“Lady in the Lake” is a study in contrasts. It begins with an appropriately ominous cold open of a corpse being thrown into dark, cold waters outside of Baltimore while the victim herself (Moses Ingram) narrates that a collision of worlds is coming between her and the Jewish housewife (Natalie Portman) who will find her body. Already, that’s a lot.
But coming back from the credits, there’s then a seedy, slightly comic spectacle of a hungover guy in a silver beanie and gigantic cardboard mailbox costume (the ‘60s sure seem weird?) pissing in an alley before jogging back out onto the street and into formation as part of a Christmas Day parade. Then there’s director Alma Har’el’s camera, weaving and dancing its way through the crowded chaos, never quite positioning us in one place or one perspective. Tonally and visually, Har’el continually keeps the audience off-balance.

Apple TV’s Lady in the Lake series begins with the disappearance of a 9-year-old Jewish girl named Tessie Durst, who was visiting the famous Baltimore Thanksgiving parade with her parents and siblings. On her way back, Tessie found an aquarium store on the streets and left her parents behind to buy a seahorse for herself. However, the attendant at the store was a mentally disturbed individual with malicious intentions. As soon as he found Tessie alone, he locked her in the basement and hurt her in the most unimaginable ways. Some two days later, Tessie’s dead body was found near the lake. Though this fictional incident is quite shocking in itself, one might be horrified to know that it is inspired by a real-life incident. On October 1, 1969, the Baltimore police found the dead body of an 11-year-old girl named Esther Lebowitz, brutally raped and murdered. Esther had been...

Created by Alma Har’el and adapted from Laura Lippman’s crime novel of the same name, Lady in the Lake draws inspiration from two real-life murder cases in 1960s Baltimore. Maddie Schwartz (Natalie Portman), a middle-class mother in an unfulfilling marriage, serves as a bridge between the contrasting social worlds of the two victims: an 11-year-old Jewish girl, Tessa Durst (Bianca Belle), and an unidentified Black woman who investigators believe may be Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram), a missing mother of two.
In the opening episode, Tessa disappears while attending a Thanksgiving parade with her parents. Drawn by her fascination with seahorses, the young girl wanders into a tropical fish store, where she encounters the creepy manager, Stephan Zawadzkie (Dylan Arnold), and a Black customer, Reggie Robinson (Josiah Cross). These early episodes, marked by the uncertainties of Tessa’s death, set the stage for the show’s intrigue involving the central mystery.

So it turns out Apple TV+’s “Lady in the Lake” looks different than some had expected.
The Natalie Portman-led limited series is described as “a feverish noir thriller and an unexpected tale of the price women pay for their dreams.” Based on the information released so far, it seemed like a 1960s period piece/murder mystery/character drama about an investigative journalist who prioritizes her career over her family.
But the new trailer for the series reveals dreamlike fantasy sequences, narration from beyond the grave, and unsettling psychological thriller flourishes. This is “Black Swan” Portman as much as “Jackie” Portman.
Academy Award winner Portman, who also serves as executive producer, stars as Maddie Schwartz, a Jewish journalist in late ‘60s Baltimore who becomes obsessed with the unsolved murder of Cleo Johnson (“The Queen’s Gambit” breakout Moses Ingram), a Black woman who was found floating in a reservoir. L to R: Dylan Arnold is Frank Oppenheimer and Matt Damon is Leslie Groves in Oppenheimer, written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan. At first glance, it would have seemed like Oppenheimer wouldn’t exactly be blockbuster movie material. Yes, J. Robert Oppenheimer’s name is in the history books, but he was far from being a household name to today’s moviegoing audience. So, what turned Oppenheimer’s story into one of the year’s biggest movies? Matt Damon gives most of the credit to Christopher Nolan, who both wrote the screenplay and directed the movie, because of his skill in turning complex ideas into scenes everybody can understand. Movie fans who haven’t had a chance to see Oppenheimer in director Christopher Nolan’s recommended format of IMAX 70mm now have until the end of August. Per Variety, the atomic bomb biopic’s 70mm run has been extended two weeks past its original date of August 17th due to popular demand.
Back in June, Nolan told The Associated Press that the premium film format offered the “best possible experience” to see Oppenheimer because its “sharpness and the clarity and the depth of the image is unparalleled.” He added, “By shooting on IMAX 70mm film, you’re really letting the screen disappear. You’re getting a feeling of 3D without the glasses. You’ve got a huge screen and you’re filling the peripheral vision of the audience. You’re immersing them in the world of the film.”

You’re getting a feeling of 3D without the glasses. You’ve got a huge screen and you’re filling the peripheral vision of the audience. You’re immersing them in the world of the film.”

At 180 minutes, it’s not improbable to think there are no deleted scenes for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Sometimes, fans look forward to home release materials getting packed with extras, but Cillian Murphy is here to burst the bubble, saying what you see is what you get when it comes to Nolan’s latest opus.
Speaking with Collider, Murphy said there’s a meticulous method to Nolan’s madness, leaving no opportunity for scenes to fall onto the cutting room floor. “There’s no deleted scenes in Chris Nolan movies,” Murphy commented. “That’s why there are no DVD extras on his movies because the script is the movie. He knows exactly what’s going to end up – he’s not fiddling around with it trying to change the story. That is the movie.”
Murphy’s well-versed in Nolan’s ways after teaming up with the acclaimed director on multiple feature-length projects.

Dylan Arnold had to learn some physics for his role in 'Oppenheimer'.The 29-year-old actor stars in Christopher Nolan's film as Frank Oppenheimer - the younger brother of Cillian Murphy's main character J. Robert Oppenheimer – and wanted a basic understanding of the science behind the creation of the atomic bomb.Dylan told The Hollywood Reporter: "I wanted to have somewhat of an understanding. It still baffles me the way the Oppenheimers' minds work, and it would've been a fool's errand to try to really understand everything on the physics side."So I had a general knowledge of it, but what you want to do as an actor is tap into the human element and figure out how this guy feels about all this. And then tap into that passion and that drive, and go from there."The 'Halloween Kills' star continued: "Fortunately, I don't have to teach any physics classes,...

Dylan Arnold would’ve been content with merely a callback from Christopher Nolan, but he got that and so much more by way of the acclaimed filmmaker’s latest film, Oppenheimer.
In Nolan’s most well-received film since 2008’s The Dark Knight, Arnold plays J. Robert Oppenheimer’s (Cillian Murphy) younger brother, Frank, who was a brilliant physicist in his own right. But as dramatized in the film, Frank’s one-time involvement with the American Communist Party caused a number of obstacles for Robert before, during and after the Manhattan Project.
When actors take on complex roles that an entire film hinges on, there have been plenty of horror stories about how some of them have handled that pressure on set, but what impressed Arnold the most is the way Cillian Murphy carried himself despite the monumental expectations he was facing.

The Halloween (2018) episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written and Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
When it comes to horror franchises the Halloween series is a bit like Chewbacca; it doesn’t make a lot of sense narratively unless you really understand what is going on. That’s right, you just heard a Star Wars reference in a video about a Halloween movie. Just roll with it… Technically the Halloween films are four different stories and one one-off tale told over the course of thirteen films, if my math is right away. Only one of these narrative shifts seems to have been done for creative reasons while the rest were undertaken in an effort to continue the series and make more money from the Halloween brand. If this sounds cynical to you,...

The Oppenheimer Opening Look introduces a montage of scenes spanning the film, depicting the science, heartache, and paranoia of building a device that could destroy the world.

Emily Blunt told People magazine that starring in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” was like “summer camp” because the film’s ensemble cast lived together in New Mexico during production. However, it appears that leading man Cillian Murphy sat out most group activities.
“We were all in the same hotel in the middle of the New Mexican desert,” Blunt said. “We only had each other. Me and Matt [Damon] were roommates and we were like, ‘Let’s go to have dinner.'”
Murphy did not attend because “the sheer volume of what he had to take on and shoulder is so monumental,” Blunt added.
“Of course he didn’t want to come and have dinner with us,” Damon said. “He couldn’t. His brain was just too full.”
For Murphy, “Oppenheimer” marks the biggest leading role of his film career thus far. That kind of pressure isolated the actor. “You know that...

The hottest film event of the summer is fast approaching! That’s right, folks! Two film industry titans, Barbie and Oppenheimer, will soon battle it out for box office supremacy! Before you bet on who wins the top spot on the charts, see what analysts predict for the July 21-23 weekend.
Tracking for both films is interesting, to say the least. Great Gerwig‘s Barbie could open to a peppy $70 million-$80 million, with an opportunity to make more. Warner Bros, who’s licking its wounds after The Flash underperformed, is holding out for $60M, just to be cautious.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie introduces several Barbie and Ken variants, each with a different personality, background, and status in a bizarre world of partying, shopping, beachside brawls, and feeble attempts at flirtation. The footage piles on the strange as Barbie and Ken seemingly travel to the real world, where everything becomes more unhinged than it was before.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, this summer’s Oppenheimer is an IMAX®-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it. Sounds pretty intense, yeah? Well according to Nolan himself in a new chat with Wired, it’s “kind of a horror movie.”
“Some people leave the movie absolutely devastated,” Nolan tells the outlet. “They can’t speak. I mean, there’s an element of fear that’s there in the history and there in the underpinnings. But the love of the characters, the love of the relationships, is as strong as I’ve ever done.”
Nolan continues…

Universal’s three-minute “Shooting for IMAX” featurette focuses on the use of IMAX cameras to bring audiences the complete Oppenheimer experience. Very little new footage is revealed while writer/director Christopher Nolan, director of photography Hoyte Van Hoytema, and the film’s stars Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, and Robert Downey Jr discuss the advantages of filming in IMAX and how immersive the viewing experience becomes when IMAX cameras are used.
“Oppenheimer’s story is one of the biggest stories imaginable. Our film tries to take you into his experience, and IMAX for me is a portal into a level of immersion that you can’t get from other formats,” explained Christopher Nolan.

The 2024 Oscars race received a jolt on Monday morning with the debut of a new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.”
In the best teaser yet for Nolan’s upcoming drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, title star Cillian Murphy and supporting player Matt Damon as Lt. General Leslie Groves Jr. are given the lion’s share of material. A particularly pithy exchange:
Groves: “Are we saying there’s a chance that when we push that button, we destroy the world?”
Oppenheimer: “The chances are near zero.”
Groves: “Near zero?”
Oppenheimer: “What do you want from theory alone?”
Groves: “Zero would be nice.”
Murphy has appeared in six Nolan films including “Oppenheimer,” but the upcoming Universal release is the first time the “Batman Begins” star has taken a lead role for the filmmaker. “You realize this is a huge responsibility. He was complicated and contradictory and so iconic,...

A new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer reveals more story details and characters from the biographical drama chronicling the development of the first atomic bomb.
The trailer — which was first shown at CinemaCon and then revealed in theaters before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 — shows scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) teaming with General Leslie Groves Jr. (Matt Damon) to assemble a team of scientists during World War II as they try and beat the Nazis in harnessing the destructive power of nuclear energy.
“You’re the man who gave them the power to destroy themselves,” Oppenheimer is ominously warned. “… and the world is not prepared.”
The World War II-set biopic follows Oppenheimer, known as the “father of the atomic bomb,” during a moment in history when he knew that testing the atomic bomb might ignite the atmosphere and destroy the world, but hit the button anyway. “In learning about that story,...

Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy’s working relationship spans nearly 20 years and counting as the filmmaker has directed the “Peaky Blinders” favorite in six movies: Three Batman films, “Inception,” “Dunkirk” and “Oppenheimer.” Notably, however, the upcoming atomic bomb drama marks Murphy’s first time headlining a Nolan picture in the lead role. Murphy stars as theoretical physicist and “father of the atomic bomb” J. Robert Oppenheimer. In a recent interview with the Associated Press, the actor admitted he “was desperate” to lead a Nolan movie.
“I have always said publicly and privately, to Chris, that if I’m available and you want me to be in a movie, I’m there. I don’t really care about the size of the part,” Murphy said. “But deep down, secretly, I was desperate to play a lead for him.”
Murphy landed the lead role in “Oppenheimer” via a cold-call offer from Nolan.

Christopher Nolan kicked off Universal’s CinemaCon presentation today in Las Vegas, taking the stage to talk about his thriller Oppenheimer, which releases in July. Cillian Murphy stars as the titular J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist whose work on the Manhattan Project led to the creation of the atomic bomb.
“I’m here with a story in the story of J Robert Oppenheimer,” Nolan said. “I know of no more dramatic tale with higher stakes, twists and turns and ethical dilemmas. … The finest minds in the country were in a desperate race against the Nazis to harness the power of the atom in World War II. Picture those same minds realizing the possibility that they might set fire to the entire world, yet they went ahead and pushed the button. I wanted to be there and see what that might be like.”
