Inside Power Publicist’s Career Switch: Launching a Lifestyle and Home Goods Company with Cali Flair
When it came time to name their new company, Alison Rou and Sarah Tallman looked to the citrus family.
It became an obvious choice considering their respective histories. Rou, a power publicist who specialized in representing showrunners and producers, hails from a line of citrus growers and has a home surrounded by orange groves in Ojai, California. Tallman, a veteran of the beauty space with tenures at Estee Lauder and Saie, went to school in Florida and once ran a store in New York City called Grove.
Cara Cara LA was born in November 2023, launched with a focus on gift sets and sustainable dried flowers. With Rou’s industry experience, Hollywood came calling and they were off and running with talent gifting and local pop-ups. Now the rest of the world can get in on the action as the pair expanded their business in late June with a new launch called Casa Cara,...

As My So-Called Life nears its 30th anniversary, Executive Producer Ed Zwick took a walk down memory lane Saturday to remind folks about working on the before-its-time drama that starred Claire Danes.
In a long X thread, Zwick shared an “origin story” about how he was first drawn to the work of Winnie Holzman before he would end up co-EPing her script with longtime producing partner Marshall Herskovitz. Zwick chronicles his work on My So-Called Life, as well as thirtysomething, The Last Samurai and Glory in his upcoming book “Hits, Flops and Other Illusions,” out in February.
“Kristy McNichol played ‘Buddy,’ an adolescent girl on ABC-tv’s Family,” Zwick began. “I’d write surly teenage dialogue and get network notes on my scripts with the initials N.O.B. meaning “not our Buddy.” I vowed someday I’d get to portray real adolescence.”

Dear Edward is one and done at Apple TV+.
The streaming service canceled the Jason Katims drama on Wednesday after one season.
The news is a bit of a surprise because Apple TV+ has canceled few shows after their first seasons.
But Dear Edward didn't break out in the way the service expected.
Dear Edward launched with the first three episodes of its 10-episode first season on Friday, February 3, 2023, followed by one new episode weekly every Friday through March 24, 2023.
The series was adapted from Napolitano's bestselling, acclaimed novel of the same name, Dear Edward is a heartbreaking, life-affirming, and uplifting story about survival, resilience, connection, and the examination of what makes us human.
Dear Edward tells the story of Edward Adler (played by O'Brien), a 12-year-old boy who survives a devastating commercial plane crash that kills every other passenger on the flight, including his family.

Dear Edward,
The news from Apple isn’t good.
The iPhone maker/streamer has canceled its Jason Katims-produced drama Dear Edward, making the series about the lone survivor of a plane crash one of Apple’s few scripted shows to get the ax after a single season.
Based on the book by Ann Napolitano, the series reunited Friday Night Lights creator Katims with leading lady Connie Britton and revolved around Edward (Colin O’Brien), a young boy who was the lone survivor of a plane crash. Taylor Schilling, Amy Forsyth, Carter Hudson, Anna Uzele, Idris DeBrand, Ivan Saw, Dario Ladani Sanchez, Eva Ariel Binder and Brittany S. Hall rounded out the cast. “Dear Edward” actress Anna Uzele knows that fans might dislike the ending for her character Adriana and her love interest Kojo (Idris Debrand) in the Apple TV+ drama series’ finale episode, but she sees the love in it.
Uzele’s character Adriana Washington entered the story from the mind of Jason Katims, who adapted Ann Napolitano’s novel to create an ensemble story that also stars Taylor Schilling as Lacey, Connie Britton as Dee Dee and Colin O’Brien as Edward Adler, the titular character who survives a plane crash that killed his family and every other passenger. Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the season finale of Apple TV+’s Dear Edward.
Grief isn’t linear, and it doesn’t have a time limit either.
While Season 1 of the Apple TV+ series Dear Edward — which tells the story of a grief group that brings together the loved ones of the passengers of a fatal plane crash — has come to an end, creator Jason Katims tells Deadline that he’s only scratched the surface of the stories that he wants to tell with these characters. The series has not officially been renewed for a second season, though Katims is waiting patiently for the call.
“There’s 15 or 16 main characters in the show, but there are 180 people on that flight. And aside from those 180, there are all the people whose lives have been touched by that,” he said, adding: “There’s lots of stories left to tell here.

Disabled workers and disability activists in Hollywood are speaking out in support of expanded employment opportunities in the industry. The Thursday, March 23 open letter, signed by stars such as Ali Stroker, Chris Cooper and Marianne Leone, Daniel Durant, Jason Katims, Krista Vernoff, Lauren Ridloff, Marlee Matlin, Paul Feig, Ramy Youssef, and Siân Heder, was created with the Inevitable Foundation to encourage the TV and film industry to hire disabled creatives in writing, producing, directing, and more positions, not just disability consultants. The Inevitable Foundation is a non-profit “working to close the disability representation gap in film and television. Currently, disabled people make up over 20 percent of the U.S. population but represent only two percent of characters on screen and less than one percent of film and TV writers,” the org said in the Thursday press release. “By funding and mentoring mid-career disabled screenwriters, Inevitable Foundation is creating a world...

Connie Britton in “Dear Edward,” now streaming on Apple TV+. After they worked together on Friday Night Lights, producer Jason Katims was hoping he’d have the opportunity to work with one of the show’s stars, Connie Britton, on another project. That chance came with the new series Dear Edward, on which Katims is the creator, showrunner, and executive producer. He approached Britton with the idea of playing the show’s female lead, and she admitted that she was a little taken aback, simply because her role on Dear Edward is so different than what she did on Friday Night Lights. One major change that Jason Katims made in adapting “Dear Edward” from Ann Napolitano’s novel involved casting Connie Britton in a brand new role that really centers the show, but does not exist in the book.
Britton, who has previously collaborated with Katims for “Friday Night Lights,” portrays the charismatic and wealthy Dee Dee, who loses her husband and the family breadwinner in the crash, in the AppleTV+ show.
“I did not read the book and Dee Dee is not in the book.” Britton told TheWrap. “She comes from very humble beginnings, but then she creates this life with all her beautiful things and there’s something that is very sort of free. She has this kind of freedom to be very open-hearted and loving in a way because she has so much privilege, and so it’s sort of hard to know which came first.”

Apple TV+ has made waves with its original series offerings. It proved its mettle in the drama category with The Morning Show and swept multiple awards categories for its comedy Ted Lasso. Both are approaching their third seasons. The network has also delved into the sci-fi genre with Severance and continues to expand its offerings.
Now, the streaming service is hoping to prove it can deliver a heartfelt, poignant tear-jerker in Dear Edward, a series based on a book of the same title. And it’s drawing comparisons to the emotions in This Is Us. Even the drama’s creator Jason Katims teared up in the editing room.
Though the show is based heavily on the bestselling novel by Ann Napolitano, Katims diverts from the original work in a few key ways to make it pop on the screen.

February might be the shortest month, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be packed. This year brings the expected rom-coms, internationally traveling strippers, and a bear on cocaine. And that’s just on the movie front. There’s plenty to watch on TV, too (though nothing with cocaine bears). But first, the month kicks off with a chiller from M. Night Shyamalan.

From “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood” showrunner Jason Katims comes another dynamic story adapted from Ann Napolitano’s best-selling novel. “Dear Edward” follows Edward Adler (Colin O’Brien), the lone survivor of a tragic plane crash, as he adjusts to living with his aunt Lacy (Taylor Schilling) and uncle John (Carter Hudson) after losing his parents and brother in the accident.
The show also splits between narratives of other friends and family members connected to the crash through lost loved ones. Dee Dee (Connie Britton) lost her husband Charles, who had a secret life in Los Angeles that she did not know about. Linda (Amy Forsyth) lost her husband Gary, and she is pregnant with his child. Adrianna (Anna Uzele) lost her grandmother, a prominent New York congresswoman and her boss. Heart, hope, and, yes, joy, emerge from the worst thing that can happen to a person in Dear Edward. Apple TV+‘s new drama, adapted from Ann Napolitano’s bestseller, focuses on the people in a grief support group whose loved ones were killed in a plane crash. Striking this emotional balance for the ensemble cast is Emmy-winning writer/executive producer Jason Katims; he reunites with his Friday Night Lights star Connie Britton as widow Dee Dee, a rich New Yorker and now-single mom to her college-age daughter, Zoe (Audrey Corsa). Also in the support group is Lacey aunt and caretaker for the sole survivor, a 12-year-old, Edward Adler whose parents and older brother died. To protect him, Lacey hides the torrent of sympathy letters alluded to in the series title. Each of the 10 episodes (the first three debut together) reveals more secrets about the lost passengers (...

Thanks to nearly 100 episodes of “Nashville” and five seasons of “Friday Night Lights,” Connie Britton is often associated with the South. Few fans of ABC’s country-music drama will forget her crooning duet, “No One Will Ever Love You,” and fewer still will forget the fierce yet loving twang Tami Taylor put on every piece of advice she gave all those Texan school kids. When she was growing up, Britton did live in Virginia, which she’s said makes it easy for her to slip into the accent whenever she hears it. But she was born in Boston, Mass., lived in Maryland before moving one state down, and traveled back north when she went to Dartmouth College.
This truncated biographical travelogue is simply meant to prepare you, dear readers, for Britton’s work in “Dear Edward,” an Apple TV+ ensemble drama from “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood” showrunner Jason Katims.

The latest miniseries on Apple TV+, "Dear Edward," is the kind of interconnected "human interest" story that feels like it could have happened in real life - but did it? While "Dear Edward" isn't directly based on a true story, it does adapt a book that drew its inspiration from a real-life tragedy and the outpouring of interest that followed.

Fans of tear-jerkers who’ve felt a void since This Is Us ended last year may flock to Dear Edward on Apple TV+, an emotional gut-punch of a drama from master manipulator Jason Katims. The setup, which dominates the first of three episodes available at premiere, is beyond devastating: a plane crash from which only 12-year-old Edward (the soulful Colin O’Brien) survives. Fisher Stevens directs that first hour, which may be the most harrowing depiction of a doomed flight since the pilot of Lost. Only this time the people you meet on board, with the exception of young Edward, live on solely in the memories of those left behind, who provide the focus of a series that tackles with varying degrees of histrionic success the process of grieving. Even gluttons for sentimental punishment may grow weary over 10 episodes of survivor guilt, manifested by a “grief group” of sad souls assessing their shattered lives.

“Dear Edward” is the sort of show that makes you understand why the great middle — the set of works that don’t feature aliens or superheroes, and that are intended for grown-up audiences — has fallen out of the theatrical moviegoing business. That’s because in any era other than this one, this smart but unshapely literary adaptation, full of good intentions and interesting characters but bloated beyond recognition at 10 hours, would have been a comparatively lithe movie.
Taken in the form Apple TV+ has provided us via show creator Jason Katims, though, “Dear Edward” is a bit of a mess — a jumble of semi-intersecting characters whom we meet for long enough to learn more detail about their lives than is strictly necessary, but who blink out of focus when it comes to holding our sympathy. Based on Ann Napolitano’s bestseller, “Dear Edward” has a novelist’s ambition but not the requisite gift for structure.

Television that makes you cry is something Jason Katims is well known for, and his latest on Apple TV+, “Dear Edward,” is no exception to this rule. Even if high school football is outside your interests or a tragedy on the scale of the plane crash only exists in your nightmares, Katims will zero in on the universal (and even mundane) aspects to a significant teary-eyed effect.

Grab the tissues. Jason Katims‘ latest series Dear Edward is sure to be a tearjerker.
Apple TV+ released a trailer for the series on Wednesday, which gives a glimpse at the powerful story of 12-year-old Edward Adler, played by Colin O’Brien, who survives a devastating commercial plane crash that kills every other passenger on the flight, including his family. As Edward and a diverse ensemble of others affected by the tragedy try to make sense of life after the crash, unexpected friendships, romances and communities are formed.
To be fair, the series even made Katims shed a tear. During AppleTV+’s Television Critics Association panel on Wednesday, the Parenthood creator joked that he’d had to hold back tears in the editing room.

Dear Edward is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Ann Napolitano and described as “a heartbreaking, life-affirming, and uplifting story about survival, resilience, connection, and the examination of what makes us human.” The drama tells the story of Edward Adler (O’Brien), a 12-year-old boy who survives a devastating commercial plane crash that kills every other passenger on the flight, including his family. As Edward and others all over the world affected by the tragedy try to make sense of life after the crash, unexpected friendships, romances, and communities are formed.
