Baby Reindeer creator and star Richard Gadd isn’t named as a defendant in Fiona Harvey’s $170 million defamation suit against Netflix over the hit black comedy, but he sure as Hell is backing the streamer in getting the action tossed out.
“I am a comedian, writer, and actor. I created, wrote, and starred in the Netflix series Baby Reindeer (the ‘Series’),” states Gadd in a July 28 declaration submitted in federal court today in response to the lawsuit by real-life stalker who was partially the inspiration for the series’ scary Martha Scott. “I have personal knowledge of the facts set forth below and, if called as a witness, could and would testify competently thereto. I submit this declaration in support of defendants Netflix, Inc., and Netflix Worldwide Entertainment, LLC’s special motion to strike.”

Season 33 of Dancing with the Stars is still two months away, but that hasn’t stopped speculation about who might be lacing up their dancing shoes in hopes of taking home the Len Goodman Mirror Ball Trophy.
This isn’t exactly a new thing, as speculation for the new season seems to begin as soon as the previous season ends.
And usually, by this time of the year, we have a better idea of who at least a few of the contestants will be.
For example, last year, we knew as early as April that Ariana Madix would be competing, and it wasn’t too long after that that we learned who her partner would be.
This season, all we know for sure is that Derek Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli will be back as judges.
We also know Alfonso Ribiero and Julianne Hough will return to host together.

In 2023, ABC brought in senior citizen Gerry Turner to headline the first season of The Golden Bachelor. Fans immediately took to the Indiana native, praising him as wholesome and genuine. But a year later, he may have to join a popular reality competition to fix his reputation. What happened?
Gerry Turner Was Too Good To Be True?
Bachelor Nation fans first heard rumblings of a Bachelor spinoff featuring the older generation in 2020. But it took three years before the project made it to television, thanks in part to the coronavirus pandemic.
The network chose Gerry Turner out of thousands of applicants. Then 71, he was characterized as a successful businessman who retired early and was looking for love again after tragically losing his high school sweetheart wife in 2017.

For Fiona Harvey, the woman who claims to be the inspiration for Baby Reindeer’s stalker character, the Netflix series’ impressive Emmy recognition is a “slap in the face.” Baby Reindeer earned 11 nominations for the 2024 Emmy Awards — including an Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series nomination and nods for creator-star Richard Gadd and costars Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau, and Tom Goodman-Hill. But Richard Roth, Harvey’s lawyer, told the Daily Mail that the nominations were the latest “slap in the face” for Harvey — who “suffered a life-changing tragedy” due to Baby Reindeer’s “brutal lies,” he added. “There was some suggestion that the series shouldn’t have been nominated for Emmys because of this ongoing issue,” Roth said. “The Netflix claim that Baby Reindeer is a true story is clearly false.” Now Harvey is living in fear, Roth said. “She’s afraid to go out in case people shout at her in the street,...

Shōgun leads the pack with 25 Emmy nominations with The Bear close behind with 23 nominations.
We may have just left this year’s awards season behind but there’s another major awards ceremony looming in the near future. The Emmy nominations were announced last night and they reflect a great year of TV.
Shōgun, Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks’ ambitious epic based on James Clavell’s novel, received a whopping 25 nominations across all categories. With more seasons of the acclaimed series now planned, Shōgun qualified for the Outstanding Drama category instead of a Limited or Anthology Series.
Shōgun is up for Oustanding Drama Series and Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai are both nominated for Lead Actor and Actress respectively.
The Bear, which just aired its third season, is nominated for 23 Emmys across the board. Controversially, the series is up for Outstanding Comedy Series. The Bear has always toed the line between...

Netflix is back on top. The streamer slightly increased its Emmy nomination tally in 2024, leading all outlets with 107 — up four from last year’s 103, and taking over the top slot held by HBO/Max last year (which dropped from 127 to 91). And Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria was in a celebratory mood when Variety spoke with her on Wednesday morning.
Although Netflix has had bigger Emmy nomination years (its 160 in 2020 is still an all-time record), Bajaria said she was happy to see this year’s tally spread out across 35 different titles, including “The Crown” (with 18 noms), “Ripley” (13), “Baby Reindeer” (11), “3 Body Problem” (6) and “Beckham” (5).
“I’m feeling really proud of so much of the work our creative partners have done,” she said. “Today is really an acknowledgement and celebration of them and all of these incredible talented people and creators we work with. To me, the takeaway is also looking...

The 2024 Emmys nominations were announced Wednesday morning, with Paul Rudd and Ryan Gosling among the list of first-time nominees.
Rudd earned his first Emmy nod, for best supporting actor in a comedy, for his season three run on Only Murders in the Building. And Ryan Gosling, recognized with a best guest actor in a comedy series nod for hosting a memorable episode of Saturday Night Live, is also a first-time Emmy contender.
Two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts also received her first Emmy nomination for her role in Ryan Murphy’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. She’s nominated in the category of best actress in a limited or anthology series, competing alongside Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country), Brie Larson (Lessons in Chemistry), Juno Temple (Fargo) and Sofía Vergara (Griselda).

The nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced today. While it was a mostly predictable affair, the announcement still sprinkled in a few welcome surprises among the expected contenders. The FX/Hulu contingent had a remarkable showing with two series dominating the proceedings. The feudal Japan-set drama "Shōgun" fared better than any other series with 25 nominations, and acclaimed dramedy "The Bear" set a new record for a comedy series with 23 nods.
Netflix ended up with the most nominations of any studio with 107. Leading their roster was surprise hit "Baby Reindeer," which received 11 nominations, including acting nods for creator Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau, and Tom Goodman-Hill.
Several breakthroughs and firsts were celebrated, including Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Kali Reis (“True Detective”) becoming the first indigenous women to receive acting nominations. In its final season, FX’s “Reservation Dogs” scored its first Emmy nomination for Best Comedy Series. The show's star D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai also earned his first acting nod as did Selena Gomez for "Only Murders in the Building."
Other interesting stories coming out of the nomination announcement include the late Treat Williams receiving a posthumous nomination for "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans" and a surprise nod for Idris Elba as lead actor in a drama for “Hijack.” Elba edged out contenders like Cosmo Jarvis in “Shogun,” Colin Farrell in “Sugar,” and Nathan Fielder in “The Curse.”
The 76th Primetime Emmys airs September 15th on ABC, just eight months after the previous ceremony which was delayed due to the writers' and actors' strikes.

While it’s hard to believe that Dakota Fanning hasn’t previously been recognized by the TV Academy, having now been acting for 25 years, she did in fact earn her first Emmy nomination this morning, speaking with Deadline about her upcoming Paramount horror film Vicious, her upcoming Netflix murder mystery series The Perfect Couple, and her creative ambitions going forward.
Written and directed by Bryan Bertino, Vicious watches as a woman spends the night fighting for her existence as she slips down a rabbit hole contained inside a gift from a late-night visitor. Of her time working on the film, dated for release on August 8, 2025, Fanning said, “I absolutely loved that experience, and that was very different from anything I’ve done before. It was an insane experience in the best way. I loved it and really can’t wait to see it.”

Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria will be making a lot of pleasant phone calls today after the streamer landed 107 Emmy nominations across 35 different shows.
It’s not the streamer’s biggest nomination haul — that was 160 in 2020 — but it put it firmly in the lead with FX coming in a surprise second with 93 nominations, higher than HBO and Max.
There were sizeable hauls for British shows Baby Reindeer and The Crown, and Ripley, which it picked up after it had been produced, but Bajaria is most pleased about the diversity of its nominations.
Shows such as All The Light We Cannot See, Blue Eye Samurai, The Gentlemen, The Greatest Night In Pop, Griselda, Love on the Spectrum U.S., 3 Body Problem and The Upshaws were all recognized, highlighting its “breadth” of programming, according to Bajaria.

Nava Mau has said the Emmy nomination for her Baby Reindeer breakthrough is a victory for the transgender acting community.
Mau played Teri in the hit Netflix series and becomes the first trans woman in Emmy history to be recognized in the supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie category.
Speaking to Deadline soon after her nomination, Mau laughed that she had been crying for 45 minutes with “overwhelming joy.” She added that it was proof that trans actors can surpass all expectations when given the right opportunities.
“For trans actors we just don’t get a lot of opportunities to develop our craft, grow as artists, and to be recognized for all that we are and all that we can be,” she said.

The nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced live from Hollywood this morning, and "The Bear" and "Shōgun" appear to be the shows to beat. The two FX on Hulu series earned a stunning 23 and 25 nominations respectively, with "Shōgun" earning several cast members first-time nominations and "The Bear" breaking the Emmys' all-time-record for the most nods in one year in the comedy category. The show –- which, as genre purists will surely point out, is actually a dramedy that often leans towards drama –- beats previous record holder "30 Rock" by one nomination.
Elsewhere on the ballot, it's clear that the absence of HBO juggernaut "Succession" has left a void in the drama category, one that several shows are vying to fill. Period pieces "The Gilded Age" and "The Crown" put up a good showing, while sci-fi shows "Fallout" and "3 Body Problem" also found a spot in the Best Drama Category.

Baby Reindeer actress Nava Mau has made history with her brand new Emmy nomination.
Mau was nominated for best supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie on Wednesday, becoming the first Latina trans nominee in this category. She is nominated alongside co-star Jessica Gunning as well as Dakota Fanning (Ripley), Lily Gladstone (Under the Bridge), Aja Naomi King (Lessons in Chemistry), Diane Lane (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans) and Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country).
Baby Reindeer follows Richard Gadd’s Donny Dunn, a struggling comedian who encounters a lonely woman at the bar where he works. The chance encounter, during which he offers her a cup of tea on the house, spirals as Martha (played by Gunning) is revealed to be a dangerous, serial stalker. Over the course of multiple years, she sent him thousands of emails, hundreds of tweets and letters, and 350 hours of voicemails.

Richard Gadd‘s smash Netflix hit Baby Reindeer has landed 11 Emmy nominations.
Among the nearly dozen nods is a best lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie for Gadd, as well as best supporting actress nominations in the equivalent category for Jessica Gunning and Nava Mau. Tom Goodman-Hill earns a best supporting actor in a limited or anthology series or movie.
The series has also nabbed nominations for best limited or anthology series, directing, writing, casting, contemporary costumes, music supervision and picture editing.
Award recognition won’t surprise viewers who closely followed the show and the subsequent fallout. The global phenomenon has become one of the streamer’s most popular shows of all time, accruing 56.6 million views within 26 days of its April 11 release. Indigenous actresses Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis have made history with their first Primetime Emmy nominations.
On Wednesday, Gladstone and Reis received nominations in the supporting actress in a limited series category for their roles in Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” and HBO/Max’s “True Detective: Night Country.” This major recognition marks the first time Indigenous women have been nominated for acting Emmys, and they are only the second and third Indigenous actors ever to be recognized in the 76-year history of the television awards.
The only other Native American person nominated in any acting category was August Schellenberg, who received an Emmy nomination in 2007 for his performance as Sitting Bull in the HBO television movie “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.”

The upcoming nominations for the best in television have been announced. The list of this year’s nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmys has been announced today by actors Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale in Hollywood. This year’s event has a rare distinction of taking place less than a year after the last event, which had been postponed to January of this year due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes that lasted for a bigger part of the summer and fall in 2023. Last year’s Emmys included winners from such shows as The Bear, Abbott Elementary and HBO’s massively popular series Succession. The ceremony is set to take place on September 15, exactly eight months after the 75th Primetime Emmys were presented on Fox. The Hollywood Reporter has listed the nominations for this year, so here are the 2024 Emmy nominees:

Two Emmy Award ceremonies in one year? The TV industry is going through a lot right now, but there’s something to be said for the shorter interval between Emmy celebrations in 2024 while awards season catches up with the timeline of 2023’s Hollywood strikes. January’s Emmy Awards honored television shows that completed their seasons between June 2022 and May 2023, and September’s ceremony will pick up right after that, with eligible shows premiering between June 2023 and May 2024.
Sheryl Lee Ralph (ABC’s “Abbott Elementary”) and Tony Hale (Netflix’s upcoming “The Decameron”) announced the nominees on July 16 for the 76th Annual Emmy Awards, which will take place on September 15.
This was the first year without a lot of usual suspects in the Emmy race, such as “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” other favorites like “The Gilded Age,” “The Bear,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “The Crown” are still in the running,...

These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority of them believe the trophy will go to Jon Hamm (“Fargo”). The 2024 Emmy nominations announcement being just one week away means that Gold Derby users have been shaping the odds in the 12 main acting races for over five months. At the end of June, eight of the initial dozen frontrunners could be credited with maintaining their top positions all season, but the same now applies to only six of them, all but one of whom are men.
The lone female February frontrunner left standing is Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”), whose victory on her second consecutive drama supporting actress bid seems quite assured. As of this week, she is generally expected to be joined in the winners’ circle by two-time comedy lead champ Jean Smart (“Hacks”), who started the season on top before being usurped by Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) a few weeks in. Now, two months after winning the favor of our Top 24 Users, Smart is every Gold Derby predictor subgroup’s first choice.

Willem Dafoe Named Artistic Director Of Venice Theatre Department
Willem Dafoe has been named Artistic Director of the Venice Biennale’s Theatre Department. Dafoe will hold the role for a two-year term from 2025 to 2026. The appointment was confirmed by the department board, headed by Pietrangelo Buttafuoco. “I was first surprised then happy to receive Pietrangelo Buttafuoco’s invitation to be the Director of the International Theatre Festival of La Biennale di Venezia 2025-2026,” Dafoe said. “I realize that I am known as a film actor, but I was born in the theatre, the theatre trained me and galvanized me. I am a stage animal. I am an actor. Theatre taught me about art and life. I worked with the Wooster Group for twenty-seven years, and I have collaborated with great directors from Richard Foreman to Bob Wilson. The direction of my Theatre program will be charted by my personal development.

Baby Reindeer became a smashing success on Netflix after its 2024 spring release date. But not everyone was happy about the show’s success.
Shortly after Baby Reindeer premiered, a Scottish woman named Fiona Harvey came forward, claiming to be the inspiration for the “Martha” character. In the show, Martha stalked, harassed, and even groped the main character without his consent. Now, Harvey is claiming Netflix completely destroyed her reputation and is suing the streaming giant for millions.
Although Fiona Harvey has her fair share of critics, she also has supporters too. Many believe Netflix treated her entirely unfairly and want justice for her.

There may have not been as much television in 2024 so far as in previous years, but there was a Hell of a lot of great TV in the first half of this year.
The harsh beauty of FX’s Shōgun, the depths of Baby Reindeer and Big Mood, the wit of Diarra from Detroit, and the surprising scope of X-Men ’97 set a very high standard. The icy reset that is the Issa López created True Detective: Night Country was another such high. Add to that the historical script flip of The Sympathizer, the sometimes brutal honestly of Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, Diane Lane and Jeff Daniels’ masterclass in A Man in Full, and the barrier drop kicking of Echo.
So, if you are looking for some true creative fireworks this Independence Day, may I suggest casting your eyes over our selection of some of the best new shows of 2024 so far.

Although 2023 Emmy nominations voters were able to view the entire second season of “The Bear” while judging the merits of its first, the team behind the FX series did not employ a similar strategy in 2024. Nonetheless, the newly released third season will still influence TV academy members as they spend part of August deciding whether season two is worthy of any wins. The latest episodes have already impacted the mindsets of Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy predictors, who have collectively boosted its odds in several categories over the past week.
As has been the case since this Emmys season began, “The Bear” currently holds over 80% of the Best Comedy Series win votes in our predictions center. Even now that our number of participating readers exceeds 3,000, none of this category’s other candidates have managed to crack 10%. “The Bear” is also expected to dominate five of the six comedy acting races,...

It’s impossible to keep up with every show on television these days. With the sheer volume of content, selecting favorites is a challenge. Here, we narrow it down to 20 standout series from the first half of 2024, capturing the full spectrum of the year’s top releases. Baby Reindeer’s Fictionalized Tale of Stalking Baby Reindeer is comedian Richard Gadd’s dramatized recount of being stalked during his twenties. The Netflix limited series centers on Donnie (Gadd), a fledgling comedian and bartender whose life spirals when a woman named Martha (Jessica Gunning) becomes pathologically obsessed with him. HBO is getting into the Richard Gadd business.
The premium cable network has come on board Lions, the BBC drama series created by the Baby Reindeer creator and star.
The British public broadcaster unveiled the project in February, two months before Gadd became a massive international star thanks to the success of the Netflix dark dramedy, which is one of the streamer’s most-watched shows ever.
The new series asks “What does it mean to be a man?” When Niall’s estranged ‘brother’ Ruben shows up at his wedding, it leads to an explosion of violence that catapults us back through their lives. Spanning almost forty years from the 1980s to the present day, the series will cover the highs and lows of the brothers’ relationship, from them meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults – with all the good, bad, terrible, funny, angry, and challenging moments along the way.

Richard Gadd will take his next series to HBO and the BBC.
The two outlets will co-produce Gadd’s follow-up to Baby Reindeer, which was a breakout success for Netflix and sparked waves of conversation over its based-on-a-true-story tale of an alleged stalker of Gadd. The new series is currently titled Lions and will follow a decades-long and very complicated relationship between two men.
“We are tremendously excited to partner with the BBC and Richard Gadd, whose remarkable talent continues to make waves across the globe,” said Kara Buckley, senior vp HBO drama programming. “With this new, gripping and evocative series, we are proud to welcome Richard to the HBO family.”

George Galloway, the controversial Scottish politician and TV personality, has said he was “relentlessly” and “physically” stalked by the real-life Martha from Baby Reindeer.
In a clip from a Piers Morgan Uncensored interview, Galloway said the stalking took place in the late 1980s and involved Fiona Harvey calling him “hundreds of times” and “showing up probably hundreds of times at the most inappropriate places.”
“At my office, wherever she discovered that we were, me and my staff and my inner circle, she would breeze in,” he added, saying it began when he was first elected MP for Glasgow Hillhead.
Asked by Morgan if Harvey had ever threatened him, he replied, “No,” but acknowledged he was afraid at times she would harm him. “Yeah, I think when someone’s obsessive, you’re always afraid that obsession might take a sudden twist and potentially a dangerous twist but she never did harm...

Arguably the closest race at this year’s Emmys, at least according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, is Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress, which as of this writing appears to be a three-way contest between Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country“), Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fargo“) and Jessica Gunning (“Baby Reindeer“). Reis has the slight edge so far with 11/2 odds, while Leigh and Gunning are tied at 6/1 odds.
Sign UPfor Gold Derby’s free newsletter with latest predictions
But our odds don’t tell the whole story. Reis is ahead for now because of how strong the consensus is that she will at least be nominated. Meanwhile, not quite as many people are certain of Gunning’s nomination, but more of them believe she’ll win. In fact, almost every predictions group favors Gunning for the win: Experts, Editors, Top 24 Users and All-Star Top 24. Leigh is actually ahead...

“Baby Reindeer” almost had a very different cast.
In a recent Variety report, a source claims that series creator/writer/star Richard Gadd’s CAA agents “pushed aggressively” for Melissa McCarthy to be cast as stalker Martha in the Netflix show that is billed as being “based on a true story.”
Per Variety, “A knowledgeable source says McCarthy met Gadd about the role but ultimately wasn’t interested. […] Those familiar with the production say Gadd micromanaged casting and fired his CAA agents after they and Netflix pushed aggressively for Melissa McCarthy to be cast as Martha.”
Jessica Gunning was later cast in the role.
The casting news comes as part of accusations lodged against Gadd alleging he manipulated his creative control to prey on potential love interests. “Baby Reindeer” production company Clerkenwell Films investigated and cleared Gadd of wrongdoing after the circulation of an actress’ claims on social media that...

The fact that the 76th Emmy nominations voting round ended on Monday means that Gold Derby’s users have had over 10 days to make their picks in five categories that were previously not included in our predictions center. After taking very little time to form, these new consensus lineups have remained virtually unchanged for nearly two weeks, presumably because they generally consist of tried-and-true contenders and almost exclusively align with the prospect of repeat wins.
Based on the predictions of all 3,000 of our participating readers, the only major change that has occurred in the five new categories since voting opened is “Top Chef” presenter Kristen Kish’s displacement of Gordon Ramsay (“Next Level Chef”) in the Best Reality/Competition Host lineup. A closer examination of the opinions of our predictor subgroups reveals more discrepancies, including that our editors stand alone in still backing Ramsay and forecasting a second consecutive Best...

A Scottish woman, Fiona Harvey, accused Netflix of defamation and claimed that the streaming giant’s Baby Reindeer series caused her immense harm. Now, her lawyer claims she can’t even go to the grocery store due to the notoriety.
The 49-year-old alleges she is the inspiration behind the Netflix stalking drama and has sued the company for at least $170 million.
Based on the real-life experiences of comedian and writer Richard Gadd, the show depicts Martha Scott, played by Jessica Gunning, as a stalker who targets Gadd’s character after he offers her a free cup of tea in a pub where he works. However, Harvey’s legal team claims that the series has falsely portrayed her as a “twice convicted stalker who was sentenced to five years in prison,” which they argue is defamatory.

Gillian Anderson was once the face of TV thanks to her role as Dana Scully in “The X-Files.” That show awarded her some healthy, consistent Emmy attention (more on that later) before she underwent a bit of a break from that awards applause for a while. However, Netflix’s “The Crown” gave her career something of a second wind and that Andernaissance (sorry) has continued here with “Scoop.”
Like “The Crown,” Anderson excels here portraying a real-life person in a true story concerning the royal family. While she played Margaret Thatcher in “The Crown,” she takes on the role of presenter and journalist Emily Maitlis in Netflix’s “Scoop.” This TV movie documents the behind-the-scenes story of how producer Samantha McAlister (Billie Piper) secured the “scoop of the decade” and landed that interview with Prince Andrew (Rufus Sewell).

Richard Gadd’s autobiographical Netflix limited series Baby Reindeer has been a bona fide cultural phenomenon, becoming one of the streamer’s most popular English-language series of all time thanks to word of mouth that spread like wildfire after the thriller debuted to little fanfare in April.
The series, inspired by his own life, stars Gadd as Donny Dunn, a struggling comedian working as a bartender who is forced to unpack his unsettling trauma while dealing with a female stalker, Martha (Jessica Gunning).

“This is a true story.”

On June 6, Fiona Harvey filed a $170 million lawsuit against Netflix, claiming the series falsely presented her as a sexual predator and a twice-convicted stalker who was sentenced to five years in prison. “As a result of [Netflix’s] lies, malfeasance and utterly reckless misconduct, Harvey’s life had been ruined,” the suit states. In response, Netflix said it stands by “Baby Reindeer” creator-writer-star Richard Gadd and his “right to tell his story.”

The lawyer suing Netflix over Baby Reindeer has seized on a report in the UK alleging that the streaming giant pushed Richard Gadd into branding the series a true story.
The Sunday Times reported over the weekend that Netflix requested the opening line “this is a true story,” despite some misgivings from Gadd, who wrote and starred in the series.
Richard Roth, the attorney representing Fiona Harvey, the real-life Martha, said the accusation suggested that Netflix’s actions over Baby Reindeer went beyond negligence.
“This is far worse than negligence, this is intentional misconduct if they were told, ‘Don’t make it a true story.’ And they said it was true,” Roth told Piers Morgan Uncensored. “They are going to have to show that they have the facts to support their claim.”

Last Thursday marked the beginning of the annual 11-day period during which members of the TV academy cast their ballots for the Primetime Emmy nominations. Since there are fewer candidates in practically every category compared to last year, there are also fewer nomination slots up for grabs. Indeed, performers eligible for half of the 16 main acting awards must now fight harder to officially compete for them.
Those who were immediately cut from Gold Derby’s predicted acting lineups once the ballots dropped were supporting players Allison Janney (“Palm Royale”), Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”), Holland Taylor (“The Morning Show”), and Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”), non-continuing program leads Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”) and Tony Shalhoub (“Mr. Monk’s Last Case”), and drama series guests Sharon Horgan (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) and Jonathan Pryce (“Slow Horses”). Yang had broken into the comedy featured male lineup just a few hours earlier,...

Baby Reindeer (Netflix)
What makes this show addictive is also what makes it disturbing, devastating and occasionally funny: its brutal honesty. Richard Gadd’s account of stalking and abuse spares no one, least of all his semi-autobiographical stand-in. But it also finds empathy for imperfect victims and troubled perpetrators alike — the latter played by Jessica Gunning with ferocious commitment. — Angie Han
Extraordinary (Hulu)
In a TV landscape teeming with superpowered folks, this series stands out — and not just because its protagonist, Jen (Máiréad Tyers), is the rare adult in her universe without a special ability. Really a quarterlife coming-of-age comedy in genre packaging, the second season digs even deeper into its characters’ psyches to explore themes as relatable as sexuality and loss. — A.H.
Fantasmas (HBO)
A show that could only have come from Julio Torres, the surreal mind behind Los Espookys, Fantasmas follows a writer trying to avoid being evicted.

Netflix’s Baby Reindeer is wildly popular with viewers.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, it’s the 10th most-watched program in Netflix history. On top of that, it earned a whopping 56.5 million viewers within the first 26 days of its release in April.
Word of mouth keeps the drama alive and well on the platform. But as more Netflix subscribers tune in, the real-life Martha’s anger grows. She and her lawyers are pursuing legal action against Netflix and now want the emails in the case to be made public.
Will she get her wish?

She alleged that after viewers discovered her identity, she received harassing messages from all over the world.

Jessica Gunning remembers the first time she made someone laugh.
“It was in a classroom,” she told IndieWire, over breakfast in SoHo while making the rounds for Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer.” “I was just doing a scene in a drama class, and then everyone, for some reason, laughed, and I got such a buzz from that. I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s the best feeling ever.’”
Born and raised in Yorkshire, in Northern England, Gunning chased that feeling down to London to attend drama school, never disabused of the notion that she could and should be a professional performer.
“I’d always just thought I could be an actor, which is rare, but I just loved the thought of it,” she said.
Gunning has been hard at work for 17 years since then, appearing in short films, features, television, and more. “Baby Reindeer” is hardly a formulaic global smash...

In 2021, The New York Times Magazine published a nearly-10,000-word feature titled “Who Is the Bad Art Friend?” The piece was about a woman named Dawn Dorland, who donated a kidney to a stranger, which she posted about at length in a Facebook group for aspiring writers. Another member of the group, Sonya Larson, wrote a short story inspired by Dorland, prompting an enraged Dorland to sue.
When “Who Is the Bad Art Friend?” was published, it prompted a massive online debate. Some sided with Dorland, arguing that Larson had...

Baby Reindeer is now one of Netflix’s most popular shows of all time.
Officially the 10th most-watched program in the streamer’s history, Richard Gadd’s limited series sat in the top spot worldwide for a month before it was dethroned and accrued 56.5 million views within 26 days of its April 11 release. “It’s been an enormous hit around the world,” Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said.
Audiences were gripped by the story of Donny, an amateur comedian played by Gadd, who, over the course of several years, is harassed, stalked and sent over 41,000 emails, 744 tweets, 100 pages of letters and 350 hours of voicemails by a woman he once pitied. In the program, Martha (played by Jessica Gunning) shows up at his gigs, sexually assaults him and threatens his family as his life slowly derails. He is also sexually abused by a top TV writer and grapples with prolonged drug use.

Ever since “Shōgun” made the move to drama series categories at the Emmys, “Fargo” has enjoyed the lead in our racetrack odds for Best Limited Series based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. But another contender has emerged, and now “Fargo’s” lead doesn’t look so secure. “Baby Reindeer” is on the way up.
Inspired by real events in the life of writer-actor Richard Gadd, “Baby Reindeer” tells the story of a struggling comedian who becomes the target of an increasingly desperate stalker (Jessica Gunning). It’s now one of the top 10 most watched English-language Netflix programs of all time. And it’s a darling of TV journalists, scoring 88 on MetaCritic and cleaning up in the Television Critics Association nominations. So perhaps it’ll be like another recent Netflix limited series, “Beef,” which went from watercooler hit to awards juggernaut.
