The 20th anniversary HollyShorts Film Festival is set to honor a quartet of major Hollywood talents, from industry veterans to an up-and-coming star.
Actor Tom Skeritt, actor-director Alden Ehrenreich, director Catherine Hardwicke, and young actress Lexi Underwood will receive laurels at the prestigious Oscar-qualifying festival, which runs from August 8-18.
HollyShorts will present its Luminary Award to Ehrenreich in recognition of his work in front of and behind the camera. Ehrenreich’s directorial debut, Shadow Brother Sunday, screened last year at HollyShorts following its world premiere at Tribeca Festival.
‘Shadow Brother Sunday’
“I was very flattered to have my film Shadow Brother Sunday included in this wonderful festival last year and had a great time meeting all those involved,” Ehrenreich said in a statement. “I am even more flattered – flattered times two – to be chosen to receive this special honor. I am proud to see the Los Angeles film community gather and support each other.

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” has officially cast Percy’s half-brother Tyson. Daniel Diemer will play him in Season 2 of the Disney+ series.
Series creator Rick Riordan announced the news himself in a video message to those in attendance at San Diego Comic-Con, during the show’s Hall H panel on Thursday. Diemer also filmed a video message expressing his excitement to join the show as the cyclops.
Diemer is best known for playing Paul Munsky in Netflix’s “The Half of It,” and most recently starred as Scott Bentland in “Under the Bridge” alongside Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough.
Season 2 of the “Percy Jackson” adaptation will follow the second book in the series, “The Sea of Monsters.” In the books, Percy learns that he has a half-brother only when he goes on a quest for the golden fleece. Because Poseidon fathered Tyson with a nymph, Tyson is actually a cyclops.

Academy Award® winner Brendan Fraser has been cast in ‘Pressure,’ joining the recently announced Andrew Scott in the role of Britain’s chief meteorological officer James Stagg.
Fraser takes on the role of Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower.
In the seventy-two hours leading up to D-Day, all the pieces are in place except for one key element – the British weather. Britain’s chief meteorological officer James Stagg (Andrew Scott) is called upon to deliver the most consequential forecast in history, locking him into a tense standoff with the entire Allied leadership. The wrong conditions could devastate the largest ever seaborne invasion, while any delay risks German intelligence catching on.
With only his trusted aide Captain Kay Summersby to confide in, and haunted by a catastrophic D-Day rehearsal, the final decision rests with Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower (Brendan Fraser).
Also in news – Stephen Graham, Ashley Walters join cast...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we are still reeling from Wednesday’s nominations.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Now that the dust has settled on the 2024 Emmy nominations, how are you feeling about what transpired? It’s not the main headline, but I’m still shaking my head at Lily Gladstone and Robert Downey Jr. making it in as lone nominees from their shows, just some real major namecheck vibes from the actors’ branch of the academy — particularly since Downey was nominated somehow without a corresponding prosthetic makeup citation for “The Sympathizer” prosthetic makeup designer Vincent Van Dyke, a former winner and 13-time nominee. Tell me you didn’t watch these shows without telling me you didn’t watch these shows. In terms of import, most...

Although pretty much all of the projects tamed by Taylor Sheridan have been absolute pieces of real masterworks, Wind River, somehow, surpassed all of those expectations by tremendous margins. But while it was a major blockbuster success both at the global box offices as well as among critics and general audiences, it also received some typical scathing criticism from some viewers.

Other things apart, one of the most nitpicked parts of the iconic masterpiece from 2017 that might as well be called its biggest criticism was casting Jeremy Renner in the lead instead of an Indigenous actor. However, as harshly as critics pointed this one primary feature of the movie out, Sheridan also didn’t quite have the choice if he really wanted to get people to watch the film in the first place.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is now available on VOD. There’s no way around it – the film’s theatrical release was a huge disappointment, as it earned back only a fraction of its reported budget and has put the release of the second film in major jeopardy. However, now that it’s streaming, the hope is that people will be able to discover it at home, perhaps paving the way for this saga to continue. If you’ve watched Horizon and are jonesing for more modern westerns to check out, here are some we really like here at JoBlo.
Tombstone (1993):
This is perhaps an ironic one to put on a list that pays tribute to Costner’s Horizon, as the star’s own big-budget western epic, Wyatt Earp, was badly overshadowed by this competing story about the same historical events. The fact is, George Pan Cosmatos and Kurt Russell...

The 2024 Emmy nominations made waves this week, with The Bear breaking records alongside Carol Burnett, Nava Mau, Steve Martin and more.
This year, FX’s The Bear broke the record for the most nominations for a comedy series, earning 23 nods for the show’s second season. The milestone comes after the series set the record at last year’s ceremony (held in January due to strike delays) for the most awards won by a debut season, at 10.
The show’s network, FX, also had reason to celebrate this week, setting a record for itself with 93 nominations.
Elsewhere on the awards docket, many celebrated their first-ever nomination, including The Bear’s Liza Colón-Zayas and others broke their own records, while more set new ones.
The 2024 Emmys will be broadcast live on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt on ABC. Click here for the complete list of nominees.

At the most recent Oscars, Emma Stone became the lucky 13th winner of two Best Actress awards when she picked up the prize for “Poor Things”; she had prevailed seven years earlier for “La La Land.” When she won back then Stone was 28 and joined the ranks of 31 other winners in their 20s. Another 35, including Stone the second time around, have been thirtysomething when they took to the stage to collect their Oscars.
Bracketing Stone’s two wins were women who defied this bias toward youth: 60-year-old Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”); 45-year old Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”); double champ Frances McDormand (who was 60 and 63 when she won for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and “Nomadland” respectively), 45-year-old Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and 50-year-old Renee Zellweger (“Judy”). Is there anything Maya Rudolph can’t do? It’s a serious question, as the comedy superstar reigns as this year’s Emmy nominations Mvp. Rudolph earned four nominations — a stunning achievement in itself, but made even more impressive because those nods come from three different programs. She’s nominated in comedy lead actress for Apple TV+’s “Loot” (just renewed for a third season), in character voice-over for her role as Connie the Hormone Monstress in Netflix’s animated “Big Mouth,” and in comedy guest actress for her hosting stint on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” (which also got her an original music and lyrics nod for her monologue tune).
It’s quite a year for Emmy overachievers. Several acting stars also landed writing noms, like Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Richard Gadd (“Baby Reindeer”) and Donald Glover (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”). Others nominated thesps are also producers on their nominated best series.

Every year, the Television Academy’s Emmy nominations honor hundreds of individuals , dozens of shows and inspire enough material for a week’s worth of trend pieces. Sorting through it all is daunting, which is why Variety TV critics Alison Herman and Aramide Tinubu convened to give their big-picture thoughts on the nominations , from breakout shows to the larger forces shaping the field.
Alison Herman: Aramide, this was always going to be a weird year for the Emmys — after all, the last Emmys happened just six months ago! That January ceremony had been delayed by Hollywood’s historic dual strikes, which also pushed several awards-staple series outside this year’s eligibility window. Throw in the power vacuum left behind by “Succession” wrapping its run and you have a relatively blank slate. Given the Academy’s propensity to rally around just a handful of favorites each year, á la “Ted Lasso,...

A total of 36 individuals earned their first Primetime Emmy acting nominations in 2024, including “Feud” stars Naomi Watts and Tom Hollander and recent Oscar also-rans Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Ryan Gosling (“Saturday Night Live”). A standout among these newbies is Paul Rudd, who is the only one in the group with shots at two performance wins: Best Comedy Supporting Actor (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Best Narrator (“Secrets of the Octopus”).
Rudd could now make Emmys history as the eighth doubly-nominated first-timer to triumph on at least one of his bids. The first to do so was Robert Cummings, who simultaneously won for “12 Angry Men” and lost for “My Hero” in 1955. He was followed by Jack Albertson, Eileen Brennan, Jane Lynch, Riz Ahmed, Ann Dowd, and Ali Wong.

The nominations for the 76th annual Emmys have dropped. There were some records broken, a lot of surprises including 36 first-time nominees and some major snubs. And a lot of fun facts and trivia about this year’s nominees. FX’s period drama series “Shogun” earning 25 Emmy nominations this year, the most of any dramatic series this year. The original NBC miniseries adaptation of the James Clavell best-seller which starred Richard Chamberlain and the legendary Toshiro Mifune received 14 nominations and won for limited series, costume design, graphic design and title sequences. Hulu’s “The Bear” broke the record for most nominations for a comedy series earning 23 nominations. NBC’s “30 Rock” had held the record with 22 nominations since 2009. Native Americans finally have some representation in this year’s nomination with Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis earning outstanding supporting actress nominations for Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” and HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.

Shōgun leads the pack with 25 Emmy nominations with The Bear close behind with 23 nominations.
We may have just left this year’s awards season behind but there’s another major awards ceremony looming in the near future. The Emmy nominations were announced last night and they reflect a great year of TV.
Shōgun, Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks’ ambitious epic based on James Clavell’s novel, received a whopping 25 nominations across all categories. With more seasons of the acclaimed series now planned, Shōgun qualified for the Outstanding Drama category instead of a Limited or Anthology Series.
Shōgun is up for Oustanding Drama Series and Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai are both nominated for Lead Actor and Actress respectively.

Awards season may well be over on the film front for another year, but on the TV front, the race for golden statue glory is far from over. Earlier today at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, the nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced in a live ceremony fronted by Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph alongside Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. And leading the pack on the nominations front this time around? That'd be feudal Japanese epic Shōgun which, after a dramatic pivot from Limited Series to Drama after news of the series' surprise renewal, has bagged 25 nominations, including nods for stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai as well as shouts for Outstanding Drama, Writing, Direction, and much more besides.

Actor and executive producer Matt Bomer has earned his second Emmy nomination, this time for his role as the lovelorn State Department official Hawk Fuller on Showtime’s Fellow Travelers.
Created by Ron Nyswaner, based on Thomas Mallon’s novel, Fellow Travelers is a love story and political thriller, chronicling the clandestine romance of two very different men who meet in the shadow of McCarthy-era Washington. Bomer plays Fuller, a man with a successful career in politics who generally avoids emotional entanglements — until he meets the idealistic Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey). The two begin a romance just as Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on “subversives and sexual deviants,” initiating one of the darkest periods in 20th-century American history. Over the course of four decades, we follow the pair as they cross paths through the Vietnam War protests of the 1960s, the drug-fueled disco hedonism of the 1970s...

Jane Lynch earned her 14th Primetime Emmy Award nomination this morning for her work on NBC’s The Weakest Link under the “Outstanding Game Show Host” category.
The series revival is an adaptation of the British TV series of the same name hosted by Anne Robinson— a personality whose approach Lynch admired—premiered in 2020 with Lynch at the helm. The second half of Season 3 aired earlier this year.
In conversation with Deadline earlier today, Lynch tipped her hat to The Weakest Link writers for their important role in helping her be the host with the most.

It may not seem like there is a lot to celebrate in Hollywood these days, but the 2024 Emmy Awards nominations provided joy for many this morning. “Shogun” and “The Bear” were some of the major winners in nomination totals And Netflix topped competitor HBO/Max with the most nominations overall with 107. But, leave it to Larry David to provide the most blunt reaction to his own Emmy Haul.

Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars were at a lull this year at the Primetime Emmy noms with five apiece.
While that’s up +2 from Marvel’s count of three last year with the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, Star Wars‘ tally this year, all for Ahsoka, is off considerably from 2023’s 23 noms, which was fueled by series Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Marvel’s foray into streaming series on Disney+ rallied them to respective heights of 28 noms in 2021 spurred by WandaVision and in 2022 with 19 Emmy noms juiced by Moon Knight, Loki, What If? and Hawkeye.

The nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced today. While it was a mostly predictable affair, the announcement still sprinkled in a few welcome surprises among the expected contenders. The FX/Hulu contingent had a remarkable showing with two series dominating the proceedings. The feudal Japan-set drama "Shōgun" fared better than any other series with 25 nominations, and acclaimed dramedy "The Bear" set a new record for a comedy series with 23 nods.
Netflix ended up with the most nominations of any studio with 107. Leading their roster was surprise hit "Baby Reindeer," which received 11 nominations, including acting nods for creator Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau, and Tom Goodman-Hill.
Several breakthroughs and firsts were celebrated, including Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Kali Reis (“True Detective”) becoming the first indigenous women to receive acting nominations. In its final season, FX’s “Reservation Dogs” scored its first Emmy nomination for Best Comedy Series. The show's star D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai also earned his first acting nod as did Selena Gomez for "Only Murders in the Building."
Other interesting stories coming out of the nomination announcement include the late Treat Williams receiving a posthumous nomination for "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans" and a surprise nod for Idris Elba as lead actor in a drama for “Hijack.” Elba edged out contenders like Cosmo Jarvis in “Shogun,” Colin Farrell in “Sugar,” and Nathan Fielder in “The Curse.”
The 76th Primetime Emmys airs September 15th on ABC, just eight months after the previous ceremony which was delayed due to the writers' and actors' strikes.

It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions for Scavengers Reign fans over the last two months. First, the acclaimed animated sci-fi series was canceled by Max after one season. Then its first season got a non-exclusive second run on Netflix while remaining on Max, raising the possibility for more episodes if it does well at its new home.
But when Scavengers Reign debuted on Netflix May 31, it didn’t get the proverbial “Netflix boost” and did not break into the streamer’s weekly Top 10 rankings, dampening hopes for a Season 2 pickup.

While it’s hard to believe that Dakota Fanning hasn’t previously been recognized by the TV Academy, having now been acting for 25 years, she did in fact earn her first Emmy nomination this morning, speaking with Deadline about her upcoming Paramount horror film Vicious, her upcoming Netflix murder mystery series The Perfect Couple, and her creative ambitions going forward.

Of her time working on the film, dated for release on August 8, 2025, Fanning said, “I absolutely loved that experience, and that was very different from anything I’ve done before. Just six months after the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards (which were delayed amid the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023), the nominations for the 76th Emmy Awards have been revealed. While things mostly went as expected, a few standouts are worth noting. Apple TV+ and FX have positioned themselves as true competitors against long-dominating networks like Netflix and HBO/Max. Moreover, in a hard-won battle for representation, the Indigenous community and women of color have made significant strides, suggesting that the television landscape has finally turned a corner regarding diversity and inclusion. Thirty-four performers across diverse backgrounds received Primetime Emmy nominations today which is even with last year when the Television Academy recognized the same number of nominees in the acting and reality hosting categories.
This year’s count remains above the 2019 low of 26 non-Caucasian actors and reality hosts, yet still far from 2021’s record 49 nominees.
The biggest gain this year was with indigenous performers with Under the Bridge‘s Lily Gladstone and True Detective: Night Country‘s Kali Reis both nominated in the category of Supporting Actress Limited Series, Anthology or Movie.
Also breaking through is Reservation Dogs star D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai who landed a nom in Comedy Series Lead Actor. The Oji-Cree First Nations and Guyanese actor portrays Bear Smallhill on the FX series, which finally landed a Best Comedy Series nod after three years on the air; the show ultimately ending. On Wednesday morning the hit Max comedy show Hacks celebrated a total of 17 Emmy nominations — among them, Best Comedy Series, Lead Comedy Actress for Jean Smart, Comedy Supporting Actress for Hannah Einbinder and Comedy Supporting Actor for showrunner and star Paul W. Downs.
Speaking to Deadline following the announcement, Smart, who stars as comedy icon Deborah Vance on the show, said she was “so excited” for the entire team, making special mention of her “absolutely brilliant” nominated makeup artist Keith Sayer and guest star Kaitlin Olsen, who plays Deborah’s daughter.
Speaking of guest stars, Hacks has a history of booking some juicy picks, like Emmy-nominated Christopher Lloyd, Helen Hunt and Christina Hendricks, to name a few from Season 3. And lately, Smart and Einbinder have been chatting about a dream guest star they’d love to see in Season 4: Elton John.

The 2024 Emmy nominations are out, and this year’s slate of nominees has a solid showing for Asian American, Latino, Indigenous, and LGBTQ representation in the acting categories.

Last year’s crop of nominees included 25 people of color. In 2022, 42 people of color were nominated in the acting categories (30 in main and 12 in guest); in 2021, 25 were nominated (19 in main and six in guest).
Indigenous actors and creators were a bright spot in this year’s nominations. Issa López is ready to pour herself a glass of bubbly to celebrate the 19 Emmy nominations for True Detective: Night Country — and then dive headfirst back into the next season of the HBO anthology.
“A dear friend of mine came today at 8 a.m. with a bottle of champagne, and it’s still waiting in the fridge. We’re going to crack it open the moment that I’m done with calls,” she told Deadline. “I’m a happy person. I’ve had a beautiful life. This is one of the best mornings in my life.”
True Detective: Night Country quickly became the most successful iteration of the franchise after it debuted in January. Within about a month, López was attached to a fifth season, which she now says is a “fun, dark, f*cked up story” that she’s itching to start making. She is currently in the writing process.

Reis made history during the 76th Annual Emmy nominations on Wednesday morning as Reis, nominated for Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for True Detective: Night Country, alongside Lily Gladstone for Supporting Actress in a Drama for Under the Bridge, became the first Indigenous actresses nominated for an Emmy.

Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria will be making a lot of pleasant phone calls today after the streamer landed 107 Emmy nominations across 35 different shows.
It’s not the streamer’s biggest nomination haul — that was 160 in 2020 — but it put it firmly in the lead with FX coming in a surprise second with 93 nominations, higher than HBO and Max.
There were sizeable hauls for British shows Baby Reindeer and The Crown, and Ripley, which it picked up after it had been produced, but Bajaria is most pleased about the diversity of its nominations.
Shows such as All The Light We Cannot See, Blue Eye Samurai, The Gentlemen, The Greatest Night In Pop, Griselda, Love on the Spectrum U.S., 3 Body Problem and The Upshaws were all recognized, highlighting its “breadth” of programming, according to Bajaria.

Nava Mau has said the Emmy nomination for her Baby Reindeer breakthrough is a victory for the transgender acting community.
Mau played Teri in the hit Netflix series and becomes the first trans woman in Emmy history to be recognized in the supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie category.
Speaking to Deadline soon after her nomination, Mau laughed that she had been crying for 45 minutes with “overwhelming joy.” She added that it was proof that trans actors can surpass all expectations when given the right opportunities.
“For trans actors we just don’t get a lot of opportunities to develop our craft, grow as artists, and to be recognized for all that we are and all that we can be,” she said.

The Emmy Award nominations on Wednesday morning made history across various categories including Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series which recognized Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis for their work in Hulu’s Under The Bridge and Max’s True Detective: Night Country, respectively.
The nods—both Gladstone and Reis’ first— make the pair the first Indigenous women to receive Emmy acting nominations.
Until today, August Schellenberg was the only Native American actor to be nominated for an acting Emmy. He was recognized for his portrayal of Sitting Bull in HBO’s Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee in 2007 under the “Outstanding Actor in a Miniseries or Move” category.
Additionally, FX’s Reservation Dogs finally earned some Emmy love for its final season including Best Comedy Series and Lead Actor in a Comedy for D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai.

Fallout scored an impressive 16 Emmy nominations on Wednesday, including a nod for Outstanding Drama Series.
It’s one of the most-nominated shows that Amazon’s Prime Video has ever in a single year (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel put up 20 in its heyday), and it also is another shining moment for video game adaptations, following on the heels of the success of The Last of Us last year.
“It’s a 25-year-old game franchise that just keeps getting more and more relevant with the way that it takes on a lot of very serious issues about our society and our deepest fears, but it plays with them in a really fun way and makes it a world that you want to spend time in,” series creator and showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet told Deadline.

The nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced live from Hollywood this morning, and "The Bear" and "Shōgun" appear to be the shows to beat. The two FX on Hulu series earned a stunning 23 and 25 nominations respectively, with "Shōgun" earning several cast members first-time nominations and "The Bear" breaking the Emmys' all-time-record for the most nods in one year in the comedy category. The show –- which, as genre purists will surely point out, is actually a dramedy that often leans towards drama –- beats previous record holder "30 Rock" by one nomination.
Elsewhere on the ballot, it's clear that the absence of HBO juggernaut "Succession" has left a void in the drama category, one that several shows are vying to fill. Period pieces "The Gilded Age" and "The Crown" put up a good showing, while sci-fi shows "Fallout" and "3 Body Problem" also found a spot in the Best Drama Category.

Baby Reindeer actress Nava Mau has made history with her brand new Emmy nomination.
Mau was nominated for best supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie on Wednesday, becoming the first Latina trans nominee in this category. She is nominated alongside co-star Jessica Gunning as well as Dakota Fanning (Ripley), Lily Gladstone (Under the Bridge), Aja Naomi King (Lessons in Chemistry), Diane Lane (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans) and Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country).
Baby Reindeer follows Richard Gadd’s Donny Dunn, a struggling comedian who encounters a lonely woman at the bar where he works. Indigenous actresses Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis have made history with their first Primetime Emmy nominations.
On Wednesday, Gladstone and Reis received nominations in the supporting actress in a limited series category for their roles in Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” and HBO/Max’s “True Detective: Night Country.” This major recognition marks the first time Indigenous women have been nominated for acting Emmys, and they are only the second and third Indigenous actors ever to be recognized in the 76-year history of the television awards.

The upcoming nominations for the best in television have been announced. The list of this year’s nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmys has been announced today by actors Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale in Hollywood. This year’s event has a rare distinction of taking place less than a year after the last event, which had been postponed to January of this year due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes that lasted for a bigger part of the summer and fall in 2023. Last year’s Emmys included winners from such shows as The Bear, Abbott Elementary and HBO’s massively popular series Succession. The ceremony is set to take place on September 15, exactly eight months after the 75th Primetime Emmys were presented on Fox. The Hollywood Reporter has listed the nominations for this year, so here are the 2024 Emmy nominees:

Two Emmy Award ceremonies in one year? The TV industry is going through a lot right now, but there’s something to be said for the shorter interval between Emmy celebrations in 2024 while awards season catches up with the timeline of 2023’s Hollywood strikes. January’s Emmy Awards honored television shows that completed their seasons between June 2022 and May 2023, and September’s ceremony will pick up right after that, with eligible shows premiering between June 2023 and May 2024.

Lily Gladstone won her first Golden Globe earlier this year for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon.
In a recent interview, the actress compared the event to the Squid Game.

So it’s just a mad scramble, and then that’s the time when you get to jam and meet idols like Meryl Streep. But of course, that part is not that bad.”
