Welcome to The O.C., bitch!
Rachel Bilson reprised one of her most iconic roles as The O.C‘s Summer Roberts for three 21Seeds Tequila ads. For the spots, the actress also reunited with the Fox show’s creators, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who partnered up with the tequila brand to put together the nostalgic ads.
The ads kick off with the same shot as The O.C. intro, a pan of Orange County from the water as the song “California” by Phantom Planet plays.
In the first spot, Bilson’s in a kitchen, making cocktails with 21Seeds’ Valencia Orange tequila at a party. “Is that 21Seeds’ infused tequila?” a guest asks Bilson’s Summer. “Welcome to the V.O.C, bitch,” Bilson replies as the ad bleeps out the “bitch.” The line is meant to resemble what Luke (Chris Carmack) tells Ryan (Ben McKenzie) after they get...

Legally Blonde 2: Red, White And Blonde followed in 2004. A straight to DVD sequel, Legally Blondes, which Witherspoon produced, starring twins Milly and Becky Rosso, was released in 2009. Reese Witherspoon has bent and snapped her way into a full-fledged “Legally Blonde” empire.
After playing L.A. sorority girl turned Harvard Law School student — and arguably, feminist icon — Elle Woods in 2001, Witherspoon has led sequel “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde” and is slated to star in a third film written by Mindy Kaling and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” co-creator Dan Goor. Kaling previously teased that the third film will center on Elle Woods reevaluating both her career and her perspective on life at age 42, telling Time magazine that she would never want the character to “be canceled or become a Karen.”
While the status of that trilogy installment is still unknown, given that the feature was announced in 2022, Witherspoon has turned instead to building out the “Legally Blonde” brand through TV.
IndieWire can confirm that a “Legally Blonde” prequel series titled “Elle” is in the works at Prime Video, with Witherspoon producing.

Twenty years ago, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s breakout hit The O.C., about a group of teens coming of age in Newport Beach, premiered on Fox. By the time the 27-episode first season aired its finale in the spring of 2004, the show was the highest-rated drama on TV among adults 18 to 34 and had catapulted its stars — whose characters were affectionately known as the “Core Four” — to massive, near-overnight popularity.
It wouldn’t be the first or last young adult series in the U.S. to generate a cultural frenzy. But the industry ecosystem that birthed and defined zeitgeisty YA shows like it — 22-episode drama series with largely white casts found through in-person auditions — is vanishing. As viewers have increasingly abandoned broadcast and cable TV, the linear networks these shows called home (Fox, The WB, Upn, The CW, MTV and Freeform) have also faced mergers, acquisitions, multiple rebrands or given...

It’s been over two decades since Reese Witherspoon wowed us with her blonde beauty and brains in the first installment of the “Legally Blonde” franchise.
Due to the widely positive reception of the first movie, the sequel “Legally Blonde: Red, White and Blonde” followed in 2003.
This was later followed by the 2009 direct-to-video spinoff “Legally Blondes,” which served as sort of a pilot for a potential series, but this did not take.
"Legally Blonde 3” has been in the works for several years with Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor working on the script, but nothing has come of it until now.

Long before Greta Gerwig's pink pop cultural juggernaut Barbie came along, the fuchsia feminist revolution began with 2001's Legally Blonde. As blonde and brilliant SoCal socialite-turned-Harvard law student Elle Woods, Reese Witherspoon helped create a bona-fide cult classic and one of the 21st century's first great big screen heroines. Now, a couple of decades after 2003 sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, Witherspoon is gearing up to return to Elle Woods' world with her Hello Sunshine production company for several new Amazon spin-off series.
As reported by Deadline, Witherspoon — whose first Hello Sunshine/Amazon collaboration, Daisy Jones & The Six, debuted on Prime Video last year — is set to team up with Gossip Girl developers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage for the first project, which is furthest along in development. Schwartz and Savage are set to write the series, whose plot currently remains tightly under wraps, with Witherspoon taking on a producing role.

Bring your pink suit to the dry cleaners because Legally Blonde is making a comeback, and you’ll want to dress to impress! According to Deadline, Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine company will partner with Amazon MGM Studios for a Legally Blonde spinoff TV series. The long-anticipated project comes from Gossip Girl writers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who will also produce through their Fake Empire studio. Plot details remain a mystery, though Witherspoon’s involvement with the project gives me good vibes.
Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter will produce the Legally Blonde spinoff TV series via Hello Sunshine alongside Legally Blonde film producer Marc Platt. Deadline says there’s a chance we could get more than one spinoff series inspired by Legally Blonde, but details are fuzzier than the eraser toppers Elle Woods keeps in her purse.
Released in 2001, Legally Blonde stars Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a fashionable sorority queen whom her boyfriend dumps.

Only so many movie franchises have been successfully spun off into equally successful TV shows, but Amazon MGM is looking at that challenge and saying, “What, like it’s hard?”
The studio is in development on a “Legally Blonde” spinoff TV series inspired by the perfectly pink comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, who is also producing the series through her company Hello Sunshine, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
No plot details were unveiled, but the show is envisioned as an expansion of the “Legally Blonde” universe and characters, with Deadline reporting there may be more to come.
Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment on an update about whether a “Legally Blonde 3″ film is still in the works, which upon its last update was being written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor. That project has been in development for years, with Witherspoon even comparing...

Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) is taking over the world, just like we always knew she would. A Legally Blonde spinoff TV series is in the works at Amazon MGM Studios, according to Deadline. The series is being penned by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the two behind the one and only Gossip Girl. A second potential spinoff series is in the early stages as well. The more Legally Blonde, the merrier! Not much has been revealed about the spinoff, but we already have some ideas. From a casting that’s just perfect to how the series could incorporate other characters from the hit 2001 movie, scroll down to read us out about what we’d like to see in the spinoff. 1. Will Bruiser get his own show?
Amazon is teaming with Reese Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine banner to develop a Legally Blonde TV series. Gossip Girl and The O.C. grads Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are attached to write the TV offshoot, whose premise is being kept under wraps. (We don’t know if it’s about the dog, but here’s hoping!)
Schwartz and Savage and their Fake Empire banner, Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine’s Lauren Neustadter, Marc Platt and Amazon MGM Studios are all producing the potential offshoot.
It’s unclear if Witherspoon has any plans to reprise her role as Elle Woods in the potential TV series, which comes as Amazon has been scouring the MGM library to for titles to revive since acquiring the storied studio a few years ago. Just in time for Monday’s Emmy awards, the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and Dr. Stacy L. Smith, along with the the Adobe Foundation, have unveiled The Inclusion List for episodic programming, which recognizes the most inclusive series in broadcast, cable and streaming.
Following a similar effort for films, the list analyzes on-screen and behind-the-camera personnel from more than 500 programs to determine the 100 most inclusive broadcast and cable series from the 2021-22 broadcast season, as well as streaming series from 2021 to 2023. The project also recognizes 20 producers responsible for the most inclusive content.
“The goal of the Inclusion List is to recognize the stories and storytellers who are taking inclusion seriously and whose content reflects their values,” said Dr. Smith, founder of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. “With today’s release of the Inclusion List for broadcast/cable and streaming series, we are excited to acknowledge the creative voices championing inclusion across the spectrum of episodic content.

When Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage launched The O.C. in 2003, it would change TV — and teen dramas — forever.
It’s a winding journey that the duo captured with the help of Alan Sepinwall, Rolling Stone’s chief TV critic, in Welcome to The O.C.: The Oral History. Across 11 chapters — and a prologue that teases the wild ride — the trio, along with the cast, writers, crew members, producers, journalists, fans and studio and network executives, trace the show from its early origins to its very last days on set, and beyond.
Not only would the show bring Savage and Schwartz together in what has become one of TV’s most fruitful partnerships with Fake Empire Productions, but it would go on to inspire a library of young adult shows, from Gossip Girl (and its reboot) and The Carrie Diaries to Marvel’s Runaways and Looking for Alaska; multiple reality...

In Alan Sepinwall’s Welcome to The O.C.: An Oral History, which he co-authors with show creator Josh Schwartz and executive producer Stephanie Savage, fans of the hit series — the epitome of a cultural reset — are taken right back where we started from.
The more than 350-page dive into one of TV’s biggest series captures in detail how the teen drama from the then-youngest showrunner to helm a network drama created a TV revolution before becoming a target of critics. No stone goes uncovered here, from the pitch and iconic pilot, all the way through that legendary soundtrack, memorable guest stars, rapidly shifting plotlines, on- and offscreen dramas, and the memes that followed.
With insights from creator Schwartz, producer Savage, the entire main cast (including Mischa Barton, Adam Brody, Rachel Bilson and Benjamin McKenzie), notable guest and recurring stars, Fox and Warner Bros. Television execs and more...

“Welcome to The O.C., bitch!”
With those five immortal words, a cultural phenomenon was born.
The brainchild of a then-25-year-old Josh Schwartz, and guided by the steady hand of his producing partner Stephanie Savage, The O.C. ran for four chaotic seasons on Fox before sailing off into the sunset (or, in the case of poor Marissa Cooper, crashing in a fiery wreck).
A fish-out-of-water tale about Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie), a troubled kid from Chino who’s adopted by Sandy (Peter Gallagher), Kirsten (Kelly Rowan), and Seth Cohen (Adam Brody...

Earlier this month, actor Ed Westwick — most famous for portraying the Donald Trump Jr.-esque real estate scion Chuck Bass on Gossip Girl — went live on TikTok and revealed to his followers that he’s keen to do a Gossip Girl “reboot” with the original cast, or a “spinoff show.”
The allegations notwithstanding, Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage tell Rolling Stone that fans shouldn’t get their hopes up about a reboot with the original cast anytime soon.
In an interview to promote the upcoming book Welcome to the O.

This piece originally ran on November 25, 2019. It's been updated for this year's holiday.
Long before Gossip Girl went off the rails and tried to tell us that Dan was Gossip Girl all along, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage's teen drama served up a Thanksgiving episode stuffed with melodrama, family fights, and flashbacks to the previous year's celebrations. In the episode, the omniscient Gossip Girl voiced by Kristen Bell has taken the holiday off, but this doesn't mean the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite are any less interesting. Even without the signature gossip blasts lighting up every flip phone and Sidekick, the juicy bombshells keep dropping.

The creators of The Oc are speaking out about their controversial decision to kill off Mischa Barton's Marissa Cooper.
Barton was written out of the Fox teen soap at the close of its third season, forever changing the series and possibly paving the way for its cancellation one season later.
Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage opened up to Vanity Fair about the decision in an interview promoting their new book, Welcome to the O.C.: The Oral History.
Marissa was killed off when Volchok drove Ryan's car off the road, leading to one of the defining moments of the series.
“It’s something that we regret, and looking back on it, we wish we could have come up with a different solution,” Schwartz says to the outlet.
“We didn’t see an alternative path at the time, which is why we went down that road," he elaborated.
"But obviously in hindsight,...

The creators of The O.C. knew right away that they’d made a mistake in terminating Mischa Barton’s character, Marissa, they say in a new interview.
Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, executive producers of the early 2000s Fox drama, recently spoke with Vanity Fair to promote their new book, Welcome to the O.C.: The Oral History, written with Rolling Stone’s Alan Sepinwall. Apple TV+ has extinguished City on Fire.
According to Deadline, the crime drama has been canceled after just one season.
The decision comes six weeks after the conclusion of City on Fire Season 1.
The series failed to garner much buzz, a surefire sign that a show is not long for this world.
We rarely get viewership statistics for streaming shows, so the buzz is the only indicator of success to observers.
City on Fire was saddled with terrible reviews from critics, with a 39% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Fans were considerably more positive, with an audience score of 78%.
Apple TV+ recently launched Silo, which became the most-watched drama, achieving considerable buzz and acclaim.
Hijack also seems ripe for success after breaking through in ways many shows haven't.

The Apple TV+ crime drama “City on Fire,” which wrapped up its 8-episode first season two months ago, will not be getting a second season, TheWrap has confirmed.
Based on the novel of the same name by Garth Risk Hallberg, “City on Fire” wasn’t listed as a limited series. But the story shown in Season 1 covered the entire book, which means viewers won’t be stuck with a never-resolved cliffhanger similar to Hulu’s 2020 “High Fidelity” adaptation.
Set in 2003, the story follows the aftermath of the shooting of a young student in Central Park, New York city. The investigation uncovers ties to a series of fires, the Manhattan music scene, and a secretive and wealthy real estate family.
Created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the show was executive produced by Schwartz and Savage alongside Lis Rowinski and Jesse Peretz.

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has opted not to pick up a second season of crime drama series City on Fire. The news comes a month and a half after Season 1 finished its eight-episode run on the streamer. It is not surprising as the adaptation of the novel of the same name didn’t get a lot of buzz the way other recent Apple TV+ entries like Silo and Hijack have.
