China’s video streamers, much like their counterparts in the west, have passed their peak growth phase and have been forced to refocus their efforts on achieving profitability. In the case of IQiyi, which is a subsidiary of tech giant Baidu but has its own stock market listing on the Nasdaq, that transition has meant reduced content spending and a more rigorous approach to quality and investment in winning shows.
"To the Wonder,” which debuted on Sunday in competition at Canneseries, is a product of that less-is-more approach. It follows the appearance of IQiyi’s crime drama “Why Try to Change Me Now” in the 2023 Berlin Series lineup.
The eight-part “To the Wonder,” which shares a title with the 2012 fantasy film by Terrence Malick but has no connection to it, is a big-budget heart-warmer that stars Ma Yili (“The First Half of My Life”), Zhou Yiran (“Across the Furious Sea”) and Yu Shi.

CBS has given a straight to series order to a drama series that will see Morris Chestnut star as the iconic literary character Dr. John Watson, the companion of master detective Sherlock Holmes.
The show, titled “Watson,” is a contemporary story set one year after the death of Holmes at the hands of his archnemesis Moriarty. Per the official logline, the show will see “Dr. John Watson (Chestnut) resume his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders. Watson’s old life isn’t done with him, though—Moriarty and Watson are set to write their own chapter of a story that has fascinated audiences for more than a century.”
Craig Sweeny created the series and will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Chestnut will executive produce in addition to starring. Shäron Moalem MD, PhD, and Aaron Kaplan and Brian Morewitz for Kapital Entertainment also executive produce.

The cancellation of “Nancy Drew” came as a shock to its producers.
On Thursday, a day after the show’s series finale aired, executive producer Larry Teng took to Twitter to call out network The CW over how the cancellation was handled.

“From what I’ve read, the reaction to the series finale have been mostly positive,” Teng wrote. “Now imagine if you watched that finale without us knowing it would be the last episode of #NancyDrew ever. Because that’s what almost happened.”
He went on to explain that star Kennedy McMann was preparing to shoot ‘The Good Doctor” spin-off “The Good Lawyer”, which premiered in March.
The studio, Teng said, had hoped to find a way for McMann to fit both shows into her schedule and reached out to an exec...

The CW’s “Nancy Drew” aired its final episode on Wednesday, following last year’s news that Season 4 of the detective series would be its last. At the time, showrunners Noga Landau and Melinda Hsu Taylor said they were “full of gratitude, knowing that we were able to bring this chapter to a close with intentionality,” but executive producer Larry Teng is telling a different story.
On X, formerly known as Twitter, the EP said The CW did not tell the “Nancy Drew” team that the network planned to cancel the show until a “random call 3/4 into our season.” According to Teng, “Nancy Drew” star Kennedy McMann “was in line to shoot ‘The Good Lawyer,'” so her agent called CBS Studios (a production company behind “Nancy Drew”) to ask about scheduling in regards to “Nancy Drew” Season 5. CBS then apparently made a call to The CW “right around the...

"Nancy Drew”– which was canceled in October after four seasons — aired its series finale this week. One of the show’s producers shared some choice words for CW management about the way the cancellation was handled.
While acknowledging that the reaction to the mystery drama’s finale has been “mostly positive,” Larry Teng blasted the network for not giving the production team enough of a heads up about the show ending to craft a proper conclusion for the fans.
“Imagine if you watched that finale without us knowing it would be the last episode of #NancyDrew ever. Because that’s what almost happened,” he wrote on X Thursday. “Kennedy was in line to shoot [ABC pilot] ‘The Good Lawyer.’ And like any good agent would do, Kennedy’s rep asked our Studio what our future schedule for ‘Nancy Drew’ was going to look like. Our Studio wanted to try and make it...

There isn’t any mystery as to how a producer of Nancy Drew feels about the show being axed.
While fans have known The CW series was ending since last October, the creative team apparently wasn’t given enough heads up during the production process by The CW’s new management to craft a more proper ending for the show.
Executive producer Larry Teng took to X (formerly known as Twitter) late Thursday to express his frustration after the mystery drama’s fourth and final season aired its finale this week.
“From what I’ve read, the reaction to the series finale have been mostly positive,” he wrote. “Now imagine if you watched that finale without us knowing it would be the last episode of #NancyDrew ever. Because that’s what almost happened.”

When news broke in October 2022 that Nancy Drew had been canceled after four seasons, it was news to the cast and EPs.
With four episodes still to film at the time, producers had to scramble to craft a series finale worthy of the show.
After the last episode airing on The CW, producer Larry Teng opened up about how the gang learned the show would not be renewed.
Kennedy McMann had already plotted her next role as the lead of The Good Doctor spinoff, but there was hope she could pull double duty.
"Now imagine if you watched that finale without us knowing it would be the last episode of #NancyDrew ever," Teng wrote on X.

Larry Teng, one of the executive producers of The CW‘s Nancy Drew, has slammed the network brass for the “disrespectful” way they canceled the mystery drama series. Nancy Drew aired its series finale on Wednesday, August 23, wrapping up four seasons of the Kennedy McMann-starring drama. Fans had high praise for the finale and how it tied up loose ends, but, according to Teng, that almost didn’t happen. Taking to Twitter/X on Thursday, August 24, Teng explained how it was only due to a chance phone call that the Nancy Drew team found out the show wasn’t getting picked up for a fifth season. If this didn’t happen, Teng said they would have filmed the Season 4 finale, having no idea it would be their last episode. So… this could be long. From what I’ve read, the reaction to the series finale have been mostly positive.
