Pioneering DJ Laurent Garnier on Documentary About His Life and Evolution of Dance Music (Exclusive)
Gabin Rivoire’s documentary “Laurent Garnier: Off the Record,” which explores the origins and rise of techno music through the eyes of one of its pioneers, is set to world premiere on May 7 in front of a live audience at the Cph:dox festival in Copenhagen. Anton, which is handling world sales, has released its first official trailer exclusively to Variety. Garnier, one of the world’s leading DJs and a well-respected music producer, talks to Variety from his home in France, which is still in lockdown, preventing him from traveling to the premiere, about how the film evolved, his love of techno, and how the pandemic caused him to stop listening to techno music for the first time in more than 30 years.

Never mind the holidays; dealing with family can be stressful any time of year. Birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, or just a mandatory visit to a forgotten aunt you haven’t seen in 15 years can all hold their share of tension and misery. But at least be thankful you’re not part of the Merrye clan, the family at the center of Jack Hill’s Spider Baby (1967), a quirky yet clever examination of the prototypical horror tribe that influenced the likes of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and The Hills Have Eyes (1977).

Initially in charge of propaganda within an oppressive South African government, Helga (Malisa Longo) is demoted to being in charge of looking after a group of recently captured rebel female prisoners. She rules Chateau Stilberg with an iron fist whilst having an insatiable appetite for both prisoners and soldiers alike. Unfortunately for her, not all the prisoners want to play along and this naturally frustrates Helga on a regular basis. One of the prisoners under her watchful eye is the spunky and feisty Elisabeth Vogel (Patrizia Gori), daughter of a leftist lawyer who is seemingly the government’s biggest enemy and prime target. When Helga discovers this, she naturally intends to use young Elisabeth as bait, but eventually starts to fall for her.

It’s a powerful plea against the death penalty, but also an Oscar bid for a fiery actress. And don’t forget the cool jazz music score. On top of this Robert Wise adds a formerly- taboo sequence, a realistic depiction of an execution in the gas chamber. Of such things were gritty, hard-hitting reputations made.

Forget the proletarian messages, this Italian Neorealist classic is really an exploitation film about ogling brazen, buxom babes in short-shorts, up to their knees in a rice paddy. The 2014 Image Expo helped partially prove my theory that there is no longer a Big Two in comics, but a Big Three. At the Expo, a plethora of new titles stretching across different genres were announced along with news about popular creators, like Grant Morrison, Ed Brubaker, Jock, and Kyle Higgins working on new projects. This article is a completely subjective primer about which Image books comic book fans should look out for in 2014.

There Will Actually Be A Comic Book Called Bitch Planet.
Kelly Sue DeConnick is rocking it at Marvel with Captain Marvel and Avengers Assemble as well as at Image with Pretty Deadly, but apparently that’s not enough for her, as she took to the stage to announce a collaboration with Valentine De Landro about female prisoners in space kicking ass and taking names. Yes, I am pandering to the lowest common denominator again – this time bad taste movies. There is something that satisfies my brain when I watch something revolting and obscene. I may hate the image, but I get a perverse sense of satisfaction from having watched it.
Some bad taste movies are just plain weird and disturbing as you shall see in my list. Some of them are wet yourself hilarious. And some of them give you food for thought – they are provocative in their poor taste.
As disgusting as some of these movies are, they deserve to be celebrated as bad taste movies – a particular niche that many of us enjoy for our own perverse reasons…

Italy has frequently been at the forefront of European cinema as a trendsetter in the annals of exploitation cinema. Without Italy, we wouldn’t have the Mondo film or Gialli. Who else would have supplied us with Amazonian cannibals, nasty Nazis or demented nuns in such a pleasing manner?
Italy has always been awash with cinematic talent. And it is a country that doesn’t mind doing sexy, doing off beat, to be a little daring. The amount of wonderful exploitation directors has ensured that Italy has produced some of the most amazing horror films, cult oddities, documentaries and pornos.
I have listed the foremost Italian exploitation film directors that I can think of.. If you have a particular Italian director that you admire that I have missed out, please let’s have a discussion below.

(This article contains some minor spoilers for Django Unchained and be warned that most of the clips included are Nsfw)
Like many of Tarantino’s previous films Django Unchained is filled to the brim with film references. Below I’ve attempted to guide you through some of these references and links to other films.
I’ve only seen the film once at a screening and am sure that given the opportunity to sit down with the film on Blu-ray I will undoubtedly find even more, so the following is in no way definitive but hopefully provides some answers to for those wondering what Tarantino was referencing in Django Unchained. Also, most importantly, hopefully it will lead you to check out some of the films in question.
The most obvious film reference in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained is right there in the title. Django was a 1966 ‘spaghetti western’ directed by...

Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) 20th Century Fox Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
Six-year-old Hushpuppy (fearless newcomer Quvenzhané Wallis) lives in the “Bathtub,” a southern Louisiana bayou community far removed from the civilized world. Her father Wink (Dwight Henry), a poor fisherman, keeps her at arm’s length but ensures her well-being within the cultural confines of their rough-and-tumble society. Seen through the eyes of the feisty Hushpuppy, the lines between myth and reality are blurred. An impending storm coincides with the melting of the arctic ice caps (and the thawing of some mythical creatures), which changes the world of the Bathtub forever. This heartbreaking little fable came out of nowhere last summer after building some positive buzz on the festival circuit. Shot on 16mm film for under $2 million, Beasts is a true independent film: a fiercely original and moving...

Director: Steve Carver; Cirio H. Santiago
Screenplay: John William Corrington and Joyce Hooper Corrington; Miller Drake; Howard R. Cohen
Starring: Pam Greir, Margaret Markov, Pat Anderson, Lenore Kasdorf, Lyllah Torena, Ken Metcalfe, Vic Diaz, Lindsay Bloom and Tara Strohmeier; with appearances by Dick Miller and Mary Woronov
To misquote Jack Nicholson, Roger Corman released so many movies, it's no surprise some real stinkers got into theaters. And the recent Shout! Factory Roger Corman Cult Classics release, Lethal Ladies 2 Collection, is intent on proving that statement. The two-dvd set includes a single-disc presentation of The Arena, and a second disc with the double feature of Fly Me and Cover Girl Models.
The best film in the collection, 1974's The Arena (aka Naked Warriors), is little more than a retelling of Spartacus with women as gladiators. Corman decided it was the perfect vehicle for Pam Grier and Margaret Markov, following their successful...

Cult film fans rejoice! Classic revenge flick Rolling Thunder has finally been given its long-overdue release on DVD and Blu-Ray. The 1977 movie features a star cast including William Devane (Marathon Man, 24), Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive, Men in Black), and Linda Haynes (Human Experiments). Surprisingly, this is the 1977 movie’s first digital release having previously only been available on VHS.
Aside from the cast, the film has great pedigree as the screenplay was co-written by Paul Schrader shortly after he wrote Taxi Driver. Indeed, there are some clear parallels between the two stories. Like Taxi Driver, Rolling Thunder tells the story of a haunted Vietnam vet who exacts bloody vengeance on his transgressors. In this case, we follow the newly-escaped prisoner-of-war, Major Charles Raine (Devane), who has returned to a hero’s welcome in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas. Presented with a new cherry red Cadillac, a suitcase of...

No one knew exploitation cinema like Jack Hill. His resume is like a tour through sleazy '70s film history, and his collaborators like a who's who of the toughest, meanest, and sexiest stars of the era. Shout! Factory's Women in Cages Blu-ray Collection is a magnificent monument to that legacy featuring Hill's Big Doll House and The Big Bird Cage as well as Gerry De Leon's Women in Cages to round it all out. These three films may not have been the first Women in Prison films, far from it, but they brought the goods like no other films before them. If you wanted buxom broads with bad attitudes, you've got 'em in spades in this collection. Mud wrestling, shower scenes, sexual torture, and more,...

There are two main reasons that people watch Women-in-Prison (Wip) films. One is for the crazy violence, usually caused by the uprising of an oppressed group of prisoners and the wrongfully accused just trying to set things right. The other, and more prominent reason, is because of the nudity. Yes, Wip flicks are known for bare babes behind bars and that is not something they try to hide. In fact there is a film from 1980 simply called Bare Behind Bars. If anyone out there was going to give you the skinny on which of this subgenre was worth your 90 minutes I’d be willing to bet my money on Mr. Skin. As you all know this is the man behind the website you can go to for skinformation on who was in naked in what movie and to what extent. Now he has teamed up with Panik House to release...

I never thought I would see the day that the monster-on-the-loose-flick Humongous would get a DVD release, but thanks to Scorpion Releasing it’s happening! Dig on the other movies as well.

See the bewitching Katarina introduce such horror classics as The House On Sorority Row, Final Exam, The Incubus, some of them in new high definition film transfers with new extras!
Also, for the first time on DVD such films as the 80′s horror favorite Humongous, The Carpenter starring Wings Hauser (Vice Squad), The Human Experiments starring Linda Haynes, American Nightmare with Michael Ironside, The Devil Within Her starring Joan Collins, the twin-terrors of The Mark Of Cain,...

Fresh off pimping out upcoming Shout! Factory releases, here's my review of one of their recent releases. This DVD rocks!I'm going to go in reverse order on this one, because I can. Caged Heat is a fantastically entertaining American Women in Prison film. It isn't as exploitative as some of the nastier European stuff, but it is really, really fun to watch. The film stars Erica Gavin of Russ Meyer's Vixen, has a supporting role for an uncharacteristically unattractive Barbara Steele, and was directed by a very young Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia), and is a master class in how to make a movie move. The plot is an excuse to stage car chases, show women in showers, and have elaborate emotionally wrenching gun...

Why Watch? Because sometimes you’re in the mood for a Women In Prison film. The modern world isn’t too keen on these types of flicks, but at least someone is. This short has all the soap opera stylings and far-too-attractive convicts that honor the past, while utilizing the tech of today for a slight update. The acting is exactly as stiff as it needs to be without being wooden, and the existential crisis is given even more weight with the claustrophobic way that it’s all shot. What happens when a prisoner slowly spirals to the end of her mental and medical rope? What Will It Cost? Just 14 minutes of your time. Does it get better any better than that? Check out Condemned for yourself: The Laundromat (2010) Written and Directed by: Oren Shai Starring: Margaret Anne Florence, Ashlie Atkinson, and Aprella Trust us. You have time for more short films.

I long for the days when Women in Prison flicks were a dime a dozen, and although they will never be made as often as they used to, Sugar Boxx is here to bring back that sleazy goodness from long ago! Francesca ‘Kitten’ Natividad has gone back to her roots after working with Russ Meyer in the 70′s on the skinsploitation movie Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens.
Sugar Boxx hits DVD on March 15, 2011.
Sugar State Women’s Prison. An Everglades hellhole where innocent girls are forced to slave in the swamps by day then turn tricks for the warden by night. A prison camp where corruption, brutality, and sexual abuse are all part of the daily routine. But when reporter Valerie March goes undercover inside Sugar State, that’s when the powder keg really explodes! Follow Valerie through prison life – catfights, knife fights, rape, whippings, prostitution, and the “hot...

If you're not familiar with artist Alex Pardee's work, you really should be. In addition to working with Zack Snyder on his Women in Prison fantasy epic Sucker Punch, he's done some great work with the Alamo Drafthouse and Mondo including an awesome Basket Case poster/t-shirt combo. Pardee's personal work is just as impressive, like his line of prints reimagining classic horror figures including Freddy, Jason, The Fly and more (I own the first set). Now for the really fun stuff. If you live in L.A. the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City is opening 2011 with Alex Pardee's new show 'Vertigo: A Decade of Hunting Nightmares'. If you can name the last John Carpenter film, you’re a better buff than I. If you can name the last good John Carpenter film, you would say, “In the Mouth of Madness,” because that’s technically correct (the best kind of correct). Now, with The Ward, he’s driven Amber Heard crazy and tossed her into a group shower where a ghost can attack her. All of this will make more sense once you’ve seen the trailer: Women in Prison film? Ghost story? Slasher? All three? The delusional trip through the psycho ward is incredibly old ground to cover as it dates back to the first horror film ever made, however The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari did not have Amber Heard (who is contractually obligated to appear nude in every film she’s hired for (even if she’s working as the cinematographer)), and Carpenter is a man with a legacy to protect. Hopefully...

I announced this here a while ago, but the news just became more official. Arrow Video have posted the Rick Melton's custom cover art and specs for their world exclusive Blu-ray presentation of The Beyond. In my opinion, this film is Lucio Fulci's masterpiece, and while some argument can be made for Zombie Aka Zombi 2 Aka Zombie Flesh Eaters, I think this one trumps it easily. This new edition is due for release on Valentine's Day, February 14th, 2011, and would make a lovely gift! Check out the awesome specs and great custom cover art! This Amazing Edition Contains:
- 4 option reversible sleeve with original and newly commissioned artwork
- Double-sided fold-out poster
- Collector's booklet featuring an introduction to the film by Eli Roth, director of 'Cabin Fever', 'Hostel' and 'Hostel Part II', 'Beyond Bombast' and an interview with Al Cliver by author...

Obviously, the films are Arrow Video's main draw, but as I've mentioned in the previous articles, they aren't the only things worth checking out. Arrow Video has created a very specific brand and interactive collaborative structure.
One of the main factors that differentiates Arrow Video releases from the rest is the specially commissioned artwork from some of the top horror/fantasy/sleaze artists working today. Arrow Video's releases are immediately recognizable on a shelf or in a collection from the template their packaging follows. A white frame surrounding original art from one of three artists currently under their patronage
.
One of the artists currently featured in their collection is The Dude, from Dude Designs, who has contributed artwork to Jaguar Lives! and Deadly Outlaw: Rekka so far, both very solid art designs. The Dude works primarily as a graphic artist, and films are his main focus as far as I can tell.

One part of Arrow Video's collection that we have not explored are the great exploitation titles they currently offer. They don't quite qualify as Video Nasties, however, they are no less entertaining and, in some cases, important to the history of exploitation film. Unfortunately for the UK, exploitation cinema is somewhat underrepresented in the home video market. Here in the Us we have several labels solely dedicated to the proliferation and salvation of these films. The UK has not been so lucky. So, when a label like Arrow Video decides that these films are worth showing, it is certainly welcome.
In this column we'll also explore a couple of upcoming releases, including Arrow Video's first visits to the Far East to deliver some films that will surely get fans (like me) drooling!

"I had no interest in doing another documentary after 'Not Quite Hollywood,'" says Australian director Mark Hartley. It's kind of a weird statement, since I'm talking to Hartley specifically because he made another documentary, a thoroughly entertaining chronicle of American exploitation filmmaking in the Philippines called "Machete Maidens Unleashed" ("Not Quite Hollywood" focused on exploitation films from Hartley's homeland). Packed with great interviews and movie clips, edited with panache and wit, and featuring some incredible anecdotes about Roger Corman's B-movie factory of the 1970s, New World Pictures, "Machete Maidens" certainly doesn't feel like the work of a disinterested filmmaker. So how'd we get here, chatting about his film the day after a gala screening at Fantastic Fest? I asked Hartley what changed his mind, whether he thinks there are feminist messages in Women in Prison movies, and the morality of enjoying stuntwork that could have cost someone their life.

The Student Nurses (9:45 at the Ritz)
Group Marriage (Midnight at the Ritz)
Click links to buy tickets.
In the ’60s and ’70s, many fine directors got their start with Roger Corman’s microbudget operation: Coppola, Scorsese, Demme, Joe Dante, Ron Howard, Stephanie Rothman… Wait, what’s her name doing in there? Well, that’s the beginning of a long story and one that she tells best. Fortunately for us, she’ll be here on Wednesday to tell it. For many of her male counterparts it was a hop, skip and a jump to bigger things, for Stephanie Rothman, the drive-in was the end of the line. So a promising career died on the vine. The company best known for Women In Prison and biker movies gave her a shot but big Hollywood wasn’t interested in women directors so she moved on to other things.

Vol.3: Big Bad Mama
Stars: Angie Dickinson, Tom Skeritt, William Shatner, Susan Sennett, Robbie Lee | Written by William W. Norton & Frances Doel | Directed by Steve Carver | Produced by Roger Corman
Directed by Steve Carver (Lone Wolf McQuade, An Eye For An Eye), Big Bad Mama stars Angie Dickinson as Wilma, a gangster’s moll who takes control of her boyfriend’s bootlegging business following his death and becomes involved in a rollercoaster crime spree. Assisting her are two ne’er-do-wells in the form of bank robber Fred Diller (Skerritt) and conman William J. Baxter (Shatner), as well as her uncontrollable but comely daughters, Billy Jean (Sennett) and Polly (Lee).
A strange mix of exploitation movie and female empowerment flick, Big Bad Mama is a fast-paced action packed comedy that walks a fine line between over-the-top acting and plot, and a poignant tale of family love and loyalty. Mixing an abundance of nudity,...
