The last few years have not been kind to Kevin Costner. After months of controversy surrounding his Yellowstone exit, the official studio statement clashed against his reputation, turning the entire fanbase against the actor. His attempt at redressal failed badly, especially considering his initial silence on the issue, which most took as a sign of a guilty conscience.

Although Kevin Costner has moved on from the Taylor Sheridan series, controversy has followed him to the end of the line. His passion project Horizon: An American Saga, which has been 40 years in the making, fell short of audience expectations. The 7-minute-long Cannes standing ovation turned into a sneering jab in the face of the actor after Horizon sank in ratings.

Ridley Scott is leaning into the future of filmmaking — or at least the future of rhino fight scenes.
The auteur behind the upomcing “Gladiator 2” told Empire that he believes Hollywood has to “embrace” AI, especially given how necessary the technology has become in post-production and special effects. For a particular scene in “Gladiator 2” where Paul Mescal’s character battles a rhino, Scott said his team built an “eight-wheeled, digitally driven” rhino that is plastic and practical. Mescal, per Empire, was even able to climb aboard, and the beast down to its skin and shape looks terrific.
“Computerization and AI — you have to embrace it,” Scott said. “I can have a computer read every molecule and wrinkle on a rhino and then cut it on a thick piece of plastic, absolutely as a rhino’s body, which is then tailored to a skeleton shape.”

A filming miniature of a Y-Wing Starfighter helmed by Gold Leader, who aided Luke Skywalker in destroying the Death Star in 1977’s “Star Wars: A New Hope,” sold for a whopping $1.55 million Friday at Heritage’s July Entertainment Auction.
Another highlight of the collection was a Princess Leia gold bikini costume from Jabba the Hutt’s scenes in 1983’s “Return of the Jedi,” which sold for $175,000. The ensemble includes seven pieces from Industrial Light & Magic chief sculptor Richard Miller’s collection–a bikini brassiere, bikini plates, hip rings, an armlet and bracelet.
The Y-Wing that sold on Friday is one of just two “hero” (meaning that it was used in close ups) Y-Wing filming miniatures built by the Ilm visual effects team. Welcome to the new era of Brazilian Cinema! The newest Netflix original film ‘Bionic’ (‘Biônicos’ in Portuguese) takes place in Brazil in the year 2035, where a highly technology dominated world is the backdrop of the dystopian thriller written by Josefina Trotta and directed by Afonso Poyart. In a reality where bionic prosthetics dictate the sporting scene, the rivalry between the Santos sisters takes them down a dark and mischievous path. Maria Santos (Jessica Córes) dreams of competing against her bionic sister, Gabi Santos (Gabz), but a just competition is impossible when Gabi has indefinitely enhanced ability with her bionic prosthetic leg, even against a real prodigy like Maria. In a world where Paralympic athletes with their bionic prosthetics have superhuman stardom and completely overshadow non-bionic athletes, a fair play between them is simply beyond the bounds of possibility. To achieve her goal and be the best at Long Jump and...

Rutger Hauer and Ridley Scott only made one film together, the 1982 classic Blade Runner – but Hauer went on to make two more movies that were scripted by Blade Runner screenwriter David Webb Peoples; the 1985 medieval fantasy film Ladyhawke (where Peoples went uncredited) and the apocalyptic 1989 film The Blood of Heroes, which Peoples also directed. Now War Is Hell: Making Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth and Soldier: From Script to Screen author Danny Stewart has dug into the making of The Blood of Heroes with his new book Saluting The Blood of Heroes: Behind the Apocalyptic Film, and copies are available for purchase on Amazon!
Also known as The Salute of the Jugger, The Blood of Heroes has the following synopsis: In a future where most of mankind and technology is wiped out, six people travel from place to place playing a brutal form of football with a dog skull.

Lots of things make Ridley Scott grumpy. Critics of "Blade Runner" make him grumpy. All of those millennials not watching "The Last Duel" make him grumpy. The idea of making "wizard films" for Disney makes him grumpy. The world seems like one big inconvenience to the octogenarian, to the extent that it's not really accurate to say these things make him grumpy. Much like Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner in "The Avengers," the secret to Scott's remarkably durable crotchetiness is that he's always grumpy.
None of this, of course, takes away from the man's equally remarkable filmography. While there are several dubious entries on that list, anyone who made "Blade Runner" is, in my opinion, unimpeachably brilliant. Still, I implore you to take a quick peek at Scott's Wikipedia page and marvel at the sheer level of irascibility emanating from his photo in what is surely the most accurate visual...

The 1980s was a golden era for science fiction cinema, giving birth to iconic films like Blade Runner, The Terminator, Back to the Future and many more. Yet, amidst these titans of the genre, there lies a hidden gem that has often been overlooked… Ice Pirates. Released in 1984, Ice Pirates combines elements of space opera, comedy, and adventure into a uniquely entertaining package that deserves more recognition than it has historically received.
One of the most compelling aspects of Ice Pirates is its fearless blending of genres. It doesn’t confine itself to the serious, often dystopian tone of many sci-fi contemporaries. Instead, it infuses humor and swashbuckling adventure into its narrative. This hybrid approach creates a distinct tone that sets it apart from other films of the era.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is launching two marquee exhibitions for Fall 2024.
AMPAS’ Los Angeles Museum will host both the “Color in Motion: Chromatic Explorations of Cinema” and “Cyberpunk: Envisioning Possible Futures Through Cinema” to celebrate the aesthetics of famed features.
“Color in Motion” includes technologies from Technicolor and Eastman Color, and displays objects such as the iconic ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz” (1939), as designed by Gilbert Adrian; the eponymous ballet slippers from “The Red Shoes” (1948) designed by Hein Heckroth; Kim Novak’s green dress from “Vertigo” (1958), designed by Edith Head; a Wonka chocolate bar from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (1971); and a blue ensemble worn by Jaime Foxx as Django in “Django Unchained” (2012).
“Color in Motion” spans 130 years, from 1894 to 2024, and is organized into six main themes: Choreographing Color, Technologies and Spectacles, Monochrome Film Installation, Color as Character, Experimentation, and Color Arcade. A recreation of...

Horror movies are a dime a dozen, so it's imperative that we celebrate the good ones when they arrive. Regrettably, audiences often miss out on a novel new entry to the genre due to bad or misleading marketing, poorly timed release dates, or an inability to grasp a unique concept, causing a potential blockbuster to flame out at the box office. On many occasions, such pictures will earn solid reviews from critics and go on to achieve cult status thanks to solid word-of-mouth. In other instances, however, many impeccably made horror pictures needlessly fade into obscurity after bombing in theaters and never find the success they deserve.
Well, I'm here to put an end to the madness. I've scoured the World Wide Web and located a handful of horror box office bombs with great RottenTomatoes scores in dire need of more attention. Some of these entries, like John Carpenter's classic "The Thing,...

Rian Johnson's "Looper" is not your standard issue time travel flick. It's also a neo-noir crime yarn that veers into a man-on-the-lam thriller before unexpectedly integrating elements of telekinetic horror. It's a full 118-minute meal that more than satisfies on every subsequent viewing. And while you can easily rattle off its numerous movie influences, the film that most inspired Johnson's crafting of the narrative, particularly as it settles into its second act, is a quieter kind of genre tale.
Most moviegoers probably didn't anticipate what was sold as a Bruce Willis sci-fi action movie to head off in so many surprising directions, but Johnson has been infusing his films with all kinds of unexpected flavors since his critically acclaimed debut "Brick" –- and, frankly, even most cinephiles familiar with Johnson's oeuvre up to that point were caught off-guard by the younger version of the movie's protagonist (Joseph Gordon-Levitt...

The capacity for sci-fi to pack imaginative exuberance, political richness, and sheer pulpy excitement into a dazzling cinematic adventure has been yielding masterpieces since the early days of the film medium, and it has allowed directors from Stanley Kubrick to Andrei Tarkovsky to Lizzie Borden to Denis Villeneuve to create some of their finest, most enduring work. At the same time, big-budget sci-fi can be a tough sell -- the greater the worlds and setpieces and ideas being put forth, the higher the risk of financial underperformance.
Unsurprisingly, film history is peppered with sci-fi movies that flopped upon release, only for them to be reappraised and re-emerge as cult favorites years later. That was true of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis," the grandfather of all go-for-broke sci-fi monuments, and it has been true of countless ambitious and unique cinematic visions in the century since. No matter how hard the movies below may have flopped,...

Films like Guardians of the Galaxy and James Cameron’s Avatar franchise gave actor Zoe Saldaña a reputation for doing sci-fi movies. And initially, it was a reputation she wasn’t sure would do well for her career.

Reader, you have been lied to! Film history is littered with unfairly maligned classics, whether critics were too eager to review the making of rather than the finished product, or they suffered from underwhelming ad campaigns or general disinterest. Let’s revise our takes on some of these films from wrongheaded to the correct opinion.
When Ridley Scott‘s “Blade Runner” was released in the summer of 1982, it met with lukewarm responses from audiences and, though there were outliers, largely mixed reviews. (Pauline Kael’s snide dismissal stuck in Scott‘s craw to the point that he continued to quote it in interviews 40 years later.) Scott had the last laugh, as it only took around 10 years for everyone to come around and acknowledge “Blade Runner” as a classic, and given how wrong the critics were initially one might think they would be careful about underestimating Scott again. Yet when Scott...

Ridley Scott has made some of the greatest films that have stood the test of time and are celebrated today. The filmmaker is behind classics such as Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Thelma & Louise, etc, and at 86, he continues to churn out epic films mounted on a huge scale. The director is also known for being a perfectionist and is very particular about the look of his films.

One of his most divisive films was the theatrical version of Kingdom of Heaven. Audiences expected the historical epic to be on the level of Gladiator but it lacked depth and characterization. Several crucial scenes that the director wanted to put were cut from the theatrical version. However, the director’s cut version of the film became a significant improvement over it.

Ridley Scott had an entirely different idea for Gladiator 2. When the first film became a huge success, even winning Oscars, Scott and team planned a sequel film by retconning Crowe’s death in the film. Scott will never reveal the story that Nick Cave had written for the earlier sequel plans. However, he explained the first shot of the film that could’ve potentially brought back Crowe.

The Hitcher: "You’ll definitely want to pick up The Hitcher as the seminal eighties’ slasher gets the full Limited Edition overhaul from experts in the field Second Sight Films. They present a brand-new restored 4K version from the original camera negative supervised and approved by director Robert Harmon, that’s set for release on 30 September 2024.
Get ready for a horrifying ride with director Robert Harmon’s and screenwriter Eric Red's killer thriller, starring the late, inimitable Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner, Sin City) as the hitchhiker from hell, in a career-defining villainous role that was described by Empire as ‘The best Hannibal Lector that never was’ who terrorises innocent drivers as they drive along the deserted Midwest highways.

Subtlety is on short display in the new Telugu-language sci-fi fantasy epic that borrows from so many similarly-themed predecessors that the film could be shown at copyright lawyer conferences. Boasting eye-popping CGI visuals, spectacular action set pieces and the sort of hugely entertaining, over-the-top performance by Indian superstar Prabhas that shows why movie stars were invented, Kalki 2898 Ad is heavier on style than substance and far longer than necessary. But it certainly provides audiences bang for their buck, and its box-office success proves that the creators weren’t being overly optimistic by proclaiming “The Kalki Cinematic Universe Continues” during the end credits.
Providing a plot synopsis is bit of a challenge, so bear with me. Director-screenwriter Nag Ashwin’s three-hour film — fortunately, there’s an intermission — begins with a prologue, set in 3102 BC following the Kurukshetra War, that will be best appreciated by those familiar with the Hindu epic The Mahabharata.

Corpse Crusaders: "In the popular imagination, zombies are scary, decomposing corpses hunting down the living. But since the 1930s, there have also been other zombies shambling across the panels of comic books—zombies that aren’t quite what most people think zombies should be. There have been zombie slaves, zombie henchmen, talking zombies, beautiful zombies, and even zombie heroes.
Using archival research into Golden Age comics and extended analyses of comics from the 1940s to today, Corpse Crusaders explores the profound influence early action/adventure and superheroic generic conventions had on shaping comic book zombies. It takes the reader from the 1940s superhero, the Purple Zombie, through 1950s revenge-from-the-grave zombies, to the 1970s anti-hero, Simon Garth (“The Zombie”) and the gruesome heroes-turned-zombies of Marvel Zombies. In becoming immersed in superheroic logics early on, the zombie in comics became a figure that, unlike the traditional narrative uses of other monsters, actually...

A new listing has revealed the existence of Napoleon: The Director’s Cut, from Apple and Ridley Scott. More here.
The latest update from the classification and rating administration of the Motion Picture Association of America has brought with it apparent confirmation that there’s more Napoleon on the way.
Ridley Scott’s latest film until his next one – which happens to be this winter’s Gladiator 2 – starred Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby. It was a pretty decent movie too, which cost Apple a reported $200m to make. Certainly the staging of the battle sequences was prime Ridley, even if some other stuff wasn’t.
Not for the first time in Scott’s career – Blade Runner, Kingdom Of Heaven, The Counsellor, Robin Hood, the list goes on – there’s an extended version of one of his films getting an airing. This, interestingly, is seemingly being billed as the Napoleon: Director’s Cut.

The 1980s was a decade that left an indelible mark on the film industry, and its visual and sonic aesthetic continues to influence modern cinema to this day. Neon-lit cityscapes, synth-heavy soundtracks, and a dystopian cyberpunk feel defined the era’s sci-fi and action movies, from Blade Runner to The Terminator, and Total Recall to RoboCop. These iconic films, often shot on VHS-tape warm colors, have become synonymous with 80s nostalgia. Their influence can still be seen in contemporary movies that pay homage to these classics, serving up slices of nostalgia for audiences who grew up on these films. Ti West‘s...

With the rise of a new generation of talent in cinema, Paul Mescal is already a promising name capable of redefining the standards of excellence in acting, after all, he’s already been nominated for an Oscar. But is it possible for him to win now? A proof of this came with the release of the trailer for Gladiator 2.
Still from Gladiator II (Paramount Pictures)
Besides, it turns out that the sequel is already generating so much excitement and expectation that even those who criticize Ridley Scott’s productions may end up changing their minds about the director. Could it be time for him to grow on people as well?

The gods have spoken.

Here’s the plot summary, courtesy of Paramount:
From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome. Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus (Russell Crowe) at the hands of his uncle (Joaquin Phoenix), Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. After returning to his Alien and Blade Runner franchise in various capacities, Ridley Scott is continuing the story of his Best Picture winner Gladiator nearly a quarter-century later. Following up last year’s period epic (Napoleon) with another, Gladiator II brings together the epic cast of Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, and Connie Nielsen. Ahead of a November 22 release, the first trailer has now arrived.
Set a few decades after the original film, Mescal plays Lucius, grandson of Rome’s former emperor Marcus Aurelius, who is forced into slavery by Roman soldiers led by Marcus Acacius (Pascal) and fights as a gladiator.
“There’s a lot of Sophie’s Choice going on here, where these are impossible situations that we are being forced to reckon with,” Nielsen tells Vanity Fair. “There is an authoritarian power that is parading as if it were...

Kalki 2898 Ad, directed by Nag Ashwin, has received many great reviews. The movie was released in theatres on June 27, 2024. It’s a blend of science fiction and Hindu mythology set in a dystopian future. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan.
Ever since the Kalki 2898 Ad trailer dropped, many on the internet found similarities in the set design with Star Wars and Dune. The story is set in Kashi, post-apocalypse, where the city has turned into ruins. Hence, it also reminded some people of the Mad Max saga. Now, Nag Ashwin has reacted to these comparisons.

The word “franchise” is now familiar to fans of Harrison Ford, with multiple visits to the same characters in the “Star Wars,” Indiana Jones, “Blade Runner” and Jack Ryan (this must be some sort of record in franchise-starring).
In between, Ford got to exercise his acting muscles in such non-franchise films as “42,” “The Fugitive,” “The Mosquito Coast,” “Working Girl,” “Air Force One,” and of course “Witness,” the only movie to bring him an Oscar nomination. He has received other honors, including the American Film Institute life achievement award and the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes.
We’ve collected 15 of Ford’s best films and ranked them from worst to first, including the ones mentioned above. Tour our photo gallery and see if you agree or disagree with our choices.

The new Barbenheimer is approaching fast: in November 2024, Jon M. Chu releases musical fantasy Wicked soon after Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, the long-anticipated sequel to his iconic 2000 historical drama. For Scott, making the second installment was a big deal — first, because he’d always had it in mind, and second, because back in the day, he was robbed of his franchises by Hollywood… Twice.
Ridley Scott Lost Two Iconic Franchises
Without a doubt, Ridley Scott is up there among the greatest movie directors of our time. The man has delivered multiple instant classics and established some of the greatest franchises… However, he was twice ripped off of them by Hollywood, and despite many years having passed since then, the director is still bitter about it.
“I’m the author of two franchises. Most directors in Hollywood—certainly, let’s say, at my level—don’t let that stuff go.

Renowned filmmaker Ridley Scott, currently directing Gladiator II, recently revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair that he was never approached to direct any of the first three Alien sequels. Scott, known for kickstarting both the Alien and Blade Runner franchises, expressed his disappointment over this omission. Scott remarked, I’m the author of two franchises. Most directors in Hollywood—certainly, let’s say, at my level—don’t let that stuff go. But I did Alien as my second movie, so I didn’t have much choice. And Blade Runner was my third movie. So, I had no choice because I had very tough partners.

The Blade Runner 2099 series at Amazon Prime Video is underway. Most details about the TV series, which will star Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, are being kept under wraps. Ridley Scott, director of the original 1982 film Blade Runner, first revealed the television series was in the works in November 2021. Amazon joined the fold and announced it was in development in February 2022, and the series was formally greenlit in September 2022. This series will be the seventh installment of the Blade Runner franchise, following the original movie; the 2017 sequel starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford Blade Runner 2049; the 2017 trilogy of short films Blade Runner Black Out 2022, 2036: Nexus Dawn, and 2048: Nowhere to Run; and the 2021 anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus. Much like Harrison Ford, Eddie Murphy has been spending the back nine of his life reflecting on what made him great because maybe this is just what old dudes do when they feel like they’ve earned their victory laps. Ford has revisited “Star Wars,” “Blade Runner” and “Indiana Jones” in his late ‘70s/early ’80s, and Murphy, at 63, has reexamined “Coming To America” and now, a fourth “Beverley Hills Cop.

Alien and Blade Runner both spawned sequels, but filmamker Sir Ridley Scott wasn't behind the camera for them. James Cameron helmed the now-classic Aliens, with David Fincher later taking charge of the poorly-received, yet still fondly remembered, Alien 3.
As for Blade Runner, Dune director Denis Villeneuve took charge of Blade Runner 2049, a movie that proved to be a worthy follow-up to Scott's groundbreaking 1982 original.
Talking to Vanity Fair (via SFFGazette.com) about Gladiator II, Scott confirmed he was never asked to direct sequels to either movie or told about their development while it was happening. He blames that on being a relatively new filmmaker and having little interest in making follow-ups at the time.
"I was slow out the starting gate," Scott admits. "I mean, I should have done the sequels to 'Alien' and to 'Blade Runner.' You change over the years. At that time,...

As Ridley Scott continues to work on the highly anticipated Gladiator II, he revealed his disappointment over not being asked to direct any of the first three ‘Alien’ sequels. Scott’s connection with the franchise is profound, having directed the original Alien (1979), a film that became a cornerstone of science fiction horror. Scott’s Dual Franchise Dilemma Scott shared with I shouldn’t have had to make that decision, underscoring his frustration over choosing between two of his beloved franchises, Alien and Blade Runner. The director was candid in a recent interview about the tough choices he had faced due to studio...

When Ridley Scott’s Alien hit theaters in 1979, it marked only his second theatrical release, and he had no inkling it would evolve into an enduring franchise. Now, as Alien celebrates its 45th anniversary, Scott reflects on the sequels he believes should have been helmed by him. You can imagine I wasn’t happy, Scott admitted candidly. He elaborated, I should have done the sequels to ‘Alien’ and to ‘Blade Runner.’ You change over the years. At that time, I didn’t want to go through it again. So Jim Cameron came in—and then David Fincher—on ‘Alien 3.’ Evaluating Other Directors' Contributions...

We’ve previously heard that Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) are set to star in the Prime Video limited series Blade Runner 2099 – which is, of course, a continuation of the franchise that began with the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner and then got a long-awaited follow-up called Blade Runner 2049, which had Denis Villeneuve at the helm, in 2017. Now Deadline reports that the number of announced cast members has multiplied, as Yeoh and Schafer have been joined by Dimitri Abold (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy), Katelyn Rose Downey (The Nun II), Daniel Rigby (Renegade Nell), Johnny Harris (A Gentleman in Moscow”), Amy Lennox (Only Child), Sheila Atim (The Woman King), and Matthew Needham (House of the Dragon).
Abold, Gribben, Downey, and Rigby have series regular status, while Harris, Lennox, Atim, and Needham are recurring guest stars.

Universal has brought the release date of its upcoming musical adaptation Wicked forward by five days. The Jon M Chu-directed musical was supposed to open on 27th November, but the studio has now moved Wicked to open on 22nd November. Chu took to X (formerly Twitter) to deliver the news.
Wicked, which stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, will now open alongside Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2. Could this be this year’s Barbenheimer?

Chu’s musical likely moved its release date to avoid competition with Disney’s Moana 2. With Pixar’s Inside Out 2 performing well above expectations, crossing that magical $1bn line at the global box office, it’s a smart move from Universal.

Sir Ridley Scott claims he was "never told or asked" about making sequels to 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner'.The iconic 86-year-old filmmaker insisted he didn't have the "choice" or control to make studios wait for follow-ups to his 1979 and 1982 sci-fi classics, and he "wasn't happy" when the companies decided to make follow-ups without getting him on board. He told Vanity Fair magazine: "I’m the author of two franchises. Most directors in Hollywood — certainly, let’s say, at my level — don’t let that stuff go."But I did ‘Alien’ as my second movie, so I didn’t have much choice. And ‘Blade Runner’ was my third movie. So, I had no choice because I had very tough partners."It was kind of ‘Welcome to Hollywood.’ I was never told or asked [about sequels]. You can imagine I wasn’t happy.”'Blade Runner 2049' was released in 2017, while...

Ridley Scott is finishing up work on Gladiator II – and he’s still not happy about not getting the chance to make Alien and Blade Runner’s first sequels.
It’s not an unfamiliar drum for director Ridley Scott to beat, but he’s been chatting about being cut out of the first raft of sequels to his 1979 classic Alien. Scott made the original, of course, but it was James Cameron who eventually got the nod to direct 1986’s Aliens. For Ridley Scott, he never got the opportunity at the time.
Chatting to Vanity Fair he admits that “I was slow out the starting gate” when it came to directing sequels. Currently putting the finishing touches to this winter’s Gladiator II, Scott argues “I should have done the sequels to Alien and to Blade Runner”. Yet it notes that “at the time, I didn’t want to go through it again.

Acclaimed filmmaker Ridley Scott has recently opened up about his regrets concerning the sequels to two of his most iconic films, “Alien” and “Blade Runner.” In a candid interview with Vanity Fair, the director revealed he wishes he had been at the helm for the follow-ups to these groundbreaking science fiction classics.
Scott, who directed the original “Alien” in 1979 and “Blade Runner” in 1982, explained that as a relatively new director in Hollywood at the time, he had little say in the matter of sequels. “I’m the author of two franchises. Most directors in Hollywood—certainly, let’s say, at my level—don’t let that stuff go,” Scott stated. “But I did ‘Alien’ as my second movie, so I didn’t have much choice. Ridley Scott is looking back at his filmmaking career and wishes he had been able to direct the sequels to Alien and Blade Runner.
In a new interview, Scott explained why he was not directly involved with follow-up films to the franchises he established.
“I’m the author of two franchises. Most directors in Hollywood—certainly, let’s say, at my level—don’t let that stuff go,” Scott told Vanity Fair.
He continued, “But I did Alien as my second movie, so I didn’t have much choice. And Blade Runner was my third movie. So, I had no choice because I had very tough partners. It was kind of ‘Welcome to Hollywood.'”
The original Alien film was released in 1979, and the sequel Aliens was released in 1986, with James Cameron taking over as director. Scott directed 1982’s Blade Runner, and Denis Villeneuve got director duties for 2017’s Blade Runner 2049.

Ridley Scott said in an interview with Vanity Fair that he was never asked to direct the sequels to “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” nor was he even told about their development at the time. Scott reasons that his status as an emerging filmmaker is why he got the boot, not that he was personally interested in directing sequels so early in his career.

Ridley Scott is one of the most prolific filmmakers during the 70s and even today, he still produces epic-scale movies that fans of different generations enjoy. An auteur like him would absolutely want to protect his own franchises and see to it that his own vision from the beginning flows continuously to their successors.

Ridley Scott was once attached to direct Blade Runner 2049, but when the time finally came to shoot the sequel, Scott dropped out to focus on Alien: Covenant and Denis Villeneuve was picked to replace him. Looking back, Scott told Vanity Fair that it’s a choice he still regrets.
“I was regretful,” Scott said. “Although [Denis Villeneuve] did a good job.” Although Blade Runner 2049 was praised by critics, it did bomb at the box office, dooming any potential sequel. However, the franchise will soon be revived with Blade Runner 2099, a TV series for Prime Video which Scott is executive producing.
