Being recognized as one of the sex symbols of the modern acting industry, Eva Green is definitely very much of a skilled horror performer.
It’s proved by her fruitful collaborations with Tim Burton that include dark comedy Dark Shadows (2012) and gothic fantasy Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016).
Green’s talent for depicting mysterious women with supernatural abilities shines even brighter in a TV show that was unfairly forgotten by the audience. It’s still hailed by fans who claim every horror veteran should immediately put it on their watchlist.
Set in Victorian London, it starts by introducing us to Sir Malcolm, a witty explorer whose daughter goes missing, and he blames the city’s mysterious creatures for it.
That’s why he teams up with seductive clairvoyant Vanessa (played by Green) who promises to help him to find his daughter and to catch some monsters in the way.

Renowned French filmmaker Mia Hansen-Løve (One Fine Morning) has revealed her next film to be If Love Should Die, a biopic of 18th century English writer, philosopher, and women’s rights advocate, Mary Wollstonecraft.
Slated to film in the United Kingdom, France, Scandinavia and Portugal in 2025, the project’s logline is as follows: On the eve of the French Revolution, an impoverished young Englishwoman makes the bold decision to leave her life according to the ideals of the enlightenment.
Wollstonecraft is best known for her work A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, published in 1792, where she argued that women are not naturally inferior to men, even if they appeared so in her time because they lacked equal access to education. Wollstonecraft believed that both men and women should be treated as rational beings and imagined a social order founded on reason. Her ideas and writings laid the groundwork for the feminist movement,...

Few directors capture modern life so vividly as Mia Hansen-Løve, and only in some cases does she show it in English-language contexts. Suggesting something of a bold leap, then, to read her next feature, If Love Should Die, will concern the 18th-century English feminist philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft. An official synopsis tells us it’s set “on the eve of the French Revolution,” concerning “an impoverished young Englishwoman makes the bold decision to lead her life according to the ideals of the enlightenment.” Which implies a multi-lingual production––Wollstonecraft also spoke French and German––a hunch supported by the notice that cameras roll next year in the United Kingdom, France, Scandinavia, and Portugal. Mubi will produce and co-finance with Arte France Cinema. [THR]

The first episode of the fourth season of "The Twilight Zone" — titled "In His Image" — opens with a startling act of violence. Alan Talbot (George Grizzard) is approached by an evangelist while waiting at a subway station, and his simmering irritation with her triggers a strange sensation: electronic beeps zap his brain, leading him to push her on the tracks. The woman is killed by the oncoming train, and Alan flees, reappearing a while later with his fiancée Jessica (Gail Kobe) near his hometown. He seems to have no recollection of his transgression at the subway.
As series creator and host Rod Serling states in the episode's opening narration, this is just the beginning of the nightmarish hell Alan is about to experience, as he stands at the cusp of a world both real and dream-like. Alan's tale is based on Charles Beaumont's captivating short story "In His Image,...

Sure, irradiated zombies and bloodthirsty apocalypse bikers can be pretty scary. Draculas and Frankensteins? Scary. Cthulhus… Mothmen… Graboids? The absolute worst. But for indie content creators, no boogeyman or cryptid is quite as hair-raising as the many great and monstrous leviathans ritualistically summoned by the occult and alchemical ritual known as filmmaking. Look: there’s Shaky Financing dragging itself out of the swamp, eyes burning blood red! And there: Collapsing Theatrical Market, unfurling its batwings in the rafters of the old abbey! And so on and so on.
But! As the Cryptkeeper, Vaultkeeper and Old Witch have reminded us many times before, misery loves company. So rather than hanging on the edge of your seat anxiously peering through ragged knuckles at the current (but only temporary!) dumpster-fire state of your latest film project, instead console yourself with the fact that many of your Halloweentime horror favorites have had their own very bumpy rides.

By the 1950s, the Universal Monsters had become a punchline with most of them ending their onscreen careers meeting Abbott and Costello. Many of them had become victims of their own success, becoming so iconic that they had lost any ability to frighten anybody. Creatures from outer space, radioactive monsters, and giant bugs had taken over the throne as horror’s reigning attractions and anything that deviated from these felt passé and played out. Universal itself supplied plenty of its own creations into this theatrical landscape and relegated its classic monsters to the small screen. Into this environment came something new from the studio that all but created the modern horror film when Universal unleashed Creature from the Black Lagoon into the world.
There is much about the Creature that is similar to the Universal monsters that have come before. Like Lon Chaney’s Phantom, Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein Monster,...

Like its genre cousin, science fiction, horror films have long used supernatural terrors as stand-ins for real-life fears. When Jordan Peele used the genre to show white supremacy as the ultimate terror in “Get Out,” he was inspired by years of socio-political readings of his favorite horror films. Even though openly LGBTQ characters in horror were rare until recently, when it comes to queer subtext, the genre is ripe for exploring themes such as possession, body transformation, fear of the other, uncontrollable desire, and hidden identities.
As explored in Shudder’s exhaustive docuseries “Queer For Fear: The History of Queer Horror,” the history of horror aligns pretty significantly with the history of queer film. The series traces the genre’s origins, beginning with a reclamation of Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker as queer writers, through Alfred Hitchcock’s many queer-coded films, and runs all the way to Ryan Murphy’s “American Horror Story” empire.

Maggie Gyllenhaal has added another cast member to her upcoming take on The Bride of Frankenstein, and it's someone she knows very well.
In a new piece on the Spider-Man: Far From Home and Roadhouse star, THR reports that Jake Gyllenhaal has joined the cast of The Bride!, but don't reveal any details on his character.
Gyllenhaal (Maggie) recently took to Instagram to share the first ever production stills from the film, giving us a glimpse of Christian Bale as Frankenstein's Monster, and Jessie Buckley as the misunderstood creature's titular Bride.
We first heard about this project back in 2022 when it was being developed for Netflix, but a follow-up report indicated that the film had been shelved shortly after the Hollywood strikes got underway, and was being shopped elsewhere. More recently, we'd learn that Warner Bros. had acquired The Bride!, which is now set for a theatrical release on October 3rd,...

Guillermo Del Toro is doing a version of the Mary Shelley story due next year. No stranger to remakes, interpretations of nostalgia, and comedy with Clive/Karloff or Lee/Cushing or perhaps even De Niro/Branagh or someone else as a reference point. In the late eighties/ early nineties, shortly after they did Predator together, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John McTiernan and writer Shane Black were all set to team on a big-budget movie adaptation of the DC comic book Sgt. Rock. This is why, at the end of Predator, Black is seen reading a Sgt Rock comic during the cast roll. According to author Nick de Semlyan’s new book, “The Last Action Heroes” (buy it here), the project was heavily developed in ’88 and ’89, only to be demolished by an unlikely candidate – Monty Python’s John Cleese.

Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley would certainly raise a toast to their characters in Jose Prendes’ Monster Mash. Victor Frankenstein sends his creature Boris to abduct Count Dracula’s daughter, Elisabeta. Dracula gathers a few old friends who are victims of Frankenstein to stop him from creating a monster that can be the end of the world. A fright warning before the climax is one of the funniest things in this crazy rollercoaster of a movie.

Mary Shelley's genre novel landmark Frankenstein is one source material that, like Sherlock Holmes, Dracula or Garfield, filmmakers just can't somehow stay away from. Perhaps it's because the story of a man and his creation offers so many potential thematic choices. Or because actors just love playing the stitched-up result of the doctor's work. In this case, we have writer/director Maggie Gyllenhaal offering up the first looks at Christian Bale as the creature and Jessie Buckley as his chosen Bride. Check out Bale above and the other images below…
From the looks of these, Gyllenhaal (marking her second directorial effort after the Oscar-nominated The Lost Daughter) has certainly put a new spin on the classic story (or more accurately The Bride Of Frankenstein).
Your official synopsis runs as follows: A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of Dr. Euphonious in creating a companion for himself.

Maggie Gyllenhaal has shared a first look at Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley in The Bride.
On Thursday morning, the director uploaded images from a camera test on Instagram, featuring Bale’s latest onscreen transformation into Frankenstein, along with his paramour, the eponymous bride (Buckley). The photos were taken by film photographer Niko Tavernise.
Bale’s version of the monster features a scarred face, sutures on his forehead and a stitched-up chest adorned with a tattoo that reads “Hope.” Meanwhile, Buckley appears in a bleached-blond, finger-waved hairstyle, with ink splatter covering her cheek.

Mary Shelley’s magnum opus Frankenstein might have highlighted the theme prominently with potent fright and nuance, but creators being haunted by their creations has been a recurrent motif in art and literature since antiquities. In works of merit, a thorough delineation of the topic often entails a narrative discussion of topics like the tribulations and failures involving the creative process, the pursuit of perfection, hindrances through self-doubt, the search for a creative voice, etc. Robert Morgan’s Stopmotion, a doomed, grotesque celebration of everything creative, juggles all these topics and more with enough care as to not become tedious or pretentious while teetering on the midpoint of psychological and supernatural horror at the same time. By no means is it implied that the movie reinvents the genre or subverts expectations, as it mostly retreads familiar tracks while showcasing the horrors that can plague a creative mind. Stopmotion excels in acing the basics,...

The battle between creationism and science has been long-standing. Some believe God created humans, while others argue that humans created God—a theme explored by countless writers and philosophers. Yet, conclusions on this matter often rely solely on speculation. As someone with an aversion to creationism, I find myself contemplating that the creation of God might be part of an inevitable cycle. To delve deeper into this notion, it seems that in our fragile civilization, the tendency to create a god and immortalize it comes as a distraction from hopelessness and the fear of death.
I also believe that, originally, the fear of death was supposed to humble us. It was supposed to teach us humility and remind us that death spares no one. But then we created the idea of an afterlife, rebirth, and whatnot, nullifying the significance of death in the process. As we gradually realized our ability...

West Country director Paul Dudbridge appears to be working his way through the Gothic classics. Having directed Fear The Invisible Man in 2023, he picks up Mary Shelley’s classic in a familiar place – the same place that polar explorer Captain Walton picks up Frankenstein himself during his frantic journey across the ice in pursuit of his creation. This section of the story is pretty much a straight retelling, but rather than continuing with the Captain’s account of what his unlikely passenger told him, we follow Frankenstein’s journal as it is sold on by a sailor and passed down through the years from one scientist to another – each of them hoping to repeat the experiment described within.
Whilst it might have been interesting to see a little more of these experiments, Dudbridge makes what is probably the sensible choice, on his modest budget, and focuses on just one. 95 years.

Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein remains as influential as ever, with numerous notable adaptations and horror movies inspired by the literary classic released in the last year alone. That extends to comics, too, with Skybound Entertainment revealing via IGN today that they’re reviving the horror icon with comic series Universal Monsters: Frankenstein.
Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #1 will be released on August 28, 2024.
The four-issue limited series will be written and drawn by The Silver Coin creator Michael Walsh. The limited series follows up Skybound’s Universal Monsters: Dracula and Universal Monsters: Creature From the Black Lagoon series.
Like its predecessors, Universal Monsters: Frankenstein won’t be a straightforward adaptation. In the comic, “Dr. Henry Frankenstein robs a police officer’s grave to find body parts for his new creation, only to discover that the officer’s son is still yearning for his dead father. If only Mary Shelley could've lived to see a Frankenstein story with a twist quite like this one. Horror fans have been waiting quite some time for writer Diablo Cody to get another kick at the horror can after 2009's "Jennifer's Body," the Megan Fox-starring flick that's taken on the air of a genuine cult classic after initially bombing among critics and audiences alike. For Millennials of a certain age, time has been kind to the unabashedly feminist story of a demon possessing a high school student and developing a taste for male flesh (as one does), and now the time has come for everyone to offer up a long-overdue mea culpa. Luckily, this year's release of the hilariously offbeat "Lisa Frankenstein" feels like the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Stephen King is, as his name suggests, the king of horror fiction (while occasionally delving into other genres). The combination of his vivid writing style, characters with unique personalities and special abilities, and epic stories that unfurl with riveting suspense make his work rife for cinematic interpretation. Within these spine-chilling stories, King infuses keen observations on the human condition, and how evil — both supernatural and real — manifests in our society. Stephen King's literary works have produced some of the greatest films of all time including Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," Brian De Palma's "Carrie," and Rob Reiner's "Stand By Me." Over 70 of his novels and short stories have been adapted into films or television shows, but since he is such a prolific writer — often churning out several books each year — there are countless that have yet to be adapted. Peter Sarsgaard Teases Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein Film: ‘A Romantic, Wild, Punk Monster Movie’
As Hollywood productions begin to pick up steam again, it seems as if everyone in the film industry has Frankenstein on their minds.
One of the year’s first studio releases was Diablo Cody and Zelda Williams’ “Lisa Frankenstein,” which reimagined Mary Shelley’s classic novel of reanimation gone wrong as a contemporary teen comedy. That film will be followed by two other high profile adaptations that entered production this month: Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” which stars Oscar Isaac as the mad scientist alongside Mia Goth and Jacob Elordi as The Monster; and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming sophomore feature, which reportedly stars Christian Bale as a version of Frankenstein’s monster who pursues love in 1930s Chicago in a riff on “The Bride of Frankenstein.”

When it comes to pushing the limits physically and mentally for a role, it is difficult to look past Christian Bale. The British actor is not just known for his memorable performances on screen, but also for his extreme modes of preparation that he adopts to get into the skin of his characters. From resorting to brutal diets for his roles in American Psycho and The Fighter to sacrificing sleep to play an insomniac in The Machinist, Bale has done it all for the love of his craft.
