Julia Louis-Dreyfus is assuring fans that Vice President Kamala Harris loves the “Veep” resurgence after announcing her presidential campaign.
Louis-Dreyfus, who starred as a fictional first female Vice President in the Emmy-winning HBO series from 2012 to 2019, told Entertainment Weekly that she is “delighted” by how the show has become even more relevant amid the 2024 election.
“It’s been a wild thing to witness. Viewership went up something insane like 350 percent,” Louis-Dreyfus said while promoting her MCU installment “Thunderbolts” at Comic-Con. “I’m delighted. I’m happy people are getting a kick out of it. And I know that Kamala Harris is — big time.”
Season 1 of “Veep” got a 353 percent increase in viewership on Monday, July 22, according to Luminate. The Max streaming records reflect a boost after President Biden announced he was stepping out of the presidential race and endorsing Vice President Harris for the Democratic nomination.

“I was inspired by the concept of examining the slice of life moment of a pandemic,” The Decameron showrunner Kathleen Jordan says to The Hollywood Reporter about the inspiration behind the new Netflix show.
The dark comedy, which released on the streaming platform last week, is loosely based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s short story collection set during the Black Death. The Decameron finds a group of characters, both nobles and servants, making their way to a villa in the Italian countryside in an attempt to wait out the plague.
While a plague-set show isn’t typically a touted as a “wine-soaked sex romp,” as The Decameron is, the Zosia Mamet and Tony Hale-led show manages to land laughs during a bleak time period.
“I wish that I could say there was a lot of intentionality behind it, but I think if you were to ask me to write a space drama,...

I hope you’ve stretched and are well hydrated, because you’re going to need it for the marathon of TV that lies ahead. Friday marks the official beginning of the 2024 Paris Olympics, which means we’ve got more than two weeks of impressive physical feats across 32 sports and 45 disciplines that will inspire you while putting your athletic prowess to shame.
It all begins with the opening ceremony, which for the first time in history is taking place outside of a stadium. The parade of athletes that is the centerpiece of the event will occur on the Seine, with each nation’s delegates having their own boat. It is unclear whether the size of the watercraft is determined by the size of the delegation, but it would probably be funnier that way. LeBron James and Coco Gauff are the flag bearers for the United States.

"Veep” creator Armando Iannucci is “worried” that the 2024 election is stranger than fiction, particularly his fictional Emmy-winning HBO satirical political series.
Iannucci wrote an opinion piece for the New York Times in which he compared incumbent President Joe Biden exiting his re-election campaign in lieu of new Democratic candidate and current Vice President Kamala Harris running. The switch before the primaries reflects the plotline of HBO series “Veep,” which premiered in 2012 and ran for seven seasons before ending in May 2019. Julia Louis-Dreyfus starred as the titular vice president Selina Meyer who later became the president.
“As soon as President Biden dropped out of the race, leaving his vice president to take on the candidacy, a pile-on of news organizations tracked me down to ask for comment. We all have that friend — or we are that friend — who’s always being treated like a doormat. For Tony Hale, who’s famous for playing lovably codependent characters in comedies like Veep and Arrested Development, his role in The Decameronis an opportunity to take that neediness to new heights (and lows).
“The word for me was desperation,” Hale tells Tudum, summing up the best description for his character Sirisco. When The Decameron opens in 1348, the pestilence has hit Italy hard, and a group of wealthy nobles and their servants run off to a rural getaway for an escape … and to party. Catering to the guests’ every whim, while hiding that his master actually died of the bubonic plague before their arrival, is Hale’s Sirisco.

If you’re as terminally online as I am, you see Tony Hale’s face every day.
The actor best known for “Veep” and “Arrested Development” is a household name for comedy fans, even if he enjoys a degree of anonymity in his day-to-day.
“People are just really nice,” he told IndieWire, along with an anecdote of the previous night when a restaurant hostess shared her appreciation of his work. “But then — my wife is from Alabama — I go to Alabama and no one’s watching or has watched ‘Veep’ or ‘Arrested.’ So it’s not that kind of really high fame.”
It’s the kind of fame that prompts people to shout “Buster!” at him in the street, or character-specific things like “You’ve got two hands” — the kind of fame that comes from being on two heavily-memed shows, at least one of which was all over social media...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Decameron, Season 1.] Netflix‘s new raunchy dramedy, The Decameron whisks viewers away to the 14th-century Italian countryside for a retreat like no other as nobles attempt to avoid the plague by killing their time at a lavish villa. But as a collection of eclectic individuals inhabit the home, the villa’s head is nowhere to be found, having died of the disease himself, leaving bride-to-be Pampinea (Zosia Mamet), joined by her handmaiden Misia (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), they’re left to deal with the villa’s steward, Sirisco (Tony Hale) who is sucked into Pampinea’s orbit. Other guests at the villa include Licisca (Tanya Reynolds), who poses as her employer Filomena (Jessica Plummer) after pushing her off a bridge into water. When the real Filomena arrives, she’s believed to be a servant and treated as such, suddenly realizing how poorly she’d treated Licisca. In other words, it’s...

The Decameron is a medieval black comedy series created by Kathleen Jordan. Based on the 14th-century Italian short-story collection of the same name by author Giovanni Boccaccio, the Netflix series is set in 1348, when the Black Death was destroying Florence. It follows the story of a few nobles who lock themselves away with servants in a countryside villa. In the beginning, everything goes swimmingly but soon something turns their retreat into a fight for survival. The Decameron stars Zosia Mamet, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Tanya Reynolds, Amar Chadha-Patel, Leila Farzad, Lou Gala, Karan Gill, Tony Hale, Douggie McMeekin, and Jessica Plummer. So, if you love the wild comedy and historic setting in The Decameron, here are some similar shows you could watch next.

Modern television has provided ample evidence that time does not dictate genre. The Emmys learned this the hard way, when they tried to bypass the comedy or drama debates by using runtimes to decide category placement, only to be swarmed by even more controversy during their confounding, seemingly arbitrary appeals process. Yes, it turns out half-hour shows can be dramas and hourlong shows can skew comedic. Look no further than some of TV’s buzziest, best shows: “The White Lotus”, “Succession”, and “The Bear” (let’s not start that up again).
But while time may not determine what a series is labeled, it does often weigh heavily on a series’ success. More important than shoving a show into one box or another is recognizing that many of these shows are successful because they blur the lines. “The Bear” serves up intense kitchen scenarios that can skew toward sitcom set-ups, yet...

The Decameron begins with an invitation.
Visconte Leonardo invites a group of (mostly single) nobles to escape the bubonic plague ravaging 1348 Florence and reside at his Italian countryside oasis.
The honored guests include his bride-to-be Pampinea (Zosia Mamet) and her loyal handmaiden Misia (Saoirse-Monica Jackson); Panfilo (Karan Gill) and his pious wife Neifile (Lou Gala); Tindaro (Douggie McMeekin) and his doctor Dioneo (Amar Chadha-Patel); and his cousin Filomena (Jessica Plummer) who brings her servant –– and secret half-sister! –– Licisca (Tanya Reynolds).
When every guest turns up with their own hidden agenda, Leonardo’s humble steward Sirisco (Tony Hale) and cook Stratilia (Leila Farzad) are there to greet them. Why isn’t Leonardo there, you ask? Well, hold your horse-drawn carriages, because Leonardo has actually died, long before any of the guests even arrive. And that’s just the beginning of the pandemonium that ensues when nobles and merchants and servants are...

The plot begins after “The Black Death strikes hard in the Italian countryside in 1348, and a handful of nobles retreat to a grand villa with their servants. But what starts as a wine-soaked sex romp descends into a race for survival in this soapy dark comedy,” according to the official description.

As the Black Death swept across medieval Italy, a group of nobles sought refuge from the devastation. In 1348, wealthy landowner Leonardo extended an invitation to fellow aristocrats hoping to outrun the plague—come shelter at my estate in the countryside, far from the disease-ridden city streets.
Thus a disparate dozen found themselves within the high walls of Leonardo’s luxurious villa, overlooking rolling vineyards. While cities burned with sickness, this remote haven promised respite.
Yet escaping the plague did not guarantee escaping drama. Trapped together for who knew how long personalities and pasts collided. Leonardo’s intended, the anxious Pampinea, arrived desperate to wed before her youth faded. Snobbish Filomena dragged along her faithful servant Licisca, who secretly dreamed of more. The devout Neifile and ambitious Panfilo brought their own tensions.
Even the servants harbored secrets, like Stratilia protecting the home’s true fate. With death knocking outside, would secrets stay buried?...

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has now become the highest grossing animated film ever, surpassing Frozen 2. More on it below.
Inside Out 2 has been a much needed hit for Pixar and it’s also a bloody good film. Shortly after the film’s release, it became the highest grossing film of 2024 and it’s now the highest grossing animated film in history, as reported by Variety. Not too shabby.
The Pixar sequel shattered the record formerly held by Disney’s Frozen 2, released in 2019. Inside Out 2, released in June to rave reviews, only took six weeks to claim the title. Its global box office takings hover at around $1.46bn. That’s a billion, not million. It also took the sequel only 19 days to break the magical billion dollar limit. In comparison, Frozen 2 grossed $1.45bn during its theatrical run.
Inside Out 2 follows the emotions in teenage girl Riley’s head.

The thumbnail image for The Decameron on the Netflix app depicts a naked man charging toward a lake, his backside demurely pixelated out. The image jibes with the streamer’s description of the comedy series as “a wine-soaked sex romp in the Italian countryside.” But the scene pictured is actually the only bit of nudity in The Decameron, which fails to deliver anything remotely steamy, scandalous, or even satirically sexy.
Inspired by 14th-century Italian author’s Giovanni Boccaccio’s short story collection of the same name, The Decameron revolves around a group of Italian nobles who retreat to a Tuscan villa to wait out the horrors of the bubonic plague. Some of them bring servants, all of them bring secrets, and pretty soon their countryside retreat is rife with lies, schemes, and illicit love affairs.

As Netflix’s The Decameron begins, nearly all of our characters are retreating. They might not put it in quite those terms, but it’s exactly what these characters are doing: flocking to the “beautiful, not-infected countryside,” as one character puts it, in hopes of waiting out the Black Plague currently tearing through the continent.
But it doesn’t matter how hard they try to get into “the holiday state of mind,” or how desperately some of them might hope to reorient their fortunes while away. It almost doesn’t even matter how insistently real life intrudes on their getaway. The Decameron is a fitfully funny, occasionally poignant testament to the truism that no matter the circumstances, people will always find a way to be people, in all our petty or horny or heroic glory.

Animated motion picture history is upon us, friends! Pixar‘s Inside Out 2 is the highest-grossing animated film ever after surpassing Disney’s Frozen 2 at the global box office. The emotionally charged sequel achieved this milestone after six weeks of release, with a total domestic value of $601 million and $861 million internationally, totaling $1.46 billion! This astonishing achievement unseats Disney’s Frozen 2 after the sing-a-long sequel banked $1.45 billion at the box office. Disney’s The Lion King remake made an astounding $1.65M, but the Jon Favreau-directed film is technically a live-action CGI hybrid.
Looking at the numbers, Inside Out 2 beat Greta Gerwig’s Barbie in ticket sales, becoming the 13th-biggest movie ever. It is also the fastest animated movie to surpass the $1 billion mark after 19 days of release. Moreover, Pixar’s sequel is the highest-grossing film of 2024.
Inside Out 2 is one of the biggest Hollywood successes of all time for many factors.

Already the most successful worldwide theatrical release of 2024, Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is now the highest-grossing animated film of all time, with $1.462 billion to date at the global box office. In addition to surpassing Disney’s Frozen 2 ($1.454 billion) on the animated chart, the film has also moved into the #13 spot in the all-time industry global box office rankings.
Now in its sixth week of release, the film also crossed $600 million at the domestic box office yesterday and has remained in the top three titles throughout its run. Inside Out 2 has brought in $861 million internationally and is set to open in its final market, Japan, next week.
Other box office records and milestones include the fastest animated film to $1 billion globally (19 days), the highest-grossing movie of 2024 to date and the only one to cross $1 billion, the biggest global animation opening of all time ($292 million), and the...

Ecstatic. Incredible. Gleeful. Overjoyed. Take your pick.
Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has iced out fellow Disney release Frozen II to become the top-grossing Hollywood animated film of all time at the worldwide box office after finishing Tuesday with $1.462 billion, not adjusted for inflation. The film’s domestic total stands at $601 million, while it has grossed $861.8 million internationally.
Disney Animation’s Frozen II topped out at $1.451 billion in 2019. It now rests at No. 2 on the all-time animated list followed by Illumination and Universal’s video game adaptation The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.361 billion), the first Frozen ($1.274 billion), Pixar’s Incredibles 2 ($1.242 billion), Illumination’s Minions ($1.157 billion), Toy Story 4 ($1.072 billion), Despicable Me 3 ($1.032 billion) and Finding Dory ($1 billion).
Among all films, Inside Out 2 laughed its way past Warner Bros.’ 2023 summer juggernaut Barbie ($1.446 billion) on Monday to land at No. 13 on the list of all time grossing films, animated or otherwise.

Veep has entered the chat. But really, has it ever left?
You could say Veep officially unsubscribed when the beloved HBO series ended in mid-2019. “We were racing out the door,” recalls David Mandel of the Emmy-winning political comedy starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus wrapping its run after seven seasons.
Mandel, who took over as showrunner in season five from creator Armando Iannucci, steered the series into the Trump era and bowed out ahead of the 2020 election. “So much of the show had become strangely different because of how much Donald Trump changed politics,” he says.
But now there is something different in the air. I’ve chatted with the showrunner regularly since he took over at Veep in 2016, and in the years after the show went off the air. But today he’s saying something new and surprising.
“Politics seem fun again,” he says.
Did I hear that right?

Netflix is dropping a new show this summer that takes a classic old story and spins it into something fresh. “The Decameron” premieres on July 25th, and it’s blending history with modern storytelling in a really cool way.
The show is based on a famous book from the 1400s by an Italian dude named Giovanni Boccaccio. His book, also called “The Decameron,” follows a group of fancy nobles escaping from a nasty plague by telling each other stories for 10 days. This plague, called the Black Death, was sweeping through Italy and everybody was super scared. So these nobles hole up in a nice country house to avoid getting sick.
While there, they pass the time by picking a king or queen each night who gets to pick a theme for the stories. Over the next few hours, each noble has to spin a yarn that fits the theme. Boccaccio...

Inspired by the 14th century Italian short-story collection The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio, the new Netflix series from Kathleen Jordan tells the story of a group of nobles and their servants as they retreat to the countryside Villa Santa in 1348 as the Black Death ravages Florence. There is a “Veep” group chat, but it has not been blowing up with political headlines of late.
In an interview with IndieWire on the day after President Joe Biden withdrew himself from the upcoming election, “Veep” star Tony Hale was keenly aware of the show’s position in how people relate to and digest American politics. But Hale, who stars in Netflix’s upcoming “The Decameron,” said that the friendships he formed on Armando Ianucci’s series have little to do with DC gossip these days, despite the memes of him and Julia Louis-Dreyfus that are all over social media.
“There were a lot of surprises on the show, and there’s been a lot of surprises this week,” Hale said. “Maybe it’s because we got really, really close on ‘Veep,’ [but] when we talk, we don’t really talk about that. We just love to catch up. My...

Created by Kathleen Jordan, and executive produced by Jenji Kohan, this absurdist Netflix comedy series is very loosely inspired by the 14-century story collection titled The Decameron.
The Decameron examines the all-too-timely theme of class struggles in the season of a pandemic. In the year 1348, the Black Death strikes hard in the city of Florence, and a handful of nobles retreat with their servants to a grand villa to wait out the plague with a lavish holiday. But as social rules wear thin, a scramble for survival ensues, brought to life by a cast of characters both cunning and outrageous.
HeyUGuys spoke to creator Kathleen Jordan and cast members Tony Hale, Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education), Zosia Mamet (Girls), Jessica Plummer, and Saoirse-Monica Jackson about their experience working on such an innovative comedy.
The 8-episode series hits the streamer on July 25th.

When Harley Quinn’s Poison Ivy (voice of Lake Bell) finally ended up partnered in both supervillainy and love with the titular Harley (Kaley Cuoco), fans rejoiced. Showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker promised the couple will never break up. Harley and Ivy started their fourth season last summer as current TV’s longest-running queer couple. There was, however, one person their new love left behind: Ivy’s former fiancé Chuck Brown, better known as Kite Man. In fact, Ivy might have never been brave enough to pursue a life with Harley without Kite Man’s intervention. He was the only one at his wedding willing to acknowledge that Ivy didn’t actually love him and, during their vows, answered the officiant’s prompt with a “Hell… no.”

Awards season may well be over on the film front for another year, but on the TV front, the race for golden statue glory is far from over. Earlier today at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, the nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced in a live ceremony fronted by Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph alongside Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. And leading the pack on the nominations front this time around? That'd be feudal Japanese epic Shōgun which, after a dramatic pivot from Limited Series to Drama after news of the series' surprise renewal, has bagged 25 nominations, including nods for stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai as well as shouts for Outstanding Drama, Writing, Direction, and much more besides.

The 76th Primetime Emmy nominations were announced on Wednesday morning, July 17, by Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph. It was a year of tremendous turnover with academy favorites like “Succession” and “Ted Lasso” going off the air and other programs like “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us” going on hiatus. That opened the door for new and returning shows to achieve historic windfalls.

"The Bear” sets new record — With 23 nominations, “The Bear” is now the comedy series with the most nominations in a single year. The previous record holder was “30 Rock,” which was nominated 22 times in 2009. What’s especially impressive about the show’s total is that it could have done even better. It didn’t max out its potential in acting categories, for instance, missing potential supporting acting bids for Abby Elliott and Oliver Platt. Perhaps season three will...

As this morning’s Emmy nominations prove, there may be less TV being made nowadays, but the quality certainly hasn’t declined with the quantity.
As widely expected, The Bear, Baby Reindeer, True Detective: Night Country and Shōgun were mentioned more than once by past Emmy winners Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale on Wednesday morning. As Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego said, “it was an exceptional year in television.” It certainly seemed exceptional that, for the first time in a long while, the names Succession and Ted Lasso were not heard when the nominations were read, as those multiple winners have wrapped up their runs.

TV fans, it’s time to celebrate your favorite shows and performers once again. Just a few months after the 2023 Emmys aired in January, the Television Academy’s members revealed their nominees for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, with Abbott Elementary‘s Sheryl Lee Ralph and Veep‘s Tony Hale revealing this year’s picks for top honors contention at the 2024 Emmys. While some fan favorites were not eligible for this year’s nominations due to timing, a lot of broadcast, cable, and streaming favorites were in contention. As expected, The Bear was the most heavily nominated comedy show, but just how much of a lead the FX/Hulu drama got was a shocker: The show got a record-breaking 23 nominations (overtaking the previous record of 22 nominations for 30 Rock) this year. Meanwhile, Shōgun led the pack on the drama side with 25 nominations. Check out the full list of this year’s Emmy nominations below.

The upcoming nominations for the best in television have been announced. The list of this year’s nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmys has been announced today by actors Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale in Hollywood. This year’s event has a rare distinction of taking place less than a year after the last event, which had been postponed to January of this year due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes that lasted for a bigger part of the summer and fall in 2023. Last year’s Emmys included winners from such shows as The Bear, Abbott Elementary and HBO’s massively popular series Succession. The ceremony is set to take place on September 15, exactly eight months after the 75th Primetime Emmys were presented on Fox. The Hollywood Reporter has listed the nominations for this year, so here are the 2024 Emmy nominees:

Emmy voters are paying attention. The Television Academy announced nominations for the 76th Emmys on Wednesday morning, and the announcement was filled with historic-making choices and several critically acclaimed names and titles that had been overdue for recognition.
Leading the charge was FX’s “Shogun,” which scored a stunning 25 nominations (including limited series) and scored first-time acting nominations for stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. It was an amazing morning for FX, which landed 93 noms all together — helped also by the record-breaking 23 nominations (the most in Emmy history) for its comedy series “The Bear.”
"The Bear” was already an Emmy superstar, having landed 10 wins in 2023 — making it the most Emmys won by a series in its first season. This time, “The Bear” stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce and Liza Colón-Zayas all received acting nods.

Two Emmy Award ceremonies in one year? The TV industry is going through a lot right now, but there’s something to be said for the shorter interval between Emmy celebrations in 2024 while awards season catches up with the timeline of 2023’s Hollywood strikes. January’s Emmy Awards honored television shows that completed their seasons between June 2022 and May 2023, and September’s ceremony will pick up right after that, with eligible shows premiering between June 2023 and May 2024.
Sheryl Lee Ralph (ABC’s “Abbott Elementary”) and Tony Hale (Netflix’s upcoming “The Decameron”) announced the nominees on July 16 for the 76th Annual Emmy Awards, which will take place on September 15.
