The Toronto Film Festival just revealed the movies they’ll feature this fall, and it looks like cinephiles are in for a real treat! TIFF runs September 5-15, 2024 and will include world premieres, international debuts, and more.
Some major Gala presentations with red carpet premieres include music docs on Andrea Bocelli and Bruce Springsteen, plus new films starring Jennifer Lopez, Steve Coogan, and reunions for Ralph Fiennes/Juliette Binoche and Angelina Jolie with Salma Hayek.
The Special Presentations section also has buzzy world premieres such as Mike Leigh’s new drama, thrillers with Riz Ahmed and Lily James, and a film pairing Pamela Anderson with Jamie Lee Curtis.
But it’s not just debuts – TIFF will also give big screens to movies that wowed at Cannes and elsewhere from directors like Paul Schrader, David Cronenberg, and Sean Baker.
Ben Stiller’s comedy kicks things off while Rebel Wilson closes it out with a musical.

The Toronto International Film Festival is bringing back the star power after last year’s Hollywood labor strikes led to a drought of household names at the annual gathering.
Projects from Pamela Anderson, Jennifer Lopez, Riz Ahmed, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and more will see world premieres in Toronto come September, as well as key awards contenders like Edward Berger’s “Conclave” and Sean Baker’s “Anora.”
In the special presentations section, Gia Coppola will deliver her anticipated drama “The Last Showgirl” starring Anderson. The “Baywatch” star plays a dancer who, after her long-running Las Vegas revue is abruptly canceled, is forced to reconcile with her failures and find a path forward. The film screened as a work-in-progress for potential buyers in Cannes this May, and will no doubt be one of the highest-profile sales titles at the market surrounding TIFF this year.

A total of 36 individuals earned their first Primetime Emmy acting nominations in 2024, including “Feud” stars Naomi Watts and Tom Hollander and recent Oscar also-rans Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Ryan Gosling (“Saturday Night Live”). A standout among these newbies is Paul Rudd, who is the only one in the group with shots at two performance wins: Best Comedy Supporting Actor (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Best Narrator (“Secrets of the Octopus”).
Rudd could now make Emmys history as the eighth doubly-nominated first-timer to triumph on at least one of his bids. The first to do so was Robert Cummings, who simultaneously won for “12 Angry Men” and lost for “My Hero” in 1955. He was followed by Jack Albertson, Eileen Brennan, Jane Lynch, Riz Ahmed, Ann Dowd, and Ali Wong.

I’ve known the name of Yann Demange ever since I watched ’71, the fantastic 2014 British thriller focusing on the riots in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The film took time to grow on me, and a decade later, I can say it’s one of my most favorite films ever. However, despite my familiarity with his work, I had zero idea about Demange’s Algerian heritage and his life outside his work. In his latest, Dammi, we get a slice of that. Demange’s film may just be clocking in at eighteen minutes, but it still packs a lot of punch. In this article, we’re going to look into what happens in this short film before forming some thoughts on it.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens in the Short?
There’s barely any narrative in Dammi. I mean, it does have a beginning and ending that appear to be cohesive, but whatever...

The Sound of Metal star plays a character based on writer and director Yann Demange, who travels to Paris to reconnect with his Arab roots
Sometimes the smallest projects are the most interesting. That may well be the case for Riz Ahmed’s newest film: a 16-minute short called Dammi, directed by Yann Demange, of Top Boy and ’71 renown, which is receiving an unusually high-profile release on the streaming platform Mubi.
Partly it is because Ahmed is now a bona fide Hollywood figure after films such as Sound of Metal, Nimona and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – having cut his teeth in indie British cinema, with credits including Shifty, Four Lions and Trishna. But Ahmed is also something of a overachiever with short films; along with director Aneil Karia, he won an Oscar for The Long Goodbye, a hard-hitting short about a British Asian family brutalised by neo-Nazi paramilitaries,...

Fingernails, the sophomore feature from Christos Nikou, starring Jessie Buckley, Riz Ahmed, Jeremy Allen White and Annie Murphy, closed the 58th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Saturday evening.
Nikou, the Athens-born director of Apples, used a stage appearance during the closing ceremony ahead of the screening of his sci-fi relationship drama and English-language debut, to express his support for longer cinema runs for movies in the streaming age.
The filmmaker shared that Kviff artistic director Karel Och was so interested in the title that he flew to London to see a screening of it just to fly back to the Czech Republic at 6 a.m. the next morning, which impressed him and others. “I think that was a reason why we convinced Apple TV+ that distributes the film to have this film here today after the movie [debuted] on the platform,” Nikou said. “Because the movie has...

Gareth Edwards' 2016 nostalgia-fest "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" seems to have been made to address what some people call a plot hole in George Lucas' 1977 film "Star Wars." In Lucas' film, the young Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) pilots a light attack craft up to a miniature hole in the exterior of the moon-sized Death Star, drops a bomb in it, and causes the entire superstructure to blow up. It is a satisfying ending to an exhilarating sci-fi pulp adventure.
Starwoids, however, watched Lucas films enough times that they began to ask questions. Why, the query went, would the deathly efficient Empire build a moon-sized planet-killing machine with such a grievous design flaw? Why build something so large and overpowered if a single bomb from a light attack craft can destroy it entirely?
The makers of "Rogue One" took that criticism to heart, and backward-engineered a story to explain the flaw.

In her 2022 Toronto curtain raiser “The Swimmers,” telling the true story of two Syrian sisters and their emotional and gruelling journey to Europe to escape the civil war, director Sally El-Hossaini went to great lengths to ensure authenticity, using real-life refugees both in-front of and behind the camera.
For Counterpoints Arts, the U.K. charity that focusses on culture and migration, “The Swimmers” offered a great example of how projects involving refugees and migrants could — and should — be developed. As the organization’s co-founder and director Almir Koldzic explains to Variety, El-Hossaini made sure that “people with lived experiences were represented on every level of production and were respected in that process.”
Since it launched in 2012, Counterpoints has worked alongside the U.K. arts scene as part of its efforts to “inspire social change and enhance inclusion and cultural integration,” putting on numerous film screenings concerning the subject, many during the annual Refugee Week,...

The film, screening in the Proxima competition section of the 58th edition of Kviff in the scenic Czech spa town, sees Verseau navigating uncertainty amplified by her friend Meril’s death, as well as discussing challenges faced by trans women.
Now, the trailer for the film has made its debut. “‘Never be yourself.’ That’s what the told us,” one friend says to Verseau in one of the scenes featured in the trailer. “It is a fact that Meril killed herself,” Verseau shares in another emotional clip from the movie. “And I have to digest it.”

“Fingernails,” starring Jesse Buckley, Riz Ahmed and Jeremy Allen White, is to close the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The tender and idiosyncratic romantic drama, co-produced by Cate Blanchett, is the sophomore outing from director Christos Nikou, who made a splash with his debut “Apples.”
The film centers on the Love Institute, a scientific organization that tests the mutual compatibility of people who have decided to embark on life’s journey together. It is here of all places that the incurable romantic Anna finds a job, temporarily mentored by the thoughtful and sympathetic Amir.
“After being in the jury of Karlovy Vary Film Festival in 2021 and having the chance to present my first feature ‘Apples’ to the Czech audience, I am so excited and grateful to return to a festival and a city that feel like home. Christos Nikou’s sophomore feature Fingernails, starring Riz Ahmed and Jessie Buckley, will screen as the closing film for the 58th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) in early July.
Organizers of the film fest in the picturesque Czech spa town unveiled the news Wednesday. “The tender and idiosyncratic romance co-produced by Cate Blanchett” features “disarming performances by Jesse Buckley and Riz Ahmed,” fest organizers said, describing the movie as an “unusual romance.”
The movie, Nikou’s English-language debut, is about a new technology that has been embraced by a growing number of couples. Promising “no more uncertainty” and “no more divorce,” the simple but physically daunting test enables people to be sure they have indeed found a true love connection – the only requirement: the removal of one fingernail from each person.
“There will be blood, yes, but mainly there’s a well-written and beautifully performed investigation...

Riz Ahmed is returning to television — both in front of and behind the camera.
Amazon’s Prime Video has ordered a comedy series created by and starring Ahmed. The Oscar winner will play a struggling actor named Shah Latif, who’s on the cusp of landing a breakthrough role when he finds himself thrust into a full-blown existential crisis and trippy conspiracy thriller all at the same time.
The Daily Show and Modern Family alum Ben Karlin will serve as co-showrunner alongside Ahmed for the currently untitled, eight-episode series. Jax Media and Amazon MGM Studios, where Ahmed’s Left Handed banner has a first-look deal, are producing.
“I’ve wanted to tell this story for a long time,” Ahmed said in a statement. “It’s personal, bold and a lot of fun. It feels so good to be writing and creating it now with this incredible team.”

Cinematic auteur, icon of pastel aesthetic, and pen salesman Wes Anderson enjoys a varied repertoire. He’s made commercials, worked in live-action film and animation, long-form and short, and has been known to don multiple hats on each set. While most of his work is original, he has also adapted the work of author Roald Dahl with “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and, most recently, his Oscar-winning “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.” Taking part in a conversation at the Annecy International Animation Festival in France, reported on by The Hollywood Reporter, Anderson said he’s now ready to take on another huge British novelist.
“I feel like the writer who I would like to adapt — who I don’t know if I can see the opportunity — is Dickens,” he said. “I would like to do a big Dickens story. They’ve all been adapted. They’ve all been done many times.

Before “Iron Man” and “Thor,” before “Spider-Man” and “X-Men,” there was “Blade.” Starring Wesley Snipes as the titular daywalking half-vampire vampire slayer, the movie debuted in 1998 at a time when Marvel comics had yet to enjoy a successful feature film adaptation. The New Line Cinema production was enough of a hit — grossing $131.2 million worldwide — that Snipes returned for two sequels, establishing the company’s first ever bona fide movie franchise. Had “Blade” bombed, the Marvel Cinematic Universe may never have happened.
So when Marvel Studios announced in 2019 that two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali was going to bring the character to the MCU, it seemed like a total no brainer.
Five years later, however, “Blade” has weathered the Covid-19 pandemic and two major guild strikes, faced three release date changes, lost two directors, and hired at least a half dozen screenwriters in what could be the most protracted development process...

When the 2023 Primetime Emmy nominations were revealed, Ali Wong and Pedro Pascal both had the honor of being included in multiple performance lineups. She made history as the first newcomer to the acting categories recognized for both live action (“Beef”) and voice (“Tuca & Bertie”) work, while he became the first actor nominated for three programs on his initial Emmy outing. These achievements made them the newest members of a group of 26 people who earned their first two (or three) acting Emmy nominations in a single year.
Wong’s eventual Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress win for “Beef” made her the seventh person in this bunch to succeed on one of her bids. The first was Robert Cummings, who received 1955’s Best Single Performance by an Actor prize for “Twelve Angry Men” and simultaneously lost for his regular lead turn on “My Hero.”

Wes Anderson has reportedly put together another impressive ensemble of actors for his next feature-length film. Entitled The Phoenician Scheme, it’s described as father-daughter espionage tale with a darker tone than some of Anderson’s previous works.
As previously reported Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera, Bill Murray, and Mia Threapleton will have starring roles in the film. Now, per the German industry website Crew-United, other cast members include Charlotte Gainsbourg, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Tom Hanks, Riz Ahmed, Bryan Cranston, Rupert Friend, and Antonia Desplat.
The Phoenician Scheme recently wrapped filming in Germany and is presumably targeting a 2025 release. It’ll mark Anderson’s follow-up to 2023’s Asteroid City.
Earlier this year, Anderson won his first-ever Academy Award for the Roald Dahl short film, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

Michael K. Williams’ legacy is living on thanks to new animated short film, “The Brown Dog.”
Williams, who died in 2021 of a drug overdose, lent his voice to the short which was commissioned by WeTransfer’s Academy Award-winning arts platform WePresent. Williams’ “Boardwalk Empire” co-star Steve Buscemi executive produced the film and also starred in the animated work.
“The Brown Dog” follows Nobody (Williams), a night-shift security guard for an upscale apartment complex. As Nobody works his shift, his feelings of isolation spark an existential crisis, and he later goes in search of a mysterious brown dog as his own mind seems to slip from him.
In a press statement, co-directors Nadia Hallgren (“Becoming”) and Jamie-James Medina deemed the film a “celebration of Mr. Williams and the deep truth he brought to every character he inhabited — only his voice could speak so quietly but profoundly to the experiences of those...

Reports that Wes Anderson was aiming for a scaled-back cast for espionage thriller The Phoenician Scheme may well have been off the mark.
When reports first surfaced that Wes Anderson’s next film would be an espionage thriller, minds were left agog pondering what he was actually up to. After all, Anderson used the iconography of 1950s sci-fi films to unveil something far more intricate with 2023’s Asteroid City, so who knows what Anderson’s good old spy movie could secretly be a Trojan horse for?
One early report we did hear suggested that for this film, Wes Anderson would be scaling back his cast and not working in the same ensemble-driven way that he so often does. That report now looks like it could have been wide of the mark (or perhaps things simply evolved) as the full cast list for the film has now been released and well,...

Before Wes Anderson skipped this year’s Oscars to film “The Phoenician Scheme” in Germany, fans already knew which actors would be at the heart of the director’s latest ensemble. Benecio del Toro and Mia Threapleton star as a father and daughter whose family business leads them into a dark espionage tale, with Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, and Anderson regular Bill Murray also starring.

Newly minted Oscar winner Wes Anderson has now wrapped production on his next feature, The Phoenician Scheme, in Germany. We’ve known the story of a family and a family business, specifically capturing a father-daughter relationship in a dark espionage tale, has a cast that features Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera, Bill Murray, Mia Threapleton, and Riz Ahmed. Now the full ensemble has been unveiled, featuring many familiar faces from the director’s cinematic universe.

Distributor La Vingt-Cinquième Heure has acquired the French rights to Egyptian-American director Dina Amer’s politically sensitive drama “You Resemble Me.” The film tells the story of Hasna Aït Boulahcen, who in 2015 was wrongly believed to be Europe’s first female suicide bomber.
The film is a deeply researched character study of the young Muslim woman, who became linked to the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris even though she didn’t participate in them. Aït Boulahcen died during an anti-terrorism raid alongside her cousin Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who was one of the ringleaders of the coordinated assaults that killed 130 people in the French capital, including 90 at the Bataclan theater.
In a strong show of support, revered French auteur Claire Denis (“High Life”) is boarding “You Resemble Me” as an executive producer. Denis will also participate in onstage conversations with Amer during the film’s French theatrical run this fall.

The X-Men are one step closer to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with their own movie.
Screenwriter Michael Lesslie (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”) is in talks with Marvel Studios to write the first “X-Men” movie since the mutant superhero franchise was acquired by Disney in its purchase of 21st Century Fox in 2019.
As with every Marvel Studios film, Kevin Feige will produce, but nothing else about the film has been set, including director or cast. Marvel has been slowly seeding the MCU with mutants over the past two years, including brief mentions in 2022’s “Ms. Marvel” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and appearances of the X-Men’s namesake and leader, Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), in an alternative universe in 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and of Beast (Kelsey Grammer) in the post-credits sequence of 2023’s “The Marvels.”
