Struggles with addiction and depression have come into the limelight since the Covid Pandemic. As they have, so too have the stories that often accompany these events. Director Nadine Crocker took her own struggles as inspiration for her film Continue. When shooting Continue, it was her debut feature. It now releases after her follow-up gig – Desperation Road – a Mel Gibson-starring action flick. Even with the long production schedule, she remains as committed as ever to her story.
When formulating Continue, Crocker wore a lot of hats. She served as the director, lead actress, producer, and writer for the film. She jokes “Sleep? What’s that?” when asked how she finds time for it all. “I think every person in the entertainment business knows – during production – you’re like a zombie person. You can’t wait to sleep and rest, but on the last day, you’re wondering how do I get that back?...

Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has some thoughts on who would be cast as the main characters if the film were to be rebooted today.
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to discuss the film 15 years after it originally came out, the filmmaker chimed in on who she’d want to play Edward Cullen and Bella Swan in a film today.
When asked if Jacob Elordi and Jenna Ortega would portray the two main characters, Hardwicke admitted, “Oh, that would be perfect,” she said, adding of Elordi, “I mean, he’s amazing. He probably would be Edward today.”
She explained that so many people come to mind when she thinks about who could be cast in the roles in the present day. Model Lewis Tan approached her recently and told her he went out for the role of Jacob Black, which eventually went to Taylor Lautner.

When filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke got the first draft of Twilight, she knew there was a problem. The script depicted Bella as a superstar athlete and ended with her in a chase with the FBI (on jet skis). “It had just gone out of control,” says Hardwicke. “I’m like, ‘No, no, no, that’s not what the book’s about. It’s about this incredible, impossible love and this yearning.”
Hardwicke wanted to ditch the script and get closer to the book by author Stephenie Meyer. Those instincts proved right. Fifteen years ago, on Nov. 21, 2008, Twilight became a surprise hit for low-key studio Summit Entertainment, grossing $408.4 million worldwide and instantly turning stars Kristen Stewart (Bella Swan) and Robert Pattinson (Edward Cullen) into global stars. It would spawn four sequels, with a TV reboot on the way.

Robert Pattinson needed a makeover to transform into Edward Cullen, according to “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke.
While appearing on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast to mark the 15th anniversary of the beloved 2008 film, Hardwicke recalled how studio Summit Entertainment was skeptical Pattinson could “look good” as the heartthrob character.
“When he came over to my house, he had black bangs for hair and was kind of out of shape because he was hanging out at the pub all the time,” Hardwicke said of first auditioning Pattinson. “I sent it to Summit and he went over to meet them. They called me back and go, ‘Do you think you can make this guy look good?'”
Hardwicke continued, “I said, ‘Yeah, I do. Did you see his cheekbones? We’re doing a makeover on the hair and everything and he’s going to start working out and he’s going to be gorgeous.

Robert Pattinson is known as a heartthrob in Hollywood following his shot to stardom after starring in the Twilight saga. However, the film’s director Catherine Hardwicke is now revealing that the studio behind the franchise was not always Team Pattinson for the role of Edward and expressed concern over his looks during the casting process.
“When he came over to my house, he had black bangs for hair and was kind of out of shape because he was hanging out at the pub all the time,” Hardwicke said during an interview on the Watchalong podcast. “I thought ‘it works not just in person, but it works on screen.’ I had to be sure. Of course, in person, I just got carried away, but you have to be sure — does it really translate [to the screen]?”

Hardluck single mother blows into a small town just as an ex-con returns there, and many thinly drawn secondary characters kick off
Terminally unlucky, flat broke and unhoused, single parent Maben (Wila Fitzgerald) wafts like a tumbleweed into a small Mississippi town with her seven-year-old daughter Annalee (Pyper Braun). Why she is chosen to come to this particular podunk municipality isn’t clear at first, but by and by we learn that Maben has a connection to the place. However, her return is far from joyful considering once she’s checked herself and Annalee into a seedy motel and put the little one to bed, she makes a half-hearted attempt to turn a trick in the car park which goes horrifically wrong when a local sheriff (Shiloh Fernandez), arrests her, rapes her, and then calls his buddies to come over and have a turn. Desperation often leads to violence when someone’s back is against the wall. Humans are animals, and when cornered, they’ll lash out, throwing caution to the win as part of a fight or flight response. In Lionsgate‘s Desperation Road trailer, a mother protects herself against a corrupted officer of the law, leading to gunfire, bewilderment, and a snap decision to flee the scene. Mistakes can catch up to the best of us, and secrets unravel easily when the past comes back to haunt you.
“In a small Mississippi town, justice and the law are two very different things,” reads the official synopsis for Desperation Road. “Academy Award Winner Mel Gibson, Garret Hedlund, and Willa Fitzgerald star in a modern noir thriller based on the acclaimed novel by Michael Farris Smith about two lost souls tortured by the mistakes of their past and bound by a secret that keeps them running.

What if a film has a story whose tropes are very well known and its execution initially gives you hope that it will go somewhere in a totally new direction but ultimately doesn’t? The new film Mob Land, written and directed by Nicholas Maggio, suffers from its own genre conventions. The setting, the atmosphere, the thick accents, and the needle drops—all of them are unable to make the film fly. On the contrary, they, after a point, start to strangle the little life this film seems to have.
There is nothing that is out and out ‘bad’ about Mob Land, and yet one starts to beg the question, Why make this particular film now? The answer to that question is what should have illuminated each and every frame of the film, but Mob Land feels tired and dull right from its first frame. There is a kind of...

The new movie Mob Land, directed by Nicholas Maggio, is a crime drama that boasts of being a gritty piece of cinema but is actually a long-drawn cliche, with only a few moments that actually feel alive. Crime dramas are usually an engaging affair, but Mob Land proves that if a certain style or a stereotypical mood is given priority against the flow of the story, it will seldom work. The story revolves around Shelby Conners, who, after losing his job, agrees to his brother-in-law’s plan to rob a clinic dealing in drug money. The heist goes bad, and a hitman gets on their tail.
The characters in Mob Land are part of a philosophical debate about whether life in a small town is more meaningful or if the roller coaster ride of the big cities is the pathway to a purposeful life. The answers are given to us after a long,...

Very much indebted to No Country for Old Men, punchy thriller brings damnation to smalltown Louisiana
Feature first-timer Nicholas Maggio makes an impression with this punchy crime thriller set in smalltown Louisiana. The director himself has cited Tarantino as an influence – though the borrowing is much more obviously from the Coens’ adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men, with the seen-it-all sheriff and the sinister lizard-eyed killer coming in from the big city and making gas station attendants feel very uncomfortable by quizzing them insolently about their private lives.
John Travolta plays Sheriff Davis, a guy nearing retirement and trying not to think about the bad news he’s just got from his doctor. He takes a kindly interest in Shelby (Shiloh Fernandez), a young mechanic who is married with a young daughter; he soups up muscle cars and makes a few much-needed dollars at street races.

Both the PG-13 theatrical version and the unrated cut are included, along with three featurettes: New Vision of Horror, Bringing Life to M3GAN, and Getting Hacked.

One thing is clear after watching “Mob Land”: Kevin Dillon will not be the man to end America’s opioid crisis. In fact, it’s possible that the prescription drug epidemic currently gutting this country will not end at the hands of any single “Entourage” cast member.
The man formerly known as Johnny Drama stars in the film as Trey, a reckless drifter whose lime green Japanese sports car raises plenty of eyebrows in his small Maga town. But despite his life of petty crime and general inability to get his act together, Trey has a few thoughts about the opioids that have begun circulating through his town at an alarming rate.
He sees his friends and neighbors struggling to make ends meet while the local strip mall pill mill rakes in six figures by feeding their addictions. Through some combination of altruism and greed, he convinces himself that...

Festivals past are populating a busy specialty market this weekend with films from Sundance and Venice. Sony Pictures Classics is giving Randall Park’s Shortcomings a substantial 400+ screen release. See Deadline review. Mubi is out with Passages in New York and LA – both premiered to critical acclaim in Park City.
There’s been some drama around the latter after the MPA gave the Ira Sachs film an Nc-17 rating, which Mubi “officially rejected.” The distributor/streamer/producer said it “remains committed to releasing Passages nationwide in its original version as the filmmaker intended, with our full backing, unrated and uncut.” Rates a 94% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Deadline review here.

Writer-director Nicholas Maggio may not have intended to be self-critical when, fairly early in his debut feature “Mob Land,” he has one character observe to another about their failing small Southern town, “This whole place has become a fucking cliché.” But the longer this slackly paced rural noir continues, the more that dialogue seems in retrospect like fair warning. Borrowing freely from “No Country for Old Men,” “Collateral” and maybe a dozen or so other superior films, Maggio has cobbled together a modestly diverting, effectively atmospheric but blatantly derivative crime drama sprinkled with a few joltingly nasty plot twists.
It helps a lot that the first-time feature filmmaker has cast just about every role with an actor fully committed to their part. Better still, some of the briefly glimpsed supporting players do their bit to ratchet up the suspense by conveying sweaty desperation, darkly comical fury, or both.

Nicholas Maggio’s feature directorial debut, Mob Land, is a crime thriller in which two men rashly decide to pull off a robbery, frantically blunder their way through the job, and then face the devastating consequences of their actions. Sadly, the film itself is made with the same sort of overexcited energy, and the end result is similarly messy.
Shelby (Shiloh Fernandez) is a simple family man trying to make an honest living in a dying Dixie town. Here, drug overdoses are so common that the locals share the news of someone’s death like they would the results of a bad football game: worthy of quick commiseration but not interrupting your day over. When Shelby finds himself in dire financial straits, his brother-in-law, Trey (Kevin Dillon), suggests that they turn their town’s curse into a blessing by robbing a nearby pill mill. "This ain't your world... you don't control this." Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for Mob Land, an action thriller crime film from filmmaker Nicholas Maggio. They're sending this one to theaters in August if anyone is interested in watching. "Some debts can't be repaid with money." A young father gets in over his head after a robbery goes wrong. The Tulsa King meets Hell or Highwater in this gritty and tense southern thriller starring Hollywood icon, John Travolta, as the Sheriff looking to stop things before it gets worse. A struggling family man robs a pill mill, but after the theft turns violent, he's hunted by both the police and the Dixieland mafia. Starring Shiloh Fernandez, Stephen Dorff, Ashley Benson, Emily Tremaine, Timothy V. Murphy, with Kevin Dillon and John Travolta as Sheriff Bodie Davis. This seems like it has some intense action and plenty of style, not...

The Evil Dead franchise is a horror classic that has stood the test of time. From the early days of Sam Raimi’s low-budget gore-fest to the more recent adaptations, the franchise has maintained a level of quality and consistency that is rarely found in the horror genre. With all the films in the franchise being something special in their own right, it’s time to rank them in order of greatness. So grab your boomstick and chainsaw, and let’s take a look at every film in the Evil Dead franchise and see which one reigns supreme.
1. Evil Dead 2 (1987)
What can be said about Evil Dead 2 that hasn’t already been said? This film is a masterpiece of horror-comedy, and it’s still just as effective today as it was when it first came out in 1987. Sam Raimi and team were firing on all cylinders here; they...

To credit Fede Álvarez’s Evil Dead as the motivating force behind “Revenge of the Remakes” wouldn’t be an audacious claim. By golden template standards for reanimating beloved horror franchises, it remains a remarkable exemplification alongside titans like Maniac oder The Blob. As an underworldly standalone feature, it’s one of the fiercest, scare-you-senseless releases since its April 2013 premiere. I still remember every howl, sunken gasp, and pure release of elation during my midnight showtime—”That’S How You Execute A Remake,” dominating lobby chatter and ride home discussions. From there, reactionary adventures into do-over culture solidified as the investigative analysis you’ve been reading on Bloody Disgusting month after month.
Were your feathers rustled after I dared suggest 2009’s Friday the 13th understands Jason Voorhees’ mythos and fanbase better than its initial trilogy? Strap in deadheads, because this is the one where I hail 2013’s Evil Dead as King.

Ashley Benson is a talented actor who’s appeared in several hit projects, including Pretty Little Liars. But shockingly, there was a time when Benson was told she was “too fat” for a role, despite being a size two.

Benson began her career as a child model in television commercials. Stars: Nicolas Cage, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Noah Le Gros, Kerry Knuppe, Shiloh Fernandez, Nick Searcy, Abraham Benrubi, Clint Howard | Written by Carl W. Lucas | Directed by Brett Donowho
Incredible as it may seem, this is Nicolas Cage’s first western, although he clearly enjoyed shooting it, because he’s already done another one (Butcher’s Crossing). Essentially a knock-off version of True Grit, The Old Way isn’t especially overwhelming in terms of plot and direction, but it’s eminently watchable all the same, thanks to strong onscreen chemistry between Cage and young co-star Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
The film begins with a prologue sequence, in which grizzled gun-for-hire Colton Briggs shoots and kills almost everyone during an attempted hanging, including the man he was supposed to be rescuing in the first place. Twenty years later, Briggs (now sadly sans moustache) has hung up his guns in favour of raising his young...

The Old Way is a Western directed by Brett Donowho, written by Carl W. Lucas starring Nicolas Cage.
Yes, Nicolas Cage will (probably) work with no breaks this year and already has premieres ahead such as Renfield (in which he will be Dracula with his usual mayhem). Meanwhile, we can see him here in a Western which although it might not go down in the History of Film, is decent enough as far as production and ambience.
And, also has an incomparable philosophical subject: Nicolas Cage wears a Stetson!

"Tell me the names of the men who did this." Saban Films + Lionsgate have revealed the official trailer for The Old Way, a western action thriller from a filmmaker named Brett Donowho (that can't be his real last name?). The marketing describes this as Nicolas Cage's first ever Western, which might just be true? Why not. An old gunslinger and his daughter must face the consequences of his past, when the son of a man he murdered years ago arrives to take his revenge. Another typical Western story involving a man with a past who must fight off those who came after him when they find him. Sounds like so many other films. Starring Nicolas Cage and Ryan Kiera Armstrong, with Noah Le Gros, Clint Howard, Kerry Knuppe, plus Nick Searcy & Shiloh Fernandez. This doesn't look so bad, doesn't look so good either. At least Cage has a glorious mustache!

The original at least reflected its era but this updated story of a woman targeted for sexual assault by a couple of drifters is a nasty pulpy mess
This leaves an unpleasant taste in the mouth. It’s a remake of the psychosexual home invasion thriller Private Property, which starred Warren Oates – a cult classic that was out of circulation for decades after its release in 1960. Depressingly, the new version seems to preserve its deeply misogynistic 1960s attitudes towards women. It’s a nasty pulpy film, in which the big question for the plot is whether a young woman is going be violently sexually assaulted and murdered at the end. Will-she-or-won’t-she? It’s a grim watch.
That woman is Kathryn (a woodenly pouty performance by Ashley Benson). She’s an aspiring actor married to a successful movie producer. While he’s at work, Kathryn spends her days cleaning their...

Last month, the developers of Evil Dead: The Game announced that the character Mia Allen, who was played by Jane Levy in the 2013 Evil Dead, will be added to the game as a playable character on September 8th. A week later, it was announced that Mia’s brother David Allen, who was played by Shiloh Fernandez, is also being added to the game on September 8th. There’s a photograph of slinky sexagenarian superstar Harper Dutch (Katey Sagal) posing beside thirtysomething star of the moment Caleb Crawford (Shiloh Fernandez) in a frame in his Nashville apartment. Why is it there? He could want to show it off to boost his career, but he seems uncomfortable when ambitious young musician Jordan (Abby Quinn) finds it whilst wandering around the place after their one night stand. Perhaps he keeps it simply as a warning to himself. At a glance, Harper’s pose is casual, but anyone who has spent time with women like her can see that she’s capable of eating him alive.
There are not, of course, very many women like her. She used to be one half of the Dutchess Sisters, whom we see in the prologue being named Best New Artists, back in 1993. Now Hope is dead – they say she killed herself in front of Harper.
