The next Mortal Kombat movie is going to kick things up a notch. That’s according to Lewis Tan, who plays Cole Young in the films. Tan talked all about Mortal Kombat 2 at San Diego Comic-Con this year. He says the fights will be even longer and bloodier than before. The gore and violence will be more intense, bringing the film closer to the super crazy battles in the video games.
Tan explained that the filmmakers listened to what fans liked and didn’t like about the first movie. “We made the sequel a hundred times better based on your feedback,” he said. One big change – this time they’re including an all-important tournament, just like in the games. The first movie left that part out.
Not only that, but Tan hinted the new film is letting loose even more. While the first one grounded things by introducing Cole...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the drama races.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re in the early stages of Phase 2 — and loving it? Ok, probably not. But more than a few categories remain in doubt, particularly Best Drama Actor. We both love Hiroyuki Sanada, but what if he’s not the favorite in that race and it’s actually good ol’ Gary Oldman. I’m old enough to remember when Oldman was the de facto frontrunner there for “Slow Horses” before “Shōgun” switched to the drama category, and with how both shows performed with the academy, an Oldman win really does make sense. He’s the true lead of his show, something I’m not sure could be typed as confidently about Sanada.

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Walton Goggins is entering the “Fallout” episode “The Ghouls” as his 2024 Emmy Award submission for Best Drama Actor. “The Ghouls” aired on April 10, 2024, and is the fourth episode of the Amazon Prime Video drama’s first season.

About to be cut open, Lucy fights back and frees the captive ghouls held by the harvesters. The feral ghouls attack her and the gang, and Lucy is forced to kill for the first time. She leaves, but not before giving the Ghoul the chems he needs.

“The Bear,” “Shōgun” and “Baby Reindeer” are the Emmy favorites, but how many awards will they actually win? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with their first winner predictions.
With a record-breaking 23 nominations, “The Bear” is obviously expected to bag its second straight Best Comedy Series trophy, but it probably won’t claim six of the seven main categories like it did last time — especially not with “Hacks” back in the picture. The Max comedy could grab multiple wins, including for Jean Smart, who’s undefeated for “Hacks,” and Hannah Einbinder, who’s looking for her first victory, and writing. But how much of a boost will “The Bear’s” Liza Colón-Zayas get from her Season 3 showcase “Napkins” and without co-star Abby Elliott in contention? And what does “Only Murders in the Building’s” over-performance mean?

Anna Sawai has barely had enough time to digest receiving her first career Emmy nomination for her leading role of Lady Mariko in FX’s “Shōgun,” which earned a whopping 25 nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards. In an exclusive chat with Gold Derby recorded just hours after the nominations announcement (watch the video above), Sawai admits to feeling a bit overwhelmed. “It feels like it just got announced 15 minutes ago and I’m still processing it.”
It’s been a banner year for Sawai, who headlined not one, but two acclaimed shows: “Shōgun” and “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” which will return for a second season on Apple TV+. In addition to the Emmy nomination, Sawai has also earned four Gold Derby TV Awards nominations and just recently won the TCA award for Individual Achievement in Drama.

Message from Space, directed by Kinji Fukasaku, is a Japanese science fiction film that blends traditional space opera tropes with unique cultural elements, delivering a visually captivating yet narratively uneven experience. Released in the wake of the monumental success of Star Wars, this film ambitiously seeks to carve out its own niche within the genre.
One of the standout features of Message from Space is its visual presentation. The film showcases an impressive array of special effects for its time, with meticulously designed spacecraft and vibrant alien landscapes that reflect a distinctively Japanese aesthetic. The miniature models and practical effects, though not as polished as those in Hollywood blockbusters, possess a charming quality that adds to the film’s retro-futuristic appeal.

Some of the most iconic drama series in recent TV memory aired on FX: “The Shield,” “Nip/Tuck,” “Rescue Me,” “Damages,” “Sons of Anarchy,” “Justified,” “The Americans,” “Pose,” etc. However, the cable network has never taken home the coveted Emmy Award for Best Drama Series. Until now? According to Gold Derby’s Emmy predictions, “Shōgun” is out front to win the top prize on September 15 after scooping up more nominations (25) than any other program during the 2023/24 eligibility period.

Shōgun leads the pack with 25 Emmy nominations with The Bear close behind with 23 nominations.
We may have just left this year’s awards season behind but there’s another major awards ceremony looming in the near future. The Emmy nominations were announced last night and they reflect a great year of TV.
Shōgun, Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks’ ambitious epic based on James Clavell’s novel, received a whopping 25 nominations across all categories. With more seasons of the acclaimed series now planned, Shōgun qualified for the Outstanding Drama category instead of a Limited or Anthology Series.
Shōgun is up for Oustanding Drama Series and Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai are both nominated for Lead Actor and Actress respectively.
The Bear, which just aired its third season, is nominated for 23 Emmys across the board. Controversially, the series is up for Outstanding Comedy Series. The Bear has always toed the line between...

Awards season may well be over on the film front for another year, but on the TV front, the race for golden statue glory is far from over. Earlier today at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, the nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced in a live ceremony fronted by Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph alongside Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. And leading the pack on the nominations front this time around? That'd be feudal Japanese epic Shōgun which, after a dramatic pivot from Limited Series to Drama after news of the series' surprise renewal, has bagged 25 nominations, including nods for stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai as well as shouts for Outstanding Drama, Writing, Direction, and much more besides.

The 2024 Emmys nominations were announced Wednesday morning, with Paul Rudd and Ryan Gosling among the list of first-time nominees.
Rudd earned his first Emmy nod, for best supporting actor in a comedy, for his season three run on Only Murders in the Building. And Ryan Gosling, recognized with a best guest actor in a comedy series nod for hosting a memorable episode of Saturday Night Live, is also a first-time Emmy contender.
Two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts also received her first Emmy nomination for her role in Ryan Murphy’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. She’s nominated in the category of best actress in a limited or anthology series, competing alongside Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country), Brie Larson (Lessons in Chemistry), Juno Temple (Fargo) and Sofía Vergara (Griselda).

Following an abysmal run with disappointing shows and films, Marvel gave us a major banger this year with X-Men ’97. Despite not being set in the primary timeline, the Kevin Feige studio hit it out of the park with this one. With its mature storyline and an eye-pleasing nostalgic 2D animation style, the animated show established itself as one of the best Marvel projects in years.

X-Men storylines have always boasted maturity and have earned praise for symbolizing real-world problems. The quality of X-Men ’97 also proved that the series may be a favorite for the upcoming Emmys. However, from the fans’ discussion on X, it looks like two other shows, Fallout and Shōgun have the upper hand over the animated Marvel show.

I often start analysis of the Emmy nominations by stating how predictable the nominations are, generally with the same shows dominating year after year after year. Well, the overall list of nominees announced this morning was predictable, but it was because pundits largely were forecasting success for shows that aren’t always the same old-same old.
Chief among them was the startling fact that of the eight nominees for marquee Best Drama Series category, only one of them, The Crown, was in the running last year; that is something that hasn’t happened in half a century when The Waltons, which had won the previous year, was the only returning nominee in 1974. But keep in mind there were fewer nominees in those days (six), so this is pretty remarkable. This change is possible because last year’s winner Succession and perennial nominee Better Call Saul — which went 0-for-53 in Emmy...

Just six months after the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards (which were delayed amid the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023), the nominations for the 76th Emmy Awards have been revealed. While things mostly went as expected, a few standouts are worth noting. Apple TV+ and FX have positioned themselves as true competitors against long-dominating networks like Netflix and HBO/Max. Moreover, in a hard-won battle for representation, the Indigenous community and women of color have made significant strides, suggesting that the television landscape has finally turned a corner regarding diversity and inclusion. (Read the full list of nominees here.)

Thirty-four performers across diverse backgrounds received Primetime Emmy nominations today which is even with last year when the Television Academy recognized the same number of nominees in the acting and reality hosting categories.
This year’s count remains above the 2019 low of 26 non-Caucasian actors and reality hosts, yet still far from 2021’s record 49 nominees.
The biggest gain this year was with indigenous performers with Under the Bridge‘s Lily Gladstone and True Detective: Night Country‘s Kali Reis both nominated in the category of Supporting Actress Limited Series, Anthology or Movie.
Also breaking through is Reservation Dogs star D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai who landed a nom in Comedy Series Lead Actor. The Oji-Cree First Nations and Guyanese actor portrays Bear Smallhill on the FX series, which finally landed a Best Comedy Series nod after three years on the air; the show ultimately ending. The 2024 Emmy nominations are out, and this year’s slate of nominees has a solid showing for Asian American, Latino, Indigenous, and LGBTQ representation in the acting categories.
This year, with 96 acting slots up for grabs, there is an increase in the number of people of color nominated across all acting categories, with 30 recognized. Last year’s crop of nominees included 25 people of color. In 2022, 42 people of color were nominated in the acting categories (30 in main and 12 in guest); in 2021, 25 were nominated (19 in main and six in guest).
Indigenous actors and creators were a bright spot in this year’s nominations. Supporting actress (limited) nominees Lily Gladstone from “Under the Bridge” and Kali Reis from “True Detective: Night Country” became the first Indigenous women to be nominated for acting Emmys. The nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced live from Hollywood this morning, and "The Bear" and "Shōgun" appear to be the shows to beat. The two FX on Hulu series earned a stunning 23 and 25 nominations respectively, with "Shōgun" earning several cast members first-time nominations and "The Bear" breaking the Emmys' all-time-record for the most nods in one year in the comedy category. The show –- which, as genre purists will surely point out, is actually a dramedy that often leans towards drama –- beats previous record holder "30 Rock" by one nomination.
Elsewhere on the ballot, it's clear that the absence of HBO juggernaut "Succession" has left a void in the drama category, one that several shows are vying to fill. Period pieces "The Gilded Age" and "The Crown" put up a good showing, while sci-fi shows "Fallout" and "3 Body Problem" also found a spot in the Best Drama Category.

As we enter the new post-Succession era, a fearsome potential ruler has emerged to seize power at the 2024 Emmys.
FX Productions’ lavish Japanese period series Shōgun — a show, incidentally, all about the complicated succession process after the death of an esteemed leader — dominated the drama category announcements Wednesday morning with 25 nominations.
Besides getting a nomination for best drama, Shōgun also earned a best dramatic actor nomination for Hiroyuki Sanada as Yoshii Toranaga, while Anna Sawai took home a nomination for best dramatic actress for her role as Toda Mariko.
In the best supporting dramatic actor competition, there were nominations for Tadanobu Asano, who plays Kashigi Yabushige, and also Takehiro Hira for his role as Ishido Kazunari. There was also a best guest actor in a drama nomination for Nestor Carbonelle for playing the role of Rodrigues.

For five consecutive nights in September 1980, NBC’s Shōgun captivated audiences, drawing between 23M-29M viewers each night. The miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain, Toshiro Mifune and Yoko Shimada, was also a critical success, earning 14 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Limited Series.
Taking on a TV classic is always risky but FX’s adaptation of James Clavell’s novel delivered, becoming FX’s most-watched show ever based on global hours streamed. And this morning, it topped its predecessor with 25 Emmy nominations — the most of any program this year — including Outstanding Drama Series.
The remake, whose haul helped FX net a record 93 Emmy nominations and Disney an all-time high 183 noms, accomplished that in a very competitive field of dozens of linear networks and streamers producing hundreds of original series a year. In 1980, there were three networks, ABC, CBS and NBC.

The upcoming nominations for the best in television have been announced. The list of this year’s nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmys has been announced today by actors Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale in Hollywood. This year’s event has a rare distinction of taking place less than a year after the last event, which had been postponed to January of this year due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes that lasted for a bigger part of the summer and fall in 2023. Last year’s Emmys included winners from such shows as The Bear, Abbott Elementary and HBO’s massively popular series Succession. The ceremony is set to take place on September 15, exactly eight months after the 75th Primetime Emmys were presented on Fox. The Hollywood Reporter has listed the nominations for this year, so here are the 2024 Emmy nominees:

Emmy voters are paying attention. The Television Academy announced nominations for the 76th Emmys on Wednesday morning, and the announcement was filled with historic-making choices and several critically acclaimed names and titles that had been overdue for recognition.
Leading the charge was FX’s “Shogun,” which scored a stunning 25 nominations (including limited series) and scored first-time acting nominations for stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. It was an amazing morning for FX, which landed 93 noms all together — helped also by the record-breaking 23 nominations (the most in Emmy history) for its comedy series “The Bear.”
“The Bear” was already an Emmy superstar, having landed 10 wins in 2023 — making it the most Emmys won by a series in its first season. This time, “The Bear” stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce and Liza Colón-Zayas all received acting nods.

Two Emmy Award ceremonies in one year? The TV industry is going through a lot right now, but there’s something to be said for the shorter interval between Emmy celebrations in 2024 while awards season catches up with the timeline of 2023’s Hollywood strikes. January’s Emmy Awards honored television shows that completed their seasons between June 2022 and May 2023, and September’s ceremony will pick up right after that, with eligible shows premiering between June 2023 and May 2024.
Sheryl Lee Ralph (ABC’s “Abbott Elementary”) and Tony Hale (Netflix’s upcoming “The Decameron”) announced the nominees on July 16 for the 76th Annual Emmy Awards, which will take place on September 15.

Unsurprisingly, Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series front-runners “Shogun” and “The Bear,” respectively, came out on top. “Shogun,” a lavish new historical drama set in feudal Japan, is the leader among all programs with 25 bids including Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada) and Best Drama Actress (Anna Sawai). “The Bear,” meanwhile, sets a new record with 23 bids, the most ever for a comedy series in a single year; the previous record-holder was “30 Rock” with 22 nominations in 2009. “Only Murders in the Building” came close to that record total with 21 total bids including Best Comedy Series and...

This season, the Emmy Awards celebrates its 76th anniversary. What began as a modest ceremony with five awards at the Hollywood Athletic Club has evolved into television’s biggest night, celebrating excellence throughout the industry. In the age of “peak TV” with close to 600 original scripted series, the nominations recognize the importance of the writers, performers and all those who worked on television programs in the past year.

It’s safe to say that the likeliest surprise nominees are those who are backed by multiple Gold Derby predictor subsets despite not appearing on our main forecasted rosters. This includes editor, top 24, and all-star picks Paul W. Downs and Fumi Nikaido as well as two-list hopefuls Maya Rudolph, Christopher Lloyd, and Finn Bennett.
Most of our generally predicted winners are fully agreed upon, but several deviations are still holding strong. Within the last week, our editors broke from the crowd to champion movie/limited actress...

FX’s dramedy about the staff at a struggling Chicago restaurant is expected to pick up an astronomical 16 nominations across seven comedy categories. “Shōgun” led the 40th Television Critics Association Awards on Friday with four wins, including Program of the Year.
The FX show prevailed in every category in which it was nominated as it also won drama series and new program, while Anna Sawai defeated co-star Hiroyuki Sanada for the gender-neutral Individual Achievement in Drama prize. Sawai is the ninth consecutive woman to win the award.
With five nominations apiece, “Shōgun” co-led nominations alongside “Baby Reindeer” and “Ripley.” “Baby Reindeer” won limited series/TV movie/specials, but “Ripley” went 0-5. “Baby Reindeer,” “Ripley,” two limited series, and three-time nominee “Fargo,” an anthology series, were inexplicably nominated in both the limited series/TV movie/specials category and the drama category.

The 40th annual TCA Awards released its list of winners on Friday ahead of the first in-person ceremony in five years. FX’s “Shōgun” led the winners’ circle, taking home four prizes from the Television Critics Assn. — including individual achievement in drama for Anna Sawai, as well as outstanding achievement in drama, program of the year and new program of the year.
The latest season of Max’s “Hacks” also saw success with Jean Smart taking the award for individual achievement in comedy and the series taking home the outstanding achievement in comedy award, beating out last year’s winner, “The Bear,” and 2022’s winner, “Abbott Elementary.”
The TCA recognized David Lynch and Mark Frost’s mystery series “Twin Peaks” with the Heritage Award for its incredible significance and impact. The 1990 series, which was led by Kyle MacLachlan, ran for two seasons.

It’s been quite a long wait, but the Television Critics Association’s annual TCA Awards returns to an in-person event this year for the first time since 2019. After the Covid-19 pandemic and last year’s Hollywood strikes turned everything virtual for five years, the 40th annual TCA Awards takes place at the Langham Pasadena on July 12, during the half-way point of this summer’s TCA press tour.
And looking to get things back on track is host and critics’ fave Wendi McLendon-Covey.
“No pressure,” she jokes. “But my God, it’s going to feel good to actually get to be in person again have that return to normalcy. I love the TCAs, I love meeting everybody. Maybe I’m a nerd, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Earlier this year, “Succession” garnered a whopping 15 Primetime Emmy nominations: a bid for Best Drama Series and 14 for acting. The HBO show from Jesse Armstrong became not just the most-nominated drama of the year but the most recognized show that year, while the 14 acting bids tied its own record from the previous year.
But how about this year? Does any show have a chance of getting close to the dizzying heights of “Succession?” Well, probably not. But we’ve combed through our odds chart to work out which of the shows in contention for Emmy nominations will garner the most bids. We’re going to go through drama, comedy, and limited series/TV movie separately and here we’ll start with drama. Below, we ranked our predicted Best Drama Series nominees in order of least predicted total nominations to most.

The 2024 Emmy nominations announcement being just one week away means that Gold Derby users have been shaping the odds in the 12 main acting races for over five months. At the end of June, eight of the initial dozen frontrunners could be credited with maintaining their top positions all season, but the same now applies to only six of them, all but one of whom are men.
The lone female February frontrunner left standing is Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”), whose victory on her second consecutive drama supporting actress bid seems quite assured. As of this week, she is generally expected to be joined in the winners’ circle by two-time comedy lead champ Jean Smart (“Hacks”), who started the season on top before being usurped by Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) a few weeks in. Now, two months after winning the favor of our Top 24 Users, Smart is every Gold Derby predictor subgroup’s first choice.
