Its late summer in 1982 and you’ve seen the preview for Friday the 13th Part III, which told you a few things. The first piece of information that the preview had in store for you was that this was very much Jason’s movie. While Child’s Play would fully embrace the name change and just start using Chucky in the title, Friday the 13th would hang on to that particular superstitious day for a bit longer. Jason is named almost as much as the fact that this sequel in the Friday the 13th franchise would be in 3D, which is to say, A Lot. The preview also shows another detail that at the time would be innocuous but looking back was the catalyst for what many people see as the key to the series. This is the first movie where Jason gets his iconic hockey mask. Put on your trusty...

Last Friday (not the 13th) on our Horror Live Stream, Friday Night Frights (watch it embedded above), our host Tyler Nichols, inspired by the recent release of the indie horror flick, In A Violent Nature, opted to open up a discussion with viewers about what the best Friday the 13th movies are. We also ran a poll on the weekend (The Final Chapter and Jason Lives were nearly neck-in-neck). Keeping with the theme, we decided to take a deep, long-form dive into the franchise rankings ourselves.
While this list is all in good fun, I have to admit that I found it to be surprisingly difficult to put together. That’s because the Friday the 13th franchise is my favorite of all franchises and I love every one of these films. Ranking them was like trying to rank my major internal organs. Some may work better than others, but I need them all!

Last year, author R. G. Henning sent the book Sackhead: The Definitive Retrospective on Friday the 13th Part 2 – a 277 page book entirely dedicated to 1981’s Friday the 13th Part 2 – out into the world, and you can pick up a copy of Sackhead at This Link. Now Henning has turned his attention to the next sequel in the franchise, 1982’s Friday the 13th Part III, with the retrospective book Jason 3D: A Comprehensive Exposé on Friday the 13th Part 3, and copies are available for purchase on Amazon! The book is currently going for the price of $18.99.

Spurred on by new three-dimensional projection technology, Hollywood studios gambled on genre films. By 1984, however, most 3-D features had flopped, and audiences soon lost interest. The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

Back in 2021, I started a recurring column here on Bloody Disgusting called The Silver Lining, where I’d try to find the good parts of movies that were generally considered “bad.” Not only did I have a lot of fun looking back on less-appreciated films while finding hidden nuggets of entertainment where there should only have been schlock, but these articles also taught me to take in the good with the bad when watching genre pictures that at least tried to do something different.
I was reminded of this lesson while revisiting Warlock: The Armageddon this past week, as I believe this strange little film contains both the best and the worst moments of the Warlock franchise in an unexpected blend of sheer creative madness and aggressively bland characters. Steve Miner's "Halloween H20: 20 Years Later" was the seventh "Halloween" film, but it came during a slasher revival that was sparked by the success of Wes Craven's "Scream" two years earlier. "H20" ignored the mythology laid out in "Halloween III: Season of the Witch," "Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers," "Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers," and "Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers."
The film caught up with Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), still overcoming the trauma of Halloween night back in 1978 (covered in "Halloween" and "Halloween II"), and learning to live with the fact that Michael Myers is her brother. Moreso, "H20" focuses on Laurie's son John (Josh Hartnett) and his hip-talking teen peers. The teen cast contained a few notable stars-to-be, including Michelle Williams and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. If the kids sound like characters from a Kevin Williamson film, it's because Williamson served as...

Despite how prevalent they are in spooky media, you’d be surprised at how rare it used to be for traditionally recognizable witches to be the main antagonists in scary movies. Sure, we got the eerie crones of the pseudo-documentary Haxan and even a dancing coven in Suspiria, but for the longest time, witches were relegated to humorous stereotypes akin to the Sanderson Sisters rather than anything truly terrifying. It’s only recently that modern classics like The Witch and Gretel and Hansel have made potions and broomsticks scary again, revisiting the disturbing origins of these myths in ways that genre films of the 20th century simply couldn’t handle.
There are a few exceptions to this rule, however, and one of my favorites just so happens to be a bizarre trilogy that dared to ask what would happen if a potion-brewing maniac from the early days of America found himself transported to modern times.

John Carpenter's 1978 horror film "Halloween" was famously inspired by 1960s serial killer films like Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" and Powell/Pressburger's "Peeping Tom," only filtered through a low-budget, '70s grindhouse lens. Initially, "Halloween" was dismissed by audiences, but legend has it that Roger Ebert's overwhelmingly positive 1979 review saved it from obscurity. This may seem like an odd piece of trivia, given that Ebert infamously hated the slasher genre that "Halloween" helped spawn.
For the uninitiated, the original "Halloween" was about an empty-eyed young child, Michael Myers, who killed his big sister in cold blood on Halloween night in 1963. For fifteen years, Michael was kept in an insane asylum where he never spoke a word and stared blankly at a wall. Michael breaks out of the hospital in 1978, travels back to his old neighborhood, dons a creepy white-face mask, and begins stalking and murdering babysitters on Halloween night.

The 1986 horror comedy House, directed by Steve Miner from a screenplay by Ethan Wiley (based on a story by Fred Dekker), has a solid cult following to this day. The 1987 standalone sequel House II: The Second Story (watch it Here), which was written and directed by Wiley (again from a story by Dekker), has a less positive reputation than its predecessor. But there are fans out there who enjoy House II even more than the first House – and I happen to be one of those fans. So I’m very happy to see that JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek has decided to celebrate House II: The Second Story, which has been a favorite of mine since childhood, with a new video that digs into The Best Scene in the movie! The ’90s are chock full of some great sci-fi horror films. Who can forget Event Horizon, The Lawnmower Man, Mimic or Deep Blue Sea…. ya know, the one where Samuel L. Jackson gets eaten by a shark? Anyways, let’s fast forward to the end of the decade, 1999 in particular. It was, and still is, considered to be the best year movies were released. In January, director John Bruno would bring us the film, Virus (watch it Here). A movie that makes us ask the question “Wtf Happened To This Horror Movie?”

The best legacy sequels concern themselves with the weight of the decades that have passed and the long-term effects of the events separated by the gulf of time between entries. While these stories occur across the wide spectrum of entertainment, the horror genre is uniquely positioned to explore such follow ups. After all, just as years affect a life, so too does the horrors of one blood-soaked Halloween night.
Long before Halloween (2018) brought Jamie Lee Curtis back into the fold as Laurie Strode in an effort to explore her deeply repressed trauma, Halloween H20 (1998) set out to accomplish just that. Itself twenty years removed from John Carpenter’s original Halloween (1978), Halloween H20 is one of the most successful films of its kind and a high point for the franchise, providing emotional depth and a satisfying conclusion to Laurie Strode’s narrative. It may have hit theaters in early August, but its chilly,...

In no small part thanks to the success of 2018's "Halloween," which raked in a ridiculously great $255 million worldwide against a mere $10 million production budget, so-called legacy sequels have become all the rage in the horror genre. Basically, you make a sequel that can serve as both a fresh entry point for new viewers while bringing back some familiar elements to anchor it to the nostalgia train as well. You could certainly look to movies like "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" as part of this trend as well, but horror truly has been making the most of it in recent years. But, a full 25 years ago, "Halloween" attempted to be well ahead of the curve in this department.

The "Halloween" franchise is one of the most iconic and enduring in all of horror. Beginning 45 years ago with director John Carpenter's seminal classic, audiences have enjoyed the saga of Michael Myers and his brand of slasher goodness across many different incarnations -- not to mention somewhat confusing timelines. 25 years ago, one of the most important entries in the series hit theaters in the form of "Halloween H20: 20 Years Later." Arriving 20 years after the original, the film brought Jamie Lee Curtis back as Laurie Strode for the first time since 1981's "Halloween II." It was a big deal. The only problem? Michael Myers looked like an absolute clown for the movie's entire runtime thanks to his unforgivably bad mask.
Let's set the stage a touch. The series had been kind of a mess because "Halloween 4" killed off Laurie off-screen and things got really weird in 1995's "Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers.

Back in 1998, John Carpenter’s classic slasher Halloween got a “twenty years later” sequel called Halloween H20 (watch it Here) – and we’re now further removed from the release of H20 than it was from the release of the first Halloween. Haunted houses are a standard in horror for a reason. It’s not just the spectral invasion of our home that unnerves, but the unpredictability that comes with ghostly presences. A masked maniac can be stopped or temporarily subdued, but all bets are off in haunted houses.

Released to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the original Halloween, H20 ignored the events of the Curtis-less parts 4, 5, and 6. Twenty years later, Curtis came back to Halloween again for a movie that would ignore every Halloween film except the original, H20 included.

Arrow in the Head readers may remember our long-running Face-Off article series, which I wrote for quite a while. That concept is now back with our new video series, Horror Face-Off, and the first episode of the series can be seen in the embed above! We’re getting things started with a match-up that genre fans have been debating amongst themselves for the last few years; which film is better in the battle between Halloween: H20 (get it Here) and the 2018 Halloween (get that one Here)? They both brought Jamie Lee Curtis back as Laurie Strode and ignored previous sequels, but which was more effective? Find out which one we chose by checking out the video.
Here’s what the Horror Face-Off video series is all about:
In this series we put two worthy horror related foes in the ring for an epic clash! Whether it’s a pair of horror movies,...

"A Nightmare on Elm Street" was the little movie that could, a film that became a turning point for its writer and director, Wes Craven. Inspired by a series of newspaper articles concerning a group of people complaining of having bad nightmares and then dying of mysterious causes soon afterward, the tale of dream demon Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) menacing a group of teens led by Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) made such an enormous amount of money (as did its first few subsequent sequels) that it made distribution house New Line Cinema into "the house that Freddy built," and began a franchise that remains popular to this day.
Yet "Nightmare" wasn't only successful for its makers; it also added to the culture in numerous ways. It became a watershed moment for the horror film, providing a brand new template for unscrupulous producers and ambitious young stalwarts to follow ever since...

Jamie Lee Curtis professed her love to a room filled with more than 5,000 “Halloween” franchise fans at New York Comic Con on Saturday, telling the crowd: “No matter what I do — whatever the fuck I do forever — Laurie Strode is because of you and I thank you. ”
Curtis choked up at the start of panel when moderator Drew Barrymore first brought her out for the one-on-one sit down and began by asking how it feels to finally come to the conclusion of her “Halloween” story with the release of “Halloween Ends.” The slasher finale will debut in theaters and on the streaming service Peacock.
“Endings are a bitch, but so is Laurie Strode,” Curtis said, before wiping tears away from her eyes as the crowd cheered for her.
Curtis later said to the audience, “At this point, Jamie and Laurie have become woven together. There is no separation” and “I...

The Friday the 13th franchise (buy the Blu-ray set Here) is my favorite horror franchise. And while Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI is the movie I credit with making me a horror fan, my favorite entry in the series is actually Friday the 13th Part III. The film just celebrated its 40th anniversary last month, and to mark the occasion 2nd assistant camera operator Mako Koiwai shared a batch of awesome, never-before-seen behind-the-scenes pictures with the folks at Smoking Zombie Films. You can see these eight images, including an incredible shot of the filming of the alternate ending (where the heroine was going to be decapitated), in this Facebook post – click Here.

There’s a scene in “The Rocketeer,” Disney’s big budget would-be blockbuster from the summer of 1991, that ranks among the most profoundly strange and transfixing moments in the studio’s storied history.
The scene, which takes place in 1938, unfolds right before the movie’s big, fiery climax at L.A.’s Griffith Observatory. Our hero, L.A. stunt pilot-turned-makeshift-superhero Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell) is in the office of Howard Hughes (a perfectly cast Terry O’Quinn). Hughes, it turns out, is the inventor of an experimental rocket pack that Secord has happened upon and utilized in a series of exciting action sequences. The FBI is there too. Hughes wants his rocket back, stressing how potentially dangerous it is, especially if it fell into the wrong hands. Secord wants to keep it.
To underline his point, Hughes shows Secord a film. “Keep watching, kid. It cost a man’s life to get this out of Germany,...

The "Friday the 13th" franchise has 12 entries in it so far, if we are to count 2003's franchise crossover film, "Freddy vs. Jason." The success of the first two films in the franchise helped solidify the mythos of Jason Voorhees as a slasher villain, and it was up to 1982's "Friday the 13th Part III" to finish the trilogy on a resounding note. This obviously did not end up being the case, as the franchise spawned multiple entries that furthered Jason's legacy over the years. However, the franchise's longevity cannot be attributed to the success of "Part III." While the film performed well at the box office, it received negative critical reviews for its shoddy kills and rehashed "slash n kill" routine.

"Friday the 13th Part III" holds a special place in many a horror fan's heart. Not only is it the only disco-themed 3D entry of the extensive franchise, it's the first to depict slasher king Jason Voorhees in the hockey mask that would become his trademark, as recognizable as Freddy Krueger's bladed glove or Michael Myers' Shatner mask.
Steve Miner's 1982 horror sequel built upon the lore of Voorhees, who began his reign of terror in "Part 2" wearing a plain burlap sack over his head (not dissimilar from the Phantom's bag-mask in Charles B. Pierce's '76 horror picture "The Town That Dreaded Sundown"). "Part 3" sees the introduction of fresh blood at Camp Crystal Lake, a new group of young people staying near the cursed place for a weekend. Among them is Shelly (Larry Zerner), a prankster who brings along theatrical blood, trick props, and a hockey mask (originally...

Fans of Jason Voorhees already know the trivia: Steve Miner's sequel "Friday the 13th Part 3 3-D" was the first film in the notorious slasher series to feature the central serial killer wearing his recognizable hockey mask. Some of Jason's more well-researched fans might also know that the mask was molded from the facial accessory worn by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1950s. That information reveals a missed opportunity: The series mostly takes place around Camp Crystal Lake, New Jersey. "Part 3" was released in August of '82. The New Jersey Devils were formed in June of that same year. The filmmakers missed their chance to depict a Jersey boy like Jason sporting a Devils mask. Now he will always be stanning for Detroit. What a waste.

1982 was a watershed year in terms of theatrical exhibition. The hit-cluttered summer release schedule -- which included all-timers like "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," "Poltergeist" and "An Officer and a Gentleman" -- firmly established the season as a commercial goldmine. Tucked in between the blockbusters and bombs was the modest sensation of "Friday the 13th Part 3." Directed by steady studio hand Steve Miner, the second sequel in the Paramount franchise sought to spice up its slasher formula by shooting in native 3D.
The format gamble worked. "Friday the 13th Part 3" opened to a then massive 9.3 million over the August 13 weekend, outgrossing "E.T." and compelling studios to consider wringing a few extra drops out of their flagging franchises by embracing the outmoded optical gimmickry. It worked -- for a couple of years, at least.

Jason Voorhees, the Friday The 13th masked mass murderer who has terrorized horny teenagers at camp sites for generations, has had many faces. This is both a credit to the various makeup artists designing Jason’s gruesome face and the performers wearing those makeups beneath that iconic hockey mask. This Friday the 13th holiday, we rank the latter. The top Jason will be pretty obvious to most Friday fiends… but how does the rest of this list shake out?
We should note that the Friday The 13th franchise also sports three major non-Jason serial killer characters, in the original Friday The 13th, Friday The 13th Part V: A New Beginning (although Jason does make a tiny cameo in both of these films), and of course Freddy Vs. Jason. These rankings will comprise the actual Jasons only.
Child Jasons will be mentioned along with their adult counterparts’ individual entries, except in...

The best scary movies start with a truly killer idea. For Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson, it was to take the tropes of the done-to-death slasher movie and inject it with a satirical, self-referential edge tailor-made for the knowing audiences of the 1990s. The result was a black comedy horror whodunit that had audiences laughing and shrieking in equal measure.
Williamson, who would go on after Scream to solidify his legacy with the sharply written teen drama series, Dawson’s Creek, drew his influences from fact and fiction. His first draft was inspired by the chilling story of the real-life Gainesville Ripper, but the finished product also paid homage to movies like Halloween, When A Stranger Calls, and Prom Night.

Derek Waters loves TV history — so much so that he even keeps a collection of old TV Guide magazines at home. As the co-creator and host of Comedy Central’s Emmy-nominated “Drunk History,” it’s perhaps no surprise that Waters reveres classic TV — particularly from his childhood era of the 1980s.
But here’s where he draws the line at nostalgia: Reboots and remakes.
“I hope some day, I’m alive to see some sort of law passed where something, be it ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ once a show or movie [has been given] some sort of accolade, it can be shut,” Waters told Variety‘s “My Favorite Episode” podcast. “You’re not allowed to touch this. Leave it alone.”
Waters’ suggestion: Just re-release a DVD of the original instead. “Don’t change it,” he added. “I’m trying to think of one thing where I’m so glad they rebooted that, and...

In the new horror movie “Crawl,” a pack of enormous alligators invades a sleepy Florida town during a violent hurricane and proceeds to rip the cast apart, limb by limb. These nasty gators aren’t the first critters of their kind to terrify audiences, however. Here’s our list of ravenous reptiles, ranked in order from scariest to silliest.
1) Alligator (1980)
Two-time Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Sayles penned this gruesomely entertaining monster mash about a baby gator named Ramón who gets flushed down a toilet and mutates into a 36-foot behemoth lurking in the Chicago sewer system. When his appetite for human flesh gets the better of him, Ramón bursts through the sidewalk and chows down on a horde of terrified locals. Anyone a fan of giant Crocodiles? Our watery friends have been making an appearance as of late in the news, as well as the upcoming film Crawl.

Finding him gravely injured in the crawl space of their family home, the two become trapped by quickly encroaching floodwaters. One of my favorite horror movies to watch when I was growing up was a 1985 film called House. Outside of my family, I don’t know a lot of people that are familiar with this movie, so I thought I’d bring it to your attention just in case. If you have seen the movie… congratulations! You win! And now you can go watch it again.
The movie was written by Fred Dekker (Monster Squad) and Ethan Wiley and it was directed by Steve Miner. House also had a great cast that included William Katt (Greatest American Hero), George Wendt (Cheers) and Richard Moll (Night Court).
The story follows a character named Roger Cobb, a Vietnam vet with a career as a horror novelist, whose son Jimmy mysteriously disappears while visiting his aunt's house. As Roger doesn’t give up looking for Jimmy his marriage comes to an end and...

When the Internet huddles together to rank all 12 slasher films in the famous Friday the 13th franchise, Steve Miner’s Part 3 typically finds itself rooted to the bottom of the list.
Originally released in 1982, Miner’s widely derided threequel drew the ire of horror fans for its hokey 3D effects, as studio executives scrambled for a way to lure viewers back to Camp Crystal Lake for another round of frivolous teenage fun and gruesome, over-the-top kills.
By that token, Friday the 13th Part 3 delivered in spades – remember the scene in which Jason Voorhees pops out an eyeball? Chills – even if Steve Miner’s follow-up will always be remembered as a derivative continuation of the superior Friday the 13th Part 2.
However that may be, director Kevin R. Phipps has produced a 40-minute documentary designed around Part 3. Aptly titled Friday the 13th Part 3: The Memoriam Documentary, it’s essentially a horror-tinged love letter to Richard Brooker,...

Remember how in 2008 we all thought a Day Of The Dead remake co-starring Nick Cannon was the lowest low? Well, sorry 2016 us – it’s only gotten worse. Hèctor Hernández Vicens’ Day Of The Dead: Bloodline is – against all odds – an even more ill-advised rehashing than Steve Miner’s. How? Hold on, let me unravel the mile-long scroll of notes I scribbled…ah. How about digitally abhorrent CGI scars and blood splatters? Horrendous Adr that starts the film with mismatched voices to mouths? Angled camera shots of half-empty rooms – like, who watched 1985’s Day Of The Dead and decided it needed more rape? If you’re going to remake history, there better be a good reason – case and point.
