The 45th Durban Film Festival fittingly kicks off this year on Nelson Mandela Intl. Day, a worldwide celebration of South Africa’s first Black president, whose tireless efforts to bring an end to apartheid led to the country’s first democratic elections 30 years ago.
Three decades after the historic victory of Mandela’s African National Congress party, South Africans are wrestling with the progress and setbacks since their nation’s audacious transition to majority rule. Though the country has certainly taken bold strides in its efforts to redress the inequities of the apartheid era, looming challenges remain. Crime is rampant, as is corruption. Unemployment is high, particularly among an increasingly disgruntled generation born and raised in the democratic era. That the Anc has failed to deliver on many of its promises became stingingly obvious in elections earlier this year, when the party failed to win a majority of the vote...

The fourth season of The Boys premiered on June 13, 2024, and is still ongoing as of the time of writing, with several episodes left before the season ends. The situation in the season is as heated as the online debates about the political messages of the current season, and while we are going to talk about the show in this report as well, we are actually going to take a break from all that politics and discuss a rather peculiar issue we’ve noticed, which is related to one of the series’ most important characters – Ryan Butcher.
Namely, as things stand, many fans of the series have only just noticed that the Ryan they’ve seen late in Season 1 is not the same Ryan we have been seeing since Season 2 of the series. This caused quite a ruckus online, as many fans were certain that Cameron Crovetti, who is portraying Ryan now,...

Conspiracy theorists, have we got the show for you!
A new reality series called “Flat Earthers” will pay its players cash if they can convince a panel of (actual) experts that the world is flat. Good luck with that.
IndieWire can exclusively reveal that the recently launched streaming service The Network is in active production on “Flat Earthers” and will launch all 10 episodes this December.
“Flat Earthers” is described as part docuseries, part competition show, and it will follow five families who each genuinely believe the Earth is flat. But rather than just document their exploits, the families will each be given $50,000 worth of resources for research and will ultimately present their findings to a panel of scientists, theologians, and cartographers. If they can convince a majority of the panelists that the Earth is in fact flat, they’ll be awarded a cash prize. The amount of the cash prize was not disclosed.

Exclusive: Gotham Award winner Dawn Porter (Luther: Never Too Much) will direct and produce a documentary about one of the most iconic, politically-charged partnerships in history: the remarkable, largely untold story of Nelson and Winnie Mandela. She’ll also produce through her Trilogy Films, alongside the Schultz Family Foundation.
Based on Winnie and Nelson: Portrait of a Marriage, a book by noted South African writer and scholar Jonny Steinberg, the film will explore the Mandelas’ profound bond and how their marriage was inextricably entangled with the struggle against apartheid. The film promises an intimate portrayal of Nelson and Winnie’s marriage, delving into their vehement and volatile connection from their early years to their mutual goal of dismantling apartheid. Killer Mike swung by The Late Show to perform “Exit 9,” a song off his Grammy-winning 2023 album, Michael.
The Atlanta rapper dedicated the performance to his grandmother, Betty, breezing through the pensive track, which finds him pondering current successes and past struggles, progress and setbacks, and all the work that remains to be done. Killer Mike was joined on stage by DJ Trackstar and the Midnight Revival Choir, whose live vocals lent a warm touch to “Exit 9,” especially during the a cappella final refrain, “I remember them days, makin’ minimum wage/I was tryna maintain,...

Update, with video: Grammy-winning Atlanta rapper Killer Mike appeared on The View today, and reflected on his recent arrest – in handcuffs – at the Grammys earlier this month, saying, “All of my heroes have been in handcuffs – Malcolm, Martin, Mandela, Medgar. I walked out with the same dignity and respect that I walked in with, and I would implore people to just take that from it.”
The rapper was asked about the incident by View co-host Sunny Hostin, who acknowledged that the ongoing legal case restricted the extent to which Killer Mike, real name Mike Render, could discuss.
As he has previously said, Killer Mike described the evening by noting, “Backstage was overcrowded, the winners were exuberant and I think security got a little overzealous.”
Watch the interview below.
The activist-entrepreneur-rapper was taken into custody following his triple-Grammy win February 4 by the LAPD following an alleged altercation with a security guard earlier.

Reach for the sky cause Mario Van Peebles has returned to the old West! In 1993, Mario Van Peebles dabbled in the Western genre with Posse, which he had written, directed, and starred in. Now, Peebles has gotten back into the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The trailer has now been released courtesy of Quiver Distribution and features Mario Van Peebles acting alongside his son, Mandela, who also plays his son in the movie. This keeps the tradition of the Van Peebles filmmaking lineage rolling along as Mario was also heavily involved with his father, Melvin Van Peebles’ film career. Mario would even make a biopic where he portrayed his own father with the film Baadasssss!, which is a play on the title of Melvin’s famous movie Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.

New York-based The Film Sales Company has pounced on the worldwide rights to Colombian documentary feature “Igualada” by Juan Mejía Botero ahead of its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition sidebar.
Mejía Botero, whose most recent feature documentary “Death by a Thousand Cuts” won the Audience Award at Doc NYC, chronicles politician Francia Márquez’s groundbreaking journey from her start as a rural grassroot activist to her history-making campaign to become not only the first black but also the first female president of her native Colombia.
Given exclusive access, Mejía Botero follows Márquez as she “dares to challenge the status quo by launching a presidential campaign in Colombia, a nation beset by profound racial and socio-economic disparities,” per the synopsis.
Reclaiming the derogatory term “igualada” (used to belittle individuals asserting rights deemed beyond their position in society), Márquez propels a movement into the upper spheres of influence,...

World premiering out of the Marrakech Film Festival ahead of a wider and promising festival run, Luck Razanajaona’s “Disco Afrika: A Malagasy Story” will offer the cinema of Madagascar its most prominent international showcase in nearly three decades.
The feat didn’t come easy — or quickly — for the Malagasy filmmaker, who graduated from Marrakech’s Esav film school in 2011 and then spent more than a decade crafting award-winning shorts while developing his first feature. Throughout that long development period — which eventually brought the filmmaker back to Marrakech for a slot at last year’s Atlas Workshops — Razanajaona honed and refined this story of a barely post-adolescent sapphire miner who returns to his native village in search of identity.
Among the many challenges was the simple question of period: The fact is, given Madagascar’s shatteringly predictable holding pattern, the narrative of dashed hopes and calls for reform could take...

The tragedy of lost media is real ... especially when it's lost from everything but false childhood memories. In a truly bizarre situation, many '90s kids claim to have seen a movie called "Shazaam," wherein Sinbad played a genie summoned by a young brother and sister. But no such movie exists.
False memories can seem like a plot device out of science fiction, but they're actually pretty mundane. The human brain is imperfect, after all. What's more bizarre is when multiple, unrelated people have the same false memories. This phenomenon has been termed "the Mandela Effect," named for former South African President and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela.
And these memories of "Shazaam" are false. Sinbad himself has refuted them via Twitter. He even suggested people are misremembering a costume he wore to host a TV marathon of Sinbad the Sailor movies as his "Shazaam" outfit. That said, he did get...

Quoting Mandela, Harry says, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we’ve lived.”
Meghan finishes it off by saying, “It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
