The late Treat Williams received a posthumous nomination for best supporting actor at the 2024 Emmys for his role in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.
Williams died after a motorcycle accident on June 12, 2023. He was 71 years old. His Emmy nomination for a limited or anthology series comes after the final curtain call for his role as CBS head Bill Paley in the second season of Feud.
At the time of this death, 20th Century TV and FX said in a statement: “Treat Williams leaves behind a legacy of remarkable performances in film and television, and an indelible mark on the entire industry. All who were fortunate enough to work with Treat over his four-decade career would agree that his incredible talent was matched only by his utter kindness. He was a friend and inspiration to many, and he will be deeply missed by his colleagues. Our hearts go out to his family during this time.

Will Ferrell reunited with his “Anchorman” co-star Christina Applegate on an episode of the latter’s “Messy” podcast, where the duo reflected on the 20th anniversary of their comedy classic. Ferrell remembered the first test screening for “Anchorman” and how it did not go according to plan.
“It was such a hard movie to get made in the first place and when it finally came around to when, ‘Oh wait, now Dreamworks wants to make it,’ it just felt like we were playing with the house’s money,” Ferrell said (via IndieWire). “So we were like, ‘Ok, gosh, they’re letting us make this crazy movie. Let’s just do all the comedy things we’ve wanted to try that other people have said, “No, you can’t do that in a comedy,”‘” Ferrell said. “We were just breaking the rules and having so much fun.”

Recent documentaries about Albert Brooks and Steve Martin give the comics their rightful flowers for introducing a fresh comic persona to popular culture — the smarmy show-biz performer, polished, unctuous and self-satisfied to the point of absurdity. But Martin Mull, the accomplished musician, painter and comedian who passed away yesterday at the age of 80, deserves to be mentioned in their company.
Fernwood 2 Night, a spin-off of Norman Lear’s Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, is one of those comedies more influential than beloved — no cable network has been running repeats for years. But catch a few episodes (thanks, Internet Archive!) and you’ll hear its echoes in It’s Garry Shandling’s Show and the mockumentaries of Christopher Guest. Mull starred as Barth Gimble, the obnoxiously hip co-host of a local talk show set in the fictional town of Fernwood, Ohio alongside Fred Willard’s clueless Jerry Hubbard.

He was one of the major stars of the 1970s, first as a singer/songwriter and then as part of the iconic Norman Lear comedies Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and its spinoff, Fernwood 2 Night.
Today, the wit and charisma Mull brought to his craft was fondly remembered by his peers as word of his passing at age 80 spread.

Martin Mull, who played Colonel Mustard in Clue, Roseanne’s boss Leon Carp in the ABC comedy Roseanne and starred on Norman Lear’s Fernwood 2 Nite, died Thursday at his home. He was 80.
The news was revealed by his daughter Maggie Mull, an exec producer on Family Guy.
“I am heartbroken to share that my father passed away at home on June 27th, after a valiant fight against a long illness. He was known for excelling at every creative discipline imaginable and also for doing Red Roof Inn commercials. He would find that joke funny. He was never not funny. My dad will be deeply missed by his wife and daughter, by his friends and coworkers, by fellow artists and comedians and musicians, and—the sign of a truly exceptional person—by many, many dogs. I loved him tremendously,” she wrote.

The first season of the Boston-set Frasier reboot obviously didn’t feature the late John Mahoney as Martin Crane, and David Hyde Pierce famously declined the opportunity to return as Niles, ultimately leaving little connective tissue between the two shows. And we haven’t even mentioned the fact that Frasier’s son Freddie now has an entirely new face.

At least Season Two will bring back Peri Gilpin’s Roz in a “recurring capacity,” and apparently Bulldog and Gill will make an appearance for some reason. After all, who amongst us wouldn’t travel across the country just to visit an ex-co-worker?
In a lot of ways, Frasier 2.0 feels like just another Kelsey Grammer sitcom, of which there have been many. So let’s take a look back at some of the Grammer-led comedies that probably would have done better had he simply changed the main character’s name to “Frasier Crane,...

This Is Spinal Tap is one of the most quotable films in cinema history and defined the genre of film known today as the mockumentary.
Rob Reiner’s 1984 directorial debut about an aging English metal band chronicled fame, groupies and their fateful tour and would set the bar for the style of film to satirize a subject depicting fictional events but presented as a documentary. They often use the conventions of traditional documentaries, such as interviews and narration, to tell a fictional or exaggerated story.
Christopher Guest, who portrayed Nigel Tufnel in This Is Spinal Tap, would go on to direct and star with an incredible ensemble cast in many of his productions that included Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Catherine O’Hara, Parker Posey, Fred Willard, Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge in the classic mockumentaries Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration and Mascots.

Australian actress Ashleigh Brewer is returning to The Bold and the Beautiful as forgotten Forrester, Ivy, who hasn’t been seen on the hit daytime soap opera since 2018. The news comes after fans spotted Brewer in snaps from the show’s 37th-anniversary party over the weekend, where she reunited with her former castmates. But she wasn’t just there to celebrate; as reported by Soap Hub, Brewer is returning to the show on-screen. Brewer, who rose to fame on Australian soap Neighbours, joined The Bold and the Beautiful in 2014, playing Ivy, Eric Forrester’s (John McCook) niece, the daughter of John Forrester (Fred Willard), and half-sister of Jessica Forrester (Maitland Ward). During her time on the show, Ivy was romantically involved with Liam (Scott Clifton), Wyatt (Darin Brooks), and even her (non-blood-related) cousin Thomas. Should Ivy reunite with any of these former flames, there is sure to be lingering tension.

Dan Wilcox, an Emmy-winning writer, producer and longtime union man who penned dozens of M*A*S*H episodes including co-writing its record-setting series finale and had many other TV credits including Sesame Street and Fernwood/America 2-Nite, has died. He was 82.
His niece, Julie Merson Rothenberg, told the WGA that he died February 14 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. No cause was given.
A six-decade WGA member and longtime former board member who was active in the 2007-08 strike, Wilcox was a fierce champion of unions and equal rights. In 2017, he received the Morgan Cox Award in recognition of his exemplary service to the Guild. Wgaw President Howard A. Rodman said at the time: “Dan Wilcox has been, in a sustained and deeply moving way, a voice for the voiceless. His work, at once passionate and effective, has been on behalf of those who might otherwise lack the...

Surely the making of one of the funniest movies ever made can’t be that serious…and it really isn’t! Ok, 1980’s Airplane! was a tough sell and there were minor clashes between the directors and Paramount and lawsuits from a rival studio threatened the casting of numerous stars. But there was also perfect against-type casting, clever workarounds to silly DGA regulations and a complete reinvention of the spoof movie, all of which made Airplane! one of the greatest comedies ever.. Oh, and there were fart machines, too!
And so let’s park the taxi, avoid the fish and check in on our drinking problem as we find out: Wtf Happened to this movie?!
Airplane! has its origins in the Kentucky Fried Theater, which the trio of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker (collectively known as Zaz) founded in 1971. One act the fellas grew fond of was dubbing...

Here’s a fun fact: Thanks to his lineage, writer/director/actor Christopher Guest has an inherited royal title — the 5th Baron Haden-Guest — and for three years was an active member of the British House of Lords. In his spare time, however, Baron Haden-Guest makes delightfully silly movies that make audiences around the globe very happy.
Guest largely worked as an actor in the 1970s, with stage and TV appearances mixed with occasional side gigs with the satirists The National Lampoon. His breakthrough role came in 1984 as lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel in Rob Reiner‘s classic comedy “This Is Spinal Tap,” whose improvisational style proved to be an enormous influence when Guest began directing films five years later. That technique came to full fruition in his second directorial effort, 1996’s “Waiting For Guffman,” where he gathered together a group of great comic actors who formed a loose repertory company that...

It's time to rent a Family Truckster, cue up Lindsey Buckingham's "Holiday Road," and hope our wife doesn't catch us checking out a mysterious hot babe in a sports car -- because it's time to rank all of the films in the "Vacation" franchise. Part family drama, part romantic comedy, part slapstick showcase, and 100 percent a showcase for Chevy Chase to prove why he's Chevy Chase and we're not, National Lampoon's "Vacation" series is home to some of the best bits in American comedy cinema.
Whether they're staying at home for the holidays, pressing their luck in Vegas, traveling cross country, or flying overseas, the Griswolds have set the bar hellishly low for family vacations (which means the only place to go is up for the rest of us). Norman Lear, who died today at 101, had been in the TV business for more than 70 years. Along the way, he’d written and created some of the most iconic and groundbreaking shows in television history and worked with some of the biggest of Hollywood’s stars.
After World War II, where he was decorated for his service in a B-52 bomber, Lear broke into show biz in 1950 as a writer on All Star Revue, where he worked with such legendary comedians as Jimmy Durante, Danny Thomas, Martha Raye and George Jessel. He followed that by working on the Colgate Comedy Hour with the likes of Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Bob Hope, Abbott and Costello and Eddie Cantor.
Those gigs led to Lear working on The Martha Raye Show, The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show, Henry Fonda and Family and the film The Night They Raided Minsky’s.

In 2022, Nathan Lane became the sole record holder for most Best Comedy Guest Actor Emmy nominations (six) and then achieved his very first TV academy honor for his work on “Only Murders in the Building.” Having just earned another bid for the Hulu series, he could soon join six other two-time recipients of this award, including back-to-back champs Jay Thomas (“Murphy Brown”) and Mel Brooks (“Mad About You”). Although his chances are strong, he also faces the unique challenge of having to fend off a fellow former winner.
Seeking a bookend trophy of his own is “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” guest actor Luke Kirby, who was lauded for the same series in 2019. Lane is also involved in an immediate rematch with Sam Richardson (“Ted Lasso”) and faces fresh opposition from category newcomer Oliver Platt (“The Bear”) and Emmy first-timers Jon Bernthal (“The Bear”) and Pedro Pascal (“Saturday Night Live”).

Rian Johnson‘s “Poker Face” has emerged as one of the most enjoyable new TV series of the last year as he returns to the murder-mystery genre with this episodic, case-of-the-week format that clearly delights those on-screen as much as it does those watching it.
The comedy show follows Natasha Lyonne as Charlie, who has an uncanny ability to determine if somebody is lying. She goes on the run from the casino she used to work at after a suspicious death occurs and then, on her travels, she meets a vast array of colorful characters as she solves a new murder each week on her road trip.
Each week presents new actors having the time of their lives and one of those people is the Oscar-winning Adrien Brody, who features as Sterling Frost Jr, the casino manager who is also the son of Ron Perlman‘s ruthless Sterling Frost Snr.

The group, which featured George Memmoli, Michael Mislove, Patti Deutsch, and Fred Willard, found success in the 1960s and 70s, even appearing on Tom Jones‘ 1971 ABC variety special. NPRmageddon is a ten-part post-apocalyptic sci-fi arthouse radio show audio drama adjective-rich podcast in the style of public radio, broadcast from the United States of “Lost” Angeles.
Creators Bryan Keithley and Peter Podgursky tell Save the Cat, “We based our storytelling on how modern media operates and what National Public Radio sounds like now.
“Our approach with NPRmageddon was to give our listeners the good stuff—to lean on one-off stories heavy on science fiction and horror tropes, but to push those tropes through the lens of public media journalism. Step through a typical episode of NPRmageddon, and you’ll find a delicious selection of news-y mayhem worthy of any headline-grabbing lineup from the real world—from marauding mutants to rogue AI’s to parasitic pulsating brains.

Can you believe that it's been nearly 20 years since "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" was released? The utterly gonzo workplace satire from Adam McKay and Will Ferrell is still probably the movie I've laughed the hardest at in the theater, and every time I have seen it since, I still weep from laughter. Obviously, lines like "Milk was a bad choice" and "60 of the time it works every time" are howlers, but it's even the small things, like the runner about Fred Willard being on the phone to his son's Catholic school about what a menace the kid is, still tickles me.
What I admire so much about "Anchorman" is for how expansive and crazy it is, the story it tells is actually quite focused, and the film comes in at a lean 94 minutes. For a Judd Apatow-produced movie, that is a minor miracle, as the films with...

This essay is one of several contributed by filmmakers and actors as part of Variety’s 100 Greatest Movies of All Time package.
How do you pick the greatest movies of all time? What are the requirements? How about a movie that you have watched a hundred times? How about a movie that stars all of your favorite funny people being as funny as they have ever been? How about a comedy that is gentle, riotous and infectious?
I’ve never understood why that wasn’t as important as “Citizen Kane” when making these lists. Well, “Waiting for Guffman” is my “Citizen Kane.” Has anyone watched “Citizen Kane” more than three times? Maybe eight people. Does anyone think Orson Welles’ performance is better than Eugene Levy’s in “Guffman”? If you were feeling down about the state of the world, what would you watch, “Waiting for Guffman” or “Citizen Kane”? They...

Pixar’s save-the-world eco-epic actually begins with the world destroyed, before a pair of cute robots help put it back together again. Andrew Stanton’s animated comedy finds hope and cheer in a post-apocalyptic scenario, a tall order for any speculative science fiction tale. Meet Wall•E, the nuts ‘n’ bolts super-janitor, and Eve, the sleek next-generation seeker of terrestrial plant re-birth. Good satire and social criticism comes in the brightest package possible in this endearing charmer.

Fall is upon us, and that brings the changing of the leaves, apple cider, and of course, scary movies. Seeing scary movies when you’re a little kid is the best. Really wanting to see what all the bigger kids are seeing but also being scared of what you just saw. It’s a magical time to be alive. With Hocus Pocus 2 about to hit Disney+, now is a great time to run down the best kid’s films for Halloween. These are guaranteed to frighten your little ones but not leave you unable to sleep after they crawl into your bed at night.
Honorable Mention: The Monster Squad (1987)
While this film was a mainstay of my childhood, if you look at it today, some of the language hasn’t aged very well. I still love this film as I can look past its flaws and remember...

Stephen King’s second published novel, ‘Salem’s Lot, arrived in hardcover in October 1975 and was King’s next step toward transforming himself from an obscure Maine writer to a pop culture phenomenon. His first novel, Carrie, had sold modestly in hardcover, but the paperback edition of the book took off, selling more than one million copies in its first year of release. Sales were also helped by Brian De Palma’s 1976 movie adaptation, which was not just a box office hit but yielded Academy Award nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.
And the paperback edition of ‘Salem’s Lot came out right around this time; it became King’s second bestseller in a row and cemented his status as a superstar horror writer. The book, at its core, also posed a simple yet alluring question: What if vampires invaded a small town in rural Maine in the 20th century?...

On the surface, "Wall-e" is a heart-warming adventure about an earnest robot that saves humanity and finds love along the way. The 2008 film is one of the best Pixar films ever made, worthy of its entry into the vaunted Criterion Collection. It offers simple entertainment for the kids and something meatier for adults, in true Pixar fashion. Unlike most films from the studio, "Wall-e" doesn't have much in the way of double entendres. Granted, it's hard to do that when the robots and the humans are almost indistinguishable from one another. Instead, it is the questions raised by the story itself that merits adult consideration.
"Wall-e" openly tackles themes such as conservation and identity. Kids would need to be strapped to the film's hover chairs not to notice these overarching messages, but there are many deeper themes they just won't notice. Innocence has its privileges. Fair warning: "Wall-e" is a colorful animated film,...

As Gold Derby predicted, Nathan Lane finally broke his streak of five Best Comedy Guest Actor Emmy losses by taking the gold for “Only Murders in the Building” at the 2022 Creative Arts ceremony. Upon receiving this nomination in July, he became the sole record holder for most bids in the category after having previously shared the distinction with the late Fred Willard. His past notices came for comedic appearances on “Frasier” (1995), “Mad About You” (1998) and “Modern Family”.
Those who were bested by Lane in this contest were Jerrod Carmichael (“Saturday Night Live”), Bill Hader (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), James Lance (“Ted Lasso”), Christopher McDonald (“Hacks”) and Sam Richardson (“Ted Lasso”). All are Emmy newcomers except Hader, who has amassed 25 nominations since 2009, including two others in this category for “Saturday Night Live”. This year, his work on the comedy series “Barry” has also brought him lead acting, producing, directing and writing bids.

Nathan Lane, a three-time Tony Award winner, has been a guest-starring fixture on broadcast with scene-stealing roles on some of television’s most popular series over the past two decades. Heading into this year, he had earned six Emmy nominations, three for comedy Modern Family and one each for comedies Frasier and Mad About You and drama The Good Wife.
In July, Lane landed his seventh Guest Actor Emmy nomination, surpassing the late Fred Willard to become the most-nominated guest actor ever across comedy and drama. It was Lane’s first nom for a non-broadcast series, Hulu’s comedy Only Murders In the Building. Tonight, the veteran actor converted, winning his first Emmy.

This story about Nathan Lane and “Only Murders in the Building” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap magazine.
Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” ended up with a considerable nomination haul on July 12, with 17 nods in total — and one of them quietly made history. That nom went to Nathan Lane, a three-time Tony winner for both plays and musicals with an equally considerable film and TV résumé to call his own, including celebrated turns in “The Birdcage” and “The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” Lane’s nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series marked his sixth in the category, a record that surpasses the late Fred Willard’s five career nods.
It’s also Lane’s seventh overall for his TV work, which includes a drama-series guest nomination for “The Good Wife” several years back. “It’s lovely...

“No one else acts the way she acts,” says director Christopher Guest of his frequent collaborator Jennifer Coolidge. “I don’t mean acting as an actor. I mean behaves the way she behaves.”
Coolidge, currently a first-time Emmy nominee for HBO’s “The White Lotus,” is on the cover of this week’s edition of Variety; she first became known to many for her work with Guest, which includes roles in “Best in Show” (2000), “A Mighty Wind” (2003), “For Your Consideration” (2006), and “Mascots” (2016). In those movies, Guest says in a rare interview, “It’s so striking to see her with other people, because she’s on a different plane of her own reality.”
Guest’s movies are improvised by their actors, who come in armed with backstories and the plot but then, when the cameras roll, “people basically begin to talk,” he says. “It’s impossible to audition for that. I...

For over four decades, character actor Christopher McDonald has maintained a reputation as a reliable portrayer of smarmy scoundrels, with his quintessential role being that of Shooter McGavin in 1996’s “Happy Gilmore.” His hundreds of film and TV projects have allowed him to both expand his range and perfect the practice of mining nuggets of humanity from his usually roguish characters. Now, he has finally caught the attention of Emmy voters in the Best Comedy Guest Actor category for the HBO Max comedy series “Hacks.”
McDonald has appeared in 11 “Hacks” episodes as Marty Ghilain, the CEO of the fictional Palmetto casino in Las Vegas. Throughout the show’s two seasons, Ghilain has been involved in a power struggle with the Palmetto’s former headliner, stand-up comic Deborah Vance (Jean Smart). History was made when the 2022 Primetime Emmy nominations were announced, as Chadwick Boseman (“What If…?”) and Jessica Walter (“Archer”) became the first pair of direct competitors to be recognized posthumously. They are both up for the Best Character Voice-Over Performance prize after having passed away in August 2020 and March 2021, respectively.
Walter is now the only performer to ever receive two post-death Emmy bids, having just contended in the same category last summer. Now including Boseman, the list of departed acting Emmy nominees consists of 26 entrants, four of whom were honored with wins.
The first actor to be nominated for and win an Emmy posthumously was Alice Pearce, who was awarded the Best Comedy Supporting Actress trophy for “Bewitched” two months after her death in 1966. The other three champs, all of whom triumphed for TV movie performances, are supporting players David Burns and Diana Hyland and lead Raul Julia.

Only Murders in the Building guest star Nathan Lane set an Emmy record this morning as he landed his seventh nomination, becoming the most-nominated guest actor, across comedy and drama categories, in the history of television. The three-time Tony winner’s nom, in the category of Comedy Guest Actor, follows three for Modern Family, and one apiece for roles on Mad About You and Frasier, along with a sole Drama Guest Actor nom for The Good Wife. When Deadline caught up with the actor this morning to discuss the recognition, he teased where his Only Murders character Teddy Dimas is headed, at the same time revealing new details about a pair of anticipated A24 films in which he stars: Ari Aster’s horror Disappointment Blvd. and Larry Charles’ comedy F***ing Identical Twins.

Chadwick Boseman, Norm Macdonald and Jessica Walter each received posthumous 2022 Emmy nominations.
Boseman, who passed away in 2020 after a private battle with colon cancer, earned a best character voice-over nod for his role as Star Lord T’Challa in the Marvel Studios and Disney+ series What If…? episode “What If… T’Challa Became A Star-Lord?” He was also nominated for a posthumous Oscar for lead actor for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Boseman’s legacy remains inseparable from mainstream culture — his breakout work in Black Panther helped propel that film to become the first superhero movie ever nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards. The film’s sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is scheduled for release later this year, with Ryan Coogler returning to direct.
Macdonald’s nom comes from his final comedy special, Nothing Special, which debuted on Netflix.
