When Gloria Gaynor watched the eponymous feature doc about the last eight years of her life, she thanked the director Betsy Schechter and started to sing a cappella. It was a moment that Schechter said she’d “never forget”.
Gaynor expected to do the same thing when Gloria Gaynor: I Will Survive premieres at the Tribeca Festival on Friday.
The film has been a labor of love for Schechter, who runs Storyville Entertainment.
The doc tells Gaynor’s story – a career stalled by health issues and abuse and mismanagement from her now ex-husband – but it focuses on the last few years when she released a new gospel album, Testimony, which won her a second Grammy, 40 years after her first.
It chronicles this comeback journey and highlights the support from her manager Stephanie Gold and what it took to get back to where she is, having earned a psychology degree in her later years.

In October of 2021, Amazon Studios announced it was acquiring Trevor Beck Frost and Melissa Lesh’s “Wildcat” for a price nearing 20 million, a staggering sum for a doc of its kind. Produced by 30West, the film tells the story of former British soldier Harry Turner and conservationist Samantha Wicker, who help heal each other while caring for a small ocelot wildcat in the deep Peruvian rainforest.
This is Frost and Lesh’s first feature film. Frost comes from a still photography background, with work published in National Geographic and the New York Times, while Lesh has previously worked with short films. The documentary has picked up considerable steam on the brink of awards season, having recently been nominated for two IDA Documentary Awards for editing and score (Patrick Jonsson).

IDFA is going wild for Wildcat.
The documentary from Amazon Studios screened a couple of times over the weekend at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, to resounding effect, filmmakers Melissa Lesh and Trevor Frost tell Deadline. Screenings on Friday and Sunday took place at the Pathé Tuschinski Theatre, a glorious old movie palace that rivals Mann’s Chinese in splendor.
“To have two standing ovations in a theater like that,” Lesh commented at a party after Sunday’s event, “on the biggest screen we’ve screened on yet, and to have the audience so engaged and moved, I feel like it’s been our best screenings yet.”

Exclusive: The team behind Gloria: I Will Survive, a feature documentary about the artist, has grown strong and learned how to get along.
Storyville Entertainment, the production company behind the doc, founded by Betsy Schechter, has brought on board editor David Zieff, who worked on seminal rock doc Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, and producer Pippa Lambert, as it heads to the finish line.

Matthew Heineman’s “The First Wave” takes audiences to the frontlines as New York became America’s epicenter at the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Heineman’s camera follows doctors, nurses and patients in a cinema vérité, as he shows the strength of the human spirit. Behind the scenes, he worked with editors Francisco Bello, Gabriel Rhodes and David Zieff to follow along and start weaving the dailies together.
Rhodes says they went through mountains of footage captured by Heineman at Long Island’s Jewish Medical Center in Queens, N.Y., from March to June in 2020. “There was so much footage, especially in the trauma wards, where it was just death, death, death, death, death, death, and the families being separated by iPads.”
Because the editors and Heineman were living the same thing they were documenting, it hit close to home. “Especially in those early weeks when we knew so little about the disease,...

This year’s nominees were led by “Ascension” and “Summer of Soul,” two films by first-time documentarians. Each had six nominations. But “Ascension,” Jessica Kingdon’s look at the pursuit of the Chinese dream, failed to score any prizes November 14.

50 fabulous documentary films, covering hard politics through to music, money and films that never were...
Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, we’ve never had better access to documentaries. A whole new audience can discover that these real life stories are just as thrilling, entertaining, and incredible as the latest big-budget blockbuster. What’s more, they’re all true too. But with a new found glut of them comes the ever more impossible choice, what’s worth your time? Below is my pick of the 50 best modern feature length documentaries.
I’ve defined modern as being from 2000 onwards, which means some of the greatest documentaries ever made will not feature here. I’m looking at you Hoop Dreams.
50. McConkey (2013)
d. Rob Bruce, Scott Gaffney, Murray Wais, Steve Winter, David Zieff
Shane McConkey was an extreme skier and Base jumper who lived life on the edge, and very much to the full.

Not all docu films that make the cut into the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Edit and Story Labs are fortunate enough to then land a coveted spot at the festival (recent examples include Roger Ross Williams’ God Loves Uganda and Tracy Draz Tragos and Andrew Droz Palermo’s Rich Hill) but some fresh air and supportive pounding from the Institute’s Advisors surely contributes to the realization of passion projects that are buckets filled in blood, sweat and tears. Among the press release mentions below, we’ll surely be discussing them in Park City setting in a January to too far off from now. Here are the selection of 20 Fellows representing eight documentary film projects to participate in the 2014 Documentary Edit and Story Labs, June 20-28 and July 4-12 at Sundance Resort in Sundance, Utah.

Thanks to the success of Savage Cinema in the 61st edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival, this new section launched in collaboration with Red Bull Media House is shaping up to be the international reference in the exhibition of adventure and action sports films.
Last year’s Savage Cinema saw the screening of six world or European film premieres , which had a huge public success thanks to their exciting and original images and stories. A top notch selection of works with feats from the snowboard, surf, ski or rock climbing worlds, thrilled film lovers and action sports aficionados alike.
A crucial factors in the incredible success of this new section is the support of the filmmakers, producers and athletes who presented their films and enjoyed the Festival atmosphere, turning the event into a meeting place between the universes of film, sports and adventure. World champions like David Lama (who climbed one of the edges of the Kursaal Centre) and Stephanie Gilmore (surfing), surfers such as Dave Rastovich and Chris del Moro, directors like Andrew Kidman, David Zieff, Murray Wais, Thomas Dirnhofer and Dave Mossop, or the producer Martha Mitchell were some of the professional guests who shared with us this first adventure.
Savage Cinema launches now its second edition with the goal of raising last years show to an even higher level in and outside the movie theaters. Films on subjects related to action sports, adventure and the outdoors, in any genre, produced in the last year and wishing to participate in the 62nd San Sebastian Festival can be submitted online until July 16.

David Zieff has over three decade of experience under his belt. He worked on the Oscar-winning documentary "The Cove" and been the supervising editor for "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster." He was also senior editor of Michael Moore’s Emmy-winning series "The Awful Truth" and TV Nation as well as numerous Comedy Central shows. In his latest work, "McConkey," he's worked with a group of co-directors who each chronologically entered the project at varying times which he credits as enhancing the layers of the story. What it's about: McConkey is about a free-skiing, base-jumping genius named Shane McConkey-- a guy who mainstream audiences likely never heard of but who is legendary to those who have, and who is completely worth getting to know. What you might think the film is about turns out to be a much deeper reflection on how you choose to live your life. What else should audiences know?...
