Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” — starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega and Willem Dafoe — will open the upcoming Venice Film Festival.
Burton’s follow-up to his 1988 comedy-horror classic, in which Keaton returns as the foul-mouthed, shape-shifting ghoul, will world premiere out-of-competition on Aug. 28 at the Lido’s Palazzo del Cinema with talent in tow. The hotly anticipated new “Beetlejuice” chapter releases in the U.S. on Sept. 6 via Warner Bros. and will launch internationally starting Sept. 4.
"Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” sees three generations of the Deetz clan move back into their Winter River home after a sudden death in the family. When Lydia’s (Ryder) rebellious teen daughter Astrid (Ortega) discovers a portal to the afterlife hidden in the basement, the name of the mischievous spirit Beetlejuice is inevitably repeated three times, inviting him to wreak havoc in the Deetz family home once again.

Daniel Brühl is getting back behind the camera to direct “Break,” a biopic about the tennis champion Gottfried von Cramm whose rise to stardom in the 1930s saw him face off with the Nazi regime in his native Germany.
“All Quiet on the Western” front star Felix Kammerer will lead the feature, which reunites the actor, Bruhl and the team behind the Oscar-winning WWI drama. “Break” is based on a screenplay by Hossein Amini from Marshall Jon Fisher’s “A Terrible Splendor: Three Extraordinary Men, a World Poised for War, and the Greatest Tennis Match Ever Played.”
The Ink Factory (“The Pigeon Tunnel,” “The Night Manager”) and their partners Marc Platt and Adam Siegel for Marc Platt Productions are teaming with Malte Grunert for Amusement Park (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) and Edward Berger (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) for Nine Hours on the picture, which will be told in German and English.

Disney and Pixar’s latest set new records at the box office last weekend as ‘Inside Out 2’ became the fastest film to reach $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales, outperforming the original film’s $858 million tally in 2015. The animated sequel joins 53 other films to reach that milestone and surpassed 2022’s ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ and 2008’s ‘The Dark Knight’ with $1.01 billion in revenue.
See IMDb’s full list of billion dollar movies, based on data from BoxOfficeMojo.
In other box office news, ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ exceeded expectations in its opening weekend. The prequel to 2018’s ‘A Quiet Place’ finished with $53 million, the best opening weekend of the franchise. Meanwhile, Kevin Costner’s western epic ‘Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1’ opened to $11 million. The film’s disappointing start doesn’t bode well for the director’s planned four-film series, the second installment of which is scheduled to release in mid-August.

John Wick filmmaker Chad Stahelski is set to produce an English-language remake of the action thriller Kill for Roadside Attractions.
Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, who wrote and directed the 2023 Indian Hindi-language film, is on board for the same duties for the remake. The original Kill movie took place during a train trip to New Delhi, and saw a pair of commandos battle an army of bandits. It to get a U.S. release this weekend, starting July 4.
“Just when the stakes couldn’t get any higher, the train hurtles into chaos as a gang of 40 blade-wielding bandits storms in. Amrit and his friend employ their combat skills to protect the passengers. The train’s confines transform into a claustrophobic battleground, where martial arts meet mayhem,” the official synopsis from the producers states.
The Bollywood version of Kill is produced by Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain.

A great ending can be the hardest thing for a writer. For Robert Towne — who died Tuesday, having written and reshaped some of the most important films of the 1970s — finding the best way to wrap up a film was a career-long challenge. In the script that earned him an Oscar, the downbeat “Forget it, Jake — it’s Chinatown” finale was famously Roman Polanski’s idea.
And yet, there’s undeniable poetry in Towne’s passing: The Oscar winner died 50 years (and two weeks) after “Chinatown” opened, basking in the fresh round of appreciation that the half-century anniversary brought. Towne was a natural raconteur whose stories were every bit as rich as his screenplays — as evidenced by an in-depth Variety interview that ran last month — and whose best writing often went uncredited.
For those who weren’t around to have witnessed Towne’s transformative impact on American cinema in the 1970s,...

Spain’s Onza Americas, behind “Isla Brava,” a hit on TelevisaUnivision streamer ViX, and Mexico’s BH5 Studios, behind a brace of Mexican blockbuster movies, have closed a TV series development-production agreement.
The strategic alliance rolls off Onza Americas, BH5 Studios’ and Rodrigo Trujillo’s collaboration on production of mystery series “Isla Brava,” which bowed on ViX in May, becoming its most-watched series during its first few weeks.
The partners are now working on a second season of “Isla Brava” for ViX. The larger strategic deal was reached during its filming, Onza and BH5 Group said Wednesday.
The companies are now co-developing a second series, “an exciting drama that explores the complex world of addictions,” they said in a press statement.

Famously press shy, but often going an extra mile in order to shock, Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier has been a mischievous and frustrating spirit who tormented arthouse audiences as much as he teased them. But the provocateur-in-chief is now too established to still be considered an enfant terrible.
Von Trier’s 40 years in the film business are now to be celebrated by South Korea’s leading cinema chain Cj-cgv in a two-week retrospective that kicks off on July 10.
The multiplex giant is dedicating 15 of its art-house screens nationwide to playing 12 von Trier titles, including his debut feature, 1984-release “The Elements of Crime.” The film was part of his so-called “trauma trilogy” and was followed by “Epidemic” and “Europa.”
The showcase will continue with his 1996 Cannes Grand Jury prize-winner “Breaking the Waves” and “Idiots,” an emblem of his Dogma 95 back-to-basics filmmaking manifesto, and “Dancer in the Dark,” which won von...

Swinton almost, but not quite, rescues this film by SNL star Julio Torres with its Wes Anderson-esque onslaught of cutesy kookiness
An explosion of pass-agg hipster quirkiness is what’s offered here, an everything-everywhere-all-at-onceuniverse of cutesy vulnerability and pseudo-childlike ersatz charm. Salvadorian-American comic and SNL alumnus Julio Torres, 37, writes, directs, co-produces and stars as Alejandro, an immigrant Salvadorian kid in the US, desperately trying to keep his visa and follow his dream of being a toy designer.
Incarnating a kind of offbeat creativity, gentle and innocent Alejandro walks with a weird marionette-bobbing motion and wears his backpack while indoors. His life changes when he gets a sort-of assistant job to the imperious and impossibly demanding Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton), whose artist husband, Bobby (RZA), has just submitted to cryogenic freezing, leaving her with the job of guarding his legacy and curating his first quasi-posthumous solo show.

International rights to “Dreams,” the next film from Mexican filmmaker Michel Franco, whose “Memory” competed at Venice last year, will be sold by his regular partner The Match Factory.
“I usually work with The Match Factory, and we have an ongoing collaboration,” he tells Variety at Karlovy Vary Film Festival. “So, yeah, I like to stick with people [I know]. Why change when things are working out? It’s a great company. And I have certain distributors in certain countries that keep buying my films. And that’s, I think, how you build audiences.”
He says that he is still editing the film, so it may not be ready for Venice. “I don’t think it would be ready. I wouldn’t want to rush it. And I’m here [in Karlovy Vary]. I’m not obsessed with rushing [to finish films].”
"Dreams” will star Jessica Chastain, who also headlined “Memory,” as well as Rupert Friend and Isaac Hernández.

Variety is debuting the trailer (above) for Ivana Gloria’s feature debut “Chlorophyll” (Clorofilla), which will receive its international premiere Wednesday as part of the Proxima Competition at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
The film starts with a young girl, Maia, dashing through the undergrowth in a moonlit wood, her heart racing in sync with the rhythm of the natural world. The night air is thick with anticipation as she seeks refuge within the arms of nature.
Now grown into a woman, Maia feels an inexplicable attraction toward the trees, flowers, and the very essence of the natural world. Teo, a shy young man with secrets hidden in his greenhouse, becomes her companion. Together, Maia and Teo navigate the transition from human form to becoming one with nature — an understanding forged through friendship, attraction, and a love that transcends both flesh and foliage.

Skarsgård and his son Gustaf sparkle in Ran Huang’s rarefied film, but can’t rescue this weirdly hallucinatory murder mystery from falling flat
This intense psychological drama has a squid in the sky problem. Specifically it’s that, by its halfway point, Ran Huang’s rarefied Scandinavian crime feature has fully established a predilection for spooky visual motifs, including eerie establishing shots and nocturnal scenes so murky it’s hard to know what’s going on. And then seemingly out of nowhere, after a particularly emotional moment, there’s a cut to a forest treeline where some kind of cephalopod is floating in the sky, tentacles waving like one of those plastic “sky dancers” often seen in American car dealerships’ parking lots. Is it supposed to be a hallucination of the main character, Mats Lake (Gustaf Skarsgård), a troubled psychiatric patient who has recently confessed to a string of murders?...

“The Godfather, Part III” is universally regarded as the disappointing third sibling of “The Godfather” franchise, but outside of unofficially ending Sofia Coppola‘s acting career, it is known for one famous line. At a pivotal moment in the film, Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), mutters, “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.” That phrase is more than appropriate to describe the dance between Shari Redstone and Skydance Media over control of the studio that released the Francis Ford Coppola drama, Paramount.

The film’s writers are Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (“Deadpool & Wolverine”). Producers include Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger, as well as Andrew Muscato, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese.

Marvel fans are expecting a ton of mind-blowing cameos in the upcoming “Deadpool and Wolverine,” but one returning X-Men actor has already been revealed: Aaron Stanford as Pyro. The actor popped up in the official “Deadpool and Wolverine” trailer, much to the delight of fans. Stanford debuted as John Allerdyce, aka the mutant Pyro, in 2003’s “X2: X-Men United” and reprised the role in 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand.” He’s now back after an 18-year break and “very happy” with the results.
“I was just very happy to even have a costume,” Stanford said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly about his return as Pyro. “In the original ‘X-Men’ films, Pyro gets really shortchanged in terms of a costume.”
“In ‘X2,’ we start off with Pyro in Xavier’s School for Gifted Mutants,” he explained. “The Swat team bursts in in the middle of the night and we have to flee.

Murphy’s maverick cop – and his theme music – are back to fight corruption, but four decades on there’s little energy to enliven their formulaic reunion
Eddie Murphy isn’t finished yet – as he proved with his barnstormer of a performance as Blaxploitation pioneer Rudy Ray Moore in Dolemite Is My Name. But there’s something a bit tired and formulaic about this further go-around for his iconic Detroit cop Axel Foley from the Beverly Hills Cop action-comedy franchise which 40 years ago made Murphy an explosive Hollywood star – and whose catchy Axel F theme became an 80s anthem, duly revived here. He’s back for the fourth film, yet again leaving his Detroit turf to be a scruffy fish-out-of-water in the hilariously chi-chi world of Beverly Hills, yet again wryly noticing from the wheel of his car, on the way in, a montage of all the crazy California stuff, including...

Nostalgia, when it comes to reviving an old movie series, can be axiomatic. Every so often you see a genuine great piece of nostalgia — like “Creed” or the 2009 “Star Trek” reboot or the 2014 “Godzilla.” But then there’s the kind of nostalgia represented by “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.” Plotted like a generic police-corruption thriller, lit with cruddy efficiency, pausing every 10 minutes or so for a “light” moment, the movie is no “Beverly Hills Cop.” But it’s better than the ballistic noise orgy that was “Beverly Hills Cop II” (1986) or the clunky retro mess of “Beverly Hills Cop III” (1994), so I guess we should be grateful. And I suspect that a lot of viewers who grew up in the ’80s will be.
Let’s be clear, though, about the level of nostalgia this movie is aiming for. “Axel F.” is studded with moments that are designed to be time-machine triggers,...

Eddie Murphy was only 23 when "Beverly Hills Cop" arrived in theaters in 1984, and the action comedy helped make him a superstar. Murphy's raw talent was already apparent thanks to his work on "Saturday Night Live," a show he joined when he as 19. His feature debut in Walter Hill's 1982 flick "48 Hrs." took him even further, as did his follow-up movie, 1983's "Trading Places". But "Beverly Hills Cop," directed by Martin Brest, helped solidify that Murphy was the real deal; a bonafide movie star. It was a mega-hit, and almost immediately made trash-talking Detroit cop Axel Foley an iconic character. Murphy was so cool, so confident, so suave that he took the character to extreme heights, taking a high concept pitch — what if a tough city cop ended up in posh Beverly Hills? — and creating movie magic in the process. Like Eddie Murphy, Axel Foley was young, hip, and in-demand.

A renegade cop who refuses to play by the rules or pay any mind to the ungodly amount of collateral damage he causes in the name of saving Los Angeles from its own systemic rot, Axel Foley makes so much sense as the hero of a Netflix movie that it’s hard to believe the company didn’t invent him itself. Maybe that helps to explain why “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” feels sturdier and more self-possessed than your average straight-to-streaming legacy sequel, including Eddie Murphy’s own “Coming 2 America.” Here is a story of — and about — the diminished but enduring power of a classic brand in modern Hollywood (or at least the greater Hollywood area), and the moral of that story boils down to a simple idea: Familiarity is such a powerful force that it can inspire people to forgive pretty much anything.

Paramount and Skydance will merge after all.
In a huge twist just before the July 4 holiday, David Ellison’s Skydance Media has reached a tentative agreement with Shari Redstone to buy the holding company National Amusements and in turn merge Paramount Global with Skydance, IndieWire has learned, and according to reports in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. The deal has now been referred to a special committee appointed by Paramount’s board to review and approve the deal.
It wasn’t more than a couple weeks ago that talks between Redstone and Skydance fell apart at the finish line. Skydance sounded like it had moved on. Just yesterday, a new bidder emerged, billionaire Barry Diller. The craziest saga in M&a corporate Hollywood news keeps getting crazier.

Writer-director Robert Towne, an Oscar winner for his original script for “Chinatown” and an acknowledged master of the art of screenwriting, has died. He was 89.
Towne died Monday at his home in Los Angeles, publicist Carrie McClure said in a statement.
During a long career that began in the 1960s, when he went to work as an actor and writer for B-movie director Roger Corman, Towne became one of the most sought-after script doctors in movie history, called on time and again to solve structural problems and create great moments for other people’s films.
Towne came to prominence in the 1970s with three critical and commercial hits released within a 14-month period: “The Last Detail” (1973), “Chinatown” (1974) and “Shampoo” (1975). All three screenplays were Oscar- nominated, with “Chinatown” winning in its year.
Hired as a “special consultant” by Warren Beatty for 1967’s “Bonnie and Clyde,” Towne restructured the picture to dramatize the outlaws’ impending doom.

While a motion picture screenplay is by nature imperfectible — and time, tide, and taste will have their say — the Oscar-winning script written for 1974’s “Chinatown” by Robert Towne, who passed away Monday, July 1, at age 89 according to his publicist (via THR), makes its own case to be cited as perfect an example of the form as we may ever see. That it was the first original (as opposed to an adaptation) that Towne ever authored, coming along at the age of 40, is itself remarkable.
It’s no coincidence that his great friend Jack Nicholson, an artistic comrade in arms since they met as neophytes in a Hollywood acting class, was the center of “Chinatown’s” dark beauty and also of the ribald, corrosive and mordantly funny Towne script for 1973’s “The Last Detail.” Another friend, Warren Beatty, was the centerpiece of 1975’s “Shampoo,” which joined the previous two to notch...

In a holiday week shocker, Skydance Media and Shari Redstone’s National Amusements Inc. have quietly renewed acquisition talks and have reached a tentative agreement to acquire Paramount Global.
That deal will now be reviewed by Paramount Global’s special committee of its board of directors that has steered the media giant through its roller coaster ride of M&a activity and speculation since late last year. The new pact with David Ellison’s Skydance Media and Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Capital is believed to include a 45-day period in which Paramount and Nai, which owns Redstone’s controlling share in Paramount, have the right to shop around for a bidder to match the Skydance terms.
News of the renewed talks was first reported Tuesday by the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

Candle Media, the fledging media company backed by private equity player Blackstone, is undergoing a restructure in order to cut costs.
Founded in 2021 by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, the venture made several splashy acquisitions – including Reese Witherspoon’s production label Hello Sunshine – at the offset. Flash forward three years, and free-spending content buyers have cratered back to earth (along with their individual stock prices).
Variety has confirmed that Mayer and Staggs have moved to consolidate their production businesses into two verticals: live-action production will now fall under Sarah Harden, CEO of Hello Sunshine, who will also retain her title at Witherspoon’s shop; and animation will now exist solely within Candle’s profitable MoonBug, the label behind family juggernaut “CocoMelon,” which airs on Netflix.
Details of cost cuts and potential job losses were not immediately clear. Mayer and Staggs first disclosed the new structure at a Semafor event last week.

While last month saw typically dramatic actor/writer/director Viggo Mortensen share his TCM picks in honor of the release of his western romance film “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” the beloved channel has recruited a filmmaker with a more comedic voice to spearhead its July slate. Having produced for film and television since the early ’90s, Judd Apatow made his directorial debut in 2005 with the critical and cultural smash hit, “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.” He’s helped build the careers of Seth Rogen, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Kristen Wiig, and many others, while also honoring the careers of those who’ve passed with HBO documentaries “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling” and “George Carlin’s American Dream.”
Apatow’s first picks for the month harken back to his youth, with George Lucas’ coming-of-age hang-out flick “American Grafitti” (1973) airing on July 4 at 3:45am Et and Richard Brooks’ adaptation of Judith Rossner...

Just yesterday, it was revealed that Julianne Moore, Milly Alcock, and Meghann Fahy were joining forces to work on a new Netflix series titled “Sirens.” And now, the next day, we know which two men will join the trio of ladies in what is becoming a kind of all-star cast.
According to Netflix, Glenn Howerton and Kevin Bacon have joined the cast of the streaming series, “Sirens.” The series follows a woman’s attempt to free her younger sister from the clutches of a creepy, cult-like job run by a powerful older woman.

It’s wild to think about this now, especially as people are predicting massive opening weekend numbers for “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Still, there was a time, shortly after the Disney acquisition of Fox, when people thought the “Deadpool” franchise was dead. Thoughts about how Disney would want it to be PG-13 or wouldn’t want to inherit the universe that was created? Basically, people thought there might not be another ‘Deadpool’ film. And one of those people was none other than Ryan Reynolds.

Kevin Costner's long-awaited Western epic "Horizon: An American Saga -- Chapter 1" hit theaters this past weekend. This was a true passion project for the "Dances With Wolves" director, who put around $38 million of his own money, in addition to securing lots of other financing from mystery investors, to get the film made. It's the first in a planned four-film saga, with Warner Bros. set to release "Chapter 2" in mere weeks on August 16. Unfortunately, in the early going, this experiment has not panned out financially.
Opening against "A Quiet Place: Day One," the first installment in Costner's new franchise was buried. "Horizon" opened to a mere $11 million domestically, placing at number three on the charts for the weekend, scarcely above "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" ($10.3 million), which was in its fourth weekend of release. It certainly doesn't help that "Inside Out 2" has remained a juggernaut, passing $1 billion worldwide...

A playful take on the dishy celebrity cameo, John Cena’s part in “The Bear” is an acquired taste.

“Anybody seen a ghost?” asks Sammy, his hulking frame filling the restaurant side-door.
It’s a jarring scene that has drawn cheers as well as criticism online. Some audiences are delighted to see Cena in their favorite TV show. By box office and general reputation, he’s a crowd favorite if there ever was one, even among non-wrestling fans. Others, however, have...

James Gunn’s “Superman” is celebrating both the legacy of the Man of Steel and the actor who originated him on the big screen with a special cameo.
The late Christopher Reeve experienced his greatest commercial success playing Superman and his alter ego Clark Kent in the first four Superman movies. Now, his youngest son, journalist and ABC News correspondent Will Reeve, will make a cameo playing a TV reporter in the upcoming DC Studios movie.
The project is currently filming in Cleveland, Ohio, where local reporters (via Cleveland.com) captured all the behind-the-scenes action, including Reeve’s appearance on set during a major scene. David Corenswet stars as Superman in the character’s latest revival, written and directed by Gunn, the co-head of Warner Bros.-owned DC Studios. The film arrives in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Recasting happens all the time. Tragedy sometimes strikes, like in the case of Professor Albus Dumbledore in the "Harry Potter" series, where Michael Gambon assumed the role following the passing of the original performer, Richard Harris. Oftentimes, recasting is a result of scheduling conflicts, like when "May December" breakout star Charles Melton took over the role of Reggie Mantle on "Riverdale" due to original actor Ross Butler's scheduling conflicts with "13 Reasons Why." And sometimes a character is recast simply because they weren't right for the role, as was famously the case with Eric Stoltz, who was replaced by Michael J. Fox after six weeks of shooting "Back to the Future."
In all of these instances, fans were well aware of the recastings as they happened, but once a person has been playing a role long enough, audiences sometimes forget they were ever recast in the first place. This...

One of the biggest questions surrounding “Deadpool & Wolverine” isn’t about how popular the film is going to be—early forecasts show the film being massive—but instead about who is going to show up in the movie from the old era of 20th Century Fox and Marvel. Will Ben Affleck show up as Daredevil? Will Chris Evans appear as the Human Torch from the old “Fantastic Four” films?

"Bridgerton,” “Bridgerton,” “Bridgerton.” That’s what Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular TV (English) list looks like now.
Season 3 of the Shondaland period drama has now entered the streamer’s all-time list at number 10, booting “Baby Reindeer” and joining “Bridgerton” Seasons 1 and 2 on the leaderboard.
"Bridgerton” is the only series with three seasons on Netflix’s top 10 all-time list. “Stranger Things” is well-represented with Seasons 3 and 4, but its first two seasons came out before Netflix began to share viewership statistics.
Like many of its biggest shows, Netflix split “Bridgerton” Season 3 into two parts. Part 1 debuted on May 16; Part 2 launched on June 13.
Netflix’s top 10 is based on number of views over a TV season or a film’s first 91 days of availability — both “Bridgerton” Season 3 halves still have plenty of time to rack up more views in pursuit of the preceding seasons. “Baby Reindeer” has just a few days left before Netflix’s self-imposed cutoff.
