Written in 1974, prolific young-adult novelist Lois Duncan’s “Down a Dark Hall” intriguingly anticipated some of the tropes of latterday Ya fantasy-fiction blockbusters. Thus “Buried” director Rodrigo Cortés’ belated screen adaptation comes off — at least in narrative terms — as something a halfway point between “Harry Potter” and “Suspiria,” as “gifted” girls at a curious, sinister private school become increasingly susceptible to supernatural forces.
Lionsgate Premiere’s Stateside launch of this Spanish-u.S. coproduction (which has already opened in several other territories) doesn’t suggest great faith, as it’s only providing very limited theatrical exposure alongside a VOD release. Still, this is a decent modern Gothic thriller handled with sufficient style and a straight face by genre ace Cortés. His efforts, and strong performances by the young female leads, make for a movie that’s fairly strong meat by juvenile fantasy standards, if probably a tad wimpy for horror-fan tastes.

"We've had a lot of wonderful trips in this ole rust bucket." A new official international trailer from the UK has debuted for the indie roadtrip comedy The Leisure Seeker. This film actually premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals last fall, mostly because it's directed by a veteran Italian filmmaker named Paolo Virzì. The Leisure Seeker stars two great actors - Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland - who go on an unforgettable journey in the faithful old Rv they call "The Leisure Seeker" as a runaway couple. The film's cast includes Christian McKay, Janel Moloney, and Kirsty Mitchell. The emotional side of the story is that Sutherland's character is losing his memory as they get older, and this may be the last vacation they'll remember together. It received mostly bad reviews at festivals, but looks like it might appeal to a few folks. Here's the official UK trailer...

An expanded version of a failed TV pilot, whose first trailer debuted waaay back in 2013, this iteration of The Saint is already on the backfoot before it begins. You have a rejected pilot, “fixed” with reshoots, Twice(!) – which is why Ernie Barbarash is now the credited director and not Simon West (Con Air, Tomb Raider) who is now credited as Executive Producer instead – and featuring not one but Two previous Saints in the cast, Roger Moore and Ian Ogilvy, just to remind you of how good both actors were in the role… Oh, and then there’s memories of the Val Kilmer movie to sour the audiences view...

We've got a new trailer for you to watch for Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson's new action-comedy The Hitman's Bodyguard. This is a great trailer that makes the movie look like a lot of fun. I've actually already seen the film and the trailer makes it look better than it really is. While the film does have some funny and entertaining action-packed moments, the film has a weird pacing where at points it was a comedy and other points it felt like a serious drama. As I said before, It was like one of those direct to DVD B-action movies that would pop up on the shelves of your local Blockbuster Video back in the 90's.
That being said, it does have some great moments and if you can overlook the film's faults I think some of you might really enjoy it. Here's the synopsis:

Meet Michael Bryce. He’s a special protection agent, and a damn good one at that. But when Ryan Reynolds’ sharpshooter is assigned the role of bodyguard, one sworn to protect a world-famous assassin (Samuel L. Jackson) by the name of Darius Kincaid, things begin to get complicated.
This odd-couple dynamic is the fuel powering The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Patrick Hughes’ zany action romp in which Reynolds and Jackson channel the spirit of Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. The film’s tongue-in-cheek poster (see below) was enough to pique our curiosity, but Lionsgate has gone one step further today to dispatch the new and frankly hilarious final trailer.
Dialling the action up to 11, it’s a tantalizing tease of the studio’s upcoming feature, one that makes no bones about placing Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson’s duelling operatives front and center. In fact, their encounter is shaping up...

"This guy single-handedly ruined the word 'Motherfucker,'" Ryan Reynolds' protection agent character says about Samuel L. Jackson's hitman character in a new trailer for Lionsgate's The Hitman's Bodyguard. Judging from the clip, the meta statement alluding to Jackson's infamous Mf-wielding status hints at a film that likely pokes fun at itself while delivering action-packed scenes.
The plot involves a "Triple A-rated executive protection agent" (Reynolds) being assigned the task of guarding a notorious hitman (Jackson). The pair clearly dislike each other. While sitting in a car, the hitman threatens,...

Lionsgate has released the enjoyable first red-band trailer for their upcoming action comedy The Hitman's Bodyguard. The movie stars Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson. With a cinematic team up like that, you might expect great things.
I've actually already seen the movie and although it was entertaining and had some funny humor and action-packed moments, it never really quite grabbed me like I was hoping it would. The movie and the flow were kinda all over the place. It was like one of those direct to DVD B-action movies that would pop up on the shelves of your local Blockbuster Video back in the 90s.

Emilia Clarke might have become a household name thanks to her starring role in "Game of Thrones," but she actually was in American households well before she was playing Daenerys Targaryen. Clarke's big breakout was in the 2010 SyFy original movie "Triassic Attack," a made-for-tv movie about a town being attacked by reanimated dinosaur fossils. No wonder Clarke looks so at home with her dragons on "Game of Thrones."

The Descendants (15)
(Alexander Payne, 2011, Us) George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, Nick Krause, Robert Forster. 115 mins
A sideways move from Sideways takes Payne on another tour of masculine crises, though this has mellowed and matured for longer. Family issues jolt Clooney out of his Hawaiian comfort zone. His wife's sudden coma puts him in charge of their two daughters, and brings their marriage into perspective, while his control of the ancestral estate adds to the burden. It's a well-rooted drama of great performances and big themes (and probably big awards).
Like Crazy (12A)
(Drake Doremus, 2011, Us) Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, Jennifer Lawrence. 90 mins
Young love sees no colour, but it must abide by visa regulations in this cross-Atlantic romantic saga, which tests a couple's endurance in an offbeat, indie style.
The Grey (15)
(Joe Carnahan, 2012, Us) Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo. 117 mins
Liam Neeson v wolves – seems like a good match.

Mercenaries
Stars: Billy Zane, Vas Blackwood, Geoff Bell, Kirsty Mitchell, Robert Fucilla | Written and Directed by Paris Leonti
It would be disingenuous to suggest that I had anything other than fairly low expectations for my first screening of 2012. A low-budget, war film starring a bunch of unknown actors ‘and Billy Zane’ (a title card that actually caused titters of mirth among some of the more openly dismissive members of the audience)? How good could this possibly be?
If 462 users on the IMDb (at time of writing) are to be believed, not very good at all. It currently holds a rating of 4.4. Having seen Mercenaries, this seems a little unfair to me. Sure, it’s no classic, nor even a rough diamond, but it’s far from a stinker. The film begins with a military coup in Serbia. The low budget is evident from off, though the brutal execution of the...

You know we are nearing the end of October when the pace of horror DVD title releases starts slowing down. The guys over at Dread Central have snagged a new exclusive clip from the upcoming direct to DVD release (arriving next week) of man-eating crocodile sequel 'Lake Placid 3'. Entitled 'Escape', the clip shows a lot of post-attack hoo-ha from the worried teens and local warden Nathan Bickerman (played by 'A Town Called Eureka' star Colin Ferguson) who attempt to escape the snappy fellows clutches. Yancy Butler, Kirsty Mitchell, Brit actress Kacey Barnfield (below), Jordan Grehs and Michael Ironside all co-star. Following our recent naked Kacey Barnfield pics from the follow-up Dread Central have also included the trailer and some other clips from the movie so don't forget to go and check them all out! You may remember last week we posted a batch of highly interesting stills from the pic which featured one of it's stars Kacey Barnfield and company getting topless (and bottomless!) in the movie.

Triassic Attack: A sacred Indian ceremony brings fossilized dinosaurs back to life to terrorize a college campus. Who could possibly come up with an idea this boneheaded? Syfy, of course! Who else but Syfy would make a movie about T-Rex and pteradon skeletons running amok killing people?
Originally saddled with the more matter-of-fact title Fossils until someone at Syfy decided it needed a title with more pizazz, this Syfy original marks the feature film directing debut of Colin Ferguson, who must have read the script about zombie dinosaur fossils and instantly exclaimed, "Eureka! I must direct this!"
The "Eureka" star does not appear in the film; no doubt to busy playing an old "Colossal Fossil Fight" game for inspiration to step in front of the camera. Lake Placid 3 DVD ArtSyFy produced the latest in the Lake Placid franchise for a release this past August 21st (Lake Placid 3). Now, Sony Pictures will be releasing this creature feature on DVD October 26th. The film involves unbelievably large crocodiles and their appetite for human flesh. Have a watch as twenty-five foot mayhem unloads in this first mature rated trailer for the picture.
The synopsis for Lake Placid 3:
"Get ready for a living, feeding nightmare when a swarm of gigantic crocodiles terrorizes a secluded country lake. When local wildlife is brutally mauled and campers are reduced to carcasses, biologist Nathan Bickerman (Colin Ferguson) knows a voracious predator is on the loose. So does a feisty female hunting guide (Yancy Butler) out for her next trophy. As the body count rises, the local sheriff tries to keep things quiet and keep the tourists coming. Bolstering its "Saturday movies" slate for 2010, SyFy announced a slew of original movies that are now in the works. Keeping the killer crocodile sub-genre alive, the network is shepherding Lake Placid 3 . Another sequel spun off from Steve Miner's 1999 film written by David E. Kelly. The last entry, Lake Placid 2 , arrived in 2008. In the threequel, Colin Ferguson (of Eureka , so SyFy is keeping the casting in the family) stars as a game warden who relocates to his aunt's cabin on Lake Placid with his wife and their young son move into their aunt's cabin on Lake Placid. His kid starts to feed the local baby croc population and they grow up to be hungry. Kirsty Mitchell and Yancy Butler co-star. David Reed penned this entry. He also wrote the Supernatural...

Why do good actors insist on starring in bad movies? I realize roles are probably pretty scarce for relative unknowns, but you wouldn't pounce upon a pile of shit just because you were sort of hungry, would you? Almost Heaven is a prime example of such desperate shit-eating. You might remember Donal Logue from the kind-of-amusing Grounded for Life and, um, the romantic comedy Just Like Heaven (I only watched it for Mark Ruffalo, I swear!) I actually think Logue is a good comedic actor, even if he does at times give off a douchy Dane Cook-esque vibe, but if he keeps deciding to take on roles in films as mediocre as Almost Heaven, he won't have much of a career.
The film concerns washed up, recently-divorced TV director Mark Brady (Donal Logue), who gets somewhat of a professional break when he lands a job shooting a Scottish wildlife program about fish.

Conti, Collins welcomed into 'Heaven'
TORONTO -- Tom Conti ("Shirley Valentine") and Joely Collins ("The Dead Zone") have joined the cast of Shel Piercy's romantic comedy feature "Almost Heaven", shooting in suburban Vancouver and Glasgow, it was announced Tuesday. The quirky Canada/U.K. co-production between Vancouver-based Infinity films and London-based Rafford Films also stars Donal Logue ("The Tao of Steve") and Kirsty Mitchell ("Greyfriars"). Collins plays a bitter ex-wife starring in a TV fishing show shot in the Scottish Borders region by a charismatic, mostly drunk director (Logue), to whom her character was once married. Piercy wrote the feature screenplay with Richard Beattie. Producer credits go to Cynthia Chapman of Infinity and Allan Scott for Rafford, while Peter Simpson and Dan Carriere are executive producing. Norstar Films is distributing "Almost Heaven", which is set for a December release.

A Shot at Glory
"A Shot at Glory" is a straightforward sports movie that treats its audience to ample amounts of soccer action while keeping its characters and narration as simple as possible. Filming in several stadiums with as many as 10 cameras rolling at once, the film captures the excitement this sport generates among its fans. A pet project for producer-star Robert Duvall, who recruited Denis O'Neill to pen the script, "Glory" is directed by Michael Corrente with an eye to establishing a Scottish blue-collar environment and the passion many of its citizens feel for soccer.
Made more than two years ago and languishing on the shelf since its debut at the 2000 Toronto International Film Festival, "Glory" is now getting a shot at theatrical glory beginning with a limited release in six Southwestern cities from newly formed MAC Releasing. The film should attract sports fans as well as fans of Duvall. Overseas, where soccer fanaticism is rampant, the film is an even surer bet. (The film has already played in the United Kingdom, where it did well.) Nor does it hurt that Scottish soccer great Ally McCoist makes a lively acting debut with the movie.
Duvall plays Gordon McLeod, the manager of a Second Division team in a tiny seaside town in Scotland that hasn't won a championship in 100 years. With such a limited fan base, the team's American owner, Peter Cameron (Michael Keaton), is eyeing a move to Dublin, Ireland, to add value to his investment.
Meanwhile, Peter hires a former First Division superstar, striker Jackie McQuillan (McCoist), willfully ignoring the fact that booze and womanizing have brought down not only Jackie's career but also his marriage to Gordon's daughter, Kate (Kirsty Mitchell). Earning more money than the rest of the team combined and still beholden to his errant ways, Jackie nevertheless inspires a winning streak that carries the lightly regarded team into the Scottish Cup finals. The proposition then becomes simple: If the team beats the Glasgow Rangers -- against almost impossible odds -- Peter will allow it to remain in its hometown.
There are only two real conflicts in the movie: between Gordon and his spoiled son-in-law and then between Gordon and his own daughter, whom he has never forgiven for marrying Jackie. There is a nominal villain in Brian Cox's Martin Smith, the Rangers' manager and a onetime mate of Gordon who long ago betrayed him. But Martin pops up too late in the movie to generate any sparks.
Mostly, the movie exists for its soccer action and its fine acting. Duvall's Gordon is a man who treasures his betrayals. He nurtures wounds with righteous pride and wears disdain for those who inflict them as if it were the finest silk. In his first role ever, McCoist displays such a friendly, amiable manner he could easily continue in acting if he so desired. Mitchell and Morag Hood ably play the two long-suffering women of Gordon's life -- his daughter and wife. Oda Schuster is most amusing as the team's aging locker room assistant, who seemingly performs all chores that do not involve kicking a ball.
Alex Thomson's cinematography is first-rate, and Mark Knopfler (of Dire Straits) provides the Scottish-accented music, which nicely punctuates the action and occasional moments of drama.
