber base — even if there’s still no official word on a potential fourth season.

Lorne Michaels Addresses ‘SNL’ Retirement Rumors: “I’m Going to Do It as Long as I Feel I Can Do It”
Lorne Michaels this week addressed discussion of his rumored retirement from Saturday Night Live ahead of the show’s 50th anniversary.
“I’m going to do it as long as I feel I can do it,” the SNL creator told the New York Times. “But I rely on other people and always have.”
Michaels, 79, has not announced any plans to retire, but speculation that his departure is imminent has grown in recent months as the show prepares to celebrate its half century birthday. In May, the network announced plans for a three-hour primetime special set for next February.
Michaels said in 2023 that his replacement “could easily be Tina Fey,” but that “there are a lot of people who are there now who are also, you know [could be good].”
Elsewhere in the profile, Michaels also shared his words of wisdom from 50 years of observing comedy’s greatest stars build their careers.

“Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels continued to shoot down retirement rumors as he readies the NBC sketch comedy series for its upcoming 50th season. He told the New York Times in a new interview: “I’m going to do it as long as I feel I can do it. But I rely on other people and always have.”
Michaels also reflected on the challenges that come with being an “SNL” cast member. Through the show, he has helped launch the careers of dozens of comedy superstars, including Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrell and Tina Fey.
“If you were the funniest kid in the class, or your school, and then you’re working professionally and everyone else in the room is that,” he said. “It can be upsetting or can be really stimulating.”

If Paula Pell had her way, “Girls5Eva” would be one of the longest-running comedies on television.
“I could do it for 15 seasons, and I’d be tapping my foot like, ‘What’s the news on 16?’” Pell told TheWrap. Part of that passion has to do with the talent behind the series, which moved from Peacock to Netflix for its third season. Created by Meredith Scardino and executive produced by the team of Robert Carlock, Tina Fey and Jeff Richmond, the series centers on Pell, Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry and Busy Philipps.
“Girls5Eva” follows a girl group that used to be big in the 2000s but has since been shoved aside. Decades after disbanding, these now middle-aged women reunite to take another shot at becoming pop stars. Pell portrays Gloria, the group member who used to be closeted and who spends most of Season 3 sleeping with her various fans while touring on the road.

When Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez announced their engagement in 2002, many people doubted their marriage would last. Their romance was under constant scrutiny and Lopez had just ended her second marriage. Affleck said that a joke Tina Fey made about them on Saturday Night Live was the perfect demonstration of how people felt about his relationship.
Ben Affleck shared the joke that represented the way the public felt about him and Jennifer Lopez
When Affleck proposed to Lopez, she was still not officially divorced from her second husband, Cris Judd. Because of this, Affleck knew their romance would be the subject of much criticism.
“There were a million reasons not to,” Affleck told Vanity Fair in 2003. “Neither of us is so obtuse that we didn’t understand the degree of skepticism, the amount of sniggering in how the joke would be received.”

Jimmy Fallon has renewed his deal with NBCUniversal, holding onto his position as the host of “The Tonight Show” through 2028.
The extension comes just after Fallon’s 10-year anniversary on the show, which NBC celebrated with a two-hour primetime special on May 14.
Fallon has been an NBC mainstay since 1998, when he joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live.” He remained on the late night sketch show for six seasons, hosting “Weekend Update” alongside Tina Fey from 2000 to 2004, at which point he left the show to pursue a film career. For three seasons, first on Peacock and then on Netflix, the titular band in “Girls5Eva” has relentlessly pursued the comeback success that perhaps only they think they deserve. “Do you want to sit on me?” Joey King asks Taylor Zakhar Perez as he walks on set for their photo shoot. Well, it is called “Actors on Actors.” Zakhar Perez strikes a pose, and for the next 20 minutes, the “Kissing Booth” co-stars (who’ve since become best friends) pal around, pulling silly faces and contorting themselves into surprisingly sultry positions on top of and underneath the Victorian dinner-party set.
King and Zakhar Perez offer a window into their unique world as they sit down to discuss their latest roles — Emmy-nominated King portraying a young Jewish woman whose family is torn apart by the onset of World War II in the Hulu miniseries “We Were the Lucky Ones” and Zakhar Perez as the son of the U.S. president who finds love with a British prince, played by Nicholas Galitzine, in the rom-com “Red, White & Royal Blue” for Prime Video.

‘Mean Girls’ Broadway Star Erika Henningsen Joins Tina Fey Netflix Series ‘Four Seasons’ (Exclusive)
Erika Henningsen is re-teaming with Tina Fey on the latter’s upcoming Netflix series “The Four Seasons,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Henningsen and Fey previously worked together on the Broadway musical version of “Mean Girls,” for which Fey wrote the book based on the movie of the same name she also wrote. Henningsen originated the role of Cady Heron in the original Broadway production. Henningsen also recurred in “Girls5Eva,” the Peacock series that recently moved to Netflix, on which Fey is an executive producer.
Henningsen will star opposite Fey in the series as well as Steve Carell and Colman Domingo. The show is based on the 1981 film of the same name that was directed by and starred Alan Alda with Carol Burnett, Rita Moreno, Sandy Dennis, and Len Cariou also among the cast members. The series was first announced in January with an eight-episode order and is slated to begin production later this year.

Henningsen originated the role of Cady Heron in the original Broadway production. Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang have had diverse paths on Saturday Night Live. While Thompson has been a staple since 2003, making him the longest-tenured cast member in the show’s history, Yang entered the scene first as a writer in 2018 before joining the cast a year later. His arrival marked a significant milestone: he became the first Chinese American player on SNL. The two have navigated their roles by listening and adapting. Thompson recalls his early days on the show where he learned by observing iconic members like Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey. He notes that absorbing their techniques,...

Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang have had very different “Saturday Night Live” trajectories. And yet, they both have made history. Thompson, who joined the show in 2003, is the longest-tenured cast member in the show’s history. When Yang joined, first as a writer in 2018 then moving to the cast the following year, he became the first Chinese American “SNL” player.
Despite joining the show 15 years apart, they adapted in a similar way: by listening.
Thirty years ago, Thompson was on the premiere of “All That,” the kids’ version of “SNL” that aired on Nickelodeon in the 1990s. “To have Kenan be at the show now is only a sign that he has the foresight, fortitude and forbearance to just be a pure master at this,” says Yang. He turned to his co-star: “I don’t take it for granted that I sit next to you at read-through. I absorb so much just being in proximity.

Actress Katrina Bowden recalled her most-embarrassing moment on 30 Rock in her new uInterview.
The 2006-2013 half-hour comedy 30 Rock, inspired by the behind-the-scenes antics at Saturday Night Live, revolves around Liz Lemon, the head writer for a live sketch comedy series in New York City.
One of her favorite memories from her time on the show was also her most embarrassing. “I remember in one of the earlier seasons,” she told uinterview founder Erik Meers, “there was a scene where they were filming in Kenneth’s apartment for the first time. Jack McBrayer took me around the set because he had to bring some personal family photos. They had to decorate it and everything, and he wanted us to see. I was so much younger than everybody on that cast; I think I was 18 at the time, or maybe 19, and I knew he had had these family pictures that...
